NASA reveals birds-eye image of Mars featuring one of the planet’s only residents

This is no ordinary photo of Mars.

The birds-eye view shared by a NASA satellite features a rare cameo from one of the planet’s only residents.

China’s Zhurong rover is visible as a small, purple dot nestled between wind-swept dunes.

The car-sized robot landed on the Red Planet in May 2021 and is one of three stationed there alongside NASA’s Curiosity and Perseverance rovers.

Early on in its mission, NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) spotted Zhurong and its landing craft from above.

The satellite has now shared its latest snap of the contraption complete with the long and winding tracks it’s left in its wake.

The image was snapped on March 11 by the MRO’s High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera.

The lander and backshell of the spacecraft are also visible in the composite, which captures the rover’s entire trip across the surface.

“This HiRISE image shows how far the rover has travelled in the 10 months since it landed,” the HiRISE team wrote in a blog post.

“In fact, its exact path can be traced from the wheel tracks left on the surface.”

HiRISE takes pictures that cover vast areas of Martian terrain while being able to pick out features as small as a kitchen table.

It’s helping NASA to better understand the evolution of the planet’s surface.

The team that operates the powerful instrument is based at the University of Arizona.

They’ll continue to analyse images of Zhurong – as well as Mars itself – as the rover continues its journey across the surface.

The rover, which is named after a Chinese mythical fire god, is studying the planet’s surface soil and atmosphere.

As well as examing the geology of the planet, the machine is looking for signs of microscopic life – past and present.

Elvis Trailer Drops Featuring Austin Butler Singing Presley’s Classics – The Hollywood Reporter

The first trailer for Elvis has arrived, and yes, that really is star Austin Butler singing in the Presley role.

Prior to the trailer’s release, filmmaker Baz Luhrmann and Butler pulled back the curtain and discussed their work on the glitzy and intense biographical musical during a virtual press conference. The director made it clear that the film would be solely a theatrical release. The Warner Bros. picture will explore the late Presley’s life in three sections; Luhrmann called the king of rock ‘n’ roll’s tale a “great canvas to explore America.”

Elvis took more than two years to make due to the pandemic. Co-star Tom Hanks made international headlines in March 2020 when he became among the first major stars to announce they had contracted coronavirus, which occurred during the Elvis production. The Oscar winner plays the infamous Colonel Tom Parker, Presley’s manager. The trailer opens with Parker saying some will see him as the villain of the story.

The 30-year-old star Butler was candid about the monumental task of embodying the music legend, who died in 1977 at the age of 42. “When I began the process, I set out to get my voice to be identical. That instills fear. So that got the fire burning,” Butler said. “For a year before we started shooting, I was doing voice coaching.”

Luhrmann made clear that the film features Butler’s voice for young Elvis and a blend of the Butler and tapes of Presley for midlife Elvis.

“I watched as much as I could, over and over,” Butler said of studying the abundance of Presley’s films and concerts. “I feel such a responsibility to Elvis and to [ex-wife] Priscilla and [daughter] Lisa Marie, and all the people around the world who love him so much.”

Elvis arrives in theaters June 24.

Xiaomi 12 series is unveiled, featuring Snapdragon 8 Gen 1

Xiaomi’s latest flagship lineup, the Xiaomi 12 series, were officially announced today, during a global stream by the company that lasted for two and a half hours.

This year, it’s a case of the triplets on announcement day—although only two may end up being sold internationally. Three separate models were part of today’s unveiling: the Xiaomi 12 standard version, the Xiaomi 12 Pro, and the Xiaomi 12X. As per Xiaomi’s tradition, of course, it wouldn’t be out of the ordinary for the company to add more models to the family down the line next year, but for now, these three are what we’ve got.

Although the official unveiling took place today, the new series will be launched for sale starting December 31 in China. It will be released to international markets at a slightly later date, which has not been announced as of yet.

The pricing in international markets is also still unknown, and we only have the pricing in China to go by—although it gives us no more than a ballpark figure, as retail costs don’t automatically translate between currency; each market gets its own pricing.

