Biden administration appoints Kennedy as special envoy for Northern Ireland: ‘knifed Britain in the back’

President Biden appointed the grandson of Robert F. Kennedy to serve as a special envoy for Northern Ireland, for economic affairs.

According to a press release from the U.S. Department of State, Joseph Kennedy III will focus on advancing economic development and investment opportunities in the region while strengthening ties between the U.S. and Northern Ireland.

Kennedy served eight years in the House of Representatives, worked as an assistant district attorney in Massachusetts and volunteered for the Peace Corps.

BIDEN AND BRITISH PM TRUSS TALK NORTHERN IRELAND PROTOCOL IN CONGRATULATORY CALL

“He will draw from his extensive experience to support economic growth in Northern Ireland and to deepen U.S. engagement with all communities,” the release read. “In parallel, U.S. diplomats in Europe and Washington will continue to engage with political leaders on efforts to restore the Northern Ireland Executive and to resolve differences on Northern Ireland Protocol.”

While the Biden administration is painting Kennedy’s appointment to strengthen ties between the U.S. and Northern Ireland, others see this as a move to interfere with talks between the European Union and Britain.

Biden made a gaffe-filled speech in Delaware on Friday.

The appointment also comes at a time when tensions between Washington and London are high over the implementation of the Northern Ireland Protocol, which would dictate trade regulations.

NORTHERN IRELAND’S ‘TROUBLES’ MAY HAVE QUIETED, BUT THEIR ECHO HAS REACHED AMERICA

There are also fears that Kennedy’s record of being pro-Irish will taint his ability to remain fair and honest in his new role.

“I think it’s a hugely destructive move by the Biden White House,” Nile Gardiner, Director of the Heritage Foundation’s Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom told Fox News. “Former Congressman Joe Kennedy has a long track-record of pro-Irish nationalist statements, and he will not be acting as an honest broker or neutral figure here, and with good reason. Sinn Fein is already rejoicing at the news as they know they have a key ally in this position.”

Sinn Fein is an Irish Republican and Democratic Socialist Party, which Kennedy is reportedly linked to.

“This is a staggeringly bad decision by the Biden presidency and will result in a huge level of distrust in any involvement by the Biden administration in Northern Ireland issues,” Gardiner added. ” Biden has once again knifed Britain in the back and by making this appointment he is deliberately slapping Northern Ireland unionists in the face.”

Israel Envoy As ‘The Kashmir Files’ Row Snowballs

Nadav Lapid, an Israeli filmmaker, was the jury head at the International Film Festival of India.

New Delhi:

Israel’s ambassador to India today came down heavily on a filmmaker from his country, who called ‘The Kashmir Files’ a “propaganda” and “vulgar movie” at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. Envoy Naor Gilon also apologized to India in an “open letter” on Twitter, a day after jury head Nadav Lapid slammed the movie at the closing ceremony of the film festival yesterday.

‘The Kashmir Files’, directed by Vivek Agnihotri, revolves around the exodus and killing of Kashmiri Pandits from the Kashmir Valley in 1990. It has been mired in controversy since its release in March.

“An open letter to #NadavLapid following his criticism of #KashmirFiles. It’s not in Hebrew because I wanted our Indian brothers and sisters to be able to understand. It is also relatively long so I’ll give you the bottom line first. YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED. Here’s why,” tweeted Lapid this morning.

Gilon said Lapid abused the Indian invitation to the judges’ panel in the “worst way”.

“In Indian culture they say that a guest is like God. You have abused in the worst way the Indian invitation to chair the panel of judges at @IFFIGoa as well as the trust, respect and warm hospitality they have bestowed on you,” he added.

The envoy said the Israelis should be humble as Indians are consuming a lot of Israeli content, including Fauda TV series. “I’m no film expert but I do know that it’s insensitive and presumptuous to speak about historic events before deeply studying them and which are an open wound in India because many of the involved are still around and still paying a price,” he said in a long thread of tweets.

Gilon said he was “extremely hurt” to see the reactions in India that Lapid was doubting Holocaust and Schindler’s List, a movie based on Holocaust.

“I unequivocally condemn such statements. There is no justification. It does show the sensitivity of the Kashmir issue here,” said the envoy. “From your interview to Ynet the connection you make between your criticism of #KashmirFiles and your dislike to what is happening in Israeli politics was quite evident.”

