Dr. Dre Slams Marjorie Taylor Greene for Video Using ‘Still D.R.E.’ – Rolling Stone

Dr. Dre and his legal team have taken action against Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene after she used the “Still D.R.E.” instrumental in a self-promotional video shared Monday, Jan. 9.

The objectively goofy clip pairs the “Still D.R.E.” beat — which Dre produced with Mel-Man and Scott Storch —with some slo-mo clips of Greene not exactly working hard but walking around the halls of Congress. There’s also some footage of Greene taking a phone call from “DT” (yeesh) and celebrating the end of Kevin McCarthy’s abject humiliation when he was finally elected Speaker of the House on the 15th try.

After the video popped up on Twitter, Dr. Dre’s lawyers issued a letter, obtained by Rolling Stone, accusing her of “wrongfully exploiting this work through the various social media outlets to promote your divisive and hateful political agenda.”  The letter added that Dre (real name Andre Young) “has not, and will never, grant you permission not broadcast or disseminate any of his music.”

After claiming the use of “Still D.R.E” in the clip constituted copyright infringement, the letter continued, “One might expect that, as a member of Congress, you would have a passing familiarity with the laws of our country. It’s possible, though, that laws governing intellectual property are a little too arcane and insufficiently populist for you to really have spent much time on. We’re writing because we think an actual lawmaker should be making laws not breaking laws, especially those embodied in the constitution by the founding fathers.”

Dre’s lawyers then demanded that Greene “cease and desist from any further unauthorized use of” the musician’s work. It also requested that Greene confirm she’s “compiled with these demands” before Jan. 11 at 5 p.m. ET

It doesn’t appear that Dre’s team had to wait that long: As of publication, the video has been removed from Greene’s Twitter account, with a message reading, “This media has been disabled in response to a report by the copyright owner.” (Mediaite has preserved a copy for those willing to subject themselves.)

Trending

In a statement first shared with TMZ, Greene claimed she was locked out of her Twitter as a result of the complaint — though at 3:50 p.m. she was able to post a screen grab of her statement.

Addressing Dre, Greene said, “While I appreciate the creative chord progression, I would never play your words of violence against women and police officers, and your glorification of the thug life and drugs.”

Lawyers for Dr. Dre tell Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene to stop using his music

Lawyers for rap legend Dr. Dre are demanding that Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene stop his using his music, after the controversial politician used the hit “Still D.R.E.”

“I don’t license my music to politicians, especially someone as divisive and hateful as this one,” Dre, who was born Andre Young, said in a statement.

Greene, who represents a district in northeast Georgia, has promoted the far-right and baseless conspiracy theory QAnon, and in February 2022 she spoke at a white nationalist event.

In December she said she would have “won” the Jan. 6 Capitol attack if she had planned it with former Trump aide Steve Bannon, which earned a rebuke from the White House as well as Democratic lawmakers.

The letter from Dre’s attorney, Howard King, dated Monday, demands that the Greene immediately cease and desist from using Dre’s music. The letter says she has been using it on social media.

“One might expect that, as a member of Congress, you would have a passing familiarity with the laws of our country. It’s possible, though, that laws governing intellectual property are a little too arcane and insufficiently populist for you to really have spent much time on,” the letter reads. “We’re writing because we think an actual lawmaker should be making laws not breaking laws, especially those embodied in the constitution by the founding fathers.”

Music publication Rolling Stone reported that the recognizable “Still D.R.E.” beat was used in a video posted to Twitter, which appears to have since been removed.

A spokesperson for Greene on Monday sent a response from the Congress member to Dr. Dre that read: “While I appreciate the creative chord progression, I would never play your words of violence against women and police officers, and your glorification of the thug life and drugs.”

Rihanna Super Bowl Announcement Supported by Dr. Dre: ‘Can’t Wait’

Today is officially Rihanna’s day, with fans of the R&B singee celebrating her confirmed return to the live music stage for the Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show in Feb. 2023.

Among those looking forward to witnessing Rihanna’s Halftime takeover is Dr. Dre, who gave an award-winning performance at the Super Bowl this year alongside Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar and 50 Cent.

“Oh, my God. Let me tell you something, man. I actually just got the news that Rihanna’s going to do [the Halftime Show] and I’m a super fan of Rihanna,” he said during an interview with Ebro Darden on Apple Music 1. “I can’t wait to see what she’s going to do.”

Rihanna sneakily confirmed to the world that she would be headlining the LVII Halftime Show with a picture of an NFL-branded football on her Instagram. Roc Nation followed shortly after, officially confirming their participation as the strategic entertainment advisors of Rihanna’s live performance.