Xiaomi 12

Although Xiaomi has always targeted the low- to mid-range global market, its flagships are slowly but surely improving their specs from year to year. This year, both higher models are fitted with Qualcomm’s most powerful process yet: the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. This makes Xiaomi one of the first companies to launch a device using this SoC, along with Motorola and Realme.

The standard model, the Xiaomi 12, was announced in China with three available variants. The lower variant comes with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage and sells for CNY 3,699, which equates to around USD $580.

The second Xiaomi 12 variant comes with 8GB RAM and 256GB of storage, with a slightly higher launch price of CNY 3,999, or USD ~$628

The third choice features 12GB RAM and 256GB storage, and will sell for CNY 4,399, or about USD $690.

The screen will be a 6.28-inch Full HD+ AMOLED curved panel with a 120Hz refresh rate, spanning 2400 x 1080 pixels.

The battery will have 4,500 mAh and support up to 67W fast wireless charging, as well as wireless charging of up to 50W. On top of that, there’s also 10W reverse wireless charging, allowing you to charge your wireless earbuds directly on the phone itself.
There is a 50MP primary camera on the back, as well as a 13MP secondary wide-angle lens, and a 5MP macro lens to boot.

As for colors, the devices will be available in three matte colors: black, a light blue, and a pastel pink. There will also be a green vegan leather-backed variant, while the regular colors come with a glass and metal body.

A 4,500mAh battery sits inside this smartphone, and it supports 67W fast wired charging, but 50W fast wireless charging. 10W reverse wireless charging is also part of the package.

Xiaomi 12 Pro

This is the largest model in the series, featuring a 6.73-inch QHD+ AMOLED display with a 1440p resolution, protected by Gorilla Glass Victus. The LTPO 2.0 backplane also gives the Pro model a variable refresh rate of up to 120Hz, which slows down to save battery, depending on what’s being displayed on screen. The touch sampling rate is 480Hz, for the record.

The Xiaomi 12 Pro is also the only one in the series with an under-display fingerprint scanner, without taking away from any of the vast screen real estate.

The battery is a 4,600 juicer, which supports 120W wired charging, along with 50W wireless charging, and 10W reverse wireless charging.

The 12 Pro also has three rear cameras, although here, all three of them sports 50 megapixels. The main shooter features a Sony IMX707 sensor with a f/1.9 aperture 7P lens, the second has a f/1.9 aperture 5P lens, and the third is an ultra-wide camera with a f/2.2 aperture 6P lens, and a 115-degree field of view. The selfie camera features 32 megapixels—which is high even for some of the best flagships on the market.

Xiaomi 12X

This is the lowest-priced, lowest-spec model in the series, and may not make it to all global markets—although we don’t have any details on international availability yet. This is also the only variant that didn’t get the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, going for the older Snapdragon 870 instead.

The Xiaomi 12X also doesn’t support wireless charging, and its 4,500 mAh battery can be charged with a cable at up to 67W—same as the standard Xiaomi 12 model. The screen size is also identical, at 6.28 inches.

Its camera appears to have the same specs as the Xiaomi 12: a 50MP primary rear camera on the back, a 13MP secondary wide-angle lens, and a 5MP camera for macrophotography.

The Xiaomi 12 series is the first lineup in the company’s brand to be named this simply, without the trademark “Mi” moniker as part of the family name. This new naming system fell into place in July of this year, when the company officially ditched the “Mi” part in an effort to re-establish the main “Xiaomi” brand, and “unify [its] global brand presence and close the perception gap between the brand and its products.”

New dinosaur discovered with a bizarre ‘club like’ tail featuring seven pairs of bladed spikes to fight off predators

  • Fossils revealing a new type of dinosaur have been discovered in Southern Chile.

  • The creature features a tail that resembles a ‘war club’ and would have been used as a weapon.

  • The study explaining the find says the Stegourus is “unlike any dinosaur.”

