Man United prepared to grant Cristiano Ronaldo free transfer amid lack of interest

Manchester United have received no interest in Cristiano Ronaldo despite making him available on a free transfer since the summer, sources have told ESPN.

Ronaldo will miss Saturday’s Premier League game against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge after being dropped by manager Erik ten Hag as punishment for refusing to play as a substitute in Wednesday’s 2-0 win against Tottenham at Old Trafford.

The former Real Madrid and Juventus forward also angered Ten Hag by leaving the substitutes’ bench before the end of the game to walk to the dressing room and leave the stadium without the manager’s permission.

Having been criticised by Ten Hag in July for going home during the preseason friendly against Rayo Vallecano at Old Trafford, Ronaldo’s latest display of indiscipline has increased the prospect of the Portugal international leaving United in January.

But sources have told ESPN that the United hierarchy, led by American owners the Glazer family, have been willing to offload Ronaldo since he made it clear in the summer that he wanted to leave the club.

Sources have said that United, who signed Ronaldo in a €15 million deal from Juventus in August 2021, have not sought a fee for the player in the hope that another club would be prepared to take on his £500,000-a-week contract.

But aside from interest from Saudi Arabian team Al Hilal, United have had no enquiries about Ronaldo, with even ambitious and well-funded teams in Turkey proving to be unmoved by the prospect of signing a player who took his club goal tally to 700 with his strike against Everton earlier this month.

Sources have said that there is a hope within Old Trafford that clubs could emerge as potential options for Ronaldo if he enjoys a productive World Cup with Portugal in Qatar next month. And with six months remaining on his United contract, there is also the possibility of Ronaldo being loaned out in January should another club be willing to agree a deal to pay a proportion of his wages.

But with his 38th birthday approaching in February and just two goals in all competitions for United this season, Ronaldo is struggling to attract interest from clubs who could offer him an escape route from Old Trafford in January.

Liverpool, Portugal star Diogo Jota out of World Cup with calf injury

Portugal forward Diogo Jota has been ruled out of the World Cup in Qatar due to a calf injury, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said on Tuesday.

Jota, 25, was taken off on a stretcher deep into stoppage time during Liverpool’s 1-0 Premier League win against champions Manchester City at the weekend.

“Really not good news, yes he will miss the World Cup,” Klopp said. “Pretty serious injury in the calf muscle and now the process starts. That’s it pretty much.

“All the rest will now follow in the next few days. Very sad news for the boy, for us as well and for Portugal… I don’t want to put a time on it [his return]. It will be a long time.”

Klopp added that Jota would not require surgery.

Jota, who has scored 10 times in 29 appearances for Portugal, had only regained full fitness after missing the opening few weeks of the season due to a hamstring problem.

Asked how Jota had taken the news, Klopp said: “He’s surprisingly OK so far, a smart boy and he knew it when we carried him off. At that moment he knew it.”

“After such a good night at Anfield mine ended in the worst way,” Jota said in a statement on social media. “In the last minute one of my dreams collapsed.

“I will be one more supporting from the outside, club and country, and fighting to be back as soon as possible,” he said, adding “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”

Klopp also rejected claims he had made xenophobic comments before the bad-tempered clash with City in the news conference on Wednesday.

Liverpool condemn ‘vile chants’ heard from Manchester City fan section

Liverpool have condemned “vile chants relating to football stadium tragedies” during Sunday’s 1-0 Anfield win against Manchester City, issuing a statement that says the chants came from the section housing the away team’s supporters.

Chants of “murderers” and “always the victims, it’s never your fault,” were heard being sung during the first half of the game. Ninety-seven Liverpool supporters died as a result of the Hillsborough disaster in 1989; 39 Juventus supporters were killed during rioting in the stadium prior to the 1985 European Cup final against Liverpool at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels.

Rivalry between Liverpool and Manchester United has previously resulted in chants about the Hillsborough disaster and the 1958 Munich air disaster being aired by rival fans. The two clubs have since worked closely to eradicate such chanting.

However, the chants about Hillsborough and Heysel were clearly audible during Sunday’s game against City, and Liverpool have said they will work with the Premier League champions to stamp out future incidents.

Liverpool have said that graffiti “associated with the disasters” was also found to have been daubed in the away section following the game.

“We are deeply disappointed to hear vile chants relating to football stadium tragedies from the away section during today’s game at Anfield,” the statement said.

“The concourse in the away section was also vandalised with graffiti of a similar nature.

“We know the impact such behaviour has on the families, survivors and all those associated with such disasters.

“We are working with the relevant authorities and we will also work with Manchester City in order to do our utmost to ensure these chants are eradicated from football altogether.”

Chelsea sack Thomas Tuchel as manager after poor start to season

Chelsea’s new owners have sacked head coach Thomas Tuchel just three months after completing their takeover of the club.

Tuchel’s 100th and final game in charge of Chelsea was Tuesday’s 1-0 Champions League defeat at Dinamo Zagreb and sources have told ESPN that Tuchel, 49, was informed of the decision on Wednesday morning.

– Stream on ESPN+: LaLiga, Bundesliga, MLS, more (U.S.)

A consortium led by L.A. Dodgers part-owner Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital acquired the club from Roman Abramovich at the end of May and oversaw a record-spend in a single window for Chelsea of more than £250 million on nine players.

However, sources have told ESPN that relations between Boehly and Tuchel became strained over the club’s transfer strategy, while further concerns over the team’s substandard start to the season prompted the ownership to act.

