Warriors observations: Jordan Poole, short-handed Dubs crushed by Pelicans

No Stephen Curry, no Draymond Green, no Klay Thompson, no Andrew Wiggins added up to no chance for a Warriors victory Monday night in New Orleans.

Overmatched from the start, falling behind 10 in the first six minutes and by 24 after 11 minutes, the Warriors absorbed a 128-83 beating by the Pelicans at Smoothie King Center.

Four Warriors (8-10) scored in double figures, led by 26 points from Jordan Poole and 18 from Jonathan Kuminga.

On the whole, this was about as bad as the Warriors can look. They had almost twice as many turnovers (27) as assists (16).

Here are three observations from four starters watched in street clothes and the fifth, Kevon Looney, played only five minutes:

Warriors play Santa

Christmas might be 34 days away, but the Warriors didn’t want to wait so long to get in the spirit of giving.

Then again, they were in New Orleans.

Golden State committed 27 turnovers, handing the Pelicans 31 points, eclipsing the previous season high of 23 turnovers the Warriors delivered in their first trip to the Big Easy in Nov. 4.

The Warriors wasted no time setting a charitable tone, committing seven giveaways in the first quarter, accounting for nine of the Pelicans’ 35 points in the first 12 minutes.

Most everybody got into the act, with rookie Ryan Rollins committing five in 16 minutes and Poole committing four in 27 minutes. Ten players took the court, and all by Looney committed at least two giveaways

The Pelicans, playing at near full strength, didn’t need any help. They got it anyway.

The flying Mr. Kuminga

Given the length, speed and athleticism of the Pelicans, this game figured to be one that suited the best attributes of Kuminga.

And the 20-year-old forward, in his second season, managed to showcase his gifts several times, serving up high-quality video highlights.

The first came in the second minute of the game, when the athletic marvel that is Zion Williamson grabbed a rebound and set sail for a coast-to-coast voyage sure to end with an easy bucket. Nope. Kuminga chased him down and slapped the shot off the backboard.

The second came late in the second quarter, when Poole’s 3-point shot bounced high off the rim. Kuminga, flying in from the wing, grabbed the ball with his right hand and jammed it through, with his hand narrowly missing the backboard.

JK finished with 18 points, three rebounds and a couple memorable moments.

Why not Wiseman?

While the NBA Golden State Warriors were frolicking in New Orleans, James Wiseman was toiling away in Salt Lake City with the G League Santa Cruz Warriors.

Insofar as the Warriors rested their starters, turning the game over to players in and out of the rotation, it would not have been illogical give Wiseman a few NBA minutes.

Asked before the game if there was any consideration for bringing Wiseman in for this game – rookies Patrick Baldwin Jr. and Ryan Rollins – coach Steve Kerr said there was not.

“No, not for tonight. We felt it was really important for him to get a really good stretch in Santa Cruz of practicing,” he said. “The practice is the big thing. When you get individualized attention, like the guys do in the G League, it’s easier to make more progress rather than the stops and starts that happen during the NBA season when you’re not in the rotation.”

RELATED: Kerr believes G League will help Wiseman build foundation

It’s a rational explanation, on the surface, but would have more credibility if the Warriors had not summoned rookies Patrick Baldwin Jr. and Ryan Rollins from Santa Cruz on Sunday evening.

Elon Musk dubs himself ‘Chief Twit,’ visits Twitter HQ with deal set to close

Comment

SAN FRANCISCO — Elon Musk is on track to buy Twitter. For real this time.

The world’s richest person showed up at Twitter’s San Francisco headquarters Wednesday for meetings with executives and changed his bio on Twitter to “Chief Twit.”

The moves signal the $44 billion deal is on track to close this week, something echoed by people close with Musk who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive matters. Financing is lining up to finalize the deal.

Twitter’s stock closed at $53.35 — just under Musk’s offer of $54.20, signaling the market believes it will go through, too.

It’s a far cry from just a few weeks ago, when Twitter and Musk were locked in litigation after the Tesla chief executive attempted to back out of his deal to acquire the social media company, citing problems with spam and bots.

