Ex-Patriots tight end rips Jimmy Garoppolo: ‘You can’t win with a b—- for a quarterback’

Former New England Patriots tight end Martellus Bennett tore into former teammate Jimmy Garoppolo when he recalled Garoppolo taking over for Tom Brady for two games during the 2016 season.

Brady was serving a four-game suspension, and the Patriots played Garoppolo and Jacoby Brissett while the superstar quarterback was out. Bennett told Jason and Devin McCourty on their “Double Coverage” podcast the Patriots lost one of the games because Garoppolo was being a “b—-.” For clarity, Garoppolo didn’t lose a start when he was with the Patriots. Brissett, on the other hand, was 1-1 when he started.

“Bro, we lost two games. One of them was because Jimmy Garoppolo was being a b—. He decided not to play right before the game. Jacoby came out and played with a f–ked up thumb and played his heart out, but Jimmy was just being a b—- about it all,” Bennett said, via NBC Sports Boston.

“That’s why he … you can’t win with a b—- for a quarterback, first of all. That was the whole thing with him. He didn’t want to come out and do anything because his agent was trying to protect his body or some shit like that. Which, I can’t fault him for that. But like, you should have made that decision on Thursday. Now it’s Sunday.”

Bennett played for the Patriots in 2016. He had 55 catches for 701 yards and seven touchdowns.  New England reacquired him in 2017, and he retired before the start of the 2018 season.

“So anyways, he’s not going out there, so now Jacoby straps up and we lost to the Buffalo Bills. We shouldn’t have lost. It was just last-minute, trying to make adjustments for what Jacoby could do,” Bennett added.

Garoppolo was eventually traded to the San Francisco 49ers and rattled off five straight wins when he was thrust into the starting role. He was given a lucrative contract and later led the 49ers to a berth in the Super Bowl during the 2019 season, which the Niners lost. But injuries hampered him in 2020 and now in 2021.

San Francisco drafted Trey Lance to bring competition to the quarterback position earlier this year. Garoppolo was named the starter, but Lance has played in certain packages. Garoppolo will start this week. Lance is injured.

Ex-Patriots star Asante Samuel rips Bill Belichick after loss to Tom Brady, Bucs

Former New England Patriots cornerback Asante Samuel criticized Bill Belichick on Monday after the team’s narrow loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Samuel, who’s been one of Belichick’s biggest critics in recent years, tweeted his scrutiny. He said it appeared to still be difficult for Belichick to put a good team out on the field and that the coach has a tendency to devalue players.

“A lot of money spent in free agency but it’s still hard for him to put a good team together,” the four-time Pro Bowl defensive back wrote.

“Honestly… he isn’t good for the players, he is known for devaluing athletes,” he said of Belichick.

Samuel played for the Patriots from 2003 to 2007 before playing for the Philadelphia Eagles and Atlanta Falcons. He earned his first Pro Bowl and only All-Pro selection in his final season with the Patriots. He earned three Pro Bowl selections while with the Patriots.

Samuel was also a part of two Super Bowl-winning teams with Belichick and Tom Brady.

On Sunday night, the Patriots came up just short against Brady and the Buccaneers. Mac Jones led the Patriots down the field to set up Nick Folk for a potential go-ahead 57-yard field goal in the pouring rain. However, Folk’s kick would doink off the uprights and fall to the ground. Brady and the Bucs would go into the victory formation to seal the deal on their next possession.

Tampa Bay kicker Ryan Succop hit a 48-yard field goal with 1:57 left to give Tampa Bay the lead and eventually the win.

Brady and Belichick would congratulate each other at the end of the game. The former Patriots quarterback was greeted by plenty of ex-teammates on the field after the game.

Brady finished 22-for-43 with 269 passing yards. He didn’t have a touchdown pass.

Ronald Jones II made an appearance in the game and scored a crucial touchdown in the third quarter to give the Buccaneers the lead. Jones only ran the ball six times and finished with 25 yards. Leonard Fournette led the way with 91 yards on 20 carries. He also had three catches for 47 yards.

Cam Newton should ‘turn off the rap music,’ ex-Patriots quarterback says

Cam Newton faced more criticism Thursday — this time about the choice of music he listens to.

Scott Zolak, who played eight seasons in the NFL with the New England Patriots and the Miami Dolphins, and who started only one playoff game and appeared in zero Super Bowls, urged Newton to “turn off the rap music” and stay focused. He made the comment on 98.5 “The Sports Hub.”

“I’d turn off the rap music first of all. Because I think it’s distracting for Cam here. Because in between every throw he’s dancing,” Zolak said. “He can’t help himself.”

Comparing Newton to rookie Mac Jones, Zolak said the former Alabama standout is “here to work.”

Newton has been criticized for celebrating in the end zones and the way he handled the Carolina Panthers’ Super Bowl 50 loss to the Denver Broncos, but his choice of music appears to be a first.

SAINTS APPEAR TO HAVE FOUND THEIR WEEK 1 STARTER

For what it’s worth, Newton remarked last month about how Jones also listens to rap and was surprised about how much the rookie knew about hip-hop.

“Cool like the other side of the pillow,” Newton said of Jones. “You never really know when he’s down on himself. You don’t really necessarily know when he’s up either. He’s real cool. I’m surprised of his knowing-ness of hip-hop music. You catch him in the locker room every time quoting some Future, some Baby. But those are the kind of things you got to learn with time.”

Newton and Jones are in the midst of a quarterback competition. It probably won’t come down to who listens to the least rap music.
