Bellator 289 results and highlights: Patchy Mix chokes Magomedov out cold, Stots edges out Sabatello

We’ve got a really interesting Bellator card on tap tonight. Bellator 289 goes live from Uncaseville, CT (of course) and has two tournament semi-finals and a title fight on tap.

The bantamweight grand prix semi-finals has produced two very exciting match-ups. Raufeon Stots vs. Danny Sabatello and Magomed Magomedov vs. Patchy Mix. Stots vs. Sabatallo serves as the main event, with Stots’ interim Bellator bantamweight title on the line.

Stots has looked sensational against Bellator competition. His only pro loss was to Merab Dvalishvili back in 2017 in the Ring of Combat promotion. Sabatello won his fight on the Contender Series but didn’t do enough to get the UFC contract. Since then he’s invented an ‘Italian Gangster’ character and has used that to add some buzz to his 13-1 pro record.

The co-main event has Liz Carmouche defending the Bellator flyweight title versus Juliana Velasquez. Carmouche TKO’d Velasquez to win the title in her last bout. Velasquez won the title back in 2020, defeating Carmouche’s friend and training partner Ilima-Lei Macfarlane.

You can watch the main card for this event on Showtime starting at 9 p.m. ET. The prelims are free on YouTube, starting at 5:30 p.m. ET. Many viewers outside the US (including those in Canada) can watch the main event live on YouTube, too. Those streams are available below.

Full results:

Main card (9 p.m. ET on Showtime):

Bellator interim bantamweight championship/bantamweight grand prix semi-final: Raufeon Stots (c) def. Danny Sabatello by split decision.

Bellator flyweight championship: Liz Carmouche def. Juliana Velasquez by submission (armbar), round 2 (4:24).

Bantamweight grand prix semi-final: Patchy Mix def. Magomed Magomedov by submission (guillotine), round 2 (2:39).

Middleweight: Dalton Rosta def. Anthony Adams by unanimous decision.

Prelim card (5:30 p.m. ET on YouTube):

Flyweight: Ilara Joanne def. Denise Kielholtz by split decision.

Welterweight: Jaleel Willis def. Kyle Crutchmer by unanimous decision.

Featherweight: Cris Lencioni def. Cody Law by split decision.

Middleweight: Christian Echols def. Patrick Downey by KO, round 1 (2:27)

Featherweight: Kai Kamaka III def. Kevin Boehm by TKO, round 3 (2:23)

Welterweight: Michael Lombardo def. Mark Lemminger by TKO, round 1 (4:23)

EU edges closer to $60-per-barrel Russian oil price cap

BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union was edging closer to setting a $60-per-barrel price cap on Russian oil — a highly anticipated and complex political and economic maneuver designed to keep Russia’s supplies flowing into global markets while clamping down on President Vladimir Putin’s ability to fund his war in Ukraine.

EU nations sought to push the cap across the finish line after Poland held out to get as low a figure as possible, diplomats said Thursday. “Still waiting for white smoke from Warsaw,” said an EU diplomat, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the talks were still ongoing.

The latest offer, confirmed by 3 EU diplomats, comes ahead of a deadline to set the price for discounted oil by Monday, when a European embargo on seaborne Russian crude and a ban on shipping insurance for those supplies take effect. The diplomats also spoke on condition of anonymity because the legal process was still not completed.

The $60 figure would mean a cap near the current price of Russia’s crude, which fell this week below $60 per barrel, and is meant to prevent a sudden loss of Russian oil to the world following the new Western sanctions. It is a big discount to international benchmark Brent, which traded at about $87 per barrel Thursday, but could be high enough for Moscow to keep selling even while rejecting the idea of a cap.

When the final number is in place, a new buyer’s cartel — which is expected to be made up of formal and informal members — will be born. Western allies in the Group of Seven industrial powers led the price cap effort and still need to approve the figure.

One coalition official, who was not authorized to comment publicly and spoke on the condition of anonymity, expressed optimism that an agreement could be reached as early as Friday, but cautioned the negotiations would potentially roll into the weekend or perhaps even Monday.

The official added that putting the price cap in place will help end the war faster. On the flipside, the official said failure to put it in place would be “a win for Russia.”

Oil is the Kremlin’s main pillar of financial revenue and has kept the Russian economy afloat so far despite export bans, sanctions and the freezing of central bank assets that began with the February invasion. Russia exports roughly 5 million barrels of oil per day.

The risks of the price cap’s failure are immense to the global oil supply. If it fails or Russia retaliates by stopping the export of oil, energy prices worldwide could skyrocket. Putin has said he would not sell oil under a price cap and would retaliate against nations that implement the measure.

U.S. and European consumers could feel the ramifications in more spikes to gasoline prices, and people in developing countries could face greater levels of food insecurity.

With the EU and U.K. banning insurance for Russian oil shipments, the price ceiling allows companies to keep insuring tankers headed for non-EU countries as long as the oil is priced at or under the cap. That would avoid a price spike from the loss of supplies from the world’s No. 2 oil producer and put a ceiling on Russia’s oil income near current levels.

The Treasury Department has released guidance meant to help firms and maritime insurers understand how to abide by the price ceiling, saying the price cap could fluctuate depending on market conditions.

Robin Brooks, chief economist at the Institute of International Finance in Washington, said the cap should have been implemented earlier this year, when oil was hovering around $120 per barrel.

“Since then, obviously oil prices have fallen and global recession is a real thing,” he said. “The reality is that it is unlikely to be binding given where oil prices are now.”

Critics of the price cap measure, including former Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, have called the plan “ridiculous.”