Elon Musk offers to buy Twitter for original price, weeks before trial

On his Twitter account Wednesday, Musk praised the company’s capacity for enabling “citizen journalism,” and said entities such as local news organizations “should get way more prominence” on the site.

Twitter’s chief marketing officer, Leslie Berland, sent an email to staff Wednesday morning saying Musk would be in the San Francisco offices and encouraged employees to “say hi,” according to a copy viewed by The Washington Post.

Musk later tweeted a video of him walking into the company’s reception area, carrying a sink to indicate that the reality of his ownership should “sink in.”

Twitter spokeswoman Rebecca Hahn confirmed a companywide communication that said Musk would address the company on Friday.

On internal Slack channels, Twitter employees posted videos as Musk made his rounds in the office, greeting workers and asking them what they thought of different Twitter products, such as the subscription service Twitter Blue that the company is currently beta-testing.

“This is a sweet office,” he said in one clip described to The Post. In another, about 25 people gathered around him and asked questions, including whether he really planned to fire 75 percent of the staff.

The Post reported last week that Musk laid out plans to lay off nearly three-fourths of Twitter’s staff as he seeks to implement aggressive cost-cutting and loosen the site’s content moderation standards. Musk said he didn’t plan to do so.

Musk is funding a large portion of the deal through debt from a group of seven major banks. Spokespeople for BNP Paribas and Societe Generale did not respond to a request for comment. Spokespeople for Bank of America, Barclays, Morgan Stanley, Mizuho and MUFG declined to comment.

Musk’s team was pitching investors throughout the weekend, the people said, as they looked to lessen his financial burden in the deal.

Musk shifted his opinion on whether to buy the company after a series of losses in Delaware Chancery Court in matters related to scheduling and discovery, according to the people close to Musk and his team. A loss became a serious possibility if the matter went to trial, risking penalties beyond merely the buying cost. And the blows to Tesla’s stock and Musk’s net worth became a lingering concern.

Musk acknowledged to overpaying for the site during Tesla’s earnings call last week.

Documents detail plans to gut Twitter’s workforce

Musk also took solace in his debt and equity commitments, which locked him into the deal on favorable terms that might not be otherwise available, the people said. And he became excited by his plans for the site.

As Elon Musk expands his reach, Washington worries

The initial phase of his ownership will focus on talent — and Musk is expected to look to his other companies, Tesla and SpaceX, to seek out specialists who might help Twitter reverse its fortunes, the people said.

Steph joins Dubs fans in mocking Boston bar that insulted Ayesha

After the Warriors won Game 5 Monday night and took a 3-2 series lead, Curry himself got in on making fun of the bar’s possibly series-jinxing sign.

When speaking to reporters after the game, Curry arrived wearing a custom t-shirt reading, “Ayesha Curry CAN Cook,” clearly a swipe at Game On!, the bar outside Fenway Park that displayed the sign. A reporter in the room was seemingly unaware of the context behind the shirt, and naturally had questions as to why Curry was wearing a shirt proclaiming that a celebrity chef can cook. After all, it’s the equivalent of her wearing a shirt that reading “Steph Curry can play basketball.”

“You gotta ask around the room and ask Twitter,” Curry replied.

Curry finished with 16 points in Game 5, and snapped a streak of 233 straight regular season and postseason games with a made three-pointer. The last time he played a game without making a single three was in November 2018.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been happier after a 0-for-whatever type of night, just knowing the context of the game, the other ways you tried to impact the game and the fact that you had four guys step up in meaningful ways to help us win offensively,” Curry said after the game.

The Warriors will have a chance to close out the series Thursday night, when the series heads back to Boston one last time for Game 6. We shall see if the bar has any new signage or if it would prefer to hide under a rock since the Warriors are now 2-0 in games since the sign was discovered.

Things almost got ugly between Dubs fans, Charles Barkley

The faux feud between Charles Barkley and Golden State Warriors nearly got very real after the Dubs’ Western Conference Finals Game 5 coronation Thursday night.

