Clark County, Nevada, says 22,000 mail-in ballots being counted, results expected Saturday evening

Election officials in Clark County, Nevada, said on Saturday afternoon that 22,000 mail-in ballots are currently being counted and will be reported on later in the day.

In a press conference, Clark County Registrar Joe Gloria said he expects to report Saturday evening on 22,000 mail-in ballots that are currently being counted by his office, adding that 7,100 ballots still need to be cured, a figure that is down 2,500 from yesterday.

Gloria said that 268 new mail-in ballots were received on Saturday.

“As far as the ballots that are being processed today, we won’t stop today until sometime in the late afternoon, early evening,” Gloria said.

Gloria has said previously that 5,555 provisional ballots still remain to be counted.

Republican Adam Laxalt and Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto are currently locked in a tight Senate race that could determine the balance of power in the United States Senate with Laxalt currently holding a narrow lead that has grown increasingly smaller each day following Election Day.

Laxalt currently leads 48.5% to 48.41% by a margin of 862 votes with approximately 40,000-50,000 ballots left to count across the state, primarily in Clark County and Washoe County where Cortez Masto has continued to gain ground.

The state of Nevada has no automatic recount provision, which means that in order for there to be a recount, one side needs to request one and pay for it themselves.

Evening People Show Enhanced Fear Acquisition, Which May Increase the Risk to Develop Anxiety

Summary: The vulnerability of those with evening chronotypes to anxiety, PTSD, and related disorders may be mediated by altered fear acquisition.

Source: Bial Foundation

Do you know what your chronotype is?

Chronotypes are our circadian preference profiles, that is, they refer to the differences in performance that each person has in relation to the periods of sleep and wakefulness throughout the 24 hours of the day.

We can be morning type (if we prefer to wake up early and have a good performance in activities that start in the morning), evening type (if we are more productive at night or at dawn and prefer to stay up later), or intermediate (if we easily adapt to morning and evening schedules).

Circadian rhythms have been increasingly studied because they can help to understand the onset of mental disorders such as anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In this sense, researchers Chiara Lucifora, Giorgio M. Grasso, Michael A. Nitsche, Giovanni D’Italia, Mauro Sortino, Mohammad A. Salehinejad, Alessandra Falzone, Alessio Avenanti and Carmelo M. Vicario resorted to the classic Pavlovian paradigm of fear conditioning to study the neurocognitive basis of the association between chronotype and fear responses in healthy humans.

In the paper “Enhanced fear acquisition in individuals with evening chronotype. A virtual reality fear conditioning/extinction study”, published in the Journal of Affective Disorders, in August 2022, the researchers from Università Degli Studi di Messina and Università di Bologna (Italy), Leibniz Research Center for Working Environment and Human Factors (Germany) and Universidad Católica Del Maule (Chile) explain that they used 40 participants recruited among students from the University of Messina, 20 with evening chronotype and 20 controls (i.e., intermediate chronotype) to complete a 2-day Pavlovian fear learning and extinction virtual reality task.

Circadian rhythms have been increasingly studied because they can help to understand the onset of mental disorders such as anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Image is in the public domain

“To the best of our knowledge, only one study (Pace-Schott et al., 2015) to date explored the role of chronotypes on fear acquisition and extinction in healthy humans, but did not test intermediate chronotypes, the ideal control group as they are the most frequent chronotype in the population (Partonen, 2015)”, explains Carmelo M. Vicario, a researcher supported by the BIAL Foundation.

The results obtained in the two groups showed a higher fear acquisition response in evening chronotype individuals, compared to intermediate chronotype participants, confirming prior evidence that associated the evening chronotype with a higher risk of anxiety disorders (Alvaro et al., 2014; Park et al., 2015) and PTSD (e.g., Hasler et al., 2013; Yun et al., 2015).

“This study provides new insights about the influence of circadian rhythms on cognitive and affective processes, suggesting that the higher vulnerability of the evening chronotype to anxiety and related disorders may be mediated by altered fear acquisition,” says Vicario.

Abstract

Enhanced fear acquisition in individuals with evening chronotype. A virtual reality fear conditioning/extinction study

Circadian rhythms have received increasing attention within the context of mental disorders.

Evening chronotype has been associated with enhanced risk to develop anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The classical fear conditioning paradigm is a powerful tool to reveal key mechanisms of anxiety and PTSD.