Fossils in Chile have revealed a new dinosaur species with a spiked tail for stabbing and slicing.

The new type of dinosaur named the Stegouros has a tail “resembling an Aztec war club, with seven pairs of blades lining the tail.

An article published December 1 in the academic journal Nature describes a small, two-meter-long creature that survived on a plant-based diet and had a tail “unlike any dinosaur”.

Several of the fossilized remains of the Stegouros elengassen, a newly identified armored dinosaur that inhabited the Chilean Patagonia, are displayed during a press conference in Santiago, Chile, Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2021.(AP Photo/Esteban Felix)

The club-like tail was used as a weapon to inflict gruesome wounds on predators.

The discovery of the fossil places the dinosaur in the late Cretaceous period — a geological period around 100.5 – 66 million years ago — in southernmost Chile.

Due to the rear of the creature somewhat resembling a Stegosaurus, researchers gave it a name close to that species, however, later DNA analysis found that it was only distantly related, and was in fact a rare type of the ankylosaur genus of dinosaurs.

Dr. Alex Vargas, one of the lead authors of the groundbreaking study, called the dinosaur “the lost family branch of the ankylosaur,” AP reports.

Speaking to AP about this discovery, Macalester College biologist Kristi Curry Rogers said that the tail of the Stegouros is “really bizarre”, but that the finding was made all the more unusual by the location, as Southern Chile is “a region that hasn’t yielded these types of animals before.”

“It’s a really unusual weapon,” Dr. Vargas, a University of Chile paleontologist, told AP. “Books on prehistoric animals for kids need to update and put this weird tail in there. … It just looks crazy.”

Disney unveils first look at Obi-Wan Kenobi, featuring showdown with Vader

Disney+

We have our first glimpse of concept art for Obi-Wan Kenobi, the six-episode series coming to Disney+ next year, as well as a behind-the-scenes sizzle reel featuring star Ewan MacGregor and director Deborah Chow. There’s no actual footage, but fans are buzzing about the concept art showcasing Obi-Wan and none other than Darth Vader, lightsabers locked in battle. The sizzle reel briefly leaked online yesterday before being pulled. It was unveiled during the streaming platform’s Disney+ Day. (You can check it out on Twitter here.)

We first learned in August 2019 that the rumors were true about a Star Wars spinoff series featuring Obi-Wan Kenobi, with McGregor reprising his role as the iconic character. The actor himself made a surprise appearance at the tail end of a showcase presentation at D23 Expo 2019, Disney’s annual fan extravaganza. Then came the big news that Hayden Christensen was reprising his role as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy called it “the rematch of the century” at the December 2020 Disney Investors Day.

“There’s hunger for this character to come back,” MacGregor said in the sizzle reel. “The fans have been waiting long enough, you know?”

Yes, we do know. Back in 2016, the Hollywood Reporter conducted a poll asking fans which Star Wars character they’d most like to see feature in a spinoff film. Obi-Wan Kenobi was the overwhelming winner, yet for some reason, the studio opted to first make Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) instead. That film wasn’t quite the stinker many made it out to be, but it bombed at the box office. So Disney canceled plans for a Kenobi-centered feature film and reworked the concept into a limited series for its nascent streaming platform.

Disney+

Preproduction for the series started in January 2020, but then it was put on hold—partly due to the pandemic but also because Kennedy was reportedly unhappy with the script, which showed too many similarities with The Mandalorian‘s premise. Disney tapped Joby Harold to take on the rewrites. Shooting reportedly wrapped in September.

Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse are reprising their roles as Owen Lars and his wife Beru, who took on the task of raising the young Luke Skywalker on Tatooine. The cast also includes Moses Ingram, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell, Maya Erskine, and Benny Safdie in undisclosed roles.

Disney+

The series will be set 10 years after Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith—you know, the film where Obi-Wan faced off against Anakin Skywalker, who turned to the dark side and eventually became Sith Lord Darth Vader. Fans have long wondered exactly what happened to our favorite Jedi in the ensuing years before he returned in A New Hope. According to Chow (who directed several episodes of The Mandalorian), that period is going to be “a dark time” for Obi-Wan, who must deal with the loss of all his friends.

