Chris Evans has been named People magazine’s ‘Sexiest Man Alive’

CNN
 —

People magazine has crowned actor Chris Evans this year’s Sexiest Man Alive.

The unveiling was made on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” with help from John Oliver and Dwayne Johnson.

In a bit that aired on the show, Oliver sat in the show’s audience as Colbert announced the winner from two finalists – Oliver and Evans, who Colbert called an “incandescent supernova of hotness.”

When Evans’ name was announced, a miffed Oliver prompted the audience to boo and stormed out angrily, demanding a “recount” as he exited.

The former “Captain America” star, who couldn’t appear on the show, was instead congratulated by Johnson on the set of their movie, “Red One.”

“It means a lot coming from a former Sexiest Man Alive,” Evans tells Johnson in the video.

Johnson, a 2016 Sexiest Man cover star, however, goes on to correct him: “I never give the title up….I’m Sexiest Man Alive in perpetuity, which means for life.”

Evans, confused, tries to get clarification, but Johnson stops him.

“Let me ask you a question, brother. Am I alive?… Am I still sexy? You bet your sexy mouth I am. We’re sharing it!”

Evans agrees and the two sexiest men alive live, apparently, happily ever after. But not before Johnson prompts his co-star to say something “sexy” into the camera and Evans obliges.

“Go vote tomorrow.”

Evans succeeds fellow Marvel alum Paul Rudd on the Sexiest mantel.

Black Adam opens at the top of the weekend box office

In a relative rarity for the U.S. box office, two big movies opened this past weekend and both made okay money—though one is more okay than the other. The big winner is Black Adam, Dwayne Johnson’s pet superhero project that took years to actually get made and opened to middling reviews (it’s one of those the fans love it things, so it makes sense that it has that cameo that everyone is just freely spoiling), which made a solid $67 million this weekend in its debut. As for number two, Ticket To Paradise, won’t you pack your bags, we’ll leave tonight: The George Clooney/Julia Robert rom-com made a hair over $16 million.

But the big stories don’t stop there, because horror movie Smile—now in its fourth week—managed to squeeze ahead of Halloween Ends in its second week (dropping from first to fourth), with the former making $8.3 million and the other making just $8 million. That seems like a very telling drop for Halloween Ends, whether it’s because of the reception to David Gordon Green’s reboot trilogy or because the movie is available on Peacock (or both), but either way it’s not a good sign for the movie’s continued viability as we wrap up the final few days of the spooky season. Smile, by the way, has made more than $84 million, which is very impressive for a movie that doesn’t have the built-in advantage of putting Michael Myers on the poster.

Finishing the top five is Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile at $4.2 million (only $28 million total after three weeks), and kicking off the bottom five is The Woman King with $1.9 million ($62 million after six weeks). From there, word of mouth and an expanded rollout bump Terrifier 2 up 83 percent from last week, but that still only makes for $1.8 million (but that might keep going up, waning days of spooky season be damned). Then, in the sub-million club, we have Don’t Worry Darling, Amsterdam, and Triangle Of Sadness—though Triangle jumped nearly 80 percent this week and expanded its theatrical rollout from 20 or so to 280, so it’s on an upswing and the others are not.

The full top 10 list is below, and you can see the rest of it at Box Office Mojo.

  1. Black Adam
  2. Ticket To Paradise
  3. Smile
  4. Halloween Ends
  5. Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile
  6. The Woman King
  7. Terrifier 2
  8. Don’t Worry Darling
  9. Amsterdam
  10. Triangle Of Sadness

‘Black Adam’ wins a star-powered box office

New York
CNN Business
 —

Who says movie stars no longer matter in Hollywood?

Theaters and box offices got a much-needed boost this weekend thanks to superhero flick “Black Adam” and romantic comedy “Ticket to Paradise” — two films led by big stars.

Let’s start with the winner of the weekend: “Black Adam.”

The Warner Bros. film, which stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as a powerful superhero, took the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office with an estimated $67 million. That is the largest domestic opening ever for Johnson in a leading role.

It’s also a much needed win for theaters, which have been in a dry spell lately due to a lack of blockbusters. The debut of “Black Adam” is the largest opening at the box office since July’s “Thor: Love & Thunder.” (Warner Bros., like CNN, is owned by Warner Bros. Discovery.)

The film, which comes with a $195 million budget, was led by Johnson who is one of the more recognizable stars in Hollywood at a time when content and characters are more bankable than big names. He has also starred in lucrative franchises such as Fast & Furious and Jumanji.

