Broncos vs. Chargers score, takeaways: Dustin Hopkins fights injury to hit walk-off FG, lift L.A. over Denver

It took almost an entire extra quarter, but the Chargers edged their AFC West rival Broncos on Monday night. Neither club enjoyed much success with the ball in their hands under the lights, with Justin Herbert scattershot while throwing nearly 60 times and Russell Wilson struggling to connect downfield after arguably his best opening to a game with Denver. In the end, however, Brandon Staley’s squad got the best of Nathaniel Hackett’s, with a fumble recovery on a muffed punt late in overtime giving Los Angeles the ball deep in Broncos territory. Kicker Dustin Hopkins sealed the deal, hitting a 39-yard walk-off field goal in the Chargers’ 19-16 victory, even after looking to aggravate an injury on his first kick of the night.

Both teams entered the prime-time affair with major question marks. Denver had struggled mightily to establish offensive rhythm despite the much-anticipated Wilson-Hackett team-up, losing star running back Javonte Williams to a season-ending injury in Week 4. The issues appeared to die down early in Monday’s game, with Wilson starting 10-for-10, only to resurface afterward.

The Chargers, meanwhile, had failed to register a steady defensive showing despite Staley hailing from that side of the ball. Their efforts were improved against Denver, even with pass rusher Joey Bosa sidelined due to injury and prized offseason addition J.C. Jackson benched at halftime after surrendering several deep shots from Wilson.

Here are some additional takeaways from Monday night’s AFC West showdown:

Why the Chargers won

Dustin Hopkins. OK, so there was more to it than that, but no one deserves more credit than the veteran kicker, who missed Week 5 with a hamstring injury, aggravated that injury on his first extra point of the night, then proceeded to go 4-for-4 on field goals, including the 39-yarder to give the Chargers’ their first and final lead. He was clearly in pain, but he delivered.

Justin Herbert warrants praise for getting Hopkins reasonably close on the last series, though the quarterback was altogether more erratic and indecisive than usual, working on an apparently conservative game plan and without several key starters, namely receiver Keenan Allen and center Corey Linsley. Austin Ekeler, though bottled up for much of the night, at least served as a steady outlet, logging 10 catches to help move the ball in dinks and dunks.

The defense was even better, turning in maybe its most impressive outing of the year, albeit against a Broncos team that’s proven to be stuck in the mud. The unit totaled seven tackles for loss while drilling Wilson on multiple key downs, with linebacker Drue Tranquill blazing in untouched on a fourth-quarter blitz to force a punt. Special teams also came through, with Ja’Sir Taylor smartly forcing Broncos special teamer P.J. Locke into his own return man, Montrell Washington; the play forced a fumble that set up the Chargers’ final drive in Denver territory.

Why the Broncos lost

It’ll be easy to pin this one on Washington, the rookie returner, failing to secure the fair-catch punt late in overtime, but anyone who watched from start to finish knows this “L” — par for the course — stemmed just as much, if not more, from Hackett’s offense. Wilson looked the most comfortable he’s been all year out of the gate, taking shots downfield while on the move, but the deep balls to K.J. Hamler — or anyone, for that matter — were short-lived. In between 10 penalties, Denver went a paltry 4 for 14 on third downs, failing to get either Courtland Sutton or Jerry Jeudy involved when it mattered. It didn’t help that Wilson either had little time to throw or held the ball a touch too long late in the contest, or that Hackett sparsely deployed Mike Boone, seemingly the most dynamic of the backs left to fill in for Javonte Williams.

It’s a shame Denver once again couldn’t move the ball and/or finish drives after the promising start, because the team’s defense threatened to win the game itself. With six of their own tackles for loss, nine pass deflections and a stud performance from star cornerback Patrick Surtain II, who effectively erased Mike Williams from Herbert’s vision, the Denver “D” could only watch as time ticked on and its own offense couldn’t put points on the board.

Turning point

Undoubtedly it was when Ja’Sir Taylor blocked his man into Montrell Washington on the OT punt return. But you might also say it was when Herbert shifted outside of the pocket to deliver a nine-yard strike to Mike Williams that set up Hopkins’ 39-yard game-winner. Herbert, again, did not have a pretty night, notably throwing into traffic with just over 10 minutes left in regulation and getting picked off by Baron Browning. But he was on target in the waning minutes of OT, and that’s all that mattered.

