Activist investor Elliott takes stake in Slack owner Salesforce | Technology sector

The US activist investor firm Elliott Investment Management has taken a multibillion-dollar stake in Salesforce, the business software company that owns the Slack messaging platform.

Elliott, which typically buys stakes in underperforming companies and seeks changes to the way they are run, said it was looking forward to working “constructively” with the San Francisco-based company, without revealing any strategic proposals.

“We look forward to working constructively with Salesforce to realise the value befitting a company of its stature,” Jesse Cohn, a managing partner at Elliott, told Reuters.

Cohn, who has served on the boards of several technology companies including Twitter and eBay, called Salesforce “one of the pre-eminent software companies in the world”, adding that he has “developed a deep respect for [Salesforce’s co-chief executive] Marc Benioff and what he has built”.

However, Elliott, under the leadership of founder and co-chief executive, Paul Singer, is known for wielding the aggressive tactics associated with activist firms. In 2021 the British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline, now known as GSK, resisted attempts by Elliott to make its chief executive, Emma Walmsley, reapply for her job before the company underwent a restructuring. In the same year Elliott accused the UK energy firm SSE of having a “lacklustre” business plan.

In 2012, a dispute with Argentina over sovereign debt owned by Elliott led to the temporary impounding of an Argentinian naval ship in Ghana. Elliott also buys businesses and is the owner of the UK bookshop chain Waterstones.

Salesforce has been contacted for comment. Benioff co-founded the company and will be the sole boss when his fellow chief executive, Bret Taylor, leaves at the end of this month.

Benioff announced this month that Salesforce would be making 8,000 roles redundant, affecting about 10% of its workforce. In a message to staff, he blamed himself for expanding the company too rapidly during the coronavirus pandemic, amid surging demand for tech products and services as millions of people worked from home around the world. Salesforce employs nearly 80,000 people as of last October, compared with 49,000 at the beginning of 2020.

“As our revenue accelerated through the pandemic, we hired too many people leading into this economic downturn we’re now facing, and I take responsibility for that,” Benioff wrote.

The big US tech firms have made a series of redundancy announcements in recent months with Alphabet, the owner of Google, the latest to reveal job cutting plans, saying on Friday that it would reduce its worldwide workforce by 12,000 people.

Elliott has made many technology-focused investments. It recently won a board seat at Pinterest, the online pinboard business, when the company added the Elliott portfolio manager Marc Steinberg as a director.

Salesforce is valued at $151bn (£122bn) but its share price has fallen 32% over the past year. The size of the stake taken by Elliott has not been disclosed although the Wall Street Journal, which first reported the move, described it as “multibillion dollar” investment.

Elliott’s investment marks the second time in three months that an activist firm has taken a stake in Salesforce. In October, Starboard Value announced an undisclosed stake and said Salesforce was suffering from a valuation discount due to a “subpar mix of growth and profitability”.

Starboard’s chief executive, Jeffrey Smith, said at the time that his firm had been engaging with management and that new executives, including Taylor who was promoted to the Salesforce role in November 2021, were better focused on balancing growth aspirations and profit delivery.

Elliott has been approached for comment.

Liverpool FC — Jürgen Klopp on Leicester win, Elliott and Robertson injuries and more

On top of that, we played further on pretty much in Leicester’s hands. We lost the balls in the wrong moment, when we were too open, so for a long time we never got a foot in this game. Then we had our football moments and we forced then mistakes; scored a disallowed goal and then the two own goals happened. I think especially the second goal is brilliantly done – unlucky that it hits the post and even more unlucky for Leicester obviously that it is an own goal.

2-1 half-time, we knew we have to improve and we did. Line was higher, more aggressive in the challenges, more connected. But still, they had their moments, they played a really good game, credit to Leicester. There’s no coincidence they obviously have quite a decent away record and you can see why. But we had massive chances in the second half where we could have finished the game off – didn’t use them and so that’s pretty much the story of the game. When it’s only 2-1 against a good opponent then you have to fight through. That’s what we did and I’m pleased with that, but of course we have to play better.