Dre continued, “I just like her and what she does and her get down and how she approaches her artistry and the whole nine. It’s fantastic.” He also commented that Rihanna “has the opportunity to really blow us away,” before adding, “I know we set the bar extremely high.”

He also made sure to give Rihanna a few pointers ahead of the performance planning: “Put the right people around you and have fun. That’s basically what it is — making sure you have the right creative people around you.”

Reflecting on his 2022 Super Bowl performance, Dre admitted that he was “extremely nervous,” but when it came down to it, it was “the preparation and making sure you have the right people around you” that made the show.

“All of these people came through for me and everybody was extremely enthusiastic about the show. We had a good time, although it’s a lot of things and a lot of people you have to depend on,” he explained. “So it is an extreme amount of pressure, but it’s fun at the same time. When it’s done, it’s like goosebumps, bro. I got goosebumps, especially from the reaction that we got from the show, and especially being able to do the show with all of my friends.”

Eminem Blasts Pete Davidson in ‘Forgot About Dre’ Video Parody – Billboard

Eminem is fed up with Pete Davidson‘s rap music video parodies.

During the season 47 finale of Saturday Night Live on May 21, Marshall Mathers made another memorable cameo in a musical sketch paying tribute to longtime show producer Lorne Michaels. In the cut-for-time skit, titled “Forgot About Lorne,” Davidson raps about Lorne’s accomplishments over the beat from Dr. Dre‘s 1999 hit “Forgot About Dre,” featuring Eminem.

In the setup for the parody, Davidson — who made his final appearance on SNL after eight seasons — is approached on set by host Natasha Lyonne, who tells him that Lorne is depressed because he has always wanted to appear in a music video alongside the 28-year-old comedian.

“That guy has literally done everything for me, so I’m going to pay him back by doing this rap video exactly the way he wrote it,” Davidson tells Lyonne, holding a crumpled up script found in the garbage.

The rap then video begins with Davidson dressed as Michaels, surrounded by shelves of golden award statues, and segues to the comic dressed as himself, spitting lyrics about the SNL creator’s influence in launching the careers of such comedy greats as John Belushi, Chris Farley, Dan Aykroyd and Will Ferrell.

“So what do you say about a comedy great/ Been doing it himself for half a century straight,” Davidson raps, impersonating Eminem’s rapid-fire verse on “Forgot About Dre.” “Wanna talk about all the crazy people he made/ Every single decade has ridiculous names.”

Davidson’s flow is interrupted by Eminem himself, who shouts at the King of Staten Island star from a nearby camera on the set. Obviously annoyed, the superstar rapper then begins to grill Davidson about why he’s doing yet another hip-hop video parody.

“It’s another parody, it’s like another tribute or something?” Em asks, to which Davidson responds that it’s the third one. (The SNL star has previously starred in spoofs of Eminem’s 2002 hit “Without Me” and his 2000 classic “Stan.”)

“I would just stop,” Em continues. “Yeah, they all suck … Just please, stop … It’s really bad.” Davidson tries to explain that the parodies are meant to pay tribute to Mathers’ music, but the rapper isn’t having any of it. “Pete, don’t f—ing do it again,” Eminem says, pointing his finger at Davidson.

The comedian then looks off to a character playing Michaels and yells, “You blew it!”

Dr. Dre talks Eminem taking a knee at Super Bowl

The uber producer, who performed along with Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar Sunday, told TMZ there was no problem with Eminem taking a knee during the show.

The gesture was made famous by former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick as an act of protest against police brutality and racial discrimination and there had been a report that the NFL requested that Eminem not do it.

“Em taking a knee that was Em doing that on his own,” Dr. Dre said of his protegee. “And there was no problem with that.”

In a statement to CNN Sunday, the NFL said they had no issue with the rapper kneeling.

“We watched all elements of the show during multiple rehearsals this week and were aware that Eminem was going to do that,” the statement read. “A player or coach could have taken a knee and there would have been no repercussions so there was no reason to tell an artist she or he could not do so.”

Dr. Dre told TMZ there were minor changes made by the NFL, including removing a reference to gangs in one of Lamar’s songs, which Dre said was “no big deal.”

“All in all we came in, everybody was professional, everybody was on time,” he said. “Everybody really felt the magnitude of what this thing was and what we were going to be able to accomplish. It was a fantastic experience.”

It marked the first time hip-hop artists were the featured performers for NFL’s biggest night.

Rewatch the incredible Super Bowl halftime show with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Eminem

Dr. Dre at the Super Bowl halftime show.

Peacock

The Super Bowl half-time show always features superstars, but this year’s show took things up a notch.

Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Kendrick Lamar and Dr. Dre all performed at at the Super Bowl half-time show — a production so ridiculous stacked it warranted its own, equally ridiculous trailer. They even brought 50 Cent as a surprise, which absolutely ruled.