Coming in at No. 2 is Universal Pictures’ “Ticket to Paradise.” The film, which was made for $60 million and stars George Clooney and Julia Roberts as exes attending their daughter’s tropical wedding, brought in an estimated $16.3 million at the domestic box office.

Now $16.3 million may not seem like the biggest total in the world, but it’s notable since romantic comedies have become a mostly dead genre at the box office. In fact, Universal suffered a set back just a few weeks ago when “Bros.,” another romantic comedy, flopped at the box office.

Billy Eichner, the star of “Bros.,” said following the film’s disappointing debut that “straight people, especially in certain parts of the country, just didn’t show up for Bros.,” which was the first gay rom-com to be produced and distributed by a major studio with a wide theatrical release.

That may have been a factor, but it also likely hurt that the film lacked any major stars, while “Ticket to Paradise” was led by two of the biggest names in Hollywood over the last 30 years.

The film has made $96.6 million globally so far, according to Universal.

Ultimately, movie stars may not mean as much as they used to in Hollywood, but they can still help sell tickets, according to Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore

(SCOR).

“Star power is alive and well with the top two films clearly benefiting from the brand recognition and big screen appeal of the likes of Johnson, Roberts and Clooney,” Dergarabedian told CNN Business. “Though many have discounted the importance of having big stars top-lining a movie, this weekend shows that having actors with true movie star credentials can lead to box office success.”

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson says potential presidential run is ‘off the table’

It looks like The Rock is staying clear of the Oval Office.

Dwayne Johnson revealed the fate of his much-talked-about presidential bid, revealing he’s ultimately decided against it.

“It’s off the table,” Johnson told CBS Sunday Morning’s Tracey Smith. “Yes, it is off the table.

The star wrestler-turned-Hollywood juggernaut said he’s shifting all of his focus to his role as a father.

“I will say this because it requires a B-side to this. I love our country and everyone in it,” Johnson added. “I also love being a daddy.”

“And that’s the most important thing to me is being a daddy, No. 1, especially during this time, this critical time in my daughters’ lives.”

The star is a proud dad to three. He shares his 21-year-old daughter Simone Garcia Johnson with his ex-wife, Dany Garcia. The Rock shares six-year-old Jasmine and four-year-old Tiana with his current wife, Lauren Hashian.

“I know what it was like to be on the road and be so busy that I was absent for a lot of years in my first daughter’s,” Johnson said. “Growing up in this critical age at this critical time in their life, and that’s what the presidency will do. So my number one priority is my daughters.

“Sure, CEO sounds great. But the number one thing I wanna be is daddy. That’s it.”

Last year, Johnson teased he would launch a presidential campaign if it was “what the people want.”

“I do have that goal, to unite our country,” Johnson said in an episode of NBC’s “Sunday Today with Willie Geist” in April 2021. “I also feel that if this is what the people want, then I will do that.”

Johnson had teased the idea of a political career since at least 2017. In February 2021 he floated a possible run in an interview with USA Today, saying that he would “consider a presidential run in the future if that’s what the people wanted.”

A survey of more than 30,000 Americans released last year found nearly half of respondents wanted to see Johnson run for president.

Johnson responded to the Piplsay poll with a tweet, writing, “Not sure our Founding Fathers ever envisioned a six-four, bald, tattooed, half-Black, half-Samoan, tequila drinking, pick up truck driving, fanny pack-wearing guy joining their club — but if it ever happens it’d be my honor to serve the people.”

“I am passionate about making sure that our country is united,” he went on. “A united country, as we know, is its strongest, and I want to see that for our country.”

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson Reveals Intense Superhero Look In ‘Black Adam’ Trailer

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has debuted a fierce superhero look in the trailer for his upcoming DC Comics film “Black Adam.”

The flick follows the anti-hero of the same name who – after roughly 5,000 years of imprisonment – becomes free to “unleash his unique form of justice on the modern world,” according to the trailer’s description.

Johnson expressed interest in playing the character in 2007 and was set to make his first DC Extended Universe appearance in the 2019 superhero film “Shazam!,” a film about Black Adam’s enemy. Those plans, however, were scrapped in favor of the spinoff film for Johnson’s character.

Watch the trailer for “Black Adam,” set for an October 19 release date, below:

“Black Adam” marks one of two superhero movies expected to feature Johnson in 2022. He is also going to provide the voice of Superman’s dog Krypto in the upcoming film “DC League of Super-Pets.”

