Biggest immediate question for advancing and eliminated playoff teams

Have the Chiefs fixed their special teams units?

No playoff team came into the postseason with more questions about the kicking game than Kansas City. Harrison Butker made 90.1 percent of his career field goal attempts prior to this season. He’s only connected on 75 percent this season (18 of 24), with three missed extra points part of the problem, too. The issue has become so controversial in Kansas City that former punter/holder Dustin Colquitt, who spent 15 seasons with the Chiefs (2005-2019), took to social media and local radio to criticize current punter/holder Tommy Townsend for his holding technique. The return game also has been sketchy at times, as rookie Skyy Moore lost the punt return job after muffing three punts, and Kadarius Toney has fumbled on a punt return as well. The Chiefs have long had one of the best special teams coaches in the league in Dave Toub. If he hasn’t resolved these issues yet, it wouldn’t be surprising to see a kicking game gaffe ruin Kansas City’s Super Bowl dreams.

Jets eliminated from playoff contention — ‘It’s gut-wrenching’

SEATTLE — New York Jets quarterback Mike White sat motionless at his locker for several minutes, staring down at play sheets at his feet. Eventually, he reached down, picked up the papers and methodically tore them into tiny pieces — a metaphor for the Jets’ once-promising season.

Their 23-6 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday at Lumen Field was the Jets’ fifth straight defeat, which eliminated them from playoff contention to culminate an epic collapse. It extended their postseason drought to 12 straight years, the longest active streak in the NFL and now the longest such slump in franchise history. It also clinched their seventh consecutive losing season.

“It stings,” White said. “It’s tough. It’s gut-wrenching. It’s all of the above. You can use any adjective you want to use to describe it.”

The Jets were 7-4 after a 31-10 rout of the Chicago Bears on Nov. 27, seemingly headed toward a slump-busting playoff appearance. Undermined by a cold offense and quarterback instability, they now are in the midst of perhaps the worst late-season nose dive in team history. The last time they lost this many in a row after the 10th game was 1996, their infamous 1-15 season.

“No one is hurting more than the people in the locker room, especially me,” coach Robert Saleh said. “At the same time, I know it’s hard to see light at the end of the tunnel, but there are a lot of really cool things to look at for this season. But right now it stings big time.”

Coming off a 4-13 record in Saleh’s first season, the Jets (7-9) weren’t expected to be strong playoff contenders in 2022, but they became one of the biggest surprises with their fast start. Expectations were raised — and everything fell apart.

“We feel s—ty as players,” tight end Tyler Conklin said. “No one is happy about it. I feel for the fans, I feel for everybody. We wanted this, too, and we just didn’t play well enough and it hurts. It sucks. You know you’re not going to get an opportunity to change that until next season, which makes it even s—tier.”

Saleh said he will “look at everything, all the way from the top down, starting with me, obviously.” The offense will get the most scrutiny. It failed to score a touchdown for the second straight game; the Jets have averaged only 12 points per game during the five-game losing streak.

“It’s shocking,” White said of the slump — eight quarters without a touchdown.

The Jets had hoped White’s return to the lineup would provide the spark needed to win the final two games and perhaps sneak into the playoffs. A pair of wins, coupled with one loss by the New England Patriots, would have resulted in a wild-card berth. But, after missing two games because of fractured ribs, White was rusty and looked uncomfortable under pressure Sunday.

White, in his fourth start since replacing the benched Zach Wilson, completed only 23 of 46 passes for 240 yards and two interceptions. He was sacked four times and went 3-for-15 with an interception under duress, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.

He didn’t deny that his ribs might have been a factor in his performance.

“I was cleared to play by the doctors,” he said. “The guys in that locker room deserve a certain standard. I knew what I was signing up for. I was cleared by the doctors, I practiced all week. Basically, what I’m saying is, there’s a standard those guys deserve. I didn’t live up to that standard today.”

Different quarterback, same result.

In the past four games — two with Wilson, two with White — the Jets have produced 12, 17, three and six points. It shines a light on offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur, whose offense has topped 30 points only five times in 33 games. Conklin said they were “flat” at times Sunday.