Chow said that Obi-Wan and other Jedi who survived Order 66 are being hunted down by the Empire’s Jedi Hunters in the company of Stormtroopers. (There have been unconfirmed rumors that Kang will be playing an Inquisitor.) Obi-Wan is on Tatooine with a mission to protect young Luke Skywalker, at least as the series opens, although the concept art hints at other settings familiar to the Star Wars fanbase, most notably Coruscant. So Obi-Wan’s journey is likely to take him away from that initial mission at some point.

There’s also a tantalizingly brief shot of a masked Christensen training with a lightsaber prop and concept art featuring Vader in what appears to be his castle on Mustafar. “We couldn’t tell the story of Obi-Wan Kenobi without addressing Anakin or Vader,” Chow said.

Obi-Wan Kenobi is slated for a 2022 release on Disney+.

In other Star Wars news, Disney unveiled a brief teaser for a documentary special, debuting today on Disney+, exploring the legacy of Boba Fett. It comes in advance of the upcoming premiere of The Book of Boba Fett. That series stars Temuera Morrison (Attack of the Clones, Aquaman) as the titular bounty hunter and Ming-Na Wen (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) as the mercenary and assassin Fennec Shand who works for him. Disney released the official trailer on November 1, giving us our first look at what we can expect from this latest project from showrunner Jon Favreau.

Drake Leaks Kanye West’s Drizzy Diss Track Featuring Andre 3000

The feud between Drake and Kanye West took an interesting turn this weekend.

Early Saturday morning (Sept. 4), in celebration of the release of his new album Certified Lover Boy, Drake was a guest DJ on SiriusXM’s Sound 42 radio show. During his set, Drizzy pulled off a villainous chess move with playing an unreleased Kanye West song featuring André 3000 and a closing sermon from DMX called “Life of the Party,” which was allegedly recorded for Yeezy’s Donda album.

On the song, which appears to be a diss track to Drake, Kanye mentions the OVO Sound leader by name and details a text exchange between himself, fashion designer Virgil Abloh and Drizzy.

“I put Virgil and Drake on the same text/And it wasn’t about the matching arc’teryx or Kid Cudi dress/Just told these grown men stop it with the funny shit/I might hire the whole team from ACG/So don’t text me like I’m Juanita JCV,” he raps.

Near the end of the song, ‘Ye delivers a final warning shot to the Toronto rap star.

“Told Drake don’t play with me on GD/And he sent that message to everybody/So if I hit you with a ‘WYD’/You better hit me with, ‘Yes sir, I’m writing everything you need’/I told you I was gonna take the summer back/So any of the cap, won’t take none of that/Where my muthafuckin’ red hat?” he spits. Stream the track at the bottom of this post.

Interestingly, Kanye’s cautionary verses to Drake are not what fans are excited about. It’s actually André 3000’s beautiful verse to his late mother Sharon Benjamin Hodo. Throughout his portion of the song, Three Stacks is asking Kanye’s mother Ms. Donda West to deliver his thoughtful messages to his mom.

“Miss Donda, if you see my mama, tell her I’m lost/You see, she’d always light a cigarette, we talk, I would cough/Exaggeratin’ a little bit so she get the point/Tryna get her to stop smokin’, I would leave and fire up a joint/Til I quit, started back up again, twenty years later,” he raps.

On social media, fans are impressed by Andre’s heartfelt and masterful storytelling about his mother Sharon.

“The way Andre 3000 tells a story should be studied by every rapper. The way he weaves through time, describes his acts, gives you multiple perspectives, and ties it up with meaning. His writing is masterful,” tweeted one fan.

Meanwhile, it appears that Drake isn’t done taunting Kanye. Early this morning, Drizzy jumped on his Instagram page and posted a photo of himself with his back turned with the caption reading, “Waste Removal.”

Listen to Kanye West’s song “Life of the Party” below.

