Latest PS5 Firmware Update Available Now, Prepares for DualSense Edge Launch

The time has come once again: Sony has just released the latest firmware update for PS5. Fire up your console and you’ll find it’s ready to download and install (you’ll also need to sign in after agreeing to the updated terms of service). At just over 1GB in size, it’s not going to take you too long to sort out.

This time, the new system software — version 22.02-06.50.00, if you’re wondering — has not one but two patch notes. Here they are:

  • The DualSense Edge wireless controller is now supported.
  • This system software update improves system performance.

So, it’s pretty much business as usual for firmware updates, only this one also prepares your console for the arrival of the DualSense Edge. To recap, this is a premium PS5 controller arriving on the 26th January, offering greater flexibility with customisable thumb sticks, triggers, control profiles, and back-facing buttons. As long as you update your PS5 to this new firmware, the Edge controller will be good to go.

DualSense Edge vs. Xbox Elite Series 2 Controller: How Do They Compare?

PlayStation has finally entered the realm of high-end “pro” controllers with the DualSense Edge, announced at Gamescom Opening Night Live. The features and design of the DualSense Edge clearly offer PlayStation players something similar to Xbox’s Elite controller lineup, particularly the Xbox Elite Wireless Series 2.

Pricing, release date, dimensions, and weight, have yet to be revealed as of publication. However, PlayStation shared plenty of information on what this controller will feature, giving us a better idea of its capabilities.

To better understand the DualSense Edge, let’s take a look at the specs (so far), dig into its standout features, and see how it compares to the Xbox Elite Series 2, in addition to the base DualSense and Xbox wireless controllers.

Illustration by Amanda Flagg / IGN

DualSense Edge vs. Xbox Elite Series 2: Brief Overview

The infographic above provides a quick overview of what the DualSense Edge and Xbox Elite Series 2 offer (and how they compare to each company’s standard controller models). But let’s break down some of the bigger things included in the higher-end controllers.

The DualSense Edge includes adjustable trigger hair locks on the back of the device, similar to the Elite line. This means you can adjust the travel distance of the controller’s triggers, which is useful when playing competitive shooters or when you want to minimize the dead zone while playing racing games. The DualSense Edge offers three trigger stop positions which you can adjust with a small toggle next to both triggers on either side of the controller.

Additionally, Sony confirmed all the signature features available in the DualSense, such as haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, motion controls, and a built-in microphone, will also be present in the Edge.

The Edge also brings with it the DualSense’s internal battery and USB-C support. Both the DualSense Edge and Xbox Elite Series 2 also include a case that allows you to charge the controllers with a USB-C cable when stored. While we can hope the DualSense Edge will have an improved battery life over the DualSense, the decision to make it easy to charge the controller when it is stored in the case to keep it secured and juiced up is a nice touch.

In comparison, the Xbox Elite Series 2 controller offers an internal, rechargeable battery, while the standard Xbox wireless controller still depends on two AA batteries to function.

The big difference is that the Xbox Elite Series 2 does not include a USB-C cable like the DualSense Edge; the controller’s packaging includes a wireless charging dock. Simply plug a USB-C cable into the back of the dock and place the Elite Series 2 on the dock and it will charge while in the case.

DualSense Edge vs. Xbox Elite Series 2: Customization

The DualSense Edge and Xbox Elite Series 2 offer a wide range of customization options. But one thing that certainly provides a competitive edge for the DualSense Edge is the ability to replace the stick modules, something the Xbox Elite controller does not offer.

Although the stick modules will be sold separately, the fact that you can change the thumbsticks entirely is a big deal, as there have been reports since the PS5’s launch of controller drift. The option to replace the thumbsticks will help increase the longevity of the DualSense Edge.

Both controllers come with removable thumbsticks, though. The Xbox Elite Series 2 offers a set of six adjustable-tension thumbsticks: two standard, two classic, one tall, and one wide dome. The DualSense Edge will offer three types of stick caps: standard, high dome, and low dome.

Xbox Elite Wireless Series 2 Controller Review

Button remapping is also available on both controllers. The Xbox Elite Series 2 offers three different ways for you to remap buttons, including one that requires going to the Accessories app on your Xbox. The DualSense Edge, as noted in the PlayStation Blog, features an “on-controller user interface” with a dedicated Fn button that will allow you to adjust your controller’s settings and other things like game volume. While Sony did not officially confirm whether the DualSense Edge will support PC, if the standard DualSense is anything to go off of, hopefully, the controller will be compatible with PC (and mobile) devices as well. Especially considering Sony’s recent expansion into the PC market and a firmware update app for PC.

