Yeah, yeah, you don’t need to charge a real book or update a book’s software. But now, our trusty Kindles remind us that they’re actually Wi-Fi connected, electronic devices capable of change as Amazon unveils a rare, significant design upgrade for the first time in years.
To simplify navigation, the new look adds a two-tab bar to the bottom of the home screen, letting users easily toggle between the “home” and “library” screens. To access frequently used features, Kindle introduced an arrow on the top of the screen. When tapped, it reveals buttons to access airplane mode, Bluetooth, dark mode, sync or the rest of the settings menu. There’s also a brightness slider.

Amazon notified customers about the update on Friday and says it will roll out in the coming weeks, but many users with eligible devices — Kindle (8th Gen and above), Kindle Paperwhite (7th Gen and above) and Kindle Oasis — have already downloaded the upgrade. If you’re not sure what kind of Kindle you have, you can check here, but if your Kindle is from 2015 or later, you’re probably eligible. If your Kindle is connected to Wi-Fi, the update will install automatically, but you can manually download it here.
The company says it will continue to improve the home and library screens later this year — users will be able to swipe left on the home page to see recently read books from their library. Then, the library screen will introduce new filter and sort menus, a new collection view and an interactive scroll bar.

This is the biggest design update that Kindle has released since around 2016 — but if you noticed that the user interface felt outdated while you wrapped up your summer reading, now you know that Amazon noticed too.
Xbox is rolling out a controller firmware update to Insiders, with the biggest new feature being the introduction of Bluetooth Low Energy for older controllers. That will make it easier to pair with and switch from Xbox One consoles to different systems including Windows 10, iOS 15 and Android devices, the company announced. Microsoft has also introduced DLI (Dynamic Latency Input) to reduce console input latency on older controllers.
Most of Microsoft’s existing Xbox One controllers, including the latest low-latency Xbox Series X model, use Bluetooth for PCs or smartphones and the Xbox Wireless protocol for Xbox consoles. With the new firmware, older controllers will remember your phone or PC and let you quickly switch over to them from a console, much as the latest Xbox Series X models can. To do that, you’ll simply need to double tap the “pair” button.
Another key update is DLI, designed to cut the input latency on controllers paired with the latest Xbox Series X/S consoles. The new firmware means that older controllers will react as quickly as the latest models that ship with consoles, making gaming more responsive. “We believe it’s important to maintain backward compatibility with Xbox accessories people already have in their collection and to ensure we deliver the best gaming experience no matter how you choose to play,” the Xbox team wrote in a blog post.
Microsoft is testing this feature with Alpha Skip-Ahead and Alpha Xbox Insiders today, but it should come to all users in the coming months.

Stanford researchers have engineered a new miniature CRISPR system that should be easier to deliver into human cells.
Bioengineers have repurposed a “non-working” CRISPR system to make a smaller version of the genome engineering tool. Its diminutive size should make it easier to deliver into human cells, tissues, and the body for gene therapy.

Amino acids are a set of organic compounds used to build proteins. There are about 500 naturally occurring known amino acids, though only 20 appear in the genetic code. Proteins consist of one or more chains of amino acids called polypeptides. The sequence of the amino acid chain causes the polypeptide to fold into a shape that is biologically active. The amino acid sequences of proteins are encoded in the genes. Nine proteinogenic amino acids are called “essential” for humans because they cannot be produced from other compounds by the human body and so must be taken in as food.

