Prisco’s NFL Super Wild Card Weekend picks: Cowboys finally beat Tom Brady; Giants exact revenge on Vikings

Week 18 is always tough when it comes to picking NFL games. There is so much uncertainty as to who is playing and who is not. So I can use that as an excuse for my best bets debacle last week as part of the “Pick Six NFL” podcast.

I went 1-4, my worst week of the season. What a way to close the regular season. That dropped my record to 55-44-5, which is still solid, but the last two weeks have killed me in my race to beat R.J. White. Will Brinson, the host of the podcast, was long ago out of the running.

As for my CBSSports.com expert picks, I went 9-7 ATS and 10-6 straight up. That brings my record to 129-133-9 ATS and 169-101-1 straight up. That means it will take the playoffs to get me over .500 ATS, which I plan to do.

Let’s get a sweep of the wild-card weekend games. That’s right, 6-0. Let’s go.

Saturday, 4:30 p.m. ET (Fox)

Featured Game | San Francisco 49ers vs. Seattle Seahawks

The 49ers beat the Seahawks twice during the regular season, once with rookie Brock Purdy starting. He hasn’t lost a start yet, but things change in the playoffs. The intensity goes up. I think Kyle Shanahan will find a way to make it easy on Purdy, even in the postseason. The 49ers defense will be all over Geno Smith. This will get ugly.

Pick: 49ers 28, Seahawks 17

Saturday, 8:15 p.m. ET (NBC)

Featured Game | Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Los Angeles Chargers

This is a game featuring two of the best young quarterback in the league. Justin Herbert and Trevor Lawrence will both be playing in their first playoff game, but I don’t think that will matter. The Jaguars dominated the Chargers in blowing them out in Week 3, but this will be a lot closer. Both passing games should have big days, so it should be a shootout. Look for the Jaguars to make one more big play to win it as Lawrence wins the first of his battles with Herbert.

Pick: Jaguars 34, Chargers 31

Sunday, 1 p.m. ET (CBS, Paramount+)

Featured Game | Buffalo Bills vs. Miami Dolphins

Does Tua Tagovailoa play? If not, who does? The quarterback situation is in flux for Miami, but I don’t think it matters who plays. The Dolphins played well in losing to the Bills late in the season, but that won’t be the case here. Josh Allen and the offense will light up the Dolphins defense, while the Bills will limit the Miami big plays. The Bills will be moving on.

Pick: Bills 34, Dolphins 21

Sunday, 4:30 p.m. ET (Fox)

Featured Game | Minnesota Vikings vs. New York Giants

These two played on Christmas Eve, and the Vikings needed a 61-yard field goal by Greg Joseph to win it. The Giants gained 448 yards of offense that day and probably should have won the game. But they didn’t. Now it’s a road playoff game, which will be a challenge. Even so, I think Brian Daboll will take advantage of a bad Minnesota defense. This one should be high scoring, as Kirk Cousins and Justin Jefferson will make some plays, but it will be the Giants that win it with a late field goal this time to advance.

Pick: Giants 30, Vikings 28

Sunday, 8:20 p.m. ET (NBC)

Featured Game | Cincinnati Bengals vs. Baltimore Ravens

The big issue here is whether Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson can play. I will make the assumption that he does play here. He certainly will be rusty coming off missing five weeks, but he’s better than the alternative of him not playing. The Bengals have ripped off eight straight victories, not counting the canceled game, and they’ve looked every bit as good as the team that went to the Super Bowl last year. They beat up the Ravens last week, but that doesn’t matter. What will matter is Joe Burrow having a big day. The Bengals will move on.

Pick: Bengals 26, Ravens 19

Monday, 8:15 p.m. ET (ABC/ESPN)

Featured Game | Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys looked awful in losing their finale to the Commanders, but really what were they playing for with the Giants resting players against the Eagles? Nothing. So erase that game, even if Dak Prescott looked bad. The Bucs got into the playoffs with a losing record, and they have issues. It’s easy to sit here and say Tom Brady will turn it on in the playoffs. But I don’t see it. Not against that Cowboys front. Prescott will play better for the Dallas offense to get them into the next round.

Pick: Cowboys 27, Bucs 21

What to Expect from Marvel and Star Wars at D23

Unfortunately, not all the fun of D23 will be available to those watching from around the world, as Disney has already published a limited schedule of what will be streamed online. That will include much of what was discussed above, but not the blockbuster Hall D23 panel that will undoubtedly make the biggest splash.

