Nikki Haley to announce 2024 presidential run on Feb. 15

Nikki Haley, a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and South Carolina governor, is expected to officially announce her 2024 presidential run on Feb. 15 in Charleston, according to two South Carolina Republicans familiar with her plans.

Haley would become the first Republican candidate to join former President Donald Trump in the Republican presidential primary.

On Tuesday afternoon, Haley tweeted that she’ll have “a big announcement to share” on Feb. 15, and promised “it’s definitely going to be a Great Day in South Carolina.”

Haley’s last hint at a 2024 run came earlier this month during a Fox News interview, in which she called for “generational change” when looking at the future of the country.

“I don’t think you need to be 80 years-old to go be a leader in D.C.,” the 51-year-old Haley said. “I think we need a young generation to come in, step up, and really start fixing things.”

“When you’re looking at a run for president, you look at two things,” Haley added. “You first look at, ‘Does the current situation push for new leadership?’ The second question is, ‘Am I that person that could be that new leader?’ So, do I think I could be that leader? Yes, but we are still working through things and we’ll figure it out. I’ve never lost a race. I said that then, I still say that now. I’m not going to lose now.”

In the 2022 midterm election cycle, through her “Stand for America” PAC, Haley campaigned for Republicans up and down the ticket, and took trips to Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada, all early presidential primary states. She was also a closing surrogate on the trail for Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, and Senate candidates Dr. Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania and Herschel Walker in Georgia.

Haley has consistently polled third or fourth in early 2024 GOP primary surveys. In a Trafalgar Group poll in late January of South Carolina primary voters, Haley placed fourth, and got 11.6% of the vote in a field that included Trump, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, former Vice President Mike Pence and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Scott, another potential 2024 contender from the Palmetto State, is traveling to Iowa for the Polk County Republican party’s annual Lincoln Dinner in late February. On Wednesday, Scott announced a “listening tour” in Iowa and South Carolina that will begin in Charleston on Feb. 16, a day after Haley is expected to launch her presidential campaign.

“Nikki Haley stepped from the governor’s office to the international stage at the United Nations, rounding out credentials that would prepare her for a campaign like this. It’s like a countdown at NASA, T-minus two weeks and counting,” said Dave Wilson, president of the Christian nonprofit Palmetto Family Council.

Haley notched one symbolic win against Trump last year in the primary for South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District, when Haley backed Rep. Nancy Mace. Mace defeated Trump’s endorsed candidate, former Rep. Katie Arrington, by about nine points.

Trump told reporters traveling with him Saturday to South Carolina for a campaign stop that Haley had reached out to her ex-boss to inform him that she was considering running for the White House.

“She called me and said she’d like to consider it, and I said, ‘You should do it,'” Trump recounted. “I talked to her for a little while. I said, ‘Look, you know, go by your heart if you want to run.'”

Haley, a South Carolina native who was the first female and Indian-American governor in state history, told the Associated Press in April 2021 that she would not challenge Trump if he decided to run again. Trump nominated Haley for the U.N. ambassadorship after his win in 2016.

“I would not run if President Trump ran, and I would talk to him about it,” Haley said at the time.

Since then, she has suggested repeatedly that she was seriously considering a run. The former South Carolina governor told Fox News that her comments about not running against Trump were made before some perceived flaws of President Biden’s administration, such as the withdrawal in Afghanistan and the dramatic rise in inflation.

“When I look at that, I look at the fact [that] if I’m this passionate and I’m this determined, why not me?” Haley told Fox News.

Wilson said “it’s no surprise” Haley is the first Republican out of the gate to challenge Trump in a primary.

“She’s the type of person who doesn’t ever seem to back away from a challenge,” he told CBS News.

Green comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) will be closest to Earth on Feb. 1

On Wednesday (Feb. 1) a comet that has not visited the Earth since the last Ice Age and the time of the Neanderthals will make its closest approach to our planet, or perigee.

Excitingly, the comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF), which last passed through the inner solar system around 50,000 years ago, will be at its brightest during this time and may even be visible to the naked eye under the right conditions. The comet should be observable for days as it approaches our planet and then recedes on its way to the outer solar system.

During the comet’s perigee, it will come to within a distance of around 26 million miles (42 million kilometers) from our planet, which is equivalent to about 28% of the distance between Earth and the sun. If you’ve been waiting to get a look at C/2022 E3 (ZTF) before it speeds away, now is your best chance.

Related: How to see the green comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) visible in the night sky now as it approaches Earth

According to In-the-Sky, (opens in new tab) from New York City C/2022 E3 (ZTF) is circumpolar, meaning it is permanently above the horizon, and should therefore be visible for most of the night. It will be visible in the Camelopardalis constellation while at perigee, a large but faint area of sky devoid of bright stars and located close to the north celestial pole.

The comet will become visible at around 6:49 p.m. EST (2349 GMT) on Wednesday (Feb. 1) when it will be 49 degrees over the northern horizon. C/2022 E3 (ZTF) will climb to its highest point in the sky, 58 degrees over the northern horizon, at around 9:46 p.m. EST (0246 GMT). Following this it will disappear in the dawn light at around 5:57 a.m. EST (1057 GMT) on Feb. 2 while at around 30 degrees over the horizon to the north.

The comet will remain visible through early February, and will finally become visible to observers in the southern horizon this month. C/2022 E3 (ZTF) may be visible to the naked eye but should be easier to spot with binoculars or a telescope. The easiest times to spot it may be on Sunday (Feb. 5) when the comet is next to the bright star Capella in the Auriga constellation, or between Feb. 9 and Feb. 13 when it will shine near Mars in the Taurus constellation.

C/2022 E3 (ZTF) made its close approach to the sun, its perihelion, on Jan. 12 when it passed to within 100 million miles (160 million kilometers) of our star before heading towards Earth.