We used this paradigm to study the neurocognitive basis of the association between chronotype and fear responses in healthy humans.

College football Week 10 preview: An afternoon in Athens, an evening in Baton Rouge

The college football season comes in two parts.

The first half consists of September and October when teams jockey for position in the Associated Press and coaches’ polls. It’s a time when fun non-conference schedules are played and the cupcakes come to town.

It’s also a time when conference play begins, setting the table for the second half of the season when the battle for conference championships will be settled.

TENNESSEE HEADLINES FIRST COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF RANKINGS, GEORGIA DOWN TO THIRD

And then there’s the second half of the season, when the College Football Playoff committee becomes the focus of the college football world as we inch closer to New Year’s Eve when the semifinals are played.

The first CFP rankings came out Tuesday, and they have provided us with one heck of a college football Saturday.

Let’s look at a few games to be aware of Saturday as the college football season kicks off Week 10.

No. 3 Georgia vs. No. 1 Tennessee – 3:30 p.m. ET, CBS

Would it be an overstatement to call this game “The Game of the Century?”

Maybe. But it sure has a nice ring to it.

The Vols will travel to Athens, Georgia, ranked No. 1 in the CFP rankings for the first time in program history. It’s a classic battle of opposites as Tennessee comes in with the top offense in the country and Georgia will counter with a defense that’s second in the nation in points allowed per game (10.5).

GEORGIA LOSES NFL DRAFT PROSPECT FOR THE YEAR WITH TORN PECTORAL AHEAD OF MARQUEE MATCHUP WITH TENNESSEE: REPORT

Georgia’s defense did take a big hit earlier in the week when outside linebacker Nolan Smith underwent surgery to fix a torn pectoral suffered in last week’s game against Florida.

Smith, a potential first-round NFL Draft pick, leads the Bulldogs with three sacks, seven tackles for loss and and 16 quarterback hurries.

But it’s a defense that is loaded with talent, fourth in the country in yards allowed per game (262.6) and 13th in the country in passing yards (177.1).

LEGENDARY GEORGIA FOOTBALL COACH VINCE DOOLEY DEAD AT AGE 90

“They’re athletic. They can run, all three levels,” Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel said Monday when asked about the Georgia defense. “They’re physical on all three levels. They don’t have any busts. They play their assignments extremely well. They make you earn it. It’s a great test for us. You’re going to have to win one-on-ones.

“That’s out on the perimeter. That’s in the offensive line — in the trenches — and you’ve got to be able to sustain drives.”

Georgia will be facing its biggest challenge of the year as the Tennessee offense has been unstoppable under Heupel and Heisman favorite Hendon Hooker.

The big-play Volunteer offense leads the nation in points per game (49.4), yards per game (553.0), pass efficiency (198.52) and yards per pass attempt (11.3). Its running game also averages 199.6 yards per game, good for 24th in the country.

“Tennessee is not necessarily a pass-happy offense,” Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said, according to ESPN. “They run the ball really well. I think you could say that statistically they have explosive passes. They are a running team that chunks it deep. They do a really good job with explosive pass plays. They commit to the run. There is a toughness there. Their backs run really tough.”

The winner of the game “between the hedges” will set itself up for a berth in the SEC championship game and establish itself as the top team in the country.

It should be a thing of beauty.

No. 10 LSU vs, No. 6 Alabama – 7 p.m. ET, ESPN

All eyes will be on the SEC for the two biggest games of the day as Nick Saban and his one-loss Crimson Tide head to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, for a matchup with Brian Kelly and the Tigers.

Both teams are trying to hand each other a second loss in the SEC. There are three teams — Ole Miss being the other — tied atop the West with a conference record of 4-1.

Alabama is coming off its bye week after drubbing Mississippi State and is hopeful the week off has allowed quarterback Bryce Young a few extra days of healing for his injured shoulder.

MICHIGAN STATE SUSPENDS FOUR MORE FOOTBALL PLAYERS FOLLOWING TUNNEL INCIDENT WITH MICHIGAN

In the two games since sitting out against Texas A&M, Young has completed 56 of 87 attempts for 704 yards, four touchdowns and zero interceptions.

The LSU defense will be tasked with trying to stop Young, a dual-threat quarterback, a type of quarterback that the Tigers’ defense has struggled against this year.