Customizable player profiles are also a big selling point for these high-end controllers. While Sony did not officially confirm how many profiles you can store on the DualSense Edge, Xbox Elite Series 2 controllers allow you to store up to three custom player profiles.

While we still have much to learn about the DualSense Edge, early signs indicate that this will be a pretty solid contender in the high-end market. Especially for PS5 players who thus far have had to resort to third-party controller-makers like Scuf if they wanted a high-end option for Sony’s console. In the meantime, check out the evolution of PlayStation controllers, and be sure to tune into IGN’s weekly PlayStation show, Podcast Beyond!, for more on the latest news in the world of PlayStation.

Sony enters the high-end custom controller arena with the DualSense Edge

As long rumored, Sony announced details about its plans to enter the high-end controller game with the DualSense Edge, an advanced cousin to the PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller with added customization options and features.

If you’ve seen or used Microsoft’s Xbox Elite Series 2 or controllers from SCUF or others in that market, you’ll see a lot that’s familiar here.

The DualSense Edge includes all the same features seen in the DualSense, like haptic feedback, but it adds the ability to customize button mapping, stick sensitivity, trigger travel distance, and dead zones in multiple swappable control profiles.

It also offers changeable stick caps, and it supports back buttons that allow you to perform the same inputs you would with the (for example) triangle, cross, square, and circle face buttons without taking your thumb off the right stick. That’s particularly helpful for serious first-person shooter players, as it allows you to initiate jumps or slides in many games’ default control schemes while maintaining control of your aim.

The controller ships with multiple options for the stick caps and back buttons. That includes either half-dome or lever shapes for the back buttons and either standard, high dome, or low dome stick caps.

The stick modules can also be replaced to extend the life of the controller, Sony says, but those replacement stick modules will be sold separately—not included in the box like the caps or back buttons.

A “dedicated Fn button” will allow players to swap between pre-set control configurations, adjust game and mic relative volume, and head to the PS5’s controller profile settings menu directly from the controller itself.

The DualSense Edge will come with a case to store all those extras in, as well as a USB-C cable that locks onto the controller to prevent accidental unplugging.

DualSense Edge announcement video.

Sony hasn’t named a release date or price for this controller, but judging from other competing high-end controllers like Microsoft’s Xbox Elite Series 2 or SCUF’s Reflex for PS5, it’s not likely to be cheap. Those controllers typically range anywhere from around $180 to more than $200. Sony’s base controller for the PS5, the DualSense, is already quite pricey, with an MSRP of $70.

For the most part, the DualSense Edge seems almost a feature-to-feature counter to Microsoft’s Xbox Elite Series 2. That said, Microsoft’s controller also emphasizes nicer materials and in-hand feel, and Sony’s announcement hasn’t said anything about how the DualSense Edge will (or won’t) differ from the DualSense in that regard.

PlayStation VR2 gets a release window

Sony also finally named a release window for the PlayStation VR2, the PlayStation 5-exclusive follow-up to the highly successful 2016 PlayStation VR headset for the PlayStation 4.

In a tweet and an Instagram post, Sony announced that the headset is “coming early 2023” and accompanied the social posts with an image depicting the headset and its two controllers—though we’ve seen both before.

Enlarge / The image of the PlayStation VR2 headset and controllers that Sony shared on social media when announcing the release window.

Sony

As we’ve learned previously, the headset will have a 110-degree field of view, 2,000 x 2,040 per-eye resolution at either 90 Hz or 120 Hz, and it will feature HDR OLED displays for each eye.

Perhaps most importantly, it will support eye-tracking that enables foveated rendering, a technique that allows VR headsets to focus their horsepower on the pixels that are clearest at the center of your view while allowing for natural blurriness in your peripheral vision.

And it will connect to the PS5 with a single USB-C cable with no external camera required—a far cry from the wire-laden unwieldy connections seen in the original PSVR.

