Warriors star Stephen Curry ejected after throwing mouthguard over Jordan Poole shot vs. Grizzlies

Stephen Curry wanted the shot late on Wednesday night.

After seeing teammate Jordan Poole take it, and miss it, instead of passing it to him on the logo at Chase Center late in their 122-120 win over the Memphis Grizzlies, Curry lost it a bit.

The Golden State Warriors star took out his mouthguard and threw it down the court out of frustration as he was running back on defense, which led to a quick ejection.

While Curry’s reaction wasn’t toward the officials, it didn’t matter. They hit him with a technical foul and threw him out on the spot. He finished with 34 points and shot 10-of-19 from the field in 35 minutes.

Poole didn’t seem to realize why Curry was so upset after the game, either.

“I didn’t see what happened at the time,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said, via NBC Sports. “When the ref called it, I was confused. Then the coach told me he threw the mouthpiece down out of anger … He knows he can’t make that mistake again.”

The ejection came with the Warriors holding a 2-point lead and only 73 seconds left in the game.

Though Curry didn’t get to see it in person, Poole more than made up for his missed shot in the end. Poole sank a heavily contested layup on an inbound pass with just one second left to give the Warriors the 2-point win.

Poole finished with 21 points, seven assists and five rebounds.

While things were tense on the floor, the two seemed more than fine in the tunnel after the win.

Ja Morant led Memphis with 29 points and 13 assists in the loss while shooting 10-of-20 from the field. Desmond Bane added 20 points, and Brandon Clarke finished with 19 points and eight rebounds. The Grizzlies have now lost four straight on the heels of an impressive 11-game win streak.

Outside of Curry and Poole, Klay Thompson added 24 points for the Warriors. Jonathan Kuminga was their only other player to hit double digits with 13 points. The win lifted Golden State to 24-24 on the season, and was its fourth win in seven games.

Chargers safety Derwin James Jr. reportedly won’t be suspended after he was ejected for a brutal hit on Colts WR that left both in concussion protocol

It didn’t take long before everyone knew that Los Angeles Chargers safety Derwin James Jr. might be ejected for a vicious hit on Indianapolis Colts receiver Ashton Dulin.

James came in with the crown of his helmet and hit Dulin in the head and neck area after Dulin made a short catch. The hit sounded like something exploded on the field, and the crowd immediately reacted. Dulin was down for a few moments.

“We’ve watched a lot of football, I don’t know if I’ve seen a hit quite like that,” ESPN analyst Troy Aikman said.

James got a 15-yard penalty and was disqualified for the hit. That type of hit wasn’t outlawed decades ago, but it was shocking to see it in the current environment. Aikman spoke about it for a while after James was ejected.

“That was as big of a collision as I’ve seen in a long, long time,” Aikman said.

Dulin went back to the locker room shortly after the hit and was later ruled out with a concussion. Head coach Brandon Staley said after the Chargers’ win that James had entered concussion protocol. Dulin was defenseless on the play and James hit him in the head and neck with the crown of his helmet — it was practically a textbook example of what the NFL is trying to erase from the game.

While James reportedly won’t be suspended for his hit on Dulin, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, he could face a fine from the NFL for his aggressiveness. The standard fine for James’ hit could be as high as $21,218 for using his helmet, according to the NFL and NFL Players Association. A hit on a defenseless player comes with a slightly smaller fine of $15,914.

James is a great player, but his aggressiveness cost the Chargers on Monday night. It will probably cost him a big fine as well.

Luka Doncic, Jason Kidd ejected as Mavericks slip below .500 in loss to Timberwolves

USATSI

The Dallas Mavericks have had perhaps the most frustrating season of any team in the Western Conference this season, and things just went from bad to worse on Monday in a loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves. That defeat, their 16th of the season, dropped the Mavericks below .500, but it wasn’t just the loss itself that will bother Dallas fans. It was the way in which it came.

With the Mavericks trailing in the third quarter, Luka Doncic tried to draw a foul by initiating contact with defender Jaden McDaniels before a shot. He didn’t get the whistle. When Doncic complained, he was quickly issued two technical fouls and ejected. Coach Jason Kidd came to his defense, and he too was ejected.

Doncic has been noticeably frustrated with officials all season, but the numbers suggest he’s getting plenty of calls. He’s averaging a career-high 10.3 free throw attempts per game this season. Of course, he also has a career-high 38 percent usage rate, but even once that is adjusted for, his 45.3 percent free throw rate is also a career-best. By that measure, Doncic is getting more calls than ever.

He needs them, because the team Dallas has put around him is otherwise incapable of generating offense. The absence of Jalen Brunson, who is thriving in New York, has put an enormous burden on Doncic’s shoulders. Doncic is feeling that burden, and he let his frustration get the better of him on Monday. With the Mavericks now tied for 10th in the Western Conference, it’s hard to blame him.
