FedEx and UPS warn of possible delivery delays as winter storm sweeps country

FedEx and UPS are warning customers that harsh winter weather conditions around several service hubs may cause delivery delays.

“FedEx Express experienced substantial disruptions at our Memphis and Indianapolis hubs last night due to severe winter weather that has been moving across the United States,” the company said in an alert.

FedEx sent out the service alert on Friday and instructed customers to check regularly for updates as the winter storm rolls across the northern part of the U.S.

“Potential delays are possible for package deliveries across the U.S. with a delivery commitment of Friday, December 23 and Saturday, December 24,” the company said. “FedEx is committed to provide service to the best of our ability.”

FedEx, along with competitor UPS both stress the safety of their employees.

In a service alert, UPS said, “Significant weather events across several regions of the U.S. are impacting the UPS Air and Ground network, including UPS hubs in Louisville, Ky. and Rockford, Ill. As a result, some delivery and pickup services in these areas will be affected.”

“Safely delivering on our commitments is UPS’s most important priority,” UPS spokesperson Jim Mayer told FOX Business. “Our drivers are trained to safely make deliveries, and if we cannot safely deliver to an area, we will resume service as soon as conditions permit.”

Mayer added that UPS has a team of full-time meteorologists who monitor the weather and help create contingency plans as winter storms develop.

UPS also told customers to check for service alerts for the latest information on service delays.

Wall Street ends up with help from Nike, FedEx and consumer sentiment

  • Consumer confidence rebounds in December
  • Data shows November home sales decline
  • Nike jumps on strong second-quarter results
  • FedEx soars on cost-cutting plans
  • Indexes up: Dow 1.60%, S&P 1.49%, Nasdaq 1.54%

Dec 21 (Reuters) – Wall Street’s three main stock indexes closed higher on Wednesday for their biggest daily gains so far in December with help from upbeat Nike (NKE.N) and FedEx (FDX.N) quarterly earnings, as well as improving consumer confidence and easing inflation expectations from investors.

Nike Inc shares soared 12% after beating profit expectations for its second quarter on strong holiday demand from North American shoppers, while FedEx finished up 3.4% and shares in cruise operator Carnival Corp (CCL.N) jumped 4.7% after posting a smaller-than-expected quarterly loss.

FedEx Corp (FDX.N), which sparked a market selloff in September after pulling financial forecasts, provided financial guidance and announced plans for $1 billion cost cuts.

Also, U.S. consumer confidence rose to an eight-month high in December as inflation retreated and the labor market remained strong while 12-month inflation expectations fell to 6.7%, the lowest since September 2021.

“We’re seeing a broad rally. It’s been helped by upbeat corporate commentary and an improvement in consumer confidence,” said Angelo Kourkafas, investment strategist at Edward Jones in St. Louis referring to Nike and FedEx.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJI) rose 526.74 points, or 1.6%, to 33,376.48, the S&P 500 (.SPX) gained 56.82 points, or 1.49%, to 3,878.44 and the Nasdaq Composite (.IXIC) added 162.26 points, or 1.54%, to 10,709.37.

Energy firms (.SPNY) were the biggest gainers among the S&P’s 11 major industry sector, adding 1.89%, as oil futures rose.

The smallest gainer among the sectors was consumer staples (.SPLRCS), which finished up 0.8%.

Still, Wednesday’s data also showed that U.S. existing home sales slumped 7.7% to a 2-1/2-year low in November as the housing market was hurt by higher mortgage rates. But the data may be fuelling investor hope that the Fed could ease up on its tightening policy.

“At the macro level you have economic weakness but at the micro level you have companies that are resilient and delivering positive expectations from an earnings perspective,” said Brian Price, head of investment management for Commonwealth Financial Network in Waltham, Mass. “That combination is going to be positive.”

Fears of a recession following the U.S. central bank’s prolonged interest rate hikes have weighed heavily on equities and these fears have put the S&P on track for its biggest annual decline since 2008 and a decline for December.

“There’s still a lot of uncertainty and we’re likely to see a lot of volatility early in the year as we could be in a mild recessionary environment,” said Edward Jones’ Kourkafas but he believes the market has already priced in a weaker economy.

“We still have some headwinds ahead but maybe we don’t have to price in a recession twice. So far what we’ve seen this year has already priced in a mild recession.”

AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc (AMC.N) finished up 4.3% after the cinema-chain operator said it suspended talks to acquire certain assets of bankrupt Cineworld Group (CINE.L).

Advancing issues outnumbered declining ones on the NYSE by a 3.43-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 2.10-to-1 ratio favored advancers.

The S&P 500 posted 5 new 52-week highs and 3 new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 69 new highs and 268 new lows.

On U.S. exchanges 9.81 billion shares changed hands, compared with the 11.16 billion average for the last 20 sessions.

Stock futures rise, helped by Nike and FedEx earnings

Stock futures traded higher early on Wednesday, as sentiment got a boost from strong earnings out of Nike and FedEx.

Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 236 points, or 0.71%. S&P 500 futures rose 0.5% and Nasdaq 100 futures climbed 0.4%.

Nike shares added 12% after the apparel maker beat Wall Street’s expectations for quarterly earnings and revenue. Meanwhile, FedEx gained 4.7% as the package delivery giant beat consensus estimates on per-share earnings. The company fell short of expectations for revenue, however.

The Dow on Tuesday rose more than 92 points, or nearly 0.3%. The S&P 500 climbed 0.1% and the Nasdaq Composite eked out a slight gain of 0.01%. All three of the major indexes snapped a four-day losing streak, putting a little wind back into hopes for an end-of-year rally.

The modest gains came even after the Bank of Japan moved to widen its cap on the 10-year Japanese government bond yield, leading to a spike in the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield higher that initially rattled traders.

“Let’s focus on the positive. … From a fundamental perspective, the market took a pretty good punch and stood on its feet,” Virtus Investment Partners’ Joe Terranova said on CNBC’s “Closing Bell: Overtime” on Tuesday.

There’s a “tremendous amount of resiliency” in the market, he added, saying that should be investors’ focus going into 2023.

Investors await another batch of data due Wednesday morning, beginning with the Mortgage Bankers Association’s weekly measurement of nationwide home loan applications. Traders will also get updates on existing home sales and consumer confidence data.

There are a few more big names left to report earnings before the Christmas holiday. RiteAid and Cintas will report before the bell Wednesday. Micron will report after the bell.

Athena Strand affidavit: FedEx driver admitted strangling 7-year-old after hitter her with van, says warrant

A FedEx driver admitted to kidnapping and strangling 7-year-old Athena Strand after he hit the child with his van as he made a delivery at her Texas home, according to a newly released arrest warrant.

Tanner Horner told investigators that although Athena was not badly hurt when he backed into her, he panicked and grabbed her as he was afraid she would tell her father what had happened, according to the warrant, which was obtained by The Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Mr Horner is accused of murdering the child on 30 November, while her body was recovered on 2 December from a location at the edge of the Trinity River in Wise County that he gave to police.

The arrest warrant states that video from inside the FedEx van the suspect was driving, confirmed that he had taken the child before her death.

Mr Horner then told investigators that he first tried unsuccessfully to break her neck, before strangling her to death with his bare hands in the back of his delivery van.

The 31-year-old from Fort Worth, Texas, was arrested on 2 December and is being held on a $1.5m bond in the Wise County Jail. He faces charges of capital murder of a person under 10 years old and aggravated kidnapping.

Wise County Sheriff Lane Akin has said that he and prosecutors have discussed pursuing the death penalty punishment if Mr Horner is convicted at trial.

Athena’s mother, Maitlyn Gandy, has said that the suspect was at the house of her ex-husband to deliver a package of Barbie dolls as a Christmas gift for Athena.

Investigators discovered during their hunt for the then-missing girl that FedEx had delivered a package around the time that the child had disappeared, the warrant states.

They worked with Big Topspin, a contractor for FedEx who the suspect worked for, and determined which FedEx van and driver had made the delivery.

Investigators then obtained video footage from cameras inside the van, which the warrant says showed the suspect talking to Athena after he grabbed her.

When a sheriff’s office investigator and a Texas Ranger interviewed the suspect he told them that she was dead, although she had been alive when he took her and gave him her name.

FedEx driver charged in 7-year-old Athena Strand’s death delivered her Christmas present before abducting her, mother says

CNN
 —

The FedEx driver accused of kidnapping and killing 7-year-old Athena Strand delivered her Christmas present –Barbie dolls – before the girl’s disappearance, her mother said Thursday.

Maitlyn Gandy called for stricter screening policies for delivery drivers at a news conference.

On an easel beside her was the package, a box of “You can be anything” Barbie dolls. It was the first time she’d seen the present, she said.

“Athena was robbed (of) the opportunity to be anything she wanted to be,” a tearful Gandy said. “I was robbed of watching her grow up, by a man that everyone was supposed to be able to trust to do just one simple task – deliver a Christmas present and leave.”

Athena disappeared from the driveway of her home in Wise County, Texas, on November 30. After a county-wide search, her body was recovered Friday evening, according to Wise County Sheriff Lane Akin. Authorities believe she was killed within an hour of her alleged kidnapping, but her cause of death is still under investigation, Akin said Friday.

The suspect, identified by authorities as a contract driver for FedEx, is 31-year-old Tanner Lynn Horner, Akin said. He allegedly delivered a package to Athena’s father’s home when she disappeared, authorities said.

Horner is being held in Wise County jail on capital murder and aggravated kidnapping charges, according to its website. Bond was set at $1.5 million, Akin said. CNN has repeatedly tried to locate an attorney for Horner, to no avail.