Mnuchin told CNBC during a panel in November at the Milken Institute’s Middle East and Africa Summit that the price cap was “not only not feasible, I think it’s the most ridiculous idea I’ve ever heard.”

Rachel Ziemba, an adjunct senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security, said that while a worst-case scenario envisions Russia cutting off the global supply of its oil, “the Saudis and Emiratis would boost production.”

“Russia has made is clear the countries that abide by the cap won’t receive their oil and that could result in cuts to natural gas exports as well,” she said. “This will be an interesting few weeks and few months.”

No. 21 Oregon State edges No. 9 Oregon, clearing way for USC vs. Utah rematch in Pac-12 Championship Game

USATSI

No. 9 Oregon squandered a trip to the Pac-12 Championship Game after losing 38-34 to rival No. 21 Oregon State as the Beavers pulled off a miraculous comeback. No. 14 Utah, with its 63-21 win over Colorado coupled with No. 13 Washington’s Apple Cup victory, jumped past the Ducks thanks to conference tiebreaker rules and will play No. 6 USC in Las Vegas. The title game will serve as a rematch of a 43-42 victory for the Utes on Oct. 15.

The Ducks could have clinched a title game berth with a win over their rival, but Washington’s win over Washington State bumped the Huskies into a three-way tie with the Ducks and Utes. The tiebreaker rules gave Utah the three-way advantage due to a better strength of schedule. The Ducks will have a long offseason to think about their loss after giving up a massive lead.

Oregon State trailed 31-10 in the third quarter but finished the game on a 28-3 run down the stretch to beat its rival for just the third time since 2008. The Beavers’ passing game struggled, but a dominant running performance helped make up the gap. Running back Damien Martinez, one of the best freshmen players in America, toted the ball 15 times for 103 yards to lead a Beavers rushing effort that posted 268 yards and five touchdowns. Freshman quarterback Ben Gulbranson completed just six passes and threw two interceptions in the win.

Oregon quarterback Bo Nix had another strong game with 327 yards passing and two touchdowns, but the Ducks failed to convert in key situations. The Ducks settled for a field goal at the beginning of the fourth quarter at the Oregon State 6-yard line and muffed a punt at the 2-yard line to set up another Beavers score. Nix made a wrong decision on a fourth-and-1 zone read and was stopped for a turnover on downs.

Nix had one last chance to throw a game-winner into the end zone, but his pass on fourth-and-goal from the 3-yard line fell harmlessly into the end zone. Oregon State was able to get a first down and run out the clock.

The win clinches a 9-3 season for Oregon State, which is the best since former coach Mike Riley led the Beavers to a 9-4 campaign in 2012. If Oregon State can win a bowl game, the Beavers could put together a 10-win campaign for the first time since 2006.

The Pac-12 Championship Game features No. 6 USC facing off against No. 14 Utah in Las Vegas at 8 p.m. ET on Friday. With a win, the Trojans can likely earn their first trip to the College Football Playoff. The Utes will try to win their second consecutive conference championship after entering the season as betting favorites.

FP1 report and highlights from the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix: FP1: Perez edges out Leclerc and Verstappen in ultra-close first practice at Interlagos as qualifying nears

Sergio Perez narrowly set the pace during Friday’s first practice session for the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, ahead of Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc and Red Bull team mate Max Verstappen, as the third and final F1 Sprint weekend of the season got under way.

Given the Sprint format, FP1 took on greater importance than the usual Friday programme, with only 60 minutes available for teams to understand and fine-tune their cars ahead of qualifying at the technical Interlagos circuit.

After drivers spent the early stages gathering data on the hard and medium tyre compounds – Verstappen leading with a hard-shod time of 1m 13.575s – the first sets of softs appeared close to the halfway mark, leading to a flurry of improvements.

Perez triggered the move to the red-marked rubber, working his way down to a 1m 11.853s, with Verstappen initially slotting into P2, 0.008s back, as the reigning double world champion reported over the radio that his RB18 “doesn’t turn”.

In the closing minutes of the session, Leclerc would pip the struggling Verstappen by 0.004s to split the Red Bulls, after Ferrari made a late switch to the soft tyres – Carlos Sainz taking fourth, just under two-tenths back.

Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell were both within a whisker of Sainz in P5 and P6 respectively, despite Hamilton stating that it “feels like the rear is just floating around” and locking up at the start of his soft tyre run.

Sebastian Vettel put his Aston Martin seventh as his F1 retirement draws ever closer, as Haas driver Mick Schumacher, the Alfa Romeo of Valtteri Bottas and AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly rounded out the top 10 positions.

Alpine pair Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon made a low-key start to the weekend in respective P11 and P13 spots – neither Alpine nor rivals McLaren running soft tyres in the session – sandwiching Williams man Alex Albon, with the other Aston Martin of Lance Stroll 14th after reporting technical issues.

Drivers and teams ran packed FP1 programmes to prepare for qualifying

Having been unwell on Thursday, Lando Norris made it out on track to lead McLaren’s charge in P15, followed by the remaining Haas and Williams machines of Kevin Magnussen and Nicholas Latifi.

Zhou Guanyu (Alfa Romeo), Yuki Tsunoda (AlphaTauri) and Daniel Ricciardo (McLaren) completed the field, which was covered by 1.5 seconds around the 4.309km venue.

In an otherwise quiet session, a slow-moving Norris at the exit of the Senna Esses drew the ire of Sainz, with Stroll frustrating Leclerc in another traffic-related incident on the run down to Juncao.

After FP1, attention immediately turns to qualifying in Sao Paulo, which is scheduled to get under way at 1600 local time. Visit the RACE HUB for more information.