The researchers confirmed in experiments that CasMINI could delete, activate and edit genetic code just like its beefier counterparts. Its smaller size means it should be easier to deliver into human cells and the human body, making it a potential tool for treating diverse ailments, including eye disease, organ degeneration and genetic diseases generally.
Persistent effort
To make the system as small as possible, the researchers decided to start with the CRISPR protein Cas12f (also known as Cas14), because it contains only about 400 to 700 amino acids. However, like other CRISPR proteins, Cas12f naturally originates from Archaea – single-celled organisms – which means it is not well-suited to mammalian cells, let alone human cells or bodies. Only a few CRISPR proteins are known to work in mammalian cells without modification. Unfortunately, CAS12f is not one of them. This makes it an enticing challenge for bioengineers like Qi.
“We thought, ‘Okay, millions of years of evolution have not been able to turn this CRISPR system into something that functions in the human body. Can we change that in just one or two years?’” said Qi. “To my knowledge, we have, for the first time, turned a nonworking CRISPR into a working one.”
Indeed, Xiaoshu Xu, a postdoctoral scholar in the Qi lab and lead author of the paper, saw no activity of the natural Cas12f in human cells. Xu and Qi hypothesized that the issue was that human genome DNA is more complicated and less accessible than microbial DNA, making it hard for Cas12f to find its target in cells. By looking at the computationally predicted structure of the Cas12f system, she carefully chose about 40 mutations in the protein that could potentially bypass this limitation and established a pipeline for testing many protein variants at a time. A working variant would, in theory, turn a human cell green by activating green fluorescent protein (GFP) in its genome.
“At first, this system did not work at all for a year,” Xu said. “But after iterations of bioengineering, we saw some engineered proteins start to turn on, like magic. It made us really appreciate the power of synthetic biology and bioengineering.”
The first successful results were modest, but they excited Xu and encouraged her to push forward because it meant the system worked. Over many additional iterations, she was able to further improve the protein’s performance. “We started with seeing only two cells showing a green signal, and now after engineering, almost every cell is green under the microscope,” Xu said.
“At some moment, I had to stop her,” recalled Qi. “I said ‘That’s good for now. You’ve made a pretty good system. We should think about how this molecule can be used for applications.’”

Pokemon Go’s August Community Day will be held across two days rather than one, developer Niantic has announced. The event will take place August 14-15 and will feature Eevee, giving you another chance to get some Shiny Eevee evolutions.
As the featured Pokemon, Eevee will be appearing more frequently in the wild than usual throughout the entire weekend, meaning you’ll also have an increased chance of finding a Shiny. Any Shiny Eevee that you evolve will retain its Shiny coloration, making this a good opportunity to add some Shiny Eevee evolutions to your collection.

Additionally, Niantic is making it easier to get Sylveon. Typically, you need to earn 70 hearts when Eevee is set as your buddy in order to evolve it into Sylveon. For August’s Community Day, however, Niantic is reducing the number of buddy hearts you need to earn to only seven.
Eevee will also learn a different Community Day-exclusive move depending on which form you evolve it into. Any Eevee that you evolve between August 13-16 will automatically know the following attacks:
Vaporeon: Scald
Jolteon: Zap Cannon
Flareon: Superpower
Espeon: Shadow Ball
Umbreon: Psychic
Leafeon: Bullet Seed