Horner told investigators he had accidentally hit Athena as he was backing up his delivery truck and although she was not seriously injured, he panicked and put her in the van before allegedly killing her, according to two arrest warrants obtained by CNN affiliate KTVT.

According to the warrants, one issued for each charge, Horner told authorities that he strangled the child because “she was going to tell her father about being hit by the Fed Ex truck.”

Horner was tracked down by his employer, a subcontractor of FedEx, after authorities learned Athena went missing around the time a FedEx delivery was made to the home, according to the warrants. Surveillance video from the truck showed the child inside, talking to the driver, according to the warrants.

After he was questioned, Horner led investigators to the child’s body and surrendered without incident, according to a warrant.

Akin, the sheriff, did not respond to CNN’s messages Thursday afternoon.

Authorities said Horner did not know the family or the child, Akin previously said.

Gandy said her goal is to affect change in hiring policies “so that monsters wearing delivery uniforms don’t show up on our children’s doorsteps.”

Her attorney Benson Varghese said he is still in the “investigation phase” of Athena’s case. Varghese said his office has put people they “think might be responsible” on notice, asking them to preserve any evidence related to the investigation.

Varghese said he plans to hold any person or corporation accountable “whose actions or inactions could have prevented this little girl’s tragic death,” but said he is not in a rush to file a lawsuit.

“The ultimate goal here is to ensure that no parent, or grandparent, or family member feels the loss that Maitlyn’s going through right now,” Varghese said.

In a statement to CNN last week, FedEx expressed its sympathies and directed further questions to law enforcement.

“Words cannot describe our shock and sorrow at the reports surrounding this tragic event. First and foremost, our thoughts are with the family during this most difficult time, and we continue to cooperate fully with the investigating authorities,” the statement reads.

Earlier this week, several school districts across Texas wore pink in honor of Athena.

Gandy, who appeared at Thursday’s news conference sporting bright pink hair, said she was grateful for the community’s outpouring of love and support.

“I have felt your prayers, I have read your messages and your letters and I see your pink everywhere.”

Athena Strand found dead after being kidnapped by FedEx driver: Wise County sheriff

The search for a missing Wise County little girl has come to a terrible end.

Wise County Sheriff Lane Akin confirmed that 7-year-old Athena Strand’s body was found Friday afternoon in Boyd, Texas. It’s about six miles from the Cottondale Fire Department.

Akin says a tip led them to a FedEx driver, who is believed to have abducted Athena from her home Wednesday night. The driver confessed to kidnapping her. Athena likely died an hour after her disappearance, the sheriff said.

Authorities say the driver, 31-year-old Tanner Lynn Horner of Lake Worth, was an independent contractor. He is being held in the Wise County Jail and is charged with capital murder and aggravated kidnapping. He is being held on a $1.5 million bond.

Athena’s biological mother showed up to Friday’s news conference. She didn’t want to talk on camera but said she is desperate to have her daughter home.

FOX 4’s Macy Jenkins was speaking to neighbors Friday afternoon off County Road 4599 when they were approached by law enforcement and told to move back immediately, but her body was not found there.

Sheriff Akin says information from interviews initially led them to that area. But it turns out that was incorrect as her body was recovered elsewhere.

Acting FBI Agent In Charge Jim Dwyer says it was digital evidence that led them to the FedEx driver, but he would not specify.

Sheriff Akin says Athena’s case has personally been one of the most challenging he’s faced.

“It’s one of the most difficult investigations I have been involved in because it’s a child,” he said. “It just hits you in your heart.”

Earlier Friday night in Lake Worth, Fort Worth police set up roadblocks on Somerville Place Road. Akin says that is where the suspect lives. They would not elaborate on whether or not any evidence

Athena got off of her school bus on Wednesday at 4:15 p.m.

Athena’s stepmother called 911 at 6:40 p.m. to report her missing from her home in Paradise. She told investigators there was an argument and later the girl was not in her room. The sheriff says she waited an hour to tell authorities because she went looking for the girl first.

A large group of law enforcement officers, more than 300 volunteers, dog teams, helicopters and thermal imaging technology participated in the search.

“We were able to cover vast amounts of area and talk to tons of people more quickly than we would have without them,” said Wise County Chief Deputy Craig Johnson.

Akin says the girl’s stepmother was the only adult home at the time of her disappearance. The father was on his way to South Texas for a deer hunting trip when he was told what happened.

The Wise County Sheriff’s Office says both of the girl’s parents and the stepmother have cooperated throughout the process. Akin said he did not recall any previous calls to the home.

Athena’s mother, Maitlyn Gandy, lives in southern Oklahoma. She told FOX 4 that she does have sole custody of her daughter but allowed her to spend the fall semester in Texas with her father and stepmother.

“We talked to both sides: the mother and the father and the stepmother. They have been very cooperative,” Akin said.

Athena’s mother drove down from Oklahoma and was seen talking to investigators at the search site.

Athena’s cause of death has not been determined. Her body is being taken to the medical examiner’s office.
