Not Familiar With BBC Documentary On PM Narendra Modi, Very Familiar With Shared Values: US

BBC aired a two-part series attacking PM Modi’s tenure as Gujarat CM during the Gujarat riots of 2002.

Washington:

“I’m not familiar with the documentary you’re referring to, however, I am very familiar with the shared values that enact the United States and India as two thriving and vibrant democracies,” US State
Department spokesperson Ned Price said on Monday, responding to a media query on a BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi which has sparked controversy since its release.

Addressing a press briefing on Monday (local time), Price said that there are numerous elements that bolster the US’ global strategic partnership with India which include political, economic and exceptionally deep people-to-people ties.

Calling India’s democracy a vibrant one, he said “we look to everything that ties us together, and we look to reinforce all of those elements that tie us together,” as he underlined the diplomatic ties that US and India share with each other.

He also stressed the fact that the partnership that the US shares with India is exceptionally deep and that both nations share the values that are common to American democracy and to Indian democracy.

“I’m not aware of this documentary that you point to, but I will say broadly, is that there are a number of elements that undergird the global strategic partnership that we have with our Indian partners.

There are close political ties, there are economic ties, and there are exceptionally deep people-to-people ties between the United States and India. But one of those additional elements are the values that we share the values that are common to American democracy and to Indian democracy,” he added.

Last week, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak defended Prime Minister Narendra Modi and distanced himself from the BBC documentary series, saying he “doesn’t agree with the characterisation” of his Indian counterpart.

Mr Sunak made these remarks on the controversial documentary that was raised in the British Parliament by Pakistan-origin MP Imran Hussain.

“The UK government’s position on this has been clear and longstanding and hasn’t changed, of course, we don’t tolerate persecution where it appears anywhere but I am not sure I agree at all with the characterisation that the honourable gentleman has put forward to,” Mr Sunak said while responding to Hussain’s question on the BBC report.

UK’s national broadcaster BBC aired a two-part series attacking PM Narendra Modi’s tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister during the Gujarat riots of 2002. The documentary sparked outrage and was removed from select platforms.

The Ministry of External Affairs responded to the BBC story by claiming that it was entirely biased.

While addressing a weekly presser in New Delhi, MEA spokesperson

Arindam Bagchi said, “We think this is a propaganda piece. This has
no objectivity. This is biased. Do note that this hasn’t been screened in India.

We don’t want to answer more on this so that this doesn’t get much dignity.”

He even raised questions on “the purpose of the exercise and the agenda behind it.”

“The documentary is a reflection of the agency and individuals that are peddling this narrative again. It makes us wonder about the purpose of the exercise and the agenda behind it; frankly, we do not wish to dignify these efforts,” he added.

Referring to apparent remarks made by former UK Secretary Jack Straw in the documentary series, Mr Bagchi said “He (Jack Straw) seems to be referring to some internal UK report. How do I have access to that? It’s a 20-year-old report. Why would we jump on it now? Just because Jack Straw says it how do they lend it that much legitimacy.”

“I heard words like inquiry and investigations. There is a reason why we use the colonial mindset. We don’t use words loosely. What inquiry they were diplomats there…investigation, are they ruling the country?” Mr Bagchi asked.

Prominent Indian-origin UK citizens condemned the series. Prominent UK citizen Lord Rami Ranger said the “BBC caused a great deal of hurt to over a billion Indians.”

Furthermore, the US Department spokesperson also said that the US has always called for regional stability in South Asia and that its relationships with India and Pakistan stand on their own.

He further stated that the pace and scope of dialogue between India and Pakistan is clearly a matter for the two countries.

‘We’ve long called for regional stability in South Asia. Our relationships with India & Pakistan stand on their own and we don’t see them as zero-sum. But pace, scope & character of any dialogue between India & Pakistan is a matter for the two countries,” Price said during the briefing.

New Resident Evil 4 Remake Trailer Shows Updated Ashley Graham, Ada Wong, and Other Familiar Faces

A brand-new Resident Evil 4 Remake trailer was revealed during today’s Resident Evil Showcase, showing Ashley Graham and Adam Wong, as well as providing a further glimpse of the gameplay on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

While the trailer doesn’t directly spoil Resident Evil 4’s reveal, it strongly hints at many of the mysteries behind the Los Plagas and the plight of the villagers in Spain. The trailer also features updated versions of Ramon Salazar, a familiar villain from the original Resident Evil 4, as well as Ashley Graham.