D23 will include a panel on Friday focused on Marvel, Star Wars, and Disney’s upcoming video games which will be streamed online. The event is expected to include reveals from LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, Marvel’s Midnight Suns, and more upcoming releases.

When it comes to the big Hall D23 presentation, there’s no telling what Lucasfilm and Marvel Studios have to offer, especially having already had some massive reveals earlier in the year. The MCU is expected to highlight the likes of Werewolf by Night, Deadpool 3, and more, while Star Wars goes big on the future of the MandoVerse and its other Disney+ content.

Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige and Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy will make their big D23 presentations on Saturday, September 10.

A Russian spy satellite has been launched at the exact moment the mysterious American USA-326 passed over the cosmodrome

On Monday August 1 , a rocket took off in the middle of the night from the Plesetsk cosmodrome in northern Russia.

Its mission, to place the military satellite Kosmos-2558 in orbit. If its precise role is kept secret, it is very likely that it is a spy satellite: its sensors are not turned towards the Earth, but towards another spacecraft.

The best clue to the purpose of this mysterious satellite launch is another, even more mysterious satellite. The USA-326, which was launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket on February 2, is a new model and we still know little about it.

This new high-tech reconnaissance satellite has aroused the curiosity of Russian counterintelligence officers. The Kosmos-2558 thus took off at the exact moment when the USA-326 was passing over the Plesetsk cosmodrome, and must be placed in an orbit almost identical to that of the American in order to fulfill its role of ‘ ‘inspector’ .

“The two orbits are extremely close, the only difference is a few tens of kilometers in orbital altitude,” Marco Langbroek , a specialist in spy satellites , explains to Gizmodo. the Kosmos-2558 is therefore close enough to get some interesting shots of the American newcomer. “We assume that [the Russian satellite] has optimized sensors allowing it to observe other satellites, unlike the usual observation satellites, equipped to take images of the ground” , specifies Marco Langbroek.

As long as the enemy machine remains at a sufficient distance so that there is no risk of collision, this stalking is absolutely nothing illegal. The United States was already surprised to indulge in this practice when in 2017, the military satellite USA-276 approached a mere 6 kilometers from the International Space Station .

More recently, in 2020, another Kosmos probe went to poke its electronic nose into the affairs of a US spy satellite . These two, definitely, do not leave each other.

Exact TIME of Marvel & DC’s Major Panels In 2022

San Diego Comic-Con has come again! After a three-year absence, the mother of all fan events has returned. The event will officially kick off on Thursday, July 21, with Wednesday the 20th serving as Preview Night. Fans are chomping at the bit for all the new reveals from their favorite properties, namely Marvel and DC. The two titans of the comic book world are slated to have several events at the Con.

Marvel Studios will, of course, return to Comic-Con’s Hall H to give audiences a glimpse of what the team has been cooking up, with projects like She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever on the docket to be discussed. Similarly, DC and Warner Bros. will be bringing out their big guns in the form of updates on Black Adam as well as Shazam! Fury of the Gods.

But when exactly should those soaking in SDCC at home plan on gluing themselves to their computers or mobile devices to soak in all the announcements? Have no fear, as everything in the schedule for both studios has been precisely mapped out.

Marvel and DC Confirm Panel Times

Marvel

The official Twitter account for DC Comics has tweeted an itinerary for their events during this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. Marvel Studios has also previously made clear, through their website, when they will be holding their two big panels. Check out the schedule of the major Marvel & DC panels below (Note: All times are listed in Pacific Standard and the bolded three panels are those that are expected to make the biggest splash):

THURSDAY, JULY 21

3:00 PM – A Look Inside the Making of the Gotham Knights Video Game

10:00 PM – HBO Max’s Harley Quinn Screening

FRIDAY, JULY 22

10:15 AM – Making a Mash-Up: Multiversus Panel

11:45 AM – Marvel Studios Animation (90 minutes long)

3:00 PM – 60 Years of Spider-Man: A This Week in Marvel Special Event

6:00 PM – The Green Lantern: Beware My Power Premiere & Panel (Animated Movie)

SATURDAY, JULY 23

10:15 AM – Warner Bros. Theatrical featuring Black Adam and Shazam! Fury of the Gods (60 minutes)

2:30 PM – Netflix’s The Sandman Panel

5:00 PM – Marvel Studios “mega-panel” (60 minutes)

SUNDAY, JULY 24

10:30 AM – Women of Marvel

Why Fans Should Get Hyped for SDCC!

The fun kicks off at 11:45 PT on Friday morning for those who are attending the Con in person. For fans on the east coast, the Marvel Studios Animation panel will begin at the time listed above: 2:45 ET.

