Marvel Studios Phase 5: Kevin Feige Lifts Curtain at Comic-Con

Three years after unveiling Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe at San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige returned to Hall H to do the same for Phase 5, which included announcements for the new “Daredevil” Disney+ series and the “Thunderbolts” feature film. Feige also gave a brief glimpse into what is coming in Phase 6, which is scheduled to conclude in Nov. 2025 with “Avengers: Secret Wars” — which Feige says caps off the Multiverse Saga of the MCU.

Here’s everything we learned about the rest of Phase 4, Phase 5, and what’s to come in Phase 6.

PHASE 4

Adam B. Vary / Variety

“She-Hulk: Attorney at Law”
Premiere date: Aug. 17

What we learned: A legal comedy with a touch of “Fleabag,” this Disney+ series starring Tatiana Maslany as Jennifer Walters (i.e. Bruce Banner’s cousin) boasts a cavalcade of superheroes who need a good lawyer — who is also giant and green. The panel also included a trailer, which (unlike a lot of the footage unveiled in Hall H) was also released publicly.

“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”
Release date: Nov. 11

What we learned: Namor (Tenoch Huerta) is coming to the MCU, as the kingdom of Wakanda reels after the death of T’Challa (the late Chadwick Boseman). Joining the cast are Dominique Thorne (as Riri Williams), Michaela Coel (Aneka), Mabel Cadena (Namora) and Alex Livanalli (Attuma). This film will conclude Phase 4, though it’s unclear exactly how. Watch the trailer here.

PHASE 5

Michael Buckner / Variety

“Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania”
Release date: Feb. 17, 2023

What we learned: Phase 5 launches with the introduction of Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors), who meets Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) in the Quantum Realm after Scott is mysteriously sucked there along with his daughter Cassie Lang (Kathryn Newton), Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly), Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), and Janet van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer). In footage screened just in Hall H, Bill Murray has a cameo as an old acquaintance of Janet’s from within the Quantum Realm, but given Kang’s titular role in one of two “Avengers” titles announced on Saturday (more below), all eyes are on how Majors will reshape the narrative of the MCU. Plus, Director Peyton Reed confirmed to the crowd yet another great Marvel villain would be making a cameo in this film, “you might have seen a shot of MODOK,” Reed said.

“Secret Invasion”
Premiere date: Spring 2023

What we learned: Co-star Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill) was on hand to preview this dark and gritty political thriller, which stars Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, alongside Ben Mendelsohn (the Skrull Talos), Don Cheadle (James Rhodes), and Martin Freeman (Everett K. Ross). Joining them are Kingsley Ben-Adir (seen multiplying into several identical forms in a confrontation with Fury), Olivia Colman (seen telling Fury he’s past his prime) and Emilia Clarke (seen brandishing a gun). The overall vibe is one of paranoia and foreboding, contributing to a larger anti-heroic thread that seems to run through Phase 5.

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”
Release date: May 5, 2023

What we learned: An emotional James Gunn and his equally emotional cast — including Chris Pratt, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Sean Gunn, Will Poulter and Maria Bakalova as Cosmo the Spacedog — debuted the first look at the final Guardians film, which hinted at revealing how Rocket became a sentient, walking raccoon. Chukwudi Iwuji (formerly of DC’s “Peacemaker”) plays the High Evolutionary, and introduced himself to Hall H in character (implying that he played a role in Rocket’s transformation).

Marvel Studios

“Echo”
Premiere date: Summer 2023

What we learned: Nothing more than the release period for the series that spins off “Hawkeye” antagonist Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) into her own spin-off. Sydney Freeland (“Reservation Dogs,” “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds”) and Catriona McKenzie (“The Walking Dead,” “Shining Vale”) are directing.

Marvel Studios

“Loki” Season 2
Premiere date: Summer 2023

What we learned: The Disney+ series that introduced the multiverse to the MCU is currently filming and will debut next summer. There was nary a mention of this critically adored series, but pictures from set have been fluttering across the internet as of late.

Marvel Studios

“Blade”
Release date: Nov. 3, 2023

What we learned: Feige made no casting announcements, but he confirmed that the reboot of the Marvel comics vampire franchise with Mahershala Ali — first announced in 2019 in Hall H — will be Marvel’s final feature for 2023, and starts shooting in October. Bassam Tariq (“Mogul Mowgli”) is directing.