Play of the game

It’s Taylor again. Give the special teamer some credit! Had officials reviewed one of Mike Williams’ few downfield targets, in which he laid out and came close to getting two feet in bounds while going to the ground, that might’ve been the highlight of the night. But Taylor’s awareness to essentially block a Broncos player into a muffed punt was key.

What’s next

The Broncos (2-4) will return home in Week 7 for a matchup with the red-hot Jets (4-2), who upset the Packers in Green Bay on Sunday. The Chargers (4-2), meanwhile, will stay in Los Angeles to host the Seahawks (3-3), who beat the rival Cardinals to stay tied atop the NFC West.

Dustin Lance Black says he’s recovering from a ‘serious head injury’

CNN
 —

Dustin Lance Black revealed that he is recovering from a “serious head injury” that the Oscar-winning writer experienced about a month ago.

In an Instagram post on Monday, Black did not share how he sustained his injury but said it put him “out of commission.”

“So I vanished for a while… A month ago I sustained a serious head injury that put me out of commission,” Black wrote. “Showing little improvement, my doctors ordered me to shut off my brain in hopes of it healing. This has been a challenging, frightening time for a creative type who depends on what’s in his skull to work, care and love. And now I understand the road back will be long.”

Black, who won the Academy Award for original screenplay for the 2008 film “Milk,” and, more recently, adapted “Under the Banner of Heaven” for FX and Hulu, shared a series of vacation photos with his post.

“This week my sweet, over the top husband took us to the Greek Islands to make me shut off,” Black concluded his note. “I can already feel this trip is a step in the right direction, and I finally feel safe sharing a bit again. Thank you for all of your love and patience. More to come. Promise.”

“Mama’s Boy,” a documentary about Black’s life based on his memoir of the same name, is set to premiere on HBO on Oct. 19. (CNN and HBO are both part of Warner Bros. Discovery.)

Dustin Diamond’s abandoned, trashed house finally sells after 2 years

Six months before Dustin Diamond passed away in February 2021, he was forced to put his longtime home in Port Washington, Wisconsin up for sale after a bank threatened foreclosure for unpaid dues.

More than two years later, on May 27, 2022, it finally sold for $276,400 to a real estate developer with plans of tearing down the structure and turning it into some type of commercial property, The Post can report.

As to the exact plans of the land, that remains unknown. The Post has reached out for comment.

Best known for his role as Screech Powers in “Saved By the Bell,” Diamond owed $269,326 to Wells Fargo, records show. He had initially put a $68,000 down payment on the home back in 2003 when he purchased the four-bedroom property for $340,000.

Before his death, Diamond revealed in an interview with TMZ he didn’t understand how he owed such a huge sum and that a busted water main had flooded his basement and made him lose 30 years of memories.

“Foreclosure means nothing when a house is destroyed … with my items I’ve lost,” Diamond said at the time. “It now feels like Wells Fargo is trying to kick me when I’m down.”

On Feb. 1, 2021, Diamond lost his battle to extensive stage four colon cancer only a month after his diagnosis. He was 44.

The home, which spans 3,000 square feet and is situated on half an acre, has since glided on and off the market until its recent sale. Only exterior photos of the home were included in the previous listing with the description: “great rehab project.”

“Property has been vacant for over a year,” the listing description continues. “Great for investor or handyman owner.”

Now, for the first time since his death, two viral videos take viewers inside the home, which paint a very shocking picture of Diamond’s life.

Described as a hoarder’s den, extensive clutter throughout the video is shown in the office of the home — and in one of the bedrooms and bathrooms of the property.

Clothes are scattered, several bottles collected, medicine and pill bottles are seen throughout on the bathroom sink and tub, and what appears to be feces on the bathroom floor.

It’s unclear if the abandoned house was vandalized or even faced squatters in the time since his passing, or if this was the state Diamond left the home in.

“Honestly this is exactly how I expected Screech to live after high school,” one user joked.

“That’s so sad, is it really his? Did he really live like that?” another user questioned.

“He was our neighbor in Port Washington but he rarely left his home,” another user claimed in the comment section of the video.

According to Ashley — who gave a tour of the home —  the video was recorded back when the house was still on the market. Her realtor had taken her inside to view the property.

LIV Golf: Donald Trump to play round with Bryson DeChambeau and Dustin Johnson ahead of event

The third event of the controversial Saudi-backed tour is being played at Bedminster, New Jersey, which is a Trump-owned course.

A source with LIV Golf told Reuters that Trump and his son Eric will tee up with 2020 US Open winner DeChambeau and two-time major winner Johnson during the Pro-Am on Thursday ahead of its first round which starts the next day.