For that panel in particular, one can almost assuredly expect to hear details on the upcoming Disney+ series X-Men ’97 and potentially also a peek at Spider-Man: Freshman Year.

WB and DC are bound to have surprises for their Theatrical Panel on Saturday. Black Adam and Shazam 2 will definitely be discussed, but there’s also a chance that other DC projects will be addressed. It will be interesting to see if The Flash is mentioned, given the state of its embattled star Ezra Miller. Movies like Batgirl and Blue Beetle also stand a chance of being brought up.

And then there’s the Big Kahuna, the panel which fans line up twelve hours in advance to see: The Marvel Studios Hall H presentation. Kevin Feige himself will be on-stage to talk about several MCU movies and shows and perhaps even a few surprises. Rumors persist of the studio holding back several reveals, however, and saving them for Disney’s D23 Expo in September.

But to any and all Marvel and DC fans, who will either be at SDCC in-person or absorbing everything at home through the power of the internet, the message is clear: Get ready!

Scientists pinpoint the exact moment in evolutionary time when mammals became warm-blooded

Scientists have pinpointed the moment in time our earliest ancestors evolved to be warm-blooded, and it happened much later and far more quickly than the researchers expected.

The discovery, made by studying the minuscule tubes of the inner ear, places the evolution of mammalian warm-bloodedness at around 233 million years ago — 19 million years later than scientists previously thought.

These semicircular canals are filled with a viscous fluid, called endolymph, that tickles tiny hairs lining the canals as the fluid sloshes around. These hairs transmit messages to the brain, giving it instructions for how to keep the body balanced. Like some fluids, the honey-like endolymph gets runnier the hotter it is, requiring the semicircular canals to change their shape so the fluid can still do its job. In ectothermic, or cold-blooded, animals, this ear fluid is colder and thus behaves more like molasses and needs wider spaces in which to flow. But for endothermic, or warm-blooded, animals, the fluid is more watery and small spaces suffice.

Related: Ancient toothless ‘eel’ is your earliest known ancestor

This temperature-based property makes tiny, semicircular canals a perfect place to spot the moment when ancient mammals’ cold blood turned hot, researchers wrote in a paper published July 20 in the journal Nature (opens in new tab).

“Until now, semicircular canals were generally used to predict locomotion of fossil organisms,” study co-lead author Romain David, an evolutionary anthropologist at the Natural History Museum in London, said in a statement (opens in new tab). “However, by carefully looking at their biomechanics, we figured that we could also use them to infer body temperatures.

“This is because, like honey, the fluid contained inside semicircular canals gets less viscous [syrupy] when temperature increases, impacting function,” David explained. “Hence, during the transition to endothermy, morphological adaptations were required to keep optimal performances, and we could track them in mammal ancestors.”

To discover the time of this evolutionary change, researchers measured three inner ear canal samples from 341 animals — 243 living species and 64 extinct species — spanning the animal kingdom. The analysis revealed that the 54 extinct mammals included in the study developed the narrow inner ear canal structures suitable for warm-blooded animals 233 million years ago.

Before this study, scientists thought mammals inherited warm-bloodedness from the cynodonts — a group of scaly, rat-like lizards that gave rise to all living mammals — that were thought to have evolved warm-bloodedness around the time of their first appearance 252 million years ago. However, the new findings suggest that mammals diverged from their early ancestors more markedly than expected.

And this drastic change happened surprisingly fast. Heat-friendly ear canals didn’t just appear later in the fossil record than the scientists expected. It happened far more rapidly, too — popping up around the same time the earliest mammals began evolving whiskers, fur and specialized backbones.

“Contrary to current scientific thinking, our paper surprisingly demonstrates that the acquisition of endothermy seem[s] to have occurred very quickly in geological terms, in less than a million years,” study co-lead author Ricardo Araújo, a geologist at the University of Lisbon in Portugal, said in the statement. “It was not a gradual, slow process over tens of millions of years as previously thought, but maybe was attained quickly when triggered by novel mammal-like metabolic pathways and origin of fur.”

Follow-up studies will need to confirm the findings via other means, but the researchers said they are excited that their work will help to answer one of the longest-standing questions about the evolution of mammals.

“The origin of mammalian endothermy is one of the great unsolved mysteries of paleontology,” study senior author Kenneth Angielczyk, the Field Museum’s MacArthur curator of paleomammalogy, said in the statement. “Many different approaches have been used to try to predict when it first evolved, but they have often given vague or conflicting results. We think our method shows real promise because it has been validated using a very large number of modern species, and it suggests that endothermy evolved at a time when many other features of the mammalian body plan were also falling into place.”

