2022 Qatar World Cup predictions, expert picks: Argentina, Brazil favored; could England bring it home?

Getty Images

A World Cup unlike any other is upon us with Sunday’s opener between hosts Qatar and Ecuador the beginning of the final chapter in a 12 year tale of corruption, human rights and geopolitics that has led world football to its first ever winter world championships. Indeed, the only thing that might bear much similarity to previous tournaments could be the football where there is a familiar look to the runners and riders who will be vying to lift the trophy.

As ever, Brazil and Argentina rank among the leading contenders with a coterie of European sides in the mix as well. Could there be a dark horse from the ranks of South America, Asia or Africa? Which big names will crumble under the pressure? Can the USMNT escape the group stages at the very least? Our team of experts have dived deep into the possibilities, permutations and predictions to pick their winners, both of the trophy itself and the individual prizes. Scroll down to see them in full.

Lions are favored for first time since November 2020

Getty Images

Lions head coach Dan Campbell finds himself in some uncharted waters this week.

Campbell is heading into his 19th game in that job and he is leading a team favored to win its game for the first time. They are hosting the Commanders at Ford Field and sportsbooks currently have the Lions favored by somewhere from 1.5-2.5 points over the NFC East team.

As noted by Eric Woodyard of ESPN.com, the Lions’ run without being a favorite predates Campbell’s hiring. They have gone 24 straight games as an underdog, which is the longest current streak in the league. The last time they were in the favorite seat came against the Panthers on November 22, 2020.

The Lions were one-point favorites on the road against a Panther team quarterbacked by P.J. Walker in that game, but they were unable to come through for their backers. The Panthers shut them out 20-0 and the Lions will be looking for a happier result in this week’s bid to stand tall as a favorite.

The buildup for the PGA Championship truly begins this week with the Wells Fargo Championship.

This year, the Wells Fargo gets a new venue, as it moves from Quail Hollow in Charlotte up north to TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm in Maryland. Fans might remember TPC Potomac as the host of the now defunct Quicken Loans National from 2017-18.

Last year in Charlotte, McIlroy ended an 18-month draught (for him) with his one-stroke win over Abraham Ancer. The last time we saw the Northern Irishman was at the Masters, where he used a final-round 64 to finish second behind Scottie Scheffler. McIlroy has made seven starts in the 2021-22 FedEx Cup season, with one win (CJ CUP) and five top-10 finishes under his belt.

Also in the field are the likes of Abraham Ancer and Tony Finau, who have made the trip up from the Mexico Open. McIlroy has a few Ryder Cup teammates playing this week in Matt Fitzpatrick, Sergio Garcia and Tyrrell Hatton.

While Ancer finished T42 in Mexico, Finau finished with a flourishing 63 in the final round to finish one stroke behind winner Jon Rahm. After a rough start to 2022 that saw him miss three out of four cuts at one point, Finau has finished in the top 35 in three straight and is showing flashes of potential moving forward.

Corey Conners is near the top of the board and will no doubt be a popular pick this week. The Canadian has been in stellar form since the start of March, finishing in the top 35 in all six of his starts in that span. His last two results were a T6 at the Masters and a T12 at the RBC Heritage, which also features a course that rewards ball-strikers like Conners.

The purse this week in Potomac is $9 million, which is the most in a PGA TOUR event (that means not including the Masters) since the WGC-Dell Match Play.

Past Winners

We’ll have to look at two events for this section.

Francesco Molinari won the last Quicken Loans National at TPC Potomac back in 2018, dominating the event at 21-under for an eight-stroke win. The year before saw Kyle Stanley beat Charles Howell III in a playoff after the pair finished at 7-under.

At the Wells Fargo, some recognizable names have won at Quail Hollow.

This tournament was canceled in 2020 due to COVID. The two previous years saw Max Homa (’19) and Jason Day (’18) come out victorious. Rickie Fowler and James Hahn, both of whom are in the field this week, also won at Quail Hollow.

McIlroy has the best history at this tournament, though. He has three wins at Quail Hollow, back when it was the Quail Hollow Championship in 2010 and then two at the Wells Fargo (’15 and ’21).

Course Breakdown

This year’s Wells Fargo Championship has been moved a little north from Charlotte to Maryland at TPC Potomoc. The change in venue is because Quail Hollow has a big assignment later this fall: the Presidents Cup.

Whoever wins this week is going to have had a good one with the irons.

TPC Potomac is a par 70 that will play right around 7,100 yards. There are only two par 5s on the course — Nos. 2 and 10 — and a potentially drivable par 4 at No. 14.

Strokes Gained: Approach, as it is most weeks, will be hugely important this week. Last week, driving distance was important with the wide-open fairways at the Mexico Open. This week, more precision will be required.