2022 Apple MacBook Pro 13″ with Retina Display, M2 Chip with 8-Core CPU and 10-Core GPU, 8GB Memory, 512GB SSD

We’re finally seeing a 2022 Apple MacBook Pro laptop equipped with the brand new M2 chip in the wild. Amazon has the 14″ model up for preorder right now for a very reasonable MSRP of $1499. The new M2 chip is reported to be about 18% more powerful than the previous generation M1 chip, which was already a speed demon for its price range. The M2 chip is also extremely power efficient, with this laptop boasting up to 20 hours of battery life on a single charge. In addition to the new M2 CPU, this laptop features a gorgeous 13″ Retina display with 500 nits of brightness and P3 wide color, 10-core GPU, 8GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD.

2021 Apple MacBook Pro 14″ M1 Pro Laptop

Apple MacBook Pro 16″ M1 Pro model also on sale

Late 2021 Apple MacBook Pro 14″ with Liquid Retina XDR Display, M1 Pro Chip with 8-Core CPU and 14-Core GPU, 16GB Memory, 512GB SSD

Late 2021 Apple MacBook Pro 16″ with Liquid Retina XDR Display, M1 Pro Chip with 10-Core CPU and 16-Core GPU, 16GB Memory, 512GB SSD

Amazon is offering the lowest price we’ve ever seen on the 2021 Apple MacBook Pro 14″ laptop equipped with the new powerful Apple M1 Pro chip and a gorgeous 14.2″ Liquid Retina XDR display. The Apple M1 Pro chip is a bona fide speed demon that offers better performance while generating less heat and consuming less power than any of the Intel chips that Apple used in previous models, as well as the previous M1 chip. Note that the M1 Pro chip is more powerful than the upcoming M2 chip. It will eventually be outclassed by the M2 Pro, but that’s in the future. This laptop also boasts a 14-core GPU, 16GB RAM, and 512GB SSD.

Alternatively, you can upgrade to the Apple MacBook Pro 16″ model with the 10-core Apple M1 Pro chip, a bump up from the Macbook Pro 14″ 8-core chip. This laptop also boasts a 16-core GPU, 16GB RAM, and 512GB SSD.

$50 Off the Newest Apple TV 4K

With this deal you can basically get the 64GB Apple TV model for the same price as the 32GB model. The newest Apple TV features two major upgrades. It boasts an A12 Bionic processor that boosts graphics performance, video decoding, and audio processing and delivers high frame rate HDR with Dolby Vision. It also includes a new Apple TV remote. The overall build quality is better than before, but the biggest enhancements are a 5-way clickpad, mute button, and dedicated power button that works for your TV, receiver, and Apple TV.

4-Pack Apple Airtags for $87.99

The Apple Airtag is a small coin shaped device that you can put in your wallet or attach to your phones, keys, remote, or anything small enough to be easily misplaced. It works as a little WiFi keyfinder that helps you locate your lost objects by pinging the exact location to your iPhone. In my personal experience, it works more reliably than the Tile keyfinder and at a longer range, too. This is a nice gift for a dad who already has an iPhone, especially if he tends to lose his small essentials around the house.

New Apple AirPods Pro Noise-Cancelling Earbuds

New MagSafe Model

Apple AirPods Pro Noise-Cancelling Earbuds

If you regret not picking the Airpods Pro up on Black Friday, here’s your chance to get it today at the same price. This is the newest generation model with the MagSafe compatible wireless charger. The AirPods Pro is considered one of the best noise-cancelling in-ear headphones you can get, especially for under $200. The noise cancellation is considered to be even better than the Bose Quietcomfort because of the natural noise isolating design of the in-ear earbuds. If isolation and sound quality are of utmost important to you, then it’s easily worth the upgrade over the AirPods 3.

Apple AirPods 2 for $99.99

Pick up a pair of Apple AirPods 2 wireless earbuds for the lowest price we’ve ever seen. These are the newer 2nd generation model. It includes a charging case that you plug in via USB Type-C. Honestly, the “wireless charging case” that you can upgrade to for an extra $60 is definitely not worth the price; very few people actually have an inductive charger, and the wireless charging rate is painfully slow.

$120 Off Apple AirPods Max Headphones

Not everyone can afford Apple’s best AirPods, but for those who can, they’ll be treated to a $95 discount from Amazon, making this the lowest price we’ve ever seen. Obviously the sound quality on these AirPods Max headphones are phenomenal, but what really takes the cake is the build quality. There are no other headphones in its price range that is built as well as the AirPods Max. They are literally a work of art.