On Trent Alexander-Arnold’s defensive display…

Really good, and not the first time. It was good, to be honest. It was really good, very helpful and very important in these moments. Very, very helpful. I think everybody knows how good Harvey Barnes is in these moments and Trent did exceptionally well. We had a few good performances, really good performances but the majority were not on top of their game, let me say it like this, and that’s why this can happen.

I’m getting closer to I think 1,000 games in the job and I saw these games unfortunately pretty often, so that can happen and then it’s very special when you can win them because these are the games that decide about getting where you want to be or not. That’s why it’s so important we could bring it over the line tonight. That’s what we did.

Now we have just two days and we don’t know exactly who can go again and stuff like this. But Brentford have the same situation. They are in a really good moment, I think. I saw big parts of the Tottenham game, a lot of things were really good. Didn’t see obviously yet anything from the West Ham game but will watch it as well. I have no information about that yet. And we had our problems then with the way they play, so we have to make sure we are ready for that. That’s all I’m concerned about in the moment.

Flight tracker: Southwest Airlines flights canceled at Midway leaving thousands of travelers stranded due to Winter Storm Elliott

CHICAGO (WLS) — Holiday travelers continue to deal with flight delays and cancellations from a nearly week-long winter storm, especially those flying Southwest Airlines.

What can I do if my flight is canceled, delayed? How to prepare for likely 2022 holiday travel mess

Southwest had canceled an unprecedented 2,601 flights nationwide, or 64% of all their Monday flights, ABC News reported. Phone lines have crashed due to the sheer volume of calls.

Luggage has continued to pile up at Midway’s baggage claim, where hundreds of bags form a sea of luggage as far as the eye can see. But few are there to retrieve them. Bags are flying without their owners, and have been for days.

“Guess I should have just had a backpack ’cause now they’re telling me the flight got canceled because they said there’s not enough help, not enough stewardesses to manage a full flight. Now we’re trying to recover our luggage but they’re saying our luggage is going to the destination, to Raleigh Durham without us,” said John Ruh, whose flight was canceled.

“I left New Orleans two and a half days ago. Cancelled. Delayed. Cancelled. Delayed. Cancelled,” said Carolyn Irving, who was trying to find her bags. “Hopefully I can find my luggage because medication is in it. Gifts are in it. But you call, nobody’s picking up.”

Unlike other airlines, Southwest often flies point to point. Right now their planes are scattered in all the wrong places after last weeks’ winter storm, which impacted not just their Midway hub but Denver as well.

Southwest captain and union president Casey Murray told ABC News the situation was “catastrophic.”

“It’s been a failure at every level at Southwest. Our pilots, our front line employees have worked under enormous stress to try to get our passengers from A to B, but we were dealt a really bad hand as far as Southwest is concerned,” Murray said.

The flight attendant union also released a statement, saying in part, “Southwest Airlines has failed its employees once again, the result of years of refusal to modernize operations, notes TWU Local 556, the union of Southwest Airlines flight attendants. And this time, it’s on Christmas.”

Southwest issued a statement addressing the situation, writing in part, “We are still experiencing disruptions across our network as a result of Winter Storm Elliott’s lingering effects on the totality of our operation. With the weather now considerably more favorable, we continue work to stabilize and improve our operation.

“We are re-accommodating as many Customers as possible, based on available space, whose itineraries have been disrupted. Those whose flights have been canceled may request a full refund or receive a flight credit, which does not expire.”

But according to one industry expert, passengers today may be entitled to more than that.

“Make sure you save those receipts because you’re going to want to submit those to Southwest after the fact to see about getting your hotel, your meal, your taxi ride reimbursed, especially because it seems as though this is not a wave of cancellations that is weather-related the way it was earlier in the week,” said Scott Kelly of Scott’s Cheap Flights.

The lines to check your bag Monday morning were so long, Menda Speckels and her kids missed their flight back to Texas.

“We got here at 3:30 for a 5:20 flight. And the lines were just insane,” she said.

It’s been a nightmare for folks traveling over the Christmas holiday.

Hundreds of flights canceled each day out of O’Hare and Midway. Thousands, canceled or delayed nationwide.

And Monday is sadly no different.

“Got stuck here,” Ayana Ortiz said. “Flight got canceled so now we’re just hanging around waiting to see if they will re-book us.”