We all get turned on and turned off by certain things or people, but sometimes, you don’t know what or who that is until you actually experience it in the moment. So when someone you don’t expect to turn you on does, it can be even more startling and cause you to short circuit.

Paramount Global Distribution Group

So when u/AdAppropriate6975 asked, “What did your friend do that accidentally turned you on?” a bunch of people came forward with their stories:

1.“The entire group went clubbing. He was saying something that I could not hear. He bent down and spoke against my ear. I questioned our two decades of platonic relationship in that second.”

Paramount Pictures

“I didn’t even hear what he said.” —u/BitchIsLit

2.“I went to a friends house to play DnD. She made us all nachos and chicken. At the end, I went to wash up so as not to leave her with all our mess. As I turned around, she put her hand on my chest, stared me straight in the eyes, and told me I didn’t need to help. It was nothing overtly sexy, but she held my gaze and had her hand on my chest just slightly longer than would be expected. Anyway, we’re married now.”

“I know now that it was more than innocent to her. However, we’d been friends for nine years at that point, and in that time, there had been many hugs/sitting on laps/general friendly physical contact. This was the one that gave me the electric tingles though.

In nine years, I’d apparently been completely oblivious to all prior attempts at flirting. I’m so clueless at knowing when people are hitting on me it was mentioned in three separate speeches at my own wedding.” —u/gabjam

3.“We were joking, and she turned back, grabbed my neck, and lightly strangled me.”

Buena Vista Pictures Distribution

“I haven’t been the same ever since.” —u/axsirik

4.“They came to drop off food and medicine while I was sick. I was absolutely not in the mood, but I wish I was.”

—u/chrisandfriends

5.“We were at a party drinking, and I got handed a shot. I said, ‘This one is going to fuck me up.’ He looked right at me and softly said, ‘Don’t worry, I’ll take care of you.'”

“I threw that shot straight back.” —u/ms_ing

6.“She dropped me off at the airport. I said thank you, goodbye, and gave her a kiss on the cheek before turning to get out of the car. As I started to get out, she said, ‘Is that it?’ I turned back, locked eyes, and, suddenly, my heart started to ache. Suddenly, I didn’t want to leave. We embraced, but it was the first time we did so that wasn’t as just as friends.”

Universal Pictures

“I remember holding her in the car, not wanting to let go, and having this rush of feelings that I’d never let myself feel before. I remember when I’d gotten to my destination — I was going to visit my aunt for a few weeks — and my aunt mentioned that I seemed heart broken.

I knew at that moment I was in love with my best friend. We’ve been together ever since I got back home and just celebrated our 18th anniversary.” —u/Veeksvoodo

7.“A girl I became friends with on a school trip in high school fell asleep on my shoulders on the ride back.”

“I’m still coasting on that memory.” —u/[deleted]

8.“I fumbled a move one night dancing with a friend. I thought he was going to dip me, but he spun me instead. Still, my mistake was enough for him to notice, so he dipped me and said, ‘There, I’ve got you this time.'”

“No right to be as hot as it was.” —u/InsideJokeQRD

9.“She did that thing that girls do where they tilt their head. She was just listening to me talk about MRSA (we’re nursing students) and kind of smiling, listening to me go into depth about the illness for a test review. Then, she ever so slightly tilted her head and kept her very pretty eyes directly on mine. That, mixed with the slight smile, got my stomach in knots, and I just started stuttering like a fool.”

CBS Media Ventures

“It only happened like a week ago.” —u/bayala43

10.“She tackled me — not in a playful way, either. She was trying her best to take me down (and generally succeeded). We were always just friends, but in those moments after we’d hit the ground, I sometimes felt a little different about it.”

—u/Buhpuh

11.“I was pretty good, if not best, friends with someone I never thought I would be attracted to. We were at the bar one night, and I was cold. He took his favorite jacket, put it over my shoulders, and hugged me.”

NBCUniversal Syndication Studios

“I got a feeling for him I’ll never forget after that.” —u/Gizmottto

12.“I asked her outside a party if my eyeliner had smudged. She took my jaw in her hands and, gently but firmly, turned my face back and forth to examine my makeup. Then, she lightly patted my cheek and said it looked fine. I couldn’t even thank her, I just nodded.”

“We moved on while I gathered myself, lol.” —u/anypebble

13.“He rolled his sleeves up and reversed perfectly. Yes, it was in a manual car. Yes, he did put his hand on the back of my chair.”