Against Tennessee, LSU allowed 239 yards passing and 56 on the ground to Hendon Hooker. Against Florida, it allowed 185 yards passing and 109 on the ground to Anthony Richardson.

But this is why Kelly left South Bend for the Deep South. He wanted a chance to beat the best.

“I want to beat Nick Saban,” Kelly said in the spring. “Who doesn’t want to beat Nick Saban? You know what I mean? I want to play him in the regular season. That’s the standard, right? That’s the standard. Now he’s a conference opponent.”

DEION SANDERS PLANS TO LOCK DOWN JACKSON STATE PLAYERS INSIDE HOUSTON HOTEL IN WAKE OF TAKEOFF’S KILLING

He has his opportunity and will need a big game from quarterback Jayden Daniels to get his first win against Saban in three tries.

Against Ole Miss in Week 8, Daniels threw for two touchdowns and rushed for three more.

On the season, Daniels has thrown for 1,812 yards and 12 touchdowns while rushing for 524 yards and nine touchdowns.

“(Kelly’s teams) always have balance on offense,” Saban said, according to The Tuscaloosa News. “They’re going to run the ball. They got a very good throwing scheme. Utilizing the personnel that they have very, very well.

LSU HEAD COACH BRIAN KELLY ON INSTANT REPLAY: ‘RUINING THE GAME’

“They’ve historically played very well on defense and special teams. It’s typical of what a well-coached team usually does. They’ve gotten to the point where — and all of his teams have been this way — they don’t beat themselves. You’ve got to execute and beat them, and I think that’s got to be the focus for our team.”

No. 13 Kansas State vs. No. 24 Texas – 7 p.m. ET, FS1

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian gets another chance to improve his record in true road games as the Longhorns head to Manhattan, Kansas, looking to avoid their third loss in conference play.

In the two years that Sarkisian has been in Austin, the Longhorns are just 1-6 in true road games, including blowing a 14-point lead against Oklahoma State in Week 8 at Boone Pickens Stadium.

It’s the same team that Kansas State smacked in Week 9, embarrassing the Cowboys 48-0 at home.

AUBURN FIRES FOOTBALL COACH BRYAN HARSIN FOLLOWING LOSS TO ARKANSAS

“I think that we’ve played good football,” Sarkisian said this week, according to ESPN. “I think we’ve got a team that’s committed for this final month of the season, but we have to be cautious not to look down the road. We’ve got to focus on this game, and we’ve got to handle our business this week, and it’s going to be a heck of a game.”

The Wildcats were without starting quarterback Adrian Martinez against Oklahoma State but didn’t skip a beat with backup quarterback Will Howard.

Kansas State rushed for 199 yards in Week 9, 158 of those yards coming from running back Deuce Vaughn.

MICHIGAN’S JIM HARBAUGH DEMANDS ‘SERIOUS CONSEQUENCES’ FROM TUNNEL INCIDENT, PLAYER SEEKING LEGAL ACTION

The Wildcats are 11th in the country in rushing yards per game with 228 yards. Texas is third in the Big 12 in rushing yards allowed per game (121.6).

Martinez has practiced all week, but Kansas State will not make a decision on who will start under center until closer to kickoff.

“We are prepared for both, we have to,” Sarkisian said Monday, according to ESPN. “Obviously the style of player that Adrian Martinez is in the quarterback run game is a real factor in the success they had with him. And then, obviously, Will Howard, his ability to really throw the ball and push the ball down the field.”

Notre Dame vs. No. 4 Clemson – 7:30 p.m. ET, NBC

There were many in the world of college football who disagreed with Clemson’s ranking in the first College Football Playoff poll Tuesday.

And while a win in South Bend, Indiana, certainly won’t quiet all the naysayers, a Tigers win over Notre Dame in primetime surely will prove to some that the Tigers firmly belong in the CFP conversation.

“The biggest thing is not making the game bigger than it is,” Clemson quarterback DJ Uiagalelei said. “It’s a big environment. It’s going to be a night game and all the external factors. I think, at the end of the day, you’ve just got to go out and play football.”

DEION SANDERS GIVES EMOTIONAL SPEECH TO JACKSON STATE AHEAD OF SWAC MATCHUP: ‘WE ARE ALL VALUABLE’

Uiagalelei has been much improved compared to last year, throwing for 17 touchdowns to just four interceptions. But Uiagalelei was benched by head coach Dabo Sweeney in Clemson’s Week 8 win over Syracuse in favor of freshman Cade Klubnik after Uiagalelei committed three turnovers.