Ortiz woke up early, got here at 3:45 a.m. and found out their flight was cancelled.

“A little frustrating,” she said. “We chose the early flight in order to get back sooner and get in bed. But it didn’t turn out that way.”

Perhaps in worst shape, though, is Anna Kang. She’s been trying to fly to San Diego since Sunday afternoon out of O’Hare.

“Two flights got canceled,” she said. “I waited in line for about an hour and a half to book another flight at the other airport. So I went from O’Hare to Midway.”

Only to have her flight cancelled here at Midway Sunday night, too.

“We found that out at about 1 o’clock this morning,” Kang said. “So I’ve been up all night since yesterday. Here? Here. I’ve been here since yesterday around 8 p.m. last night.”

Hit particularly hard was Southwest Airlines. That’s evident at Midway, with Southwest seeing the longest lines at ticketing.

Frustrated passengers are now resorting to Plan B.

“So now we’re driving back to Austin,” Speckels said. “Seventeen hours. I was able to find a rental car. There was not many, but I was able to find one. So we’re going to start back here in a minute I guess. Because there were just no flights? No. None at all.”

The Chicago Department of Aviation released a statement saying, “At the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA), the highest priority is to create a safe, secure and efficient environment for passengers and employees.

“With the support of Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot and CDA Commissioner Jamie L.Rhee, CDA staff, and partners at the airlines and the FAA, Chicago’s airports support increased passenger volume over the holiday travel period.

“Passengers should check flight status with their airline in advance of coming to the airports.”

Hochul declares state of emergency in New York ahead of Winter Storm Elliott

Most of New York is going to have a dreary Christmas weekend.

Gov. Kathy Hochul on Thursday declared a state of emergency for the entirety of New York in preparation for the massive storm that’s forecast to wallop the northeast over the holiday weekend.

The measure will go into effect at 6 a.m. Friday when Winter Storm Elliott — dubbed a “once-in-a-generation” weather event by the National Weather Service — is expected to bear down on the area.

“With Mother Nature throwing everything she has at us this weekend, I encourage New Yorkers who are considering traveling for the holidays to do so before Friday or after Sunday to stay safe,” Hochul said in a statement.

A so-called bomb cyclone, when atmospheric pressure drops very quickly in a strong storm, was predicted to develop late Thursday night into Friday near the Great Lakes.

Blizzard warnings, coastal flood warnings, high wind warnings, wind chill warnings and winter storm warnings are all in effect throughout New York.

The state is placing a full commercial vehicle ban on I-90 from Rochester to the Pennsylvania Border, a roughly 135-mile stretch. Several roads in Erie County, which expects to get hit with 3 feet of snow Monday, will also be closed.

More than 5,000 flights have already been canceled ahead of the winter storm expected to bring blizzard conditions and record-setting temperature drops.

Parts of upstate New York will be slammed with snow while areas closer to the coast, including New York City, will face a drenching rain for most of Friday, forecasters said.

From Friday to Saturday, winds will likely reach up to 60 miles per hour as temperatures quickly plummet by up to 35 degrees in some regions, causing freezing, below-zero wind chills and icy road conditions.

“This is not like a snow day when you were a kid,” President Joe Biden said Thursday. “This is serious stuff.”

Other states have already felt the effects of the moving storm.

In Wyoming, highway patrol troopers responded to over 100 wrecks within 12 hours during a massive whiteout that the agency compared to Antarctic conditions.

One person died in Kansas City, Missouri after their car overturned into an icy creek, police said.

Denver hit its lowest temperatures in 32 years on Thursday, morning when the temperature dropped to minus 24.

Kyler Murray, Ezekiel Elliott both inactive

Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is looking for a win in his emotional return to Green Bay. (Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports)

The NFL’s Week 10 late game slate is rife with notable inactives.

Ezekiel Elliott won’t play as the Dallas Cowboys visit the Green Bay Packers, while neither Kyler Murray nor Matthew Stafford will start for the Arizona Cardinals or Los Angeles Rams, respectively, in their NFC West clash.

The big storyline at Lambeau Field will be Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy returning with his new team after 13 seasons as Packers head coach, leading them to a Super Bowl title along with Aaron Rodgers in the 2010 season.