The LIV Golf tour has been criticized widely for offering vast swathes of money from Saudi Arabia, a country with a dismal human rights record, for players to leave the traditional golf tours.
Earlier this month, Trump told golfers that they should join the LIV Golf series and “take the money now.”

“All of those golfers that remain ‘loyal’ to the very disloyal PGA, in all of its different forms, will pay a big price when the inevitable MERGER with LIV comes, and you get nothing but a big ‘thank you’ from PGA officials who are making Millions of Dollars a year,” Trump wrote on Truth Social Monday.

“If you don’t take the money now, you will get nothing after the merger takes place, and only say how smart the original signees were.”

His comments come as a 9/11 survivors’ group has said it is “appalled” by the “offensive, disrespectful and hurtful” LIV Golf tour ahead of the New Jersey event being staged about 50 miles (80km) from the site of the deadly terror attack.

Speaking on Tuesday at a press conference near the Bedminster course, Terry Strada, chair of 9/11 Families United — a coalition of families and survivors of the 2001 terror attacks — said that playing such a tournament so close to the venue of the worst terrorist attack in American history is wrong.

Players have also been criticized for abandoning the established PGA Tour and DP World Tour in search of eye-watering money payoffs.

The allegations of Saudi government complicity with the attacks on September 11, 2001, have long been the subject of dispute in Washington. Fifteen of the 19 al Qaeda terrorists who hijacked four planes were Saudi nationals, but the Saudi government has denied any involvement in the attacks.

The 9/11 Commission established by Congress said in 2004 that it had found “no evidence that the Saudi government as an institution or senior Saudi officials individually funded” al Qaeda.

Still, the victims’ families have pushed for further disclosures, and last year, the FBI released a document that details the FBI’s work to investigate the alleged logistical support that a Saudi consular official and a suspected Saudi intelligence agent in Los Angeles provided to at least two hijackers.

In response to the criticism, LIV Golf told CNN in a statement: “As we have said all along, these families have our deepest sympathy. While some may not agree, we believe golf is a force for good around the world.”

The 9/11 issue is just one of a number of criticisms of the LIV Golf series.

Fronted by former world No. 1 Greg Norman, the team-based LIV series is backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) — a sovereign wealth fund chaired by Mohammed bin Salman, the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia — and has pledged to award $250 million in total prize money.

Tournaments are held over 54 holes, rather than the PGA Tour’s 72 holes, and there are no players cut during tournament play.

The huge sums of money up for grabs, and less demanding requirements, spurred a number of golfers — many in the twilight of their careers — to break away from the PGA Tour and join LIV, including six-time major winner Phil Mickelson, four-time major champion Brooks Koepka and former world No. 1 Johnson.

LIV Golf LIVE: Leaderboard and Day 3 scores as Branden Grace holds off Dustin Johnson to win in Portland

Carlos Ortiz leads Dustin Johnson by one shot after first round at LIV Portland

Branden Grace produced a spectacular final round to win the LIV Golf Portland event and claim the £3.2m first prize. The South African had started two shots back of Carlos Ortiz but a round of 65 saw him storm to victory three shots clear of the Mexican. Former world No 1 Dustin Johnson had been in contention despite a slow start but couldn’t keep pace with Grace on the back-nine, while Patrick Reed’s charge came too late to threaten the top of the leaderboard.

Grace had won twice on the PGA Tour and nine times on the European Tour before defecting to LIV Golf ahead of the inaugural event at Centurion Club last month. He is part of the Stinger GC team that won just outside London as Charl Schwartzel claimed victory. Despite Grace’s performance, it was the 4 Aces team featuring Johnson, Reed, Pat Perez and Talor Gooch that took the prize this time around.

While the action unfolded, LIV Golf also announced their latest new signing in Ryder Cup regular Paul Casey. “LIV Golf continues to attract the best players in the sport as it builds increasingly competitive fields with each event,” LIV Golf’s chief executive, Greg Norman, said. “Paul Casey adds to the growing list of top 50 golfers who are excited to be part of an innovative and entertaining format that is creating something new for golf. His proven track record on a global stage adds another exciting piece to the competition as we prepare for Bedminster.”

And Grace tidies up for his par. What a stunning final round from the South African. He started two shots off the lead but finishes two clear thanks to a near-flawless round of 65.

There is still some drama to come on the final green in the team format though. Ortiz might have been unable to catch Grace but a birdie on the last ensures his Fireballs GC have edged Torque GC to third place.