LEGO reveals space shuttle Discovery set featuring Hubble Space Telescope

March 22, 2021

— Once described as the most complex flying machine ever built, comprised of more than 2.5 million moving parts, you can now assemble your own model of NASA’s space shuttle using just 2,354 pieces.

LEGO on Monday (March 22) revealed its new NASA Space Shuttle Discovery set, which not only replicates its full-size counterpart in amazing detail, but does so as it was configured for one of its most well-known and historic missions: the launch of the Hubble Space Telescope.

“I always liked that combination of very compact, almost miniature, but very elegantly detailed, and I think that’s exactly what the Hubble model within this set reminded me of,” astronaut Kathy Sullivan said in an interview with collectSPACE.

And she would know. Sullivan flew as a mission specialist on Discovery’s STS-31 mission in 1990, giving her a front row seat for the deployment of the observatory.

“I hadn’t known what to expect in terms of how large Discovery would be,” Sullivan said about her first time seeing the new LEGO set. “It’s about like two feet long. It’s really very impressive size.”

Designed with adult builders in mind, the LEGO NASA Space Shuttle Discovery packs a lot of detail into that two-foot (0.5 m) package. The landing gear deploys, the control surfaces on the wings (elevons) move and the payload bay doors open to expose the reflective radiators, the Canadarm robotic manipulator, the Ku-band antenna and even video cameras for the “crew” to monitor the activities outside.

“Translating this into LEGO was an exciting challenge,” Milan Madge, who led the design of the set for the Denmark-based toy company, said in a statement. “In the real vehicle, every inch of space is used in ingenious ways. Generally, in a LEGO model we can rely on the size to accommodate the structure that holds the whole set together, but on the Discovery Space Shuttle we needed to create a smooth exterior and an interior capable of holding the payload.”

It is not just the cargo bay that opens. The crew cabin opens to reveal the flight deck with the orbiter’s control panels and crew seats. Below that, the middeck includes the crew’s equipment lockers and the airlock leading into the payload bay.

“And for all I know, Bruce [McCandless] and I are represented inside that airlock, which is where we were stuck when Hubble was deployed,” said Sullivan with a laugh. “So I leave it to the intrepid modeler to determine if there are two spacesuited figures locked inside that airlock just like there were on Discovery on the day of the deploy.”

Sullivan was also surprised to find that the model features not only the vertical stabilizer- or tail-mounted speed brake, but also the elevons, the control surfaces on the orbiter’s wings.

“A lot of people look at the trailing edge of the shuttle’s wing and think of it as the traditional elevator like you see on the backend of an airplane’s wing,” she said. “On the space shuttle, it’s a combination of an elevator and an aileron, called an elevon. And so I thought, let’s see if they got the elevons right — they operate opposite each other. And indeed they got that right.”

“And you don’t have to just manhandle the elevons. In a very clever twist. you can twist the center main engine bell and that will rock the elevons back and forth,” said Sullivan.

The same attention to detail was given to LEGO’s model of the Hubble Space Telescope, which can either be placed into Discovery’s payload bay or displayed on its own included stand.

“Though this is a little bit of an anachronistic [detail], they’ve got the grapple fixture on the aft end that was put on by the final servicing crew,” said Sullivan, whose book “Handprints on Hubble” details the history of the space telescope, as well as her own story. “You can also see they’ve represented the lens if you look in the front end of it. It’s just really super.”

Produced in celebration of the upcoming 40th anniversary of the first space shuttle mission, the LEGO NASA Space Shuttle Discovery set will retail for $199.99 when it goes on sale on April 1 at LEGO Stores and on LEGO.com.

Complementing the set, members of the LEGO VIP loyalty program will also be able to redeem 1,800 points to receive a LEGO model kit based on another of Discovery’s payloads: the Ulysses space probe. Also deployed in 1990, Ulysses’ primary mission was to study the Sun.

In addition, beginning on April 18, LEGO stores nationwide will display real images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope that have been translated into LEGO form.