Marvel Studios

“Ironheart”
Premiere date: Fall 2023

What we learned: After her introduction in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) will star in her own Disney+ series. Chinaka Hodge (“Amazing Stories,” “Snowpiercer”) is head writer, and Sam Bailey (“Dear White People”) and Angela Barnes (“Blindspotting”) are directing.

Marvel Studios

“Agatha: Coven of Chaos”
Premiere date: Winter 2023/2024

What we learned: Originally titled “Agatha: House of Harkness,” this “WandaVision” spinoff centered on Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness will be Marvel’s final Disney+ series in 2023. “WandaVision” head writer Jac Schaeffer will write and executive produce the show.

Marvel Studios

“Daredevil: Born Again”
Premiere date: Spring 2024

What we learned: Original launched as part of the Netflix slate of Marvel TV series (which were nominally part of the MCU), Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock is being (fully) brought into the Marvel Studios fold with a Disney+ series that is getting an unprecedented 18-episode order for its first season. Cox’s Murdock first reappeared in 2021’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” and his nemesis Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio) popped up as the big bad on 2021’s “Hawkeye.” Both characters are set to show up on “Echo,” and it appears that Daredevil will also appear on “She-Hulk,” before returning for the main event in this series.

On Netflix, the “Daredevil” series was far more violent and bloody than anything that’s been produced by Marvel Studios directly, further suggesting that the MCU’s Phase 5 will wade deeper into the moral murk than it ever has before.

Marvel Studios

“Captain America: New World Order”
Release date: May 3, 2024

What we learned: We’ve known since the conclusion of the Disney+ series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” that Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) would return in his own feature film as Captain America. In Hall H, Feige announced the eyebrow-raising title — more anxiety and dread! — and a release date that gives the film the prime position for Marvel’s 2024 film slate.

Marvel Studios

“Thunderbolts”
Release date: July 25, 2024

What we learned: Phase 5 ends with Marvel’s answer to DC’s Suicide Squad: A team up film about a bunch of MCU anti-heroes. Feige said he would talking about casting another day, but there are plenty of candidates already, including Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), Baron Zemo (Daniel Brühl), Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), Abomination (Tim Roth), John Walker (Wyatt Russell), and Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko).

PHASE 6

Michael Buckner / Variety

“Fantastic 4”
Release date: Nov. 8, 2024

What we learned: While “Spider-Man: No Way Home” filmmaker Jon Watts recently stepped away from directing “Fantastic 4,” Marvel Studios is full steam ahead with bringing the original Stan Lee/Jack Kirby Marvel comic book series into the MCU. The Fantastic Four and lead villain Victor Von Doom play critical roles in the comic book inspiration for the final movie in the Multiverse Saga, so launching Phase 4 with them makes sense.

What is surprising is that the entire Phase 6 run lasts less than a year.

Marvel Studios

“Avengers: The Kang Dynasty”
Release date: May 2, 2025

What we learned: Similar to how “Avengers: Infinity War” set up “Avengers: Endgame,” Feige made clear that Phase 6 of the MCU — and the Multiverse Saga — will conclude with two “Avengers” movies. Given the title, it’s safe to presume that Majors’ Kang the Conqueror is the Thanos (or maybe a Thanos) of the Multiverse Saga.

Marvel Studios

“Avengers: Secret Wars”
Release date: Nov. 7, 2025

What we learned: After many fans — and some entertainment publications — wondered aloud this year about where, exactly, the MCU was heading, Feige took the time in Hall H to finally say: Here.

“Secret Wars” points to a Marvel comics crossover miniseries from 2015 that involves an incursion between the main Marvel universe (Earth-616) and the Ultimate Marvel universe (Earth-1610) leading to the destruction of both. In its wake, many variants of Marvel characters find themselves living in a post-apocalyptic planet called Battleworld.

It is unclear, and will be for some time, how much Marvel Studios will draw from the 2015 “Secret Wars” — or the mid-1980s “Secret Wars” miniseries that inspired it. But perhaps the most important detail is what happened after the “Secret Wars”: Marvel Studios effectively rebooted, launching “all-new, all-different” versions of many of its most beloved titles, as some (but not all) characters from the 616 an 1610 universes found themselves living within a somewhat rebooted timeline.

Could the same be in store for the MCU? Only time(lines) will tell.

