Evo 2022 announcements recap, from Marvel vs. Capcom 2 to a brand new Fatal Fury game and so much more

Living in the land of crossplay and rollback

Evo 2022 was a spectacular return to form after its years away as a one-of-a-kind event packed with top competitors from all over the world, crazy tournaments and just a lot of people who love fighting games.

Even the developers seem to have stepped up their announcement game this year, and there’s plenty of big reveals you could have missed if you looked away from the action for just a few minutes.

That’s why we’d like to provide you all a somewhat quick roundup and review of all the big fighting game announcements from this past weekend.

Just about every company who had a title on Evo’s mainstage had something important to show, and even some of those who didn’t still brought excitement to the event.

So let’s start at the beginning and work our way forward.

Nobody has been able to officially purchase Marvel vs. Capcom 2 since the remaster was pulled from digital stores in 2013, but that’s about to change.

Arcade1UP announced they’ll be releasing a special MvC2 cabinet later this year.

Moreover, the home arcade system will come packing 8 games in total between MvC2, Marvel vs. Capcom, Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Marvel Super Heroes, X-Men: Children of the ATOM, X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse and Marvel Super Heroes in War of the Gems.

Pre-orders will go live next month for $599 USD, and more information can be found here.

Atlus listened to fan feedback and committed to adding rollback netcode to Persona 4 Arena Ultimax earlier this year.

After a while of silence, they dropped the reveal that Ultimax’s rollback update is now available for PlayStation and PC players.

The indie fighting game Umbral Core was first unveiled earlier this summer, and the developers released a teaser trailer for the upcoming title to show off the early gameplay and talk about some details.

This dark and atmospheric fighter will release an open alpha later this year as well as a Kickstarter to help them reach their full vision.

During their Evo panel, Arc System Works revealed the content roadmap for Guilty Gear Strive’s second season.

A crossplay beta test between PlayStation and PC players is planned to release sometime this fall followed by the full update shortly after.

Guilty Gear has one more DLC character releasing this year during the fall too while the remaining fighters will drop sometime in 2023.

A new balance patch is also scheduled to launch sometime during the winter season.

You can find more information here.

One of the more unexpected announcements this weekend came at SNK’s Evo panel where the developers stated rollback netcode is on the way for most versions of 2019’s Samurai Shodown — a feature the community has been requesting since the original release.

That rollback update will come sometime around the spring of 2023.

SNK had another big quality of life improvement reveal for The King of Fighters 15 too with the title set to receive cross-platform play between Xbox, PlayStation and PC in 2023 too.

More information can be found here.

The developers of Skullgirls announced Marie will be the final DLC character coming to 2nd Encore’s Season Pass following Black Dahlia.

Marie was originally included as the game’s boss character and holder of the Skull Heart, but she’ll finally become a playable roster member sometime in 2023.

You can find more information here.

In the middle of their $100,000 Evo side tournament, Warner Bros. revealed a look at the Season 1 roadmap of content for MultiVersus.

As was previously announced, Rick and Morty will be coming to the game as 2 separate characters, and the official launch of Season 1 is also set to bring with it MultiVersus’ ranked online mode and a classic arcade mode.

Players will also be able to obtain additional cosmetic items like Lebron James as Robin and Valkyrie Bugs Bunny costumes.

No release date has been set for the start of MVS Season 1, but you can find more information here.

Following their Evo finals, Bandai Namco finally announced that Dragon Ball FighterZ will indeed be receiving a rollback netcode update, but there’s a few caveats.

Firstly, many players will have to upgrade their current copies of DBFZ because the rollback patch is only coming to the newly announced PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of the game as well as PC.

On top of that, content support has official ended for DBFZ after 4 years, and the developers aren’t planning any more balance patches either.

You can find more information here.

Not content with just their earlier SamSho and crossplay announcements, SNK also brought with them a look at Team Samurai for KOF15 consisting of Samurai Shodown characters Haohmaru, Nakoruru and Darli Dagger.

The first 2 characters of Season 2 were also revealed to be Shingo Yabuki plus Kim Kaphwan, and they’ll be releasing early in 2023.