The India-Israel ties are very strong and will survive the “damages” inflicted by his remarks, Gilon said in his tweets addressed to Lapid.

“As a human being I feel ashamed and want to apologize to our hosts for the bad manner in which we repaid them for their generosity and friendship,” said the envoy.

BJP leader Khushbu Sundar thanked Gilon and said his words acted like a “balm of comfort”. “The pain and trauma depicted in the film is not a display of distorted history but what Kasmiri pundits actually went through,” she said.

Jury head Lapid had yesterday said the jurors at the film festival were “disturbed and shocked” by ‘The Kashmir Files’. “That felt to us like a propaganda, vulgar movie, inappropriate for an artistic competitive section of such a prestigious film festival,” he said. However, the jury board has distanced itself from his remarks, calling them his “personal opinion”.

Myanmar junta frees Australian economist, former UK envoy in mass amnesty

  • Australian held for 650 days for state secrets breach
  • Opponents sceptical of junta’s motives
  • Turnell headed for Australia – PM
  • Amnesty a bright spot at ‘incredibly dark time’ – Blinken

Nov 17 (Reuters) – Myanmar’s ruling military on Thursday freed a former British ambassador, a Japanese filmmaker and an Australian economic adviser to deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi, officials said, among nearly 6,000 prisoners included in a mass amnesty.

Australia said economist Sean Turnell left Myanmar on Thursday and had arrived in neighbouring Thailand, while a diplomatic source confirmed former British envoy Vicky Bowman had also left the country.

Myanmar’s state-run MRTV showed footage of the pair as well as Japan’s Toru Kubota, signing exit documents with officials. The United States said its citizen, Kyaw Htay Oo, was released.

Turnell was arrested a few days after the army seized power from Suu Kyi’s elected government in February last year, ending a decade of tentative democracy.

The coup sparked chaos and a bloody army crackdown on dissent that has drawn international condemnation and fuelled an armed resistance movement against the military.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese thanked the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia for pressuring the military to free Turnell, who was found guilty of a state secrets violation and sentenced in September to three years in jail.

“I’ve just spoken to Sean Turnell, who has been released from 650 days of unfair, unjust imprisonment in Myanmar,” Albanese told reporters in Bangkok, where he is attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.

“He will travel overnight to Australia to be with his family.”

State-controlled media said the amnesty included 5,774 prisoners and foreigners were released “for the relationship with other countries and also for humanitarian purposes”.

Speaking in Bangkok, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the release was “one bright spot in what is otherwise an incredibly dark time.”

“Whether this signals anything more broadly about the intentions of the regime, I can’t tell you – too soon to say.”

‘HOSTAGE TACTICS’

Myanmar’s shadow National Unity Government, which backs the resistance movement, said it was heartened by the amnesty, but said the world should not be duped.

“These types of hostage tactics by the junta should not fool the international community into believing that the military has changed its colours,” said Htin Linn Aung, an NUG minister and spokesperson.

A junta spokesperson did not answer Reuters’ calls seeking comment.

Bowman, Britain’s ambassador from 2002-2006 who heads a group promoting ethical business in Myanmar, had been jailed for immigration violations.

Kyaw Htay Oo was detained on terrorism charges, media has reported. Kubota was last month sentenced to 10 years in prison for violating sedition and communications laws.

Human rights groups have said their detentions, as well as thousands of others, were politically motivated. The junta has denied that.

Japan’s chief cabinet secretary Hirokazu Matsuno earlier on Thursday said Japan “will continue to demand Myanmar take specific and appropriate actions to rebuild democratic society, and to solve problems peacefully and seriously.”

Others included in the amnesty were 11 celebrities plus Kyaw Tint Swe, a former minister and a close aide to Suu Kyi, according to state media.

Suu Kyi’s former ruling party spokesperson Myo Nyunt and prominent democracy advocate Mya Aye were among those seen by witnesses leaving the Insein prison in the biggest city Yangon.

“I will be together with Myanmar people no matter what the situation is,” Mya Aye said.

The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP), which has been documenting the military’s crackdown, said the junta had freed the foreigners to ease political pressure.

“Yet again, political prisoners are being used as bargaining chips,” it said.

Phil Robertson, deputy Asia director of Human Rights Watch, said people should not be jailed for expressing political views.

“One hopes this release will not be a one-off event but rather the start of a process by the junta to release all political prisoners,” he said.