As usual, a few bonuses will be live during August’s Community Day as well. First, any Lure Modules and Incense that you use during the event hours will remain active for three hours. Each day of August’s Community Day weekend will run from 11 AM to 5 PM local time. You can read more details about the event on the official Pokemon Go blog.
In the meantime, Niantic has three Ultra Unlock events lined up for Pokemon Go. Ultra Unlock Part 1: Time kicks off July 23 and features Pokemon from across different eras, including Shiny Dialga. Ultra Unlock Part 2: Space follows starting August 6 and features Pokemon from different regions, as well as Shiny Palkia. The third and final Ultra Unlock event will begin on August 20, but Niantic is keeping details on that under wraps for now.
Following the largest mining difficulty drop in Bitcoin’s history, this weekend will once again see another slide, but less than 6% of the difficulty will be shaved. Statistics show Bitcoin’s hashrate has been able to climb higher since the difficulty drop two weeks ago, and climbed above 100 exahash per second (EH/s) this week. This weekend’s upcoming bitcoin mining difficulty drop will be the only time in history the difficulty slipped four times in a row.
2021’s Consecutive Difficulty Drops Come Awfully Close to 2011’s Records
After China cracked down on bitcoin miners at the end of June, a large quantity of hashpower had temporarily halted. Statistics indicate that the hashrate was around 66 EH/s on June 28 and since then it has increased to above the 100 EH/s zone.
There’s currently 18 known mining pools dedicating hashrate to the BTC chain, and 4.71 % of the global hashrate (24-hour stats) or 4.79 EH/s belongs to unknown miners.
Two weeks ago the Bitcoin network saw the largest difficulty drop ever and another difficulty drop is expected this weekend. Using today’s average hashrate, statistics show the drop will be less than 6% bringing the current difficulty of 14.36 trillion down to 13.5 trillion.
This means after the dip, the mining difficulty will have dropped four times in a row. The last time the BTC mining difficulty dropped more than four times in a row was in 2011. From August to November 2011, the mining difficulty dropped eight times in a row.
2018 Saw Three Difficulty Drops in a Row, Five Mining Pools Currently Command 59% of Bitcoin’s Hashrate
The only other time BTC’s mining difficulty came close to the four times in a row record was in 2018 for three consecutive difficulty drops between November and December.
The most recent number of difficulty drops saw 49.21% shaved off the difficulty, which is slightly less than the 51.54% shed in 2011. Back then, the difficulty tapped a high of 1.89 million in August and by November it was 1.09 million at block height 155,232.
At the time of writing, the top mining pools on Friday afternoon include Viabtc, Antpool, Poolin, F2pool, and Btc.com. These pools are followed by Binance, Foundry and Slushpool, but the top five operations command 59.4% of the global hashrate.
Binance, Foundry and Slushpool capture 21.9% of BTC’s hashpower on Friday afternoon. That leaves ten known pools and 4.79 EH/s of unknown hashpower, commanding 18.7% of the global hashrate.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott claims that new voting reforms in his state would make voting easier and more secure at the same time.
Election security is just one of many subjects being discussed at a special session of the Texas legislature Abbott called that began Thursday.

“Even Democrats in the Texas House of Representatives, they agree that as a concerns mail in ballots that is an area where improving the mail in ballot system is a way to achieve greater election integrity,” Abbott told “Fox News Sunday” host Chris Wallace. “So what Texas is doing is we’re making it easier to vote by adding more hours in early voting than we have in current law, but also making it harder to cheat with regard to mail in ballot.”
Texas is considering new voting laws after the Supreme Court ruled that Arizona’s election security measures – which included a prohibition against ballot harvesting – were legal. Abbott claimed that ballot harvesting, in which a third party collects others’ absentee ballots and submits them, poses a real threat to election integrity.
Abbott noted that a federal judge appointed by former President Barack Obama observed that voting fraud was a problem, and that federal prosecutors had investigated and prosecuted a case in which someone tried to use cocaine to buy absentee ballots.

Other topics to be discussed during the special session include border security, transgender student athletes, and critical race theory. Democrats have noted that the state’s electrical grid, which broke down last winter, is not on the agenda.
Abbott said that the power grid was not on the agenda because it was sufficiently addressed by measures taken during the regular session. He said that all of the special session’s topics had been on the agenda for the regular session and were “close to the finish line” before Democrats walked out to block voting reforms.