Grace doesn’t shy away from taking his driver at 18 but he’s driven the ball so well it’s hardly a surprise. A safe approach finds the heart of the green and the South African’s victory is a formality now.

And Grace is running away with it now. That’s a brilliant up and down from the rough for birdie at 17 and he’s seven-under-par for his round! Grace leads by three and the £3.2m grand prize is within his grasp.

Grace misses the fairway at the par-5 17th and his lay-up is pulled into the rough left of the green. It’s a tricky pitch from there but he still has an outside chance of getting up and down for birdie. Johnson lashed a fierce drive down the middle but his approach finds the front bunker from 211 yards.

Branden Grace was the only one in the final group to miss the green at 16 but the South African chips in for birdie! Ortiz, who’d been eyeing up a two-shot swing, is suddenly left with a must-make birdie putt and drags it low of the hole. Grace leads by two with two holes to play.

It’s two shots now! Grace rolls in a birdie putt at 15 after a wonderful approach to move to -11. He’s five-under-par for his round. Ortiz had a good chance at birdie himself but the Mexican’s putter has gone cold and he stays at -10.

Day 1 Concludes With Schwartzel in Lead

Charl Schwartzel closed his opening round with a birdie to grab a one-shot lead. Schwartzel is a former Masters champion and one of 17 current or former PGA Tour members competing in this event. LIV events are 54 holes, so two rounds remain.

Hennie Du Plessis shot 4 under and is alone in second place, one back.

DAY 1 COMPLETE LEADERBOARD

Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson were grouped together, and they shot matching one-under 69s to trail Schwartzel by four shots.

“Other than a couple loose drives, I felt like I hit my irons really good. The golf course is tough and conditions are really tough,” Johnson said afterward on the broadcast.

Here’s a look at the Day 1 final leaders:

Who is Phachara Khongwatmai?

The 48-man field at the LIV Golf opener has some players familiar to most golf fans but many more that likely aren’t.

One of the latter would be the leader at 4 under par with three holes to go at Centurion Club, Thailand’s Phachara Khongwatmai. The 23-year-old is ranked No. 133 in the world and a regular on the Asian Tour.

In 2013 at age 14, he became the youngest winner of a professional tournament when he won the Sing Hua Hin Open on the All Thailand Golf Tour. Three years later he played in the British Open at age 17, missing the cut.

The LIV Golf Invitational Series is sanctioned by the Asian Tour. LIV Golf Investments, the company launched last October with the idea of supporting golf throughout the world, has committed $300 million to the Asian Tour for a series of 10 events per year meant to help grow the tour. The Public Investment Fund, an autonomous wealth fund administered by the government of Saudi Arabia, is the main shareholder of LIV Golf Investments.

Three players from Thailand are in the field as well as three from Japan.

How the LIV Broadcast Looks and Sounds

As with any new league, plenty of curiosity surrounded where and how LIV Golf would be broadcasted.

For the opener outside London, LIV Golf is broadcasted on its own website, YouTube and Facebook. And it looks like … a golf tournament.

The presentation includes a constantly updating leaderboard on the left side of the screen, with players and their team logos. At the top left is the number of holes remaining, as with a shotgun start all the players finish at roughly the same time.

American golf fans who complain about broadcasts with too many commercial breaks, take note — there are no sponsor obligations this week with the new series, hence no commercials. During the opening-round broadcast there have been virtually no features or other segments to take away from the golf.

As for the commentary, the main booth has longtime Premier League soccer broadcaster Arlo White, who is English, along with American Jerry Foltz, most recently of Golf Channel and Hong Kong native Dom Boulet, the voice of the Asian Tour.

Dustin Double Bogeys the 7th Hole

It’s not all smiles at the Centurion Club. On the par-4 7th hole, Dustin Johnson blew his drive out of bounds to the right and flung his tee in disgust.

He made a double bogey on the hole to fall from 1 under to 1 over on the round, tied for 15th in the event.

Johnson is playing alongside Phil Mickelson — LIV Golf put its two biggest names together and started them on the 1st tee — and Mickelson is also 1 over in his first pro golf since the Saudi International in early February.

How the Team Format Works

One of LIV Golf’s major selling points is its four-man team format. With 12 holes remaining in the round — how LIV tracks time given the shotgun start — the Crushers GC team was leading at 4 under.

Phachara Khongwatmai of Thailand was at 4 under, leading the Crushers as well as the entire event.

The team score is calculated with the best two scores on a team for the first two rounds, and the three best scores in the third and final round.