You can find the trailer and more information here.

For one last surprise, SNK dropped the bomb that a brand new Fatal Fury / Garou title has officially been green-lit and presumably started production.

There hasn’t been a new entry in the iconic franchise since Garou: Mark of the Wolves released all the way back in 2000.

They only showed a single image of the project, which seems to imply that Rock Howard will carry over his protagonist status from the last Garou.

You can find more information here.

Bandai Namco teased the very first glimpse of their next generation Tekken project after Tekken 7’s Evo finals.

It only included a brief shot of a highly detailed Kazuya Mishima, and we don’t yet know if the game will indeed be Tekken 8 or something else.

Tekken 7 is also set to receive some additional developer support as well with a new battle update dropping on August 17 to rebalance the cast and add some more features to the gameplay.

More information can be found here.

Although you may have seen them elsewhere, Capcom officially announced that newcomer Kimberly and Street Fighter 4 favorite Juri Han are playable characters in Street Fighter 6.

Both world warriors received slick new trailers that provided a taste of what their gameplay will provide in Street Fighter 6.

Tasty Steve and James Chen were also revealed to be among the in-game commentators included in Street Fighter 6.

You can watch the trailers and find more information here.

Guilty Gear Strive officially closed out Evo this year with the largest in-game tournament the series has ever seen, and Arc System Works had one last surprise for everyone.

The developers dropped Bridget’s gameplay trailer as the first DLC character of Strive Season 2 with yo-yos and teddy bears aplenty.

Oh, and you can play as the classic Guilty Gear fighter now.

You can find Bridget’s trailer and more information here.

And that wraps up our recap of every big fighting game announcement made at Evo 2022.

Let us know in the comments which of the big reveals were your favorite / most unexpected as well as your top moments from the tournament action.

EVO 2022: Bandai Namco Teases Next Tekken Game

Bandai Namco has shared just a glimpse of an upcoming Tekken project.

On stage at EVO 2022, after the Tekken 7 Grand Finals, Bandai Namco shared a trailer for its next Tekken 7 update. At the conclusion of a trailer, they showed the iconic Tekken cutscene of Kazuya Mishima throwing his father, Heihachi Mishima off a cliff.

At the point when the cutscene zooms in on Kazuya’s face, it instantly swaps from 1994’s PlayStation version of Kazuya to a very modern-looking version of the character. “Get Ready” then appears on the screen, before the trailer fades to black. You can skip to the 1:40 mark in the video below to watch the teaser.

Series director Katsuhiro Harada briefly showed up on the official EVO stream, but didn’t elaborate at all on the tease. While we don’t know for sure just yet, it’s probably safe to assume that this teaser is pointing towards Tekken 8. However, the teaser explicitly used footage from the original Tekken, so there’s a chance it could be a remake or reboot of the series. There’s nothing official from Bandai Namco just yet on what this project is, so we’ll just have to wait and see.

Tekken 7 originally released in 2017, and has received a ton of DLC support since launch. We gave the game a 9.5 in our Tekken 7 review, saying the game, “strikes a fine balance between accessibility to series newcomers and retaining much of its technical traditions.

EVO 2022: SNK Announces Development of New Fatal Fury Game

On stage at EVO 2022, SNK announced that a new entry in the long-dormant Fatal Fury/Garou series is in development. It will be the first entry in the series since 1999’s Garou: Mark of the Wolves. No release window or platforms were named, as the announcement was only paired with a short teaser trailer and a single piece of artwork.

Currently, SNK is only referring to the game as “New Fatal Fury/Garou”, but it does appear to be a follow-up to Mark of the Wolves, as the teaser trailer ends with the reveal of Rock Howard, the protaganist of that title.

The short teaser trailer gives us three mysterious hints of what to expect in the game’s story, including, “The City of Legend Still Breathes”, “Hungry Wolves Back on the Prowl”, and “A New Destiny Hidden In Darkness”. Along with the reveal of Rock, two silhouettes were shown in the background during the trailer. These two characters appear to be Billy Kane, a recurring character throughout the series, and Kain R. Heinlein, the final boss of Garou: Mark of the Wolves.