Kevin Feige Confirms Daredevil Casting In The MCU And Fans Will Be Pumped

Over the years, certain actors have grown to become synonymous with the Marvel character they were hired to play. Robert Downey Jr. IS Tony Stark. Chris Evans has claimed the fabric of Steve Rogers. Some roles can get recast, like Edward Norton handing Hulk to Mark Ruffalo, or Don Cheadle replacing Terrence Howard. But many lay claim to their character, and that’s final. This is how many MCU fans feel about Charlie Cox and his portrayal of the blind attorney Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil. There have been calls to bring Cox over to the MCU and allow him to keep playing the Man Without Fear… and it seems like Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has been listening.

The man behind the machine that is the MCU sat down with CinemaBlend recently, and fielded out questions about Daredevil, and the character’s potential in the MCU now that his Netflix show has run its course. It’d be a shame NOT to feature Daredevil in either a Marvel feature or a Disney+ show, and we asked Feige what he thought about Charlie Cox being able to stay in the part. To our surprise, the usually covert Kevin Feige confirmed the news that so many fans will want to hear when he told CinemaBlend:

If you were to see Daredevil in upcoming things, Charlie Cox, yes, would be the actor playing Daredevil. Where we see that, how we see that, when we see that, remains to be seen.

Kevin Feige still kept some cards close to his vest with regards to the future of Daredevil when it comes to a concrete timeline, but those who loved Charlie Cox’s portrayal of the character can rejoice in knowing that he will return to Hell’s Kitchen at some point and patrol the streets on behalf of the neighborhood’s citizens. And in light of a number of shows that have been developing, bringing Daredevil over makes more sense than it might have when the Netflix show ran its course.

For instance, Hawkeye on Disney+ just introduced the character of Echo, a deaf warrior with connections to Wilson Fisk, aka The Kingpin. And Daredevil has been a consistent thorn in Fisk’s side for decades in the comics. There have been rumors that Vincent D’Onofrio, also from the Netflix Daredevil show, is about to show up on Hawkeye, so pitting Cox against his former co-star is a natural progression.

If Marvel Studios only wanted to explore the legal aspects of Matt Murdock, who is as powerful in a courtroom as he is in a darkened alley, then Daredevil could be a natural fit on She-Hulk, another Disney+ show that’s in production now that will introduce audiences to Jennifer Walters (Tatiyana Maslany), yet another superpowered citizen who practices law. Why was this such a common things at Marvel Comics over the years?

Charlie Cox’s take on Matt Murdock and Daredevil was incredibly popular with Marvel fans, and an improvement over Ben Affleck’s efforts in a doomed Daredevil movie that cast MCU rock star Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan. We will see how many Netflix players follow Charlie Cox to the MCU if and when he arrives, but according to Kevin Feige, it’s happening, and we know that fans will be overjoyed.

Kevin Feige on Eternals, Venom/Spider-Man Post-Credits Scene – The Hollywood Reporter

Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige counts himself fortunate to have spent years working with Stan Lee, the comic book writer who became world-famous thanks to cameos in films based on Marvel creations.

But Feige regrets never meeting Jack Kirby, the legendary artist whose work included Captain America, X-Men, The Hulk, Fantastic Four and many more. Eternals is Kirby’s latest creation to come to the big screen, with filmmaker Chloé Zhao adapting the cosmic tale the writer-artist introduced in the 1970s.

“The whole movie is a love letter to what one man was able to do with a pencil, sitting at a little desk on the east coast,” Feige told The Hollywood Reporter at the Eternals premiere in Hollywood Monday.

The legacy of Kirby, who died in 1994, was top of mind at Monday’s Eternals premiere, where Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld walked the red carpet with the copy of Eternals No. 1 he bought at his local store as a kid.

Eternals is the eon-spanning tale of a group of aliens sent to Earth to protect humanity from violent beings known as Deviants. The film has a sprawling cast that includes Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lia McHugh, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Ridloff, Barry Keoghan, Don Lee, Harish Patel, Kit Harington, Salma Hayek and Angelina Jolie.

Feige broke into the world of Marvel with 2000’s X-Men, which the first major film adapting Kirby’s work.

“The other day I was like, ‘How cool that I live in the timeline where William Shatner went to space in real life? One of the bummers, you could argue there are many, of the current timeline that we live in, is that Jack Kirby passed before he got to see any of this,” said Feige.