He was upside down.

Anyway, the show itself? It was a pitch perfect exercise in nostalgia. Given the Super Bowl took place in California, at the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles to be precise, it made sense to round up the old gang and play a West Coast rap inspired show. As a 40 year old man I was the exact perfect demographic for this show and I loved it.

You can and should rewatch it here.

People were losing it as they rightly should have.

SaveRedDeadOnline:Players Fed Up With Rockstar’s Lack Of Content

Screenshot: Rockstar Games

The last major update for Red Dead Online was released in July 2021. Since then, the game has received no major content updates. As 2022 starts, RDO fans have become fed up with the lack of content and communication from Rockstar and have collectively started the #SaveRedDeadOnline campaign to… well, save Red Dead Online.

Blood Money was the last major content update Red Dead Online received and that was all the way back on July 13, 2021. And calling that a major update is a bit generous, as Blood Money mainly added some new, but not entirely unique missions to the game and a new currency. It was a fine update, but when compared to recent GTA Online updates, which have added loads of content and featured big names like Dr. Dre, it’s clear one Rockstar game is more loved than the other.

This has, as you might expect, upset Red Dead Online players who feel like Rockstar is letting the game die in spite of all the potential it has to be something big and special.

All of this came to a boil on January 6, when Rockstar announced a boring month-long event in Red Dead Online that didn’t add any new content, but instead increased payouts on old missions and activities. This dull event seemed to be “too little for too long” and in response, a large number of players began tweeting their frustration and anger using the #SaveRedDeadOnline hashtag.

Now, days later, the hashtag continues to trend on Twitter and more and more players continue to share stories of how much they enjoyed playing the game and how they now feel abandoned by Rockstar.

Of course, some have used the hashtag and the growing frustration with Rockstar to lash out at devs and others on social media, pushing some RDO fans to fight back and remind players to not be abusive assholes towards the people making the game or players who still enjoy it.

While I understand that making games is hard and during the era of covid has only gotten harder, I also get the frustration of these players.

I’ve enjoyed playing RDO, but haven’t touched the game much in the last few months because there just isn’t much bringing me back. Meanwhile, GTA Online continues (even during covid) to receive massive and fantastic updates, adding new features, missions, events, vehicles, music, and more every five to six months. And sadly, for fans of RDO, that just hasn’t been the case for the online western for years now.

For many, it’s not even just a demand for more content updates, but a call for more communication from the publisher and developer behind RDO, GTA V, and more. Of course, Rockstar Games hasn’t responded to the campaign yet.

GTA V Was The Most Popular Game On Twitch In 2021 Despite Age

Get outta here, can’t you see I’m dominating Twitch right now!
Image: Rockstar Games

How does Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto V, a game that came out at the beginning of the last console generation, still manage to garner so many eyeballs? It’s become as ubiquitous as Bethesda Softworks’ Skyrim, with Stream Element’s end of the year Twitch review reporting that viewers watched 2.1 billion hours of gameplay. That’s wild, despite the newly-released content.

The only thing that’s been viewed more than GTA V on the streaming platform falls in the casual Just Chatting category, where folks watched 3.1 billion hours of people shooting the shit. Right after GTA V is League of Legends with 1.8 billion hours watched, followed by people watching one billion hours of Fortnite. The full list can be seen in the image below.

What makes this statistic about GTA V’s longevity so wild are the specifics: it came out in September 2013 for the last console generation (PS4 and Xbox One) and was around for the generation before that (PS3 and Xbox 360). This game has legs! You can tell by how often Rockstar updates the game’s Online mode, which just got a new batch of story missions and an expansion to its radio stations. Some updates, like Tuners, emphasize coming together with other players for things like car meets. More than GTA Online, though, what’s really keeping the game running on the livestreaming platform in particular is its thriving role-playing community. There are dedicated servers like the exclusive NoPixel one where popular streamers like xQc, live out their fantasies as a cop or doctor or other random characters. The latest server update this year introduced Cyberpunk 2077’s Johnny Silverhand.

Yeah, GTA V is hella old, but it’s understandable why so many tune in to watch it. While Twitch doesn’t delineate between GTA V and GTA Online, it’s evident from viewing the category that people are absolutely enamored with the online portion. There’s so much emergent gameplay in GTA Online that no one mission will play out the same way between people. Though the story mode is linear in how events unfold, the spontaneity of the game’s design is probably what brings people back to GTA V and Online.

Despite being heavily watched on Twitch, Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto series has also seen some bumps in the road this year. There were some positives, such as The Contract story content, but GTA The Trilogy: Definitive Edition was a botched release, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S ports were delayed, and there’s still no word on GTA 6.

At least Lamar is still out here roasting Franklin in GTA Online. That’s good.