With TNT’s “Inside The NBA” crew posted up outside Chase Center, Warriors fans began pelting Barkley with projectiles and drinks. Barkley has spent the playoffs (and in fact, several years) dumping on the Bay Area, Warriors fans and the city of San Francisco while reveling in the locals’ hate, encouraging crowds chanting “CHUCK YOU SUCK.”

It’s all been good clean sports hate — unless you were this one Warriors fan’s mother — but judging by the reaction of Barkley’s coworkers, things were on the verge of crossing a line Thursday.

After at least two objects flew in Barkley’s direction, the NBA Hall of Famer snapped out of his seat and wielded his coffee cup while facing the rowdy crowd outside Chase Center. Shaq found it hilarious, laughing while Barkley was facing off with the crowd, but Ernie Johnson and Kenny Smith seemed to take it slightly more seriously, repeatedly imploring “Sit down, Chuck.”

Barkley, who went out of his way several times to say how happy he was that the Finals were on ABC and not TNT, eventually sat back down before the network went to a commercial break. Once the program resumed, Barkley completed the next few segments without major incident.

Steph Curry and Draymond Green later hit the set for a short interview, and a fired-up Curry thanked Barkley for coming to his beloved San Francisco.

Chase Center erupts after Dubs’ announcer calls for ‘sensible gun laws’

Ahead of Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals on Thursday night, the Golden State Warriors held a moment of silence for the victims of Tuesday’s mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

Unlike past moments of silence, the announcer at Chase Center concluded by providing resources for individuals seeking “sensible gun laws in America.” Even though the arena had only about a third of its fans in their seats at the time of the announcement, the cheers were very loud.

On Wednesday, the Miami Heat had a similar ending to its moment of silence. The team announcer told fans, “The Heat urges you to contact your state senators by calling 202-224-3121 to leave a message demanding their support for common sense gun laws.”

Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, a longtime advocate for stronger gun laws, had previously expressed his displeasure with the fact that moments of silence tend not to accomplish much.

“I think it’s the right thing to do to have a moment of silence but I’ll be honest, it’s probably the ninth or 10th moment of silence that I will have experienced as coach of the Warriors when we mourn losses of people who have died in mass shootings,” he said after a shooting in Sacramento in April. “I don’t think moments of silence are going to do anything. At some point, at some point, our government has to decide, ‘Are we going to have some common sense gun laws?’ It’s not going to solve everything, but it will save lives.”

After this week’s Texas shooting, he struck a similar tone.

“When are we going to do something?” the coach said. “I’m so tired of getting up here and offering condolences to the devastated families that are out there; I’m tired of the excuses; I’m tired of the moments of silence. Enough.”

Russian TV pundit dubs Ukraine war ‘rehearsal’ for NATO clash

Russia’s war in Ukraine may be a “rehearsal” for a possible large-scale conflict with NATO countries, a leading Russian political scientist has warned.

Alexei Fenenko, a research fellow at the Institute of International Security Studies and associate professor at Moscow State University’s School of World Politics, appeared on the state TV talk show “60 Minutes” airing on the Russia-1 channel and raised the prospect of a broader clash with the West.

“For us, the war in Ukraine … is a rehearsal for a possibly larger conflict in the future,” he said. “And that is why we’ll test and go up against NATO weapons, and will see on the battlefield how much stronger our weapons really are compared to theirs.”

“Maybe it will be a learning experience for a future conflict,” he added.

Olga Skabeyeva, the host of the show, who is considered to be a chief Kremlin propagandist, then chimed in, observing that “it’s a terrifying experiment.”

Alexei Zhuravlyov, a member of the nationalist Rodina political party, said during a recent appearance on the channel that “one Sarmat missile and the British Isles will be gone,” Newsweek reported.

Retired four-star US Gen. Barry R. McCaffery described Feneko’s NATO war remarks as “astonishing.”

“The economic and conventional military power of NATO/EU is multiple times that of Russia,” the three-time Purple Heart recipient tweeted Thursday. “A rehearsal for a war with NATO against a much smaller adversary in Ukraine that’s going very badly for Russia.”