The final stop before Augusta National has arrived. The PGA TOUR goes from Austin to San Antonio this week for the Valero Texas Open, which has names of interests for bettors before the Masters.

Atop the opening odds board are two players who didn’t play the WGC-Dell Match Play last week in Rory McIlroy and Hideki Matsuyama. McIlroy opted to play at the Texas Open instead of the Match Play in order to prep for the Masters, while the reigning Masters champion has been recovering from a back injury that saw him withdraw from THE PLAYERS on the morning of the first round.

Outside of those two, Bryson DeChambeau is the biggest name in this field. The heavy hitter returned from an absence that lasted almost two months at the Match Play in uninspiring fashion, losing twice with one tie in his three group matchups.

Jordan Spieth and Abraham Ancer highlight the next part of the board. Spieth sent shockwaves through the golf world when he capped a stellar start to his year with a win at TPC San Antonio, which vaulted him to the top of some sportsbooks’ odds.

Masters Implications

The field at the Masters is nearly set.

The easiest ways to qualify are to be in the top 50 of the Official World Golf Ranking as of this morning, or to have won a tournament on the PGA TOUR since the 2021 Masters.

That will include the Valero Texas Open, which means a longshot winner this week would punch his ticket to Augusta National. We’ve seen plenty of them on TOUR this year already with the likes of Hudson Swafford, Tom Hoge and Sepp Straka, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility.

Among the notable names in this field who are not currently heading to Augusta are Keegan Bradley, Jason Day, Rickie Fowler and Maverick McNealy.

The Course

TPC San Antonio played almost 7,500 yards last year, which would make it one of the longer courses that players on TOUR will have seen this year. With that, players who drive the ball further than most tend to have an advantage here, although winds this time of year in Texas can play a big factor.

Ball-strikers should thrive here, especially if they’re able to stay in the fairway throughout the week. If the conditions are ideal, the winner this week could reach 20-under.

‘Most favored nation’: Biden to announce that US will move to revoke status for Russia

The move requires an act of Congress.

Each country is expected to implement this measure based on its own national processes. The sources made note of congressional efforts to revoke Russia’s permanent normal trade relations.

Biden will make the announcement Friday and Congress then is expected to introduce legislation.

CNN reported earlier Thursday that bipartisan talks in the Senate had been taking shape to take more aggressive action on Russia’s trade status — after the White House effectively watered down the House-passed bill banning importing Russian oil, natural gas and coal into the US.

The earlier version of the legislation had included a provision that would suspend permanent normal trade relations for Russia and Belarus. But the White House expressed concerns over that part of the bill, and ultimately it was excised. The bill banning Russian energy imports that passed the House Wednesday night instead simply called for a review of Russia’s status in the World Trade Organization.

Senate Finance Chairman Ron Wyden, a Democrat of Oregon, told CNN that he was engaging in talks with the top tax writers in Congress and the Biden administration about the matter, as pressure grew to include tougher language in the House bill when the Senate takes it up — as soon as next week.

“I believe the Russians — the inhumane behavior of Russia does not justify it to get the fruits of the international community,” Wyden told CNN.

Sen. Mike Crapo, an Idaho Republican and the ranking Republican on the Finance Committee, said he probably wouldn’t support the House bill without stronger language on its trade status — and made clear there would be an effort to amend it.

“The question is PNTR, which is absent. And then they had some other stuff on the WTO in there, which is kind of hollow if we don’t do PNTR,” Crapo said earlier in the day. “So, I probably would not support it because it doesn’t have the key things that you need for a proper trade response.”

This story has been updated with additional details Thursday.

Bucs favored by 3 over Rams, all four home teams favored in divisional round

Getty Images

After the Rams beat the Cardinals on Monday night, they opened as underdogs for Sunday’s divisional round game at Tampa Bay.

The Buccaneers initially opened as 2.5-point favorites and quickly moved to 3-point favorites over the Rams at most sports books. Bettors are showing faith in the Bucs even though the Rams won 34-24 when the teams met in the regular season.

The NFC No. 1 seed Packers are the biggest favorites next weekend, with a line of 5.5 over the 49ers on Saturday at Lambeau Field.

The AFC No. 1 seed Titans are 3.5-point favorites over the Bengals. That’s the smallest point spread the No. 1 seed has had in its divisional round game since the 2017 Eagles were 2.5-point favorites — and that was because the Eagles had lost their starting quarterback, Carson Wentz, and few expected Nick Foles to lead them to the Super Bowl.

In the final game of the divisional round, the Chiefs are 2.5-point favorites over the Bills, despite the Bills winning 38-20 at Kansas City when the teams met in the regular season.

All four home teams are favored in the divisional round.