The Eternals arrives in the midst of Marvel Studios’ busiest year ever, which has seen it launch three films (what a fourth on the way) and dive into streaming for the first time on Disney+. It also comes amid a big moment for Andy Serkis, a member of the Marvel family who appeared as the villain Ulysses Klaue in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) and Black Panther (2018).

Serkis stepped behind the camera for Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which not only was a pandemic era hit, but also featured a post-credits scene that shocked fans.

[Warning: the below contains spoilers for Venom: Let There Be Carnage.]

In the final moments of Let There Be Carnage, Eddie Brock/Venom (Tom Hardy) found themselves transported to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where J. Jonah Jameson (J.K. Simmons) was on television railing against Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland). It was a major move, as the Venom universe, which is controlled by Sony, has been separate from the Disney-owned MCU. It sets the stage for a potential meeting between comic book rivals Venom and Spider-Man in a future film, though it’s unclear when that may happen. Peter Parker next appears in Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, which opens Dec. 17.

Asked how that scene came together, Feige noted it took a lot of coordination between Sony and Marvel.

“There was a lot of coordination — and if you don’t know all the coordination yet, I’m not going to be the one to tell you — but yes, between Sony and Marvel and the Venom team and the No Way Home team,” said Feige. “We worked together on it.”

Serkis will move to yet another comic book universe in March, when he will be seen as Alfred in The Batman for Warner Bros. and DC. A new trailer dropped Saturday, and Feige was among those who checked it out.

“I thought it was great, and I thought he [Serkis] was great and everybody was great. And Jeffrey Wright, our Watcher, is great,” said Feige, referencing Wright’s roles of Commissioner Gordon in DC’s The Batman and the narrator in the Marvel series What If…? “I am beginning to think it’s Jeffrey Wright’s world and we live in it.”

As for Eternals, Feige acknowledges it’s a big swing bringing a lesser-known property to the screen with a big-budget movie.

Said Feige: “We are very, very proud of it. Yes, it’s ten characters nobody has heard of. But it is the heart and soul of what Jack Kirby brought to our universe.”

Eternals arrives in theaters on Nov. 5.

Kevin Feige on Shang-Chi controversy, Scarlett Johansson lawsuit

Kevin Feige
Photo: Rich Fury (Getty Images)

Marvel has had an uncharacteristically tricky summer. After leaving the world with Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home, it was safe to assume that their place at the top of the blockbuster entertainment heap was secure. But roughly a month after the release of their first big-screen release since Spider-Man nearly two years ago, the multi-verse is spiraling out of control. First, Scarlett Johansson sued the powerhouse for simultaneously releasing her first solo outing Black Widow in theaters and on Disney+. Then, weeks later, Disney CEO Bob Chapek referred to the upcoming Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings as an “interesting experiment.” Although Chapek was talking about giving Shang-Chi a 45-day exclusive theatrical release, many, including the film’s star Simu Liu, interpreted his comments as a derogatory remark about the film’s predominantly Asian cast.

Since the news of the lawsuit and Chapek’s comments broke, we’ve heard very little from Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige, the ringleader of the MCU. However, at the premiere of Shang-Chi, Feige attempted to put out the fires.

“He is not a shy man,” Feige said about Liu’s tweet. “I think in that particular tweet you can see, and I think everyone does, a misunderstanding. It was not the intention. The proof is in the movie and we swing for the fences as we always do. With the amount of creative energy we put in and the budget, there’s no expense spared to bring this origin story to the screen.”

Over the weekend, Liu tweeted in response to Chapek, “We are not an experiment. We are the underdog; the underestimated. We are the ceiling-breakers. We are the celebration of culture and joy that will persevere after an embattled year. We are the surprise. I’m fired the f**k up to make history on September 3rd; JOIN US.”

At this point, Feige is doing damage control, understandably trying to keep attention off of this controversy and on the film he’s releasing. Anyway, Feige’s two-stepping around controversy continued as he said he’s “all for amicable solutions” when it came to the ScarJo suit. Giving a milquetoast soundbite is Feige’s superpower.

Kevin Feige Talks ‘Shang-Chi’ Representation and “Experiment” Comment Controversy – The Hollywood Reporter

On Monday night, the stars of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings gathered in Hollywood to celebrate the upcoming Marvel Studios tentpole. But in an unusual set of circumstances for the Disney-owned studio, the premiere came just 48 hours after its lead, Simu Liu, took aim at Disney CEO Bob Chapek, who had described Shang-Chi‘s release strategy as an “experiment” for the company.

Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige addressed the tweet during the premiere, saying of Liu: “He is not a shy man. I think in that particular tweet you can see and I think everyone does, a misunderstanding. It was not the intention. The proof is in the movie and we swing for the fences as we always do. With the amount of creative energy we put in and the budget, there’s no expense spared to bring this origin story to the screen.”

On Aug. 12, Disney CEO Bob Chapek fielded a question during an investor’s call about keeping Shang-Chi and Free Guy as theatrical exclusives rather than putting the day-and-date on Disney Premier Access, as the company had done with Black Widow, Cruella and Jungle Cruise. Chapek called Shang-Chi “an interesting experiment for us” as the film only has a 45-day theatrical window. He added, “the prospect of being able to take a Marvel title to the service after going theatrical with 45 days will be yet another data point to inform our actions going forward on our titles.”

On Aug. 14, Liu responded to that comment via a statement on Twitter. “We are not an experiment,” Liu began. “We are the underdog; the underestimated. We are the ceiling-breakers. We are the celebration of culture and joy that will persevere after an embattled year. We are the surprise. I’m fired the f**k up to make history on September 3rd; JOIN US.”

Feige also noted that Shang-Chi‘s premiere had a similarly impactful feel to that of Black Panther‘s celebrations. “When you have the opportunity to showcase a hero that looks like a huge segment of the globe that feels like they haven’t been showcased, the magic can happen if you deliver. I think Destin (Daniel Cretton) and Simu have delivered for this movie.”

Feige added that he noticed a superhero quality in Liu after “a lot of reads, a lot of auditions” adding “there’s no magic formula” in finding the right person for a Marvel hero. “It’s a feeling. It’s a sense of both the ability to be relatable and grounded and, at the same time, take your place in that pantheon of heroes should everything go so well in an origin story they will end up with the other pandemic heroes.”

As for what could potentially be next for Liu’s Shang-Chi, Feige noted “there is a direct line of where he heads to next.”

Shang-Chi is a barrier-breaking film for Marvel, as it is the studio’s first to star a largely Asian cast. It also stars Tony Leung, Awkwafina, Michelle Yeoh, Fala Chen, Meng’er Zhang, Florian Munteanu and Ronny Chieng.

Liu’s comments came as another Disney star was at odds with the company, which is in the midst of a bombshell lawsuit with Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson, who is suing over Disney’s decision to release the Marvel title simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access. The actor claimed the move hurt the box office in favor of juicing Disney’s streaming service.

Marvels’ Feige addressed the lawsuit at the premiere, noting he is “all for amicable solutions.”

Black Panther 2 has officially started production in Atlanta

The story of Wakanda continues at Marvel. President of Marvel Studios, Kevin Fiege, says the filming of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has begun at Pinewood Studios in Atlanta.

Though Ryan Coogler and the majority of the first film’s cast will reprise their roles, a crucial member of the cast will be missing in the second film: the Black Panther himself—the late Chadwick Boseman.

“It’s clearly very emotional without Chad,” Feige told Variety before the Black Widow Global Fan Event on Tuesday night. “But everyone is also very excited to bring the world of Wakanda back to the public and back to the fans. We’re going to do it in a way that would make Chad proud.”

Marvel already confirmed they will not digitally reproduce Boseman for the sequel, or seek to replace Boseman as Black Panther. Fiege did not offer any plot details for Wakanda Forever, but it’s reported the film will focus more on the afrofuturistic world of Wakanda. Cast members likely to return from the original film include: Danai Gurira, Letitia Wright, Daniel Kaluuya, Winston Duke, Lupita Nyong’o, Florence Kasumba, and Angela Bassett.

Following Black Panther’s release in 2018, it instantly became an international hit, breaking numerous box office records and rising to become the highest grossing superhero movie in U.S. history. Shattering the ill-formed thought that Black-fronted films were not commercially viable, it became a pop culture phenomenon. Black Panther remains a standout in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In addition to Wakanda Forever, Coogler recently signed a deal with Disney+ setting in motion a potential Wakanda-focused series for the streamer. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is set to premiere in theaters on July 8, 2022.