By Ukraine’s estimates, since the start of the invasion on Feb. 24, Russian forces have lost 28,000 soldiers and countless pieces of military equipment, including tanks and the nation’s Black Sea flagship, the Moskva.

NATO has refrained from getting directly involved in the Ukraine war, but many of its member states, led by the US, have supplied tens of billions of dollars in financial and humanitarian aid, as well as a wide range of weapons, to Ukraine in its struggle against Russia.

James Wiseman, Dubs’ young talent is secret sauce to winning without Klay Thompson

The Golden State Warriors snapped a four-game losing streak with a massive win against the Utah Jazz, the team with the NBA’s best record this 2020-21. Although Draymond Green registered his 26th triple-double and Stephen Curry poured in 32 points, it was rookie James Wiseman and young prospects Jordan Poole and Nico Mannion who kept the Dubs in position to finish the game.

The youngsters recorded 39 of the Warriors’ bench points in the win.

After the game, Green spoke highly about the improvement of Poole.

“You have to give him a lot of credit. He is in this gym every day with (Player Development Coach) Luke (Loucks), (Assistant Coach/Director of Player Development), CD (Chris DeMarco), and those guys getting his work in. He went down to G League, and (Head Coach) Kris Weems held him accountable. I think that he took a few steps forward, not just offensively but overall as a player down there under Kris Weems’ tutelage,” Green said of the Warriors youngster.

“It is showing as he has come back up here. I think that it has been three or four games now. It is showing in his play. You have to give that kid a lot of credit. I’m not sure if anyone on our team is in the gym more than him. It feels good when you see guys like that get rewarded.”

For his part, Wiseman has shown flashes of how great he can be, but just like Golden State as a whole, the rookie has been inconsistent throughout his first year in the pros. In a matchup where he was guarded by one of the NBA’s best centers, he had maybe his best game of the season. Coach Steve Kerr was pleased with Wiseman and the other young players who had productive games.

“The idea is that James is a scorer. He scores the ball pretty easily if he gets it in the right positions, and Jordan and Nico are both capable of getting him the ball in those spots, so we think the three of them make a good group together. If Jordan or Nico are able to knock down shots and James is that threat on the pick-and-roll, then we can develop an offensive identity with that group, and that’s the idea,” Kerr explained.

“I like their competitiveness, too. All three guys really want to be out there. They want to compete and win. This is all part of what we are trying to do this year. I’ve said it many times, we are trying to win games, and we are trying to develop young guys, and we are trying to do it all at once. Tonight, we were able to thread that needle, so let’s hope we can continue to do this.”

Nico Mannion, Jordan Poole making the most of their Warriors’ opportunity

Mannion and Poole spent most of the season down in the NBA G-League. Since being called up, both players have been key pieces in the second unit. They make mistakes, but neither player is shying away from the competition.

On Sunday inChase Center, they put together their best performance together as a member of the Warriors. Kerr recognized the productivity with the two combined with Wiseman.

“I thought all three guys were great. We’re kind of throwing them into the deep end a little bit, but we love their talent and their potential, and we also really like the way they play together. They fit well together because of James’ threat as a dive-man, and both Jordan and Nico are good pick-and-roll players, and Jordan and Nico really have developed a good synergy over the course of the season. They are good friends, and they went to Orlando and played really well together. I realize putting all three of them out there with that second group is putting a lot on their shoulders, but there is a reason why we are doing it. We believe in those guys.”

Golden State came into the game struggling to find a productive second unit, and so the Jazz–led by All-Stars Donavan Mitchell, Rudy Gobert, and Mile Conley–were expected to dominate from the get-go. Instead, however, the Dubs saw a glimpse of their bright future with the trio of youngsters leading the way.

“I think we have a lot of potential. We’re extremely gifted and talented, and as soon as we’re able to gain chemistry, all five guys, and catch a little bit of rhythm like we did later in the second quarter and in the fourth quarter today, I think we’re dangerous” Poole said postgame.

The Dubs recorded 33 assists in the win against the Jazz, and the bench scored 51 points led by Poole (18) and Wiseman (16). They face LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers next as they look to go 2-0 in back-to-back home games.