“We’re people, and people are not perfect, Sweeney said this week, according to ESPN. “We have moments from time to time. You have to be made of the right stuff to be able to let it help you get better. We’re not 8-0 if it’s not for DJ. He had a bad game, but that’s why you have a team.

“I’m really proud of DJ, and how he’s handled himself and how he’s led. He knows he can’t go play like that. There’s a standard. He’s the ace. You’ve got to go do your job.”

He’ll be facing a Notre Dame team that has improved since its disastrous 0-2 start to the season, winning five of six games in head coach Marcus Freeman’s first season as the helm.

“This is what we do, we play in big games like this,” Freeman said. “It’s not a David vs. Goliath. This is a heavyweight fight. We’ve got a dang good football team.”

Silk Sonic Won’t Submit an Evening With for Grammy Nom

Photo: Johnny Nunez/Getty Images for The Recording Academy

Silk Sonic won’t be leaving the door open to more Grammy wins this year. The duo of Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak declined to submit their album An Evening With Silk Sonic to the Grammys, Mars told Rolling Stone. “Silk Sonic would like to gracefully, humbly and most importantly, sexually, bow out of submitting our album this year,” he said in a statement. Last year, Silk Sonic surprised with the most wins of the night — four including Record and Song of the Year — for their single “Leave the Door Open.” Those wins set An Evening With up as a top contender in a crowded Album of the Year field, which is expected to include Beyoncé (Renaissance), Adele (30), and Kendrick Lamar (Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers). The duo could have earned a few more song nominations too, likely for the single “Smokin Out the Window.” (An Evening With was released in November 2021, which qualifies for the current Grammys cycle.) “We’d be crazy to ask for anything more,” Mars said, adding that the trophies for “Leave the Door Open” were “icing on the cake” to their success. After Silk Sonic’s wins last year, Mars tied the record for most Record of the Year wins by a performer at three (alongside “Uptown Funk!” and “24K Magic”), and he has a past Album of the Year win for 24K Magic.

They aren’t the first musicians to withdraw from the Grammys, but they are the rare case of artists doing it for a positive reason. The Weeknd is boycotting the awards after being snubbed for “Blinding Lights” and After Hours in 2021 and criticizing the since-disbanded “secret committees”; he could’ve been a top contender this year for Dawn FM. Drake, who previously criticized the awards, also withdrew from competition last year after his two nominations were already announced. Pitchfork has since reported that he did not submit his album Honestly, Nevermind for 2023 consideration. Now, with this year set to relitigate past controversies like Adele’s win over Beyoncé for 25 and Taylor Swift’s win over Lamar for 1989, could more artists be set to follow Silk Sonic’s steps? Maybe chief Beyhive member Adele?

See the moon visit Jupiter Saturday evening (Oct. 8)

On Saturday evening (Oct. 8), should local weather conditions permit, you’ll be able to enjoy a view of a waxing gibbous moon hovering near to the “king of the planets,” Jupiter.

Both will be posed about one-quarter up in the east-southeast part of the sky as darkness begins to fall. The moon, which will be less than 24 hours from full phase — 99-percent illuminated by the sun — will be situated just below and to the left of Jupiter, a distance measuring roughly 4 degrees.

To gauge how wide 4 degrees is, your clenched fist held at arm’s length is equal to roughly 10 degrees. So, Jupiter and the moon will be separated by less than half a fist on Saturday night. In addition, the moon measures one-half degree wide. However, because of an optical illusion, the moon actually appears twice as big as it actually is to our eyes. Thus, while the separation between the moon and Jupiter seemingly should be equal to eight moon widths, when you see them in the sky on Saturday evening, the two will appear to be much closer — to some, perhaps less than half the predicted “eight moons wide” distance.

Related: Night sky, October 2022: What you can see tonight [maps]

And yet, you don’t really need the moon to identify Jupiter; it readily attracts attention all by itself. With Venus currently deeply immersed in the glare of the sun and out of view, Jupiter has taken over as the brightest object in the night sky, save for the moon.