$70 Off the Apple Watch Series 7

$50 Off the Apple Watch SE

The Series 7 is Apple’s latest and greatest watch. The biggest upgrade the Series 7 has over the Series 6 is the display. It has the same always-on Retina display, but it’s 20% bigger and features a more crack-resistant front crystal screen. It also adds on even more health-related features, like measuring your blood oxygen or taking an ECG. It’s inarguably the best smartwatch on the market right now. If you don’t need the health related features, you can save $100 and go with the Apple Watch SE instead. Despite the low price tag, this watch is still big on features, such as a large Retina OLED display, 2x faster CPU than the Series 3, heart rate monitoring, GPS, swimproof design, haptic feedback, and more.

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond for $29.99

Remember Pokemon Diamond and Pearl? Well, if you’re nostalgic for the Sinnoh region and all of its unique creatures, you can grab the remake, Pokemon Brilliant Diamond, for just $29.99 today. 40% Off Elden Ring Official Strategy Guides Preorder

Out July 29

Elden Ring Official Strategy Guides (Volumes 1 and 2)

There’s no question that Elden Ring is a difficult game, so don’t feel bad if you find yourself struggling. Fortunately, you can get a little help in the form of FromSoftware’s official Elden Ring strategy guide that comes out next month. It’s comprised of two volumes, each unveiling secrets, tips, and maps of everything that Elden Ring has to offer. Even if you’ve got this game down pat, you might want to pick up these books simply to learn more about the lore and enjoy the canon artwork. These books are normally $49.99, but today they’re only $29.99, a whopping 40% off discount.

Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3080 GPU for $799.99

These are easily the best prices we’ve seen for an RTX 3080 video card since launch. At this price point, the RTX 3080 is a better value than the 3080 Ti, which costs at least $250 more at reputable vendors. The performance gap between the 3080 and 3080 Ti is about 3%, hardly noticeable. The 3080 is significantly more powerful than the previous generation’s flagship RTX 2080 SUPER. This is the card you want to get if you plan to game at 4K.

Amazon Deal: Buy 2, Get 1 Free on Video Games, Books, Board Games, Toys, and More

This is a pretty huge deal, as it includes brand new titles like Elden Ring, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, and LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. Amazon is also running that same deal on books, which will let you get various D&D books bundled up, video game art books and tons of other great novels.

PS5, Xbox Series X

Tiny Tina’s Wonderland Next Level Edition

Ghostwire: Tokyo (PS5) for $29.99

Ghostwire: Tokyo was released at the end of March of this year. We’re less than 3 months since the release and already this game has been marked down by 50% off. Despite the steep price drop, this is actually a solid paranormal action-adventure game, with slick presentation and gorgeous visuals, a fun and fast-paced combat system, and an interesting story and cast. In my opinion, it’s definitely worth the $30 price tag.

This TCL TV offers solid picture quality without burning a hole in your wallet, and it even has built-in Roku smart TV functionality. It might not look as good as a $1500 TV, but you could fund the rest of your home entertainment or gaming system with the amount you just saved.

Lenovo Legion 5 Pro 16″ AMD Ryzen 7 5800H RTX 3070 Gaming Laptop with 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD

Walmart is offering an outstanding deal for a powerful gaming laptop from Lenovo. The RTX 3070 found in this laptop has a TDP rating of 140W. That is the maximum TDP rating you’ll find for a mobile RTX 3070 graphics card, meaning this is the one of the most powerful RTX 3070 gaming laptops you can get. Higher TDP means more power is supplied to the graphics card, and that directly equates to better performance in games.

Players can now update DualSense PS5 controllers directly on PC

If you’re a PlayStation 5 owner, you likely know the hassle of having to connect to your console in order to update the firmware for your DualSense controller. It’s especially cumbersome if you happen to be a PC gamer who prefers the feel of the DualSense to that of keyboard and mouse.

Starting today, that’s no longer an issue, as Sony Interactive Entertainment announced Wednesday that PC players will now be able to update the firmware of their DualSense wireless controllers using Windows 11 and “select Windows 10 devices,” without needing to connect to a PS5.

In a page dedicated to the announcement, Sony details the steps that players will have to take in order to update their controllers through their Windows PC, including downloading Sony’s firmware updater app and connecting their wireless controller using a USB cable.

Players will be periodically notified of new firmware updates and prompted to update their controllers to the latest version via the firmware app.