“We feel like we blew the season,” said rookie wide receiver Garrett Wilson, speaking of the team in general. “We wanted a chance at the playoffs. I’m pretty sure this [loss] means we’re not going. At the end of the day, that’s what we wanted to do — and have a chance to prove ourselves beyond that. We didn’t get there, so we don’t feel good about it at all.”

The Jets were out of the game from the start, falling behind 17-3, after the defense allowed three consecutive scoring drives. After that, they never really threatened, as LaFleur got away from the ground game and White continued to misfire. He was 17-for-40 when targeting receivers not named Conklin.

After a few fortuitous results last weekend, the Jets received an unexpected shot at the playoffs — “a blessing from the football gods,” cornerback D.J. Reed said. But they squandered their second chance.

“We had high expectations all season and we didn’t meet them,” special teams captain Justin Hardee said. “It’s always disappointing when you don’t take that next step and get to the postseason. We’ll have a bad taste in our mouth for a long time.”

Commanders are eliminated, and Carson Wentz faces an uncertain NFL future

Comment

Late Sunday afternoon, after a humiliating loss that effectively ended the Washington Commanders’ season, a few of the fans who stayed spied quarterback Carson Wentz running off the field. They sprinted down the steps of the lower bowl at FedEx Field to join a small crowd that had gathered above the tunnel to the locker room. They waited until Wentz got close.

Wentz didn’t look up. His expression didn’t change. But it was impossible for him not to have heard the crowd’s frustration in the 24-10 loss to the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. On the Commanders’ first drive of the day, Wentz threw an interception on his second throw, and fans broke into a chant for backup Taylor Heinicke. They did it at least four more times on the afternoon.

Commanders’ playoff hopes end following an ugly loss to the Browns

“It’s part of football,” Wentz said. “I’ve seen a lot in my seven years and experienced a lot. I get it. I didn’t have my best day today. I wish it would have [gone] differently. I feel like I let some of my teammates down there early in the game and put us in a hole a little bit. But that’s part of football.”

Did the chants affect him?

“[I] try not to [let them],” he said.

By many measures, this was Washington’s worst offensive performance of the season besides the 24-8 drubbing at Dallas in Week 4. It was a disastrous end to the bet Coach Ron Rivera made after a brief, promising showing by Wentz in last week’s loss at San Francisco. Against the Browns, the quarterback finished 16-for-28 passing (57.1 percent) for 143 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions. He also took three sacks, all of which took 2.4 seconds or longer, according to the website TruMedia.

“I thought he had his moments,” Rivera said, pointing out the team put together a 21-play, 96-yard drive before halftime to score its only touchdown. He noted that Wentz needed to throw the ball earlier on his first interception and he needed more zip on the second.

“He held the ball a couple times when he probably could have gotten it out and probably should have gotten it out,” Rivera added. “We’ve just got to continue to work on that.”

In the opposing locker room, the Browns seemed unsurprised by Wentz’s struggles. Several defenders, including end Jadeveon Clowney and linebacker Reggie Ragland, said they preached all week that stopping the run on first and second down would force Wentz to throw on third and long, a situation in which he struggles.

Cleveland, which has one of the NFL’s worst run defenses, mostly executed the plan. Washington struggled to be better than average running the ball on early downs, and even though it faced plenty of manageable third downs — the average distance to convert was 6.1 yards, its fifth shortest of the year — the Browns’ pass rush battered Wentz and seemed to affect his decision-making.

“Once we get him rattled in the pocket, it’s over,” Clowney said. “Coming in, we said, ‘If we can get him rattled, we can get some turnovers out of him.’ We knew that.”

Four takeaways from the Commanders’ 24-10 loss to the Browns

“If you know football, you know [Wentz] has a slow release, and you know Heinicke gets the ball out fast,” Ragland said. “Some of the guys I know on the team” — Ragland played college football at Alabama with Commanders wide receiver Cam Sims and defensive tackle Jonathan Allen — “they would’ve preferred Heinicke because they know he gets the ball out. You can see it on film, too, though. They play different with each quarterback.”