Also known as the Garou series, the Fatal Fury franchise began in 1991 with the release of Fatal Fury: King of Fighters on the Neo Geo. The series continued on the Neo Geo through the 1990s, until Garou: Mark of the Wolves launched in late 1999. The series came to a halt after that entry, meaning this newly-announced title will be the franchise’s first in over 20 years.

Even though the series has been dormant for over two decades, many of its characters have lived on through SNK’s King of Fighters series, which combines characters from Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting, and more. Characters such as Terry Bogard, Andy Bogard, and Joe Higashi are staples in the KOF series. Rock Howard, Geese Howard, and more have been added to KOF XV as DLC characters.

2 MultiVersus Fighters Banned from Evo 2022

MultiVersus players looking to get a better look at what which characters pro fighting game players prefer and how they use them can get that this weekend during the Evo 2022 MultiVersus tournament, but two characters won’t be featured in the fights. Both the Iron Giant and LeBron James – the latter being the first character released after the start of the open beta – are not playable during Evo 2022. A map has similarly been struck from the rotation for the duration of the tournament.

The two fighters weren’t restricted from the tournament because they were overpowered or unfair or anything like that, though depending on which MultiVersus players you ask, some might hold those opinions about the pair. Instead, they were banned from the tournament because these two characters are the only ones labeled as “experimental” when you’re viewing them in the roster. The same goes for the Cromulons stage that comes from Rick and Morty and was added not long ago.

In the official rules for this MultiVersus tournament, the guidelines specified from the start that both of these characters (and any other new ones should Warner Bros. release a surprise drop ahead of schedule) were restricted from the event.

“Iron Giant, LeBron James, or any other characters released after the start of Open Beta will not be allowed in the Evo 2022 MultiVersus Open Beta Tournament,” the rules said. “This is subject to change at the sole discretion of Warner Bros. and Player First Games.”

Aside from those restrictions, the tournament seems to be operating off of pretty standard rules and is being played in a 2v2 format. It started just yesterday and is underway once more again now on Saturday, so it’ll be interesting to see once things have wrapped up which characters proved to be the most possible throughout the competition. A quick look at the MultiVersus Twitter account for the game’s competitive scene shows that there’s at least a range of characters being played instead of just a few being spammed over and over again, though some like Batman and Bugs Bunny are certainly seen frequently enough.

Crossplay for King of Fighters 15, rollback for Samurai Shodown, and more announced by SNK at Evo

During their Evo panel today, SNK shared a handful of exciting announcements for both King of Fighters 15 as well as Samurai Shodown.

For King of Fighters this includes both short and long term DLC information, such as the release date for the recently revealed Team Awakened Orochi characters, and for SamSho it’s all about netcode.

Developers took to the stage to offer a few details and footage on how the three upcoming Team Awakened Orochi fighters, alternate versions of Shermie, Yashiro, and Chris, will play. They also offered a release date for the upcoming team: August 8.

The panel also noted that they’re working on cross-platform play for KOF15, but that it will not be ready to roll out until some time in 2023. Currently Sony console users can play with one another, but not with Microsoft users. This should be changing in the coming months, however.

Evo’s biggest reveals tend to happen on finals day, and SNK shared that they haven’t shown everything for this weekend just yet. Though we’re definitely excited to get our hands on Team Awakened Orochi in just three days, we’ll soon have yet another new team to look forward to as there’s another reveal slated for this Sunday.

Finally, another season of DLC is confirmed for King of Fighters 15 with additional information also slated to roll out on Sunday.

Samurai Shodown, which released back in 2019, will be getting rollback netcode for online play on almost all platforms. Developers are aiming for the spring of 2023 for this update, and will be available on all platforms save for the Nintendo Switch (due to technical limitations, according to the devs).

You can view the panel via the Twitch archive video here. It begins at the 4:40:10 mark and lasts for just over 30 minutes.