The orbital period of C/2022 E3 (ZTF) is 50,000 years according to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (NASA JPL) (opens in new tab), meaning the last time it came so close to the Earth or the sun our planet was in the midst of the last glacial period or “ice age” and Neanderthals still shared the planet with our early ancestors, the first homo sapiens.

C/2022 E3 (ZTF) was first identified in March 2022 by the wide-field survey camera at the Zwicky Transient Facility inside the orbit of Jupiter. Initially, astronomers suspected that it was an asteroid, but C/2022 E3 (ZTF) soon began to brighten as it approached the sun.

This is a behavior displayed by comets as they approach the sun and are heated by radiation from our star, with the material at their surface transforming from solid ice to gas in a process called sublimation. This pointed to the true nature of C/2022 E3 (ZTF) and hinted at its potential visibility over Earth.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Expected to Launch at Feb. 1 Event

Samsung’s Galaxy S23 is expected to be the focus of the phone maker’s next Unpacked event, which the company just announced will take place on Feb. 1. This year, a new lineup would compete directly with Apple’s iPhone 14 and Google’s Pixel 7.

Samsung didn’t provide details Tuesday about what to expect from the event, which will be held in person in San Francisco and also broadcast online. But the company typically releases new Galaxy S phones during the first quarter, including the Galaxy S22 last year. The announcement also follows leaks, such as this report from Korean newspaper JoongAng Daily that suggested an early February debut for the Galaxy S23.

If Samsung follows its previous pattern, we can expect to see three versions of its new phone: the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23 Plus and Galaxy S23 Ultra. Samsung’s invitation includes an image of three spotlights ranging in size from small to medium to large, possibly hinting as much.

Rumors from well-known leakers Ice Universe and Steve Hemmerstoffer suggest the new phones will have circular cutouts on the back for the camera lenses. The Galaxy S22 Ultra already has a camera like this. But the leak from Hemmerstoffer suggests it could trickle down to the Plus model, replacing the camera module currently found on the Galaxy S22 Plus. The spotlights in the event invitation could be a subtle nod to that design change, if it turns out to be accurate.

Samsung opened up reservations on Tuesday in the US for its upcoming devices. The company will offer $50 in Samsung credit if you ask to reserve one device or $100 for two devices. The offer runs through Feb. 1, and no payment information is required.

The company is expected to announce its new Galaxy S lineup at a time when macroeconomic headwinds have impacted phone sales overall. December reports from market researchers Counterpoint Research and IDC both point to weaker-than-previously-expected growth in global shipments for 2023.

Other than a slightly updated camera cutout on the new phones, we expect to see Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor in the Galaxy S23 lineup and possibly Samsung’s 200-megapixel camera sensor in the S23 Ultra.

Delta plans to offer free Wi-Fi starting Feb. 1

Delta Air Lines will offer travelers Wi-Fi for free starting Feb. 1, CEO Ed Bastian said Thursday.

Most U.S. flights will introduce the service next month, but it will become available on more each week, Bastian said during a presentation at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Delta’s plan to make Wi-Fi free, after years of studying the possibility, comes as airlines compete for customers in the travel rebound following the pandemic slump nearly three years ago.

“It’s free. There’s no fine print,” Bastian said Thursday. “We have invested over $1 billion to create this.”

Travelers will access the free internet service by logging in with their Delta SkyMiles frequent flyer account information, Bastian added.

Delta last March said it was outfitting more of its planes with fast Wi-Fi from Viasat and made it available for a $5 flat fee. The carrier already offers free messaging.

Most airlines charge for Wi-Fi: United Airlines charges $8 for members of its frequent flyer program and $10 to other customers, and Southwest Airlines charges $8. It’s free on JetBlue, which has some corporate sponsorships for the service, and Hawaiian Airlines is planning to offer free internet with SpaceX’s Starlink this year.

Some airline executives have been hesitant to roll out the free service until the service becomes more reliable.

BEIJING, April 3 (Reuters) – China on Sunday reported a total of 13,287 new daily cases for April 2, the highest level since February 2020, with the majority in northeastern Jilin province and the financial hub of Shanghai which has virtually locked down the entire city.

The country reported 1,506 confirmed coronavirus cases in the previous day, the national health authority said on Sunday, down from 2,129 a day earlier.

But the number of new asymptomatic cases, which China does not classify as confirmed cases, surged to 11,781 on Saturday compared with 7,869 a day earlier.

Of the new confirmed cases, 1,455 were locally transmitted, with 956 detected from Jilin and 438 from Shanghai.

Shanghai, home of 25 million people, will carry out a city-wide antigen testing on Sunday and mass nucleic acid testing on Monday, a senior official from the Shanghai health authority said at a press conference on Sunday.

“The main task is to completely eliminate risk points and to cut off the chain of transmission so that we can curb the spread of the epidemic as soon as possible,” said Wu Qianyu, inspector from Shanghai Municipal Health Commission.

Chinese Vice-Premier Sun Chunlan on Saturday also urged Shanghai city to “make resolute and swift moves” to curb the pandemic.

The city has been striving to stop the outbreak by imposing a two-stage lockdown, prompting manufacturers to halt operations and causing severe congestion at Shanghai port, the world’s biggest container transporting hub. read more

Shanghai Port Group said in a statement that “operation at Shanghai Port is stable and orderly”.

Refinitiv data showed that congestion off Shanghai for containers and oil tankers has been easing since March 31, but the number of bulkers queuing in outer Yangtze estuary anchorage jumped to nearly 90, the highest level since early October 2021.

An acute surge of vessels waiting is also recorded at ports near Shanghai, such as Ningbo in Zhejiang province, as some firms have diverted cargos to avoid prolonged logistics turnarounds.