I was wrong about the PS5 DualSense controller, and I couldn’t be happier

It’s never easy to eat a slice of humble pie, but I’m happy to admit I was wrong about the PS5 DualSense controller. Sony’s innovative new pad is comfortably my favorite aspect of the PlayStation 5 – by some distance. But I’m still kind of shocked that developers have embraced it so readily.

You see, I was convinced that the majority of the DualSense controller’s fancy features would be overlooked. And with good reason. There’s been a clear pattern in previous console generations where third-party developers, particularly on multiplatform games, simply choose to ignore specific console features to save time and money.

After all, the PS3’s Sixaxis accelerometer, which is still present in the DualSense, was barely used outside a handful of games. On PS4, the DualShock’s touchpad essentially became a giant oversized menu button a few months into the generation. Nintendo Switch’s HD Rumble was all but ignored after 1-2-Switch released, and on Xbox One, the controller’s impulse triggers were criminally overlooked for years, something that’s thankfully been rectified on Xbox Series X.

I was confident, then, that we’d only see Sony’s first-party studios spending the time to get the most out of the DualSense’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers – but I’m delighted that’s not been the case. Far from it.

Super support

Practically every game on the PS5 includes some sort of DualSense implementation, and it’s yet to feel like a gimmick to me. Yes, it can often be subtle, but the DualSense’s features make a tangible difference to my overall enjoyment whenever I play games on PS5. I love the satisfying feedback you get every time you fire a gun in Call of Duty: Vanguard or how you can feel Jesse Faden’s footsteps in Control as you move around. It’s just something I really miss when playing on other consoles.

When it comes to Sony’s first-party output, Astro’s Playroom, Returnal, and Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut are prime examples of just how fantastic the DualSense controller can be – and those games would be worse off without the magic found inside Sony’s pad. But still, I never expected to see third-party developers rally behind the DualSense so strongly.

Sensual feelings

So why, then, has the DualSense seen such great support? Well, we already know that Sony has made it easier for studios to implement features like haptic feedback thanks to a variety of presets. But I think what’s clear to developers (and gamers) is that the DualSense genuinely adds an extra dimension to the feel of a game that’s worth exploring.

I’ve found myself picking up several third-party games on PS5 simply because of the promise of DualSense implementation, as it’s a unique selling point over the competition.

If you’ve yet to feel the magic of the DualSense first hand, please start with Astro’s Playroom. Feeling the sensation of skating across ice, firing a machine gun, or jumping into a pool of water for the very first time is one of those gaming moments that will stay with you forever – like when you first struck a tennis ball in Wii Sports or saw a game running in HD resolution (hey, Call of Duty 2).

The fact that developers are continuing to utilize the PS5 DualSense controller’s features so readily proves that haptic feedback and adaptive triggers are a substantial addition to gaming. And I sincerely hope they make the jump to future PlayStation consoles.

It’s time to get a purple PS5 DualSense controller (if you’re into it)

The PlayStation Direct online store is selling Galactic Purple DualSense controllers today, ahead of a wide release on February 11

Sony recently announced a new wave of colors for PS5’s DualSense controllers, and if you’re looking for something with extra flair, the time has come. While the Nova Pink and Starlight Blue controllers are available at retailers like Amazon, today’s the day for my fellow Galactic Purple admirers — that colorway is in stock “early” if you buy directly from PlayStation. Otherwise, it’s a few more weeks before the wide release on Feb. 11.

Anytime we can recapture a bit of the “nothing is off the table!” energy from the Nintendo 64 days, I’m here for it. That said, $75 sure feels steep for a gamepad, even a nice one.

As someone who already has two white controllers and cannot possibly justify getting another DualSense just because I prefer a more vibrant look, I am jealous of anyone who’s in the market for a purple, blue, or pink DualSense controller — they really pop!

Informally, I feel like purple is the crowd favorite, but I’d be curious to see a breakdown once the dust settles. Maybe Midnight Black is all you ever wanted. It’ll age well!

While I can see a lot of PS5 owners eventually picking up a spare controller (whether that’s willingly or begrudgingly) to facilitate co-op play, I wonder how many people will feel the urge to get an alternate console cover — red and black will be in stock on January 21, by the way. I’m not inherently against the idea for ~aesthetics~ reasons, but I also don’t want to swap out the parts and then have to deal with finding a safe home for the original white cover. Things got real funky with loose Xbox 360 faceplates, you know?

To everyone groaning at this article amid struggles to even find a PS5, period: I feel you.