Evo weekend is here: How to watch the fighting game event of the year

Enlarge / The crowds this year will be smaller, and masked, but offline is back in Vegas

Evo

After a two-year pandemic-induced break the Evolution Championship Series (better known as just Evo), the annual celebration of all things fighting games, is back in Las Vegas this weekend. Thousands of fighting game players and fans will fill the halls and arena at the Mandalay Bay casino to make their attempts at a top 8 finish, get in casual games with people from around the globe, watch panels, browse Artist Alley, and just generally soak up a chance to be offline with the fighting game community again.

In a more normal year, I’d be there myself, maybe not trying for that top 8 finish, more like just trying not to go 0-2 in Street Fighter V or Third Strike. But despite a robust mask and vaccine policy I’m just not feeling like traveling or being in Vegas with the current state of the world. So I’m going to spend my weekend cozy at home streaming a ridiculous amount of content and trying not to feel like I’m missing out too much. If you’d like to join me here’s a quick guide to what the weekend has to offer.

An Evo overview

You may have heard of Evo before, perhaps from the infamous Evo Moment 37 video or from Sony’s acquisition of the tournament series in 2021. If you’re not already a fighting game tournament watcher, here are the basics of how Evo works. There are eight main games featured, which I’ll list below, as well as a huge amount of less official side tournaments. Each game has the same basic structure, you start in a pool of players, everyone on equal footing. Tournaments are double-elimination, meaning you have to lose twice to be out. If you can win several matches in your pool without being eliminated, you move up to the next one, eventually leading to a top 24 bracket, then a top 8, which leads to the grand finals.

Part of the excitement of watching pools is the upsets. The previous champion has to start the same as anyone else, and there’s no guarantee an unknown won’t hand them their first loss, putting them in the loser’s bracket and one game away from losing that top 8 repeat dream.

As you advance deeper into the matches, the level of play becomes more high level and tense, so if you’re less inclined to spend hours watching the safe bet is to catch a top 24 or wait for the top 8 to see the real high-stakes matches play out.

Every game will feature commentary by people who are experts in understanding and explaining the on-screen action. With a few basics under your belt and their patterns, you should be able to keep up even with games you’re not familiar with.

The key to understanding the double-elimination format is everyone starts out in the winner’s bracket. If you lose once you go to the loser’s bracket. Lose from there and you can sit and watch the rest, you’re done. Mathematically this means that when you get to top 8, half will be in the loser’s bracket, half in the winner’s bracket, and the grand finals match will have a winner’s side and a loser’s side.

To win the entire tournament from the loser’s side you need to beat the other player twice, once to send them to loser’s (known as resetting the bracket). Making a loser’s run is no easy task, but a bracket reset always gets the crowd hyped up. They love an underdog, but it also means another set to watch.

If you see an L or a W next to someone’s name on the stream overlay that’s indicating if they’re playing from the winner’s or loser’s bracket. The last thing that’s handy to know is most games are run as first to two, so you have to win two games to beat someone. This generally becomes the first to three wins in top 8.

Dominique “SonicFox” McLean congratulates Goichi “GO1” Kishida for winning the grand finals of Dragon Ball FighterZ at Evo 2019

Evo

The games

This year the main featured games at Evo are:

  • Street Fighter V: Champion Edition
  • Guilty Gear Strive
  • Mortal Kombat 11: Ultimate
  • Tekken 7
  • The King Of Fighters XV
  • Melty Blood: Type Lumina
  • Dragon Ball FighterZ
  • Granblue Fantasy: Versus
  • Skullgirls: 2nd Encore

All games will be streamed on Twitch starting Friday, August 5 at 10 am Pacific Time. A complete interactive schedule of all the games can be found here. Half the games will have top 8s from the main hall on Saturday. The other four (King of Fighters, Tekken, Street Fighter, and Guilty Gear) will have their top 8 on Sunday in the Mandalay Bay arena.

There are also community-run tournaments for an additional 52 titles, everything from the alternate World War II title Akatsuki Blitzkampf, to barely-a-fighting-game-kinda-like-frisbee-air-hockey Neo Geo classic Windjammers. A list of all 52 games as well as a viewer’s guide summary for each one can be found here, so check that out if you want to dig into the wider range of titles you might not be familiar with.

Playing in a top 8 in the arena at Evo is one of the highest levels of fighting game achievement.