The governor is gearing up for a reelection campaign and one prominent name has emerged – actor Matthew McConaughey. In a recent Dallas Morning News poll, Abbott held merely a one-point lead over McConaughey. In comparison, the same poll had Abbott enjoying a 12-point lead over possible Democratic candidate Beto O’Rourke.
“It doesn’t matter what the name is, I take everybody very seriously,” Abbott said.
Bitcoin, the leading crypto asset in terms of market capitalization, has seen the cryptocurrency’s network hashrate drop considerably during the last two weeks. On Saturday, July 3, the network’s mining difficulty will see the largest epoch drop in history as the difficulty is set to slide by more than 27%.
Bitcoin Difficulty Expected to Drop More Than 27%
This weekend, Bitcoin (BTC) is set to experience the largest difficulty drop ever recorded during the crypto asset’s lifetime. At the time of writing, BTC’s mining difficulty is 19.93 trillion and is expected to drop 27.04% by Saturday morning (EDT). In bitcoin mining, the network’s difficulty is the parameter that keeps the average time between BTC blocks consistent.
The difficulty parameter is the metric that shows how difficult it is to mine a bitcoin block and the higher the difficulty, the more hashpower is needed to find a block.
When the mining difficulty on the network is lower, it is far easier for bitcoin miners to find blocks. A difficulty that keeps rising alongside the hashrate means an attacker will have to spend enormous amounts of resources to breach the system.
Bitcoin’s upcoming difficulty change comes at a time when Chinese miners have been told to operate elsewhere and a great portion of hashpower went offline this past Monday. During the last BTC difficulty change at block height 687,456 on June 13, 2021, the global hashrate was around 142.68 exahash per second (EH/s).
Since block height 687,456, BTC’s hashrate dropped by 39% to 86.5 EH/s. Bitcoin’s network difficulty has dropped two times prior to the upcoming 27% slide expected on Saturday.
November 2020 and October 2011 Precede Bitcoin’s Largest Difficulty Slide in History
The largest difficulty drop so far in BTC’s lifetime, took place on October 30, 2011, the day before Halloween.
At that time, the difficulty slid 18.03 %, at BTC block height 151,200 when the global hashrate was a meager 8.61 terahash per second (TH/s). For some perspective, today a single next-generation bitcoin miner crafted by Microbt or Bitmain commands hashpower of around 100 TH/s.
Interestingly, BTC did not see a large drop like the one in 2011 until block height 655,200 recorded on November 3, 2020. At that time last year, the mining difficulty slid 16.05% and the hashrate was around 120.12 EH/s.
Usually, BTC’s difficulty goes up more so than the number of times it has slid down during the course of its lifetime. At Bitcoin block height 685,440, BTC’s mining difficulty slid 15.97% on May 29 when the hashrate was roughly 150 EH/s.
Block Times Expected to Smooth, Hashrate Expected to Increase
At today’s 86.5 EH/s hashrate and the current 19.93 trillion difficulty, block times have been longer than ten minutes on average. After the Bitcoin difficulty change on Saturday, the time between blocks should smooth back over to closer to ten minutes on average.
Since June 29, BTC’s hashrate has increased a great deal as 30-day hashrate statistics show the network’s hashpower was only 66 EH/s that day. Saturday’s difficulty change will not only be a milestone but will also make it much easier for miners to continue ramping up resources.

Over the years, Google has made changes to its Camera app that have refined the experience, and the company is making yet another tweak that will improve how you use it.
In Google Camera 8.2.204, users will be able to record hands-free video with just a few swipes. The feature builds on a quick capture setting that was originally introduced in Google Camera 7.1 alongside the Pixel 4’s release. The feature lets you quickly start a video capture (without changing to the “Video” mode) by pressing and holding your finger on the shutter button.
In older versions of the Google Camera app, you would have to press and hold your finger on the shutter button – if you moved your finger away, the video recording would stop. Now, in Google Camera 8.2.204, you can move your finger to the left to enter “hands-free” mode, which continues the recording even when you lift your finger. You can also move your finger up to zoom in or move your finger down to zoom out. It’s a really easy way to quickly shoot hands-free video — and you can do it all with a few swipes.
The video above shows how easy it is to use the new feature — and I’m sure a lot of you are saying, “Finally!” This is one of those tweaks you probably always wanted, and should improve your everyday experience with the Google Camera app. This feature will come in handy when your hands are occupied but you still need to easily record a quick video.
Keeping your finger pressed down on the shutter button doesn’t sound particularly inconvenient. But quickly locking the button down means you can better focus on what you’re recording rather than focusing on whether your finger is still pressed down on the button. It’s the little things that wind up making a bigger difference in your everyday experience.
Google Camera 8.2.204 is rolling out now and should be available more widely in the coming days. The new feature follows another update that allowed Pixel owners to disable auto Night Sight.