“Black Adam” is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, who directed “Jungle Cruise” featuring Johnson last year. In an interview with Variety, Collet-Serra called Black Adam the “Dirty Harry of superheroes” in a reference to the 1971 Clint Eastwood thriller.

Tequila could overtake vodka as America’s top liquor as sales boom

Tequila could soon overtake vodka as America’s favorite liquor, fueled by consumers’ desire for pricey bottles of agave-based spirits.

Tequila and mezcal was the second-fastest growing spirits category in 2021, trailing only premixed cocktails. Agave-based spirits saw sales climb 30.1% compared with the prior year to $5.2 billion, according to the Distilled Spirits Council of the U.S.

It was also the second-largest category by revenue behind No. 1 vodka, which has been the top-selling spirit in the U.S. since the 1970s. At $7.3 billion in revenue, vodka is still selling roughly $2 billion more annually than tequila and mezcal, but agave-based spirits could be on track to outstrip it in just a few years.

For more evidence of the trend, look no further than casinos. Julian Cox, renowned bartender and executive director of beverage and corporate mixologist for MGM Resorts International, said total sales of vodka and tequila are running neck and neck at the hospitality giant.

“Nobody could believe it,” he said.

Using volume as a measure, vodka still remains king. According to DISCUS, the liquor sold 78.1 million cases in 2021, more than double the volume of the next category: premixed cocktails. Tequila and mezcal scored a distant fourth at 26.8 million cases.

High-end tequilas are helping drive growth for the category, according to Christine LoCascio, DISCUS chief of public policy.

“It’s not just for margaritas,” LoCascio said at the trade group’s annual economic briefing on Thursday. “There are so many high-end tequilas that you can sip and savor like many other high-end products, like whiskeys and cognacs and bourbons and high-end rums as well.”

Diageo CEO Ivan Menezes echoed that sentiment on the company’s recent earnings call. The distiller owns two upscale tequila brands: Don Julio and Casamigos.

“The category’s appeal across demographics is significant,” he said. “It has crossed over. The multicultural growth is very strong. It cuts across age segments, it cuts across gender, it cuts across dayparts, the occasion and the nature of drinks. It’s not just shots and margaritas as it used to be many years ago.”

The Crown Royal owner is forecasting that tequila sales will expand faster than the broader spirits industry for the next five to 10 years. In the first half of its fiscal 2022, it saw tequila sales surge 56% over the year-earlier period.

Tequila is also helping the spirits industry steal customers from beer. Tony Abou-Ganim, celebrity mixologist and author of “Vodka Distilled,” created the beverage programs for T-Mobile Arena and Allegiant Stadium, both in Las Vegas. The sports venues have margaritas on the menu, made with fresh ingredients and 100% agave tequila.

“A lot of people think when they go to an arena or stadium, ‘I’m just going to drink beer,’ and our feeling was, if we put a better margarita in their hands, they’re going to buy margaritas. And that’s proven to be the case,” Abou-Ganim said.

DISCUS’s LoCascio also acknowledged that high-profile celebrity launches have helped draw attention to the category.

A host of celebrities have rolled out their own tequila and mezcal brands, including both actor and former professional wrestler Dwayne Johnson and model Kendall Jenner last year. In addition to hopping on the agave bandwagon, they’re hoping to emulate the success of George Clooney’s Casamigos tequila, which was sold to Diageo for $1 billion in 2017. Last year, Constellation Brands invested in “Breaking Bad” co-stars Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston’s Dos Hombres mezcal for an undisclosed amount.

Mezcal’s growth potential

About 98% of agave-based spirits’ $5.2 billion sales were from tequila, which is only made from the blue agave plant. Mezcal is a much broader label, applying to any spirit made using dozens of kinds of agave.

“[Mezcal] is growing, but it’s still a very small portion of that broader category,” LoCascio said.

MGM’s Cox is bullish on the future of mezcal, citing the wide variety of flavors and taste profiles. “Mezcal is like a flavor bomb,” he said. “For cocktail making, if you use it in the right medium, you’ve got a lot of flavor.”

Once consumers try cocktails made with mezcal, the next step for category promoters is to introduce them to spirits made with all of the different kinds of agave.

Abou-Ganim said younger consumers are leading the charge, eager to expand their taste horizons. There’s a geographic element to its growth as well. Cox, who was previously based in Los Angeles but now works in Las Vegas, said most visitors to Sin City remain largely uninformed about mezcal.