The top three teams earn shares of a $5 million prize pool, with $3 million for first, $1.5 million for second and $500,000 for third split between the four players. So, in theory, one player could have a poor event but three good teammates and get a nice payday.

So, What Are They Wearing?

If you’re just tuning in, you’ll notice that most of the players won’t look any different sartorially than in other tournaments. Dustin Johnson and Sergio Garcia, for example, are in their usual threads with the Adidas logo; Garcia with an Adidas hat and Johnson a TaylorMade logo hat.

Players’ LIV Golf teams are represented through the caddies, who have team names and logos on their vests.

As for Phil Mickelson, who lost sponsors in the wake of his comments in February about the PGA Tour’s “obnoxious greed” and the Saudi-backed league, he’s wearing a black hat with his own jumping-Phil logo and a black vest with the Augusta National Golf Club logo.

Play Begins at LIV Golf Opener

Dustin Johnson’s opening shot was shown live on the broadcast, and he split the fairway. Phil Mickelson is grouped with DJ, and he also hit the fairway with his opening shot on No. 1. And so begins a new golf league.

The Broadcast is Live

In the opening moments of the webcast, Greg Norman joins the booth and says, “I’m excited to bring free agency to golf. The shotgun start is moments away.

A Ride To the Shotgun Start

As anyone who has ever played in a charity golf tournament or big event at their local club knows, the transportation for a shotgun start is controlled chaos. Usually it entails an army of golf carts all launched at once from the clubhouse.

LIV Golf took it a step further by grabbing a fleet of London black cabs to transport players all over Centurion Club.

LIV Golf also dropped a hype video on Thursday, narrated by Dennis Quaid.

Show Me the Money

If the broadcast has not made it abundantly clear what the players are competing for this week, here’s a quick primer.

Of the 12 teams competing, only the top three will earn shares of the $5 million purse — first place splits $3 million four ways ($750,000 per player), second place splits $1.5 million ($375,000 per player) and third place earns $500,000 ($125,000 per player).

Individually, $4 million will go to the winner, followed by $2.125 million (second), $1.5 million (third) and $1.05 million (fourth). Further down, 12th will earn $450,000, 24th gets $168,000 and dead last earns $120,000.

At best, a player could earn $4.75 million come Saturday evening. At worst, a player leaves with, well, $120,000.

Dustin Johnson resigns from PGA Tour

Days after announcing he would play in the inaugural LIV Golf event this week in London, Dustin Johnson indicated he has resigned from the PGA Tour entirely.

Johnson, a two-time major winner and former world no. 1, is the biggest name to officially defect from the PGA Tour. Sergio Garcia, Louis Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel and Branden Grace have also resigned their memberships, joining Kevin Na, who did so over the past weekend. Phil Mickelson, who announced Monday that he is playing on the LIV tour, indicated that he intends to keep his PGA Tour lifetime membership.

“I resigned my membership from the Tour and I’m going to play here, for now. That’s the plan,” Johnson said in a press conference Tuesday morning. “What the consequences are going to be I can’t comment on how the Tour’s going to handle it. I can’t answer for the majors, but hopefully they’re going to allow us to play.”

Johnson is exempt for all four majors, but the USGA and the R&A — the entities controlling the upcoming U.S. Open and Open Championship — have not indicated whether they will prevent LIV Golf players from competing.

Johnson’s decision is a way of sidestepping the possibility of punishment or litigation that could await PGA Tour members who defy the Tour’s order not to play in LIV events. The question of whether PGA Tour members are employees or independent contractors is a murky one, likely to end up in a courtroom. Johnson effectively removed himself from any legal battles over his status.

However, the resignation not only takes Johnson off the Tour’s weekly schedule of tournaments; Johnson is now ineligible to play in the Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup tournaments. Last fall, Johnson went 5-0-0 to help the United States to a thorough dismantling of Europe.

“If someone wants to play on a Ryder Cup for the U.S.,” PGA of America CEO Seth Waugh said last year, “they’re going to need to be a member of the PGA of America, and they get that membership through being a member of the (PGA) Tour.”

“The Ryder Cup is unbelievable and has definitely meant a lot to me,” Johnson said. “I’m proud to say I’ve played and represented my country and hopefully I will get a chance to do that again, but I don’t make the rules.”

The inaugural LIV event, held at Centurion Golf Club outside London, begins on Thursday with a $25 million purse, including $4 million to the winner. The Saudi-backed venture plans for eight events this year, and will scale upward in coming years through a $2 billion pledge from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.