For the moment, Jupiter ranks as the second brightest object in the night sky and does not set just before 6:00 a.m. local daylight time. As twilight fades it is soon joined by the bright stars of early autumn. When you sight the moon and Jupiter on Saturday for instance, don’t overlook one of the landmarks of the sky, the Great Square of Pegasus.

Jupiter may be the best planet for amateur astronomers to observe; viewers with the smallest telescopes or even steadily-held binoculars will be able to identify its bright moons, and its disk shows more illuminated surface area than all the other planets combined.

For those with large telescopes of 6-inch or greater aperture, its cloud belts are readily visible as well as the famous Great Red Spot (GRS), a giant storm that has been raging on the planet for several hundred years.

An assiduous planet observer, Christopher Go of Cebu in the Philippines, has provided Space.com with an absolutely incredible image he recently shot (on August 27th) of Jupiter, using a QHY462C, camera which clearly shows the Great Red Spot crossing the planet’s disk.

Mr. Go notes: “Transparency [atmospheric clarity] was very poor, but there was excellent seeing [a very steady image]!”

A photograph of Jupiter taken in Cebu, Philippines on Aug. 27. (Image credit: Christopher Go)

And one final thought: If clouds hide your view of the moon and Jupiter on Saturday, don’t worry: They’ll be together again on Friday, Nov. 4th.

PM Update: Strong storms drop locally heavy rain into evening

* Flood watch from 5 p.m. until midnight *

5:30 p.m. — Downpours to cross Beltway over next hour

Scattered showers and storms have been progressing through the region over the past two hours, even prompting a couple brief tornado warnings because of some weak rotation embedded within the storms.

In the immediate area, the rain hasn’t been too heavy up to this point but radar shows downpours poised to track across the Beltway area over the next hour. Take it slow.

5:15 p.m. — The tornado warning described below has been discontinued as rotation has weakened.

5:05 p.m. — Tornado warning until 5:15 p.m. for extreme eastern Prince William, southeast Fairfax and northwest Charles County.

Radar indicates some rotation about 5 miles east of Dumfries headed east at 15 mph. Seek shelter if in the path.

3:10 p.m. — Widespread storms west and southwest of the District — eyeing Beltway area arrival between 4 and 5 p.m.

Storms with heavy rain and lightning aren’t far from the immediate metro region — stretching from around Ashburn through Warrenton down to Culpeper in Virginia. This activity is headed east and northeast and should reach the Beltway between 4 and 5 p.m. There aren’t currently any warnings with this activity but the National Weather Service issued a special bulletin cautioning rainfall rates could reach 2 inches per hour in any storms that form, triggering areas of flooding. We’ll update as storms get closer or any warnings are issued.

2:56 p.m. — Tornado warning for Culpeper and Fauquier counties discontinued as rotation weakened.

2:45 p.m. — Tornado warning for eastern Culpeper and southwest Fauquier County until 3 p.m.

East of Culpeper, radar showed rotation in a storm headed east along or just south of Route 15 at 15 mph, toward Remington in Fauquier County. The National Weather Service had a tornado warning in effect over this zone until 3 p.m. Seek shelter in an interior room of the lowest level of a strong building if you are in the path of one.

Original article from 2:30 p.m.

Muggy conditions have primed us for the potential for a few heavy showers and storms this afternoon and evening. A persistent storm or two could lead to some localized flooding, given rainfall rates of up to 1 to 3 inches per hour. There’s also a bit of a severe storm risk, with the potential for a few damaging wind gusts or even a quick tornado, especially south. Once we get through this mess, plan on increasing weather bliss.

Listen to our daily D.C. forecasts: Apple Podcasts | Amazon Echo | More options

Through tonight: Scattered showers and storms are a risk through the evening. While many spots don’t see much, a few could pick up several inches of rain in a short period, perhaps leading to a bit of flooding. Remember to “turn around, don’t drown” if you come across flooded roadways. Storms should tend to taper off within a few hours after sunset, with a few more showers possible overnight. Temperatures range across the 60s as cooler and drier air begins to filter in late.

View the current weather at The Washington Post.

Tomorrow (Tuesday): Nicer weather starts moving into town. You’ll notice a considerable drop in humidity by morning. Sunshine may prove a bit self-defeating, with abundant cold air aloft leading to some more cloud development. We should at least see partial sunshine, though. High temperatures are near 80. Winds are from the west around 5 to 10 mph.