Mezcal is seen as authentic to its roots and tradition, appealing to purists like Cox and Abou-Ganim. Mexico has placed regulations on what distillers can call mezcal, limiting production to certain states in the country. (Uncertified products can be sold in the U.S. labeled as “agave spirits.”)

“They can’t make a lot of mezcal, and that’s the beauty and the art of it,” said Abou-Ganim.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson saves Fortnite In Chapter 2 Finale

He’s doing the thing!
Screenshot: Epic Games / Kotaku

After months of speculation and a sly Instagram tease, Dwayne Johnson is revealed as the voice of The Foundation in the dramatic conclusion to Fortnite chapter two. Watch The Rock turn the entire island upside-down, literally.

The Foundation is the leader of The Seven, an organization dedicated to keeping the Imagined Order (IO) from abusing the nexus of all reality in Fortnite. Appearing as a helmeted figure earlier in Fortnite’s second chapter as well as in a special Batman/Fortnite crossover comic, today The Foundation’s face covering finally came off, revealing the handsome mug of Dwayne Johnson.

Surprise?
Screenshot: Epic Games / Kotaku

Johnson’s appearance is no surprise to keen-eyed Instagram followers. A couple of days ago the wrestler/actor posted what looked like an ad for his Zoa energy drink on his Insta, but inside the refrigerator housing the beverages was a replica of The Foundation’s helmet.

The Foundation played an important role in today’s one-time-only “The End” event in Fortnite. As the Cube Queen, who’s been besieging the island for a large portion of season eight, prepares a final attack on the forces of good, The Foundation arrives at a familiar bunker deep beneath the island’s surface, just in time to save Jonesy from termination at the hands of the sinister Dr. Sloan. Jonesy and The Foundation make their way to the bunker’s control room, where the pair prepare to take us “to the other side.”

Cut to the surface, where another member of The Seven known as The Scientist, voiced by someone sounding a lot like Joel McHale of Community, leads players to the island’s core. As the entire landmass begins to tilt, players are shot out into the ocean, where they witness the final demise of the Cube Queen. Turns out even a being possessing ultimate power can’t survive having an entire island dropped on her head.

You can watch the entire event from my perspective in the video below. Keen-eyed watchers will notice former Kotaku managing editor Riley MacLeod in buff cat form accompanying my unicorn on the adventure. There’s some lag and rubber banding towards the end, but the whole story is right here.

As always with these finales, Fortnite is now down for several days as Epic prepares for the start of chapter three. The island is now upside down, so we’re getting a whole new map. Epic has a website set up that will reveal the new map once enough folks have tweeted with the hashtag #Fortniteflipped.

Meep.

In the meantime, logging into the game shows my character floating alone in the ocean. Occasionally a bit of debris floats by. Someone send snacks, please.

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson gives his custom truck to deserving fan from Culver City

CULVER CITY, Calif. (KABC) — Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson recently created an unforgettable moment for one special, and deserving, fan.

Johnson gifted his own custom-made truck to a Navy veteran from Culver City who is active in community causes and cares for his 75-year-old mother.

Johnson presented the truck to Oscar Rodriguez, who collapsed in grateful tears as he received the gift.

Johnson chose Rodriguez as part of a special screening for his new film “Red Notice” in a theater. Someone from a gym where Rodriguez used to work as a trainer nominated him, and film producers invited him to the screening. At the show, Johnson surprised Rodriguez.

Johnson later explained on Instagram why he chose Rodriguez:

“I gathered as much information as I could about everyone in the audience and ultimately, Oscar’s story moved me.
Takes care of his 75 year old mom.
Personal trainer.
Leader at his church.
Provides support and meals for women victimized by domestic violence.
Proud & humble Navy veteran.
Kind human being.”

The Rock says the original plan was to gift Rodriguez the Porsche Taycan he drives in the movie – but Porsche said no.

So instead he gave away his own personal Ford Raptor truck.

Rodriguez told Eyewitness News he is a fan of Johnson, particularly for his positivity and how he inspires others. He hopes to use the truck to pay it forward.

“I just hope and pray that this will inspire other people, will lift other people up,” he said.

Rodriguez also posted his reaction on social media.

“I woke up today, counted my blessings,” he said. “It’s Thanksgiving. There’s just so much to be thankful for.”

“Just grateful that The Rock hooked me up with this whip. I’m gonna use it, baby. I’m gonna use it to encourage people and help people. And bring a lot of cheer to people. Rock, you the man.”