“It was a hot summer’s day, so he rolled up his sleeves before we got in the car.” —u/Potential-Skin-8610

14.“I was annoying him, so he picked me up over his shoulder and dropped me on the couch. No biggie.”

NBCUniversal Syndication Studios

“I was kind of hoping he’d spank me after propping me over his shoulder, but…” —u/Desperate-Exit692

15.“I am very tactile, and he isn’t tactile with anyone else. However, he would always pull me next to him when we were outside and it was chilly, sit into my space at work meetings, and put his hand on my lower back when I was walking in front of or next to him. It was nothing overtly sexual, but the fact he didn’t do that with anyone else…”

“Oh, my.” —u/driftwood-and-waves

16.“I went out for a drink one night with my friend. A guy who I knew was hitting on me, asking me to go home with him, and being really aggressive. I turned him down, and the guy immediately turned on my friend. He got in my friend’s face, saying that it was his fault that I wouldn’t go home with him and that he was a cock block. My friend just stood his ground, crossed his arms, and told him to leave in a very calm and firm voice. The drunk guy eventually left, but it was such a turn on to see my friend remain so level-headed and calm in a tense situation when I’m used to guys being so reactive.”

“It was super hot.” —u/idunno324

17.“It wasn’t necessarily a turn on, but when I was in art school, we went to a museum with a clown exhibit. One of my classmates — whom I had very little prior interaction with — had a fear of clowns. At a certain point, something spooked her, and she grabbed my arm. I felt like, ‘Me big monkey, me keep pretty lady safe.'”

“As stupid as it was, I had a little crush on her afterwards.” —u/lord_bubblewater

18.“She showed me how the tattoo on the back of her upper thigh moves when she bends over. I was 19, and she was wearing short shorts. That was enough to make me blush.”

Warner Bros. Television Distribution

—u/GIMike03

19.“A button popped on her shirt, exposing more tit than she ever exposed around me. We ended up getting married. It was a happy accident.”

“We’re going on 10 years, too.” —u/Chromeasshole

20.“Helping me put on a tie because I didn’t know how.”

—u/WWWWWWVWWWWWWWVWWWWW

21.“We were wrestling, and I pinned her down. She said, ‘If this were a movie, we’d make out right now.’ I didn’t go for it.”

E! / NBC

“That was 15 years ago. I was just her maid of honor at her wedding. I love her, but oof.” —u/Bloodllust

22.“I was hanging out with some of my guy friends, and they all started kicking a ball around. I sat on the side near some cool flowers I wanted to draw. I wasn’t paying attention, and at one point, the ball started coming toward me. One of the guys ran right in front of me — like inches from me — to stop it. He then spent like five minutes checking if I was okay, and then he gave me head pats.”

—u/Ralts_Shinx

23.“Called me sir. I didn’t even know this was a turn on.”

Netflix

—u/PurpleIncarnate

24.“We both tried grabbing the same cup and looked at each other.”

“We’ve been together for awhile now.” —u/caughtbydeercam

25.“‘Get your butt in the car, we’re going to get Chinese food.’ He knew I wasn’t in a great state of mind, and we had been friends for a handful of years. He drove to find me when I wouldn’t tell him where I was. After food, he drove me to the store to get Nerf guns, and we battled.”

“I wound up marrying him.” —u/Signal-Block-1797

Olympic Skaters Exact Beautiful ‘Revenge’ Over Wardrobe Malfunction

French ice dance duo Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron put a costume snafu at Pyeongchang 2018 behind them once and for all when they became Winter Olympic champions in Beijing on Monday.

Four years ago, an outfit malfunction saw Papadakis’ breast accidentally exposed for much of their short dance routine. “It was pretty distracting, kind of my worst nightmare happening at the Olympics,” Papadakis said at the time. They won silver.

On Saturday, the duo wowed judges with their rhythm dance routine to a John Legend medley — setting a new world record score of 90.83 in the process.

“We are super happy with our performance, we are in a totally different place from where we were four years ago,” Cizeron told Eurosport on Saturday. “Mentally and in terms of preparation too. We did not have a good memory of the short program there. We are super happy with our performance so indeed, it is a little revenge.”

Monday’s free dance to French composer Gabriel Faure’s “Elegie” scored them 136.15 points, and secured them the gold medal.

“I think we don’t believe it yet. Honestly it feels completely unreal,” Papadakis said Monday. “We have been waiting for this. This is the medal that we wanted. My brain doesn’t understand it.”

Russia’s Victoria Sinitsina and Nikita Katsalapov placed second. U.S. duo Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue won bronze.