Browns defensive end Myles Garrett said that Wentz, who normally holds on to the ball too long, seemed to be doing so more Sunday because it was a part of the game plan. He pointed out the Commanders were in formations meant to take deep shots and sometimes used two players to chip defenders, which slowed them getting out into their routes and limited Wentz’s check-down options.

“They wanted to get some plays down the field and some long-developing plays,” Garrett said. “I don’t think it was really [Wentz] holding it as much as he’s waiting for everything to develop in front of him.”

In the Commanders’ locker room, teammates defended Wentz. Wide receiver Terry McLaurin acknowledged it was “probably tough” for Wentz to hear chants for Heinicke, and tight end Logan Thomas said he didn’t feel as if he needed to say anything to Wentz because, as a former quarterback, he knew Wentz was plenty hard on himself.

“We can’t really blame [Wentz] for the performance,” running back Brian Robinson Jr. said. “We just didn’t have the energy we needed. … Overall, it was kind of dull. I don’t know where the energy came from, but it was definitely in the air, and you could feel it. I feel like that kind of affected his performance.”

Buckner: Ron Rivera returned to his offseason gamble. It cost his team the postseason.

The final drive — with an overthrow, a drop and two false start penalties — encapsulated the sloppiness of the Commanders’ offense. When the clock expired, Wentz walked through the Browns’ defense, shaking hands. He congratulated Garrett and Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson before taking a knee at midfield. Wentz, defensive end Chase Young, linebacker David Mayo and two Browns staffers knelt and held hands in a prayer circle.

No one talked about anything related to the game. They prayed for players’ health and for their families, “the truly important stuff in life,” Mayo said. The moment could’ve been Wentz’s last on the field as the Commanders’ starter.

All afternoon, it was difficult to ignore the echoes of Wentz’s past. Last season, needing a win to get into the playoffs, Wentz and the Indianapolis Colts collapsed in a 26-11 loss to the lowly Jacksonville Jaguars. This year, against another eliminated team, Wentz again delivered one of his worst performances.

“I wish the result was different. I wish we came out of here with a win,” he said. “But I don’t think about [last year]. It’s a completely new situation, new place, new everything — and I just wish it would have went different.”

After about a minute, Wentz rose from the prayer circle, scratched his beard and ran toward the tunnel — toward boos and an uncertain future.

USA out of World Cup: Live updates as USMNT eliminated by Netherlands in FIFA World Cup 2022 round of 16

The United States men’s national team were eliminated by the Netherlands in the round of 16 of the 2022 FIFA World Cup on Saturday. First-half goals by Memphis Depay and Daley Blind did Gregg Berhalter’s squad in as the Americans leave Qatar with a 3-1 defeat to the Dutch following a respectable group-stage campaign. The Netherlands will face the winner of Argentina and Australia in the quarterfinals on Friday.

This was a game that showed how much the USMNT still need to grow as they were exposed to Dutch counters. This was a U.S. team that did not concede a goal on open play during the group stage heading into Saturday. Denzel Dumfries dominated the wing with two assists and a goal to his name.

The Americans were without Josh Sargent, who did not dress due to an ankle injury, and they missed his presence with the lack movement and space in attack. From being too quick in their passing plays to not tracking back on Dutch counters, the United States were lulled into playing the game that Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal prepared for.

On the Dutch opening goal, Coady Gakpo made space for Depay to blow past the United States midfield to finish the chance created by Dumfries. Again before the half, a fullback Sergino Dest was caught flat-footed for Blind to finish in a fullback to fullback goal that drove home the Dutch style of play. Changes came at halftime with Gio Reyna entering for Jesus Ferreira but that wasn’t enough to get back into the game. Haji Wright pulled one back from a Netherlands collapse before Dumfries capped his excellent game with an 81st minute goal to put things out of sight.

CBS Sports will continue to update this breaking news story as necessary.
