Benfica confirm Enzo Fernández agreement with Chelsea for Premier League-record fee

The transfer deadline has passed without an official announcement from either Chelsea or Benfica about the transfer of Enzo Fernández being completed, but we can (probably) rest assured that there will no more shenanigans or u-turns or whatever, and that the 22-year-old will soon be posing in Chelsea Blue. But it takes time to get those poses, with just the right amount of Blue Steel.

Social media is obviously a huge thing (and seems that Chelsea official accounts are embracing it in increasingly meme-ified ways, much to yours truly’s old man annoyance), and we’re certainly going to milk Enzo’s announcement, arrival, etc. for all that we can.

Gotta pay for that fee somehow!

Speaking of the fee, Benfica did confirm last night (well, 30 minutes past midnight local time) that Chelsea are paying €121m all told — reports have this in six installments total, with the first one bigger than the rest at €40m — which includes the various provisions that have to made with regards to solidarity payments as well as the 25 per cent that’s due to River Plate as per their sell-on agreement from the summer.

The €121m (£106.75m) is a new Premier League record for an incoming transfer, beating Jack Grealish’s £100m transfer from Aston Villa to Manchester City a couple seasons ago. The most expensive transfer involving a Premier League team remains Philippe Coutinho’s still hilarious €135+45m (£105+35m at the time) transfer to Barcelona from Liverpool in January 2018 — the maximum potential fee for Eden Hazard to Real Madrid was €160m, tough he probably didn’t hit all the bonuses.

Anyway, now we just wait for the announcement video, which hopefully will be more Hibsy and less Spursy.

Venice reveals details of its €10 tourist entry fee

Editor’s Note — Sign up to CNN Travel’s Unlocking Italy newsletter for insider intel on Italy’s best loved destinations and lesser-known regions to plan your ultimate trip. Plus, we’ll get you in the mood before you go with movie suggestions, reading lists and recipes from Stanley Tucci.

(CNN) — The countdown has begun. From January 16, 2023, visitors to Venice — that jewel in Italy’s tourism crown — will have to pay for the privilege.

It’s set to become the first city in the world to require an entrance fee. The launch date was announced by Venice’s councilor for tourism, Simone Venturini, at a press conference on Friday.

Venturini called the new measure a “great revolution,” and a solution for the overtourism problem that the lagoon city has been struggling with for decades.

The cost of the ticket will range from a three-euro minimum right up to 10 euros. The price will not be fixed, but will vary according to the number of visitors: The more requests for entry, the higher the cost.

The goal, explained Venturini, is not to “close the city,” but to get people to book their presence to reduce the “tourist peaks.” He said, “Venice is a living city and it has to stay that way.”

Exceptions

The complex ticket booking system and its online platform will be unveiled this fall. There are many exceptions to the entrance ticket mandate, explained Michele Zuin, councilor for the budget.

Residents and children aged under six will be exempt, as will disabled people, homeowners, those who come to the city for health reasons or to visit relatives, and those coming to attend a sporting or cultural event.

Overnight hotel guests will also avoid paying the entrance fee because they’ll already be paying a tourist tax through their hotel.

“It is not a system to make cash but to manage tourist flows,” Zuin emphasized. The proceeds from the entrance fee will go to lowering the taxes of Venetians, which are already very high due to the large volume of tourists that need to be accommodated.

The entrance fee will apply to the Venice historic center and the following islands:

Lido di Venezia, Pellestrina, Murano, Burano, Torcello, Sant’Erasmo, Mazzorbo, Mazzorbetto, Vignole, S. Andrea, La Certosa, S. Servolo, S. Clemente and Poveglia.

The fines for ticket violations will range from 50 euros up to 300 euros.

Post-pandemic mentality

“Covid made us realize that what was an everyday occurrence before Covid isn’t acceptable anymore — the mentality has changed, as has the sensitivity [towards crowds],” he said.

He explained that the booking system would “give us the chance to know how many people are predicted for that day, and to calibrate services according to the number.”

Venturini also said in April that the portal would flag people that they might want to change their mind.

“We can say, ‘Dear visitor, we don’t advise coming on this date because it’s Ferragosto [August public holiday] or Easter — there’ll be a lot of people so it will hinder you from having a peaceful visit, and if you make it a week later you can enjoy your visit more,” he said.

Venturini also predicted that Venice won’t be the last to introduce a charge.

“I think many other European cites who live with significant numbers of daytrippers are watching us to understand in what way they can introduce [a similar scheme],” he said.

Venice may be the first city to introduce a fee, but already one village in Italy has introduced a charge for daytrippers. Civita di Bagnoregio introduced a “symbolic” fee of €1.50 ($1.67) in 2013. Mayor Francesco Bigiotti planned it as a marketing stunt to attract tourists to his village on a crumbling cliff, known as the “dying town.”

The fee intrigued visitors to such an extent that visitors grew from 40,000 in 2009 to 1 million in 2018.

Breaking: DONE DEAL, Bayern Munich sign Liverpool’s Sadio Mane + transfer fee breakdown

Big news from Sky Sports. According to them, Bayern Munich are set to bid 50 million euros (around £42.5m) for Liverpool striker Sadio Mane. The Senegalese star has been identified by the Bavarians as a top target this summer, and it looks like the bosses have seen fit to shell out generously to secure his services.

This report comes courtesy of Football Daily, and you can watch their video below:

Today was always going to be a big day for the Mane transfer, as numerous reputable Liverpool journalists have reported details of a fresh bid being submitted this Friday. According to Paul Joyce of The Times, a delegation from Munich was set to meet in Liverpool for face-to-face talks today, ostensibly regarding the Mane transfer. Per Joyce, the fact that the English club were prepared to meet Salihamidzic for talks indicates that they are willing to proceed with the transfer.

Between these reports, we can assume that Bayern Munich did indeed raise their bid, though whether the €50m is accurate remains to be seen. This would make the deal exorbitant by Bayern standards — at 30 years old, Sadio Mane would become the club’s third most expensive signing after Lucas Hernandez and Leroy Sane. Given that his salary package is also expected to be huge, this shows the faith the Bayern bosses have in the Senegalese star.

So where do we go from here? If this is the bid that Liverpool wanted, then expect things to move really quickly. Hopefully, the saga won’t drag on much longer, and Julian Nagelsmann will get his preferred target early enough to join the team for preseason. With Robert Lewandowski agitating for a move to Barcelona this summer, a statement signing like Sadio Mane could put the entire Bayern Munich setup — execs, coach, players, and the fans — at ease.

Update

Even Romano says it’s only a matter of time.

Notably, he didn’t confirm the transfer fee yet.

Update #2

Plettenberg says it’s a done deal, and for less than €40m!

Update #3

Here is Paul Joyce’s report on the transfer fee breakdown. His sources are directly from LFC, so don’t expect the fee to get any higher than this.