Resident Evil 4 Remake – Story Trailer Gallery

Ashley Graham, as you may recall, is the president’s daughter in the original telling of the story. She’s obviously older in this version, with a more modern hairstyle. On the villain side, Salazar appears less like the comic villain than he did in the original, though he does retain his 18th-century European styling. You can see all of these characters and more in the slideshow above.

In addition to the trailer, Capcom provided a deeper look into their remake of Resident Evil 4 as a whole. They include the return of the classic merchant, as well as confirmation that the remake will once again feature the Tetris-like inventory system of the original.

First announced over the summer, Resident Evil 4 seeks to update the original survival horror classic for a new generation. It faces a tall order as the original game is one of the most beloved entries in the Resident Evil 4 canon.

Resident Evil 4 Remake is due out March 24, 2023.

Random: Great Scott! These Splatoon 3 Rewards Sure Look Familiar

Image: Universal Pictures

Splatoon 3 channels all sorts of young and hip themes, but it seems the third entry has also taken some inspiration from a number of popular movies from the 1980s. Warning: potential spoilers ahead!

As noticed by a number of Inklings and Octolings across multiple social media platforms, the latest outing has some items and rewards that seemingly pay tribute to movies like Back to the Future, Star Wars and perhaps even Ghostbusters.

Apart from Marty McFly’s visor and the Doc’s glasses, it seems Splatoon 3 may also have a reference to the ‘Keymaster helmet’ from Ghostbusters (known in-game as the Brain Strainer) and the Rebel pilot helmets featured in Star Wars (known as the “Astro helmet” in-game). Below are some more images of this Grizzco gear:

What do you think of these items? Will you be wearing them in battle? Comment below.

Galaxy Z Flip 4 leak shows a very familiar looking foldable

Just hours after we got our first glimpse at the potential design of Samsung’s Z Fold 4, unofficial renders of its smaller sibling — the Z Flip 4 — have also leaked via 91Mobiles and OnLeaks. But while the next Fold might get a redesigned camera bump, the Z Flip 4’s design looks almost identical to its predecessor. Externally it still has a two-tone color scheme with a pair of cameras and small notification display, while inside there’s still a 6.7-inch foldable display with a hole-punch selfie cutout in the top middle.

That’s not necessarily much of a surprise, nor is it definitely a bad thing. Samsung followed up its first Z Flip with the almost-identical Z Flip 5G just months later, so it’s already proved it’s happy to update the internals of its foldables without changing their external appearance. And since we were pretty impressed by last year’s Z Flip 3 (“the first folding phone for normal people”) an immediate design overhaul doesn’t feel essential, even if we wouldn’t say no to a slightly larger external display.

If Samsung is planning for its next Z Flip to be a spec bump, we hope that its specs actually get a decent boost. The rear cameras are in most need of improvement, which were both 12-megapixel last time around at a time when Samsung’s comparatively priced flagship Galaxy S devices are getting 50-megapixel main sensors and higher. Expect an official announcement in August, if Samsung follows the same schedule as last year.

The latest leak of Google’s upcoming Pixel Watch shows off a familiar design

We’ve been hearing rumors about Google’s Pixel Watch for years now, but it does finally seem like pieces for the project are finally falling into place. A purported render of the device shared by Evan Blass over at 91Mobiles lines up with past leaks and rumors, showing a device with a familiar circular design, physical crown, and Fitbit integration.

Of course, there’s also a lot missing from the render. The image doesn’t include the watch’s lugs (which would show how the strap will connect to the face) or give any idea of its overall build. If the image looks a bit funny, though, it’s perhaps because of the watch’s rumored bezel-less design (also seen in mock-up renders shared last year by Jon Prosser).

Interestingly, though, we have seen a smartwatch design that looks like this from Google before: the LG Watch Style, which LG designed in conjunction with the tech giant and released in 2017 to show off Android Wear 2.0. It has the same simplicity of lines and crown placement — though, of course, we’d hope for a much slimmer look five years on.

Look familiar? The LG Watch Style from 2017.

As my colleague Victoria Song argued in a recent piece, 2022 does look like the year that Google will make another big push into wearables. The company has been investing in the smartwatch space for years, buying Fitbit and parts of Fossil in 2019 and trickling out Android Wear updates, but it’s been slow-moving and decisively outmaneuvered by Apple.

We’re hoping that Google will reveal the Pixel Watch at next month’s I/O developers’ conference, but, as Song notes, there’s still lots of questions to answer: “Will the Pixel Watch primarily focus on fitness and wellness or will it also incorporate more smart features like LTE connectivity? Is this going to work equally well with all Android phones or will it prioritize Google’s own Pixel ecosystem? What about iOS?” Stay tuned to The Verge to find out more.