Members of the club’s backroom staff will take interim charge, possibly also for Saturday’s Premier League trip to Fulham, as the search begins for Tuchel’s replacement.

A club statement read: “On behalf of everyone at Chelsea FC, the club would like to place on record its gratitude to Thomas and his staff for all their efforts during their time with the club. Thomas will rightly have a place in Chelsea’s history after winning the Champions League, the Super Cup and Club World Cup in his time here.

“As the new ownership group reaches 100 days since taking over the club, and as it continues its hard work to take the club forward, the new owners believe it is the right time to make this transition.

“Chelsea’s coaching staff will take charge of the team for training and the preparation of our upcoming matches as the club moves swiftly to appoint a new head coach.

“There will be no further comment until a new head coach appointment is made.”

Tuchel was appointed as Frank Lampard’s successor in January 2021 and guided Chelsea to their second Champions League crown in May that year.

In February, he led Chelsea to the only trophy previously to elude Abramovich during his 19-year tenure, the Club World Cup, with victory over Palmeiras in Abu Dhabi.

However, Tuchel then came under intense pressure as the public face of the club as Abramovich was effectively forced into selling Chelsea after the U.K. government imposed sanctions relating to his alleged ties to Russia president Vladimir Putin.

Tuchel steered the club through a difficult period on the pitch as the Boehly/Clearlake consortium negotiated their purchase of the club.

However, disagreements emerged over the club’s transfer strategy and sources have suggested Boehly became concerned that Tuchel’s messages were not getting through to the players, many of whom had become frustrated at his approach.

Tuesday’s defeat in Zagreb was their third consecutive away loss, the first time that had happened under Tuchel, while the club lie sixth in the Premier League having won three of their opening six matches.

Speaking after losing in Zagreb, Tuchel said: “Of course I’m frustrated; there’s too much to analyse, I’m a part of it, and we are clearly not where we need to be. At the moment everything is missing.”

Jury fails to reach verdict

The jury in the trial of Ryan Giggs was discharged Wednesday after failing to reach a verdict on domestic violence charges against the former Manchester United star.

Giggs, 48, had been on trial for four weeks but, after more than 20 hours of deliberations, the Crown Court jury of seven women and four men failed to reach any verdicts.

Giggs potentially faces a retrial. He had been charged with assault and use of coercive behaviour against an ex-girlfriend. He had denied all of the charges.

Prosecutors alleged that Giggs assaulted Kate Greville, causing actual bodily harm at his home in Worsley, Greater Manchester, in November 2020.

He was also charged with common assault of Greville’s younger sister during the same incident, as well as using controlling and coercive behaviour toward his former girlfriend between August 2017 and November 2020.

During the trial, Giggs had said it was justified that he had a reputation for infidelity but added he has “never” physically assaulted a woman.

On Tuesday, Judge Hilary Manley told the jury she would accept a majority verdict in which 10 of the 11-person jury agree. The 12th juror had been sent home because of illness.

The jury had reported when asked Tuesday that it had not reached any unanimous verdicts after more than 16 hours of deliberations.

In his 23-year playing career at Manchester United, Giggs won 13 Premier League titles, two Champions Leagues and made 963 appearances.

He stood down as manager of the Wales national team in June, saying he didn’t want to jeopardise preparations for the World Cup later this year in Qatar. He had been on leave since November.

Real Madrid’s Casemiro intent on joining Man United

Casemiro wants to join Manchester United, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed, saying the midfielder wants “a new challenge” away from the Bernabeu.

ESPN reported on Thursday that the Brazil international midfielder — who has won five Champions Leagues and three LaLiga titles in nine years at Madrid — was considering an offer from United, with a decision imminent.

Casemiro, 30, is expected to receive a substantial pay increase at United, who have been looking to strengthen their squad after losing the first two games of the Premier League season.

“I talked about it with [Casemiro] this morning,” Ancelotti said in a news conference on Friday ahead of Madrid’s LaLiga game at Celta Vigo. “He wants to try a new challenge, a new opportunity. The club and I understand it. Casemiro — with what he’s done at this club, and with the person he is — we have to respect this desire he has.

“There are negotiations right now. Nothing is official, he’s still a Real Madrid player, but he wants to leave. If he goes and reaches an agreement, we have the resources to replace him.”

Ancelotti said he had not tried to convince the player to change his mind.

“I just listened to him,” the Italian coach said. “Hearing his desire to leave, there’s no way back … If the negotiations go well and an agreement is reached, we have to wish him all the best and look at what we have.

“It’s hard to speak now, because we don’t know what will happen in the next few hours, whether he stays or goes. But if he goes, we’re hugely grateful to him.”

Real Madrid have already added a potential replacement to their squad this summer, signing France international Aurelien Tchouameni for a fee of €80 million in June.

Ancelotti said the club would not look to bring in an additional midfielder if Casemiro completes his move to United.

“We have replacements within the squad,” he said. “We have a lot of good players who can play in that position. Tchouameni is one of the best midfielders in the market right now. Then there’s the option of Toni Kroos, who can play in that position, as he did in my second year here [the 2014-15 season], when we won 22 games in a row.

“We have [Eduardo] Camavinga, who played last year. We can’t replace Casemiro with a player with the same characteristics, but we have others with different characteristics … In my [AC Milan] team [Andrea] Pirlo played in that position and did well.”

“If Casemiro goes, we have six midfielders,” Ancelotti added. “[Luka] Modric, Kroos, Tchouameni, [Fede] Valverde, Camavinga and [Dani] Ceballos. I think six are enough to manage all season.”
