A new study casts doubt on oxytocin’s role as a ‘love hormone’

SCOTT SIMON, HOST:

It’s known as the love hormone, but a new study suggests that label is misleading. NPR’s Jon Hamilton reports on what scientists are learning about oxytocin.

JON HAMILTON, BYLINE: When romance is in the air, a couple’s oxytocin levels rise. That’s true for both people and prairie voles, mouse-like rodents that mate for life and are often used to study human behavior. Dr. Dev Manoli, a psychiatrist at the University of California, San Francisco, says prairie vole couples share a nest and even co-parent.

DEV MANOLI: One of the behaviors that’s really, you know, sort of the most adorable is this huddling behavior, just sort of huddling with each other. They’ll sometimes groom. Sometimes they just fall asleep because it’s very calming. And that’s very specific to the pair-bonded partner.

HAMILTON: Decades of research has suggested that oxytocin is critical to that sort of behavior. So Manoli and a team of scientists did an experiment designed to disrupt pair bonding. They removed fertilized eggs from female prairie voles and edited the genes to neutralize the effects of oxytocin. After that, Manoli says, they let the cells grow.

MANOLI: So we culture them for a few days and then put them into what’s called a pseudo-pregnant female.

HAMILTON: An animal that’s hormonally ready to carry an embryo. The result was pups that appeared normal. And when these pups grew up, they formed pair bonds just like other prairie voles. Manoli says females were even able to produce milk for their offspring, a process usually mediated by oxytocin.

MANOLI: We were shocked because that was really, really not what we expected. And, you know, my initial response was, OK, we have to do this three more times because we need to be sure that this is 100% real. But also, what’s going on?

HAMILTON: Repeated experiments confirmed the finding, which appears in the journal Neuron. Manoli says it’s still a mystery how pair bonding occurs in the absence of oxytocin. But he says the study makes one thing clear.

MANOLI: Because of evolution, the parts of the brain and the circuitry that are responsible for pair bond formation don’t really rely on oxytocin. They don’t need it.

HAMILTON: In other words, Manoli says…

MANOLI: Oxytocin might be “Love Potion No. 9,” but one through eight are still in play, right? There’s more there than that one entry point.

HAMILTON: Manoli says in retrospect, the result makes sense because pair bonding is essential to a prairie vole’s survival, and evolution tends to favor redundant systems for critical behaviors. He says the result also may help explain why giving oxytocin to children with autism spectrum disorder doesn’t reliably improve their social functioning.

MANOLI: There’s not a single pathway, but rather these complex behaviors have really complicated genetics and complicated neural mechanisms.

HAMILTON: Many scientists who study oxytocin say they’re uncomfortable with the term love hormone. Sue Carter of the University of Virginia and Indiana University helped discover the link between oxytocin and monogamy in prairie voles. But she says she never assumed the hormone was acting alone.

SUE CARTER: The process of forming a secure social bond lasting for a very long period of time is too important to restrict to a single molecule.

HAMILTON: Carter says a different molecule called vasopressin also contributes to social bonding, and there may be others, she says, though she believes oxytocin is the major player.

CARTER: We can live without fine clothing. We can even live without too much physical protection. But we cannot live without love.

HAMILTON: Which may be the reason we can love without oxytocin.

Future of America’s oldest steakhouse, Delmonico’s, closed for the last three years in doubt

The future of Delmonico’s, the oldest steakhouse in the country which had been in operation since 1837 until the pandemic, appears to be at stake.

The 186-year-old restaurant, set in the Financial District, also serves as the exterior shots for The Continental Hotel in the John Wick series of films and has been closed for nearly three years.

However, there’s currently a dispute with two parties now claiming to have the right to reopen the restaurant set in the Financial District.

The Continental is John Wick’s most iconic location: a hotel for assassins where they can drink scotch, and make eyes at other assassins while they take care of ‘business’ in the heart of the Financial District.

One of Manhattan’s oldest restaurants, Delmonico’s, is in the process of returning to the Financial District after being closed for nearly three years

When it was open the restaurant was famous for its innovative American dishes including eggs benedict, Manhattan clam chowder and the famous Delmonico steak, pictured above

When it was open the restaurant was famous for its innovative American dishes including eggs benedict, Manhattan clam chowder, and the famous Delmonico ribeye steak.

The dispute centers around who owns the rights to the Delmonico’s name and its use.

A press release sent out last week stated how the restaurant would return in the fall of 2023 but an Instagram post on Delmonico’s Instagram account alleged how the ‘recent reports that we will re-open at 56 Beaver Street are false.

‘It has come to our attention that former associates have been misrepresenting themselves to the media as owners of Delmonico’s,’ the post stated.

One family is stating they have the right to use the trademarked name while a second party claims announcing any kind of reopening is a violation of trademark rights.

Delmonico’s shut their doors and ‘suspended all operations’ as part of the lockdown on March 18, 2020. This image shows cooks preparing food at Delmonico’s in 1902

The Grgurevs, who used to operate the restaurant and currently run the Delmonico’s Instagram account, claim that new leaseholders of the 56 Beaver Street location are using the Delmonico’s name in bad faith, without their involvement and are not involved in the restaurant’s relaunch.

The Grgurevs are also in the process of filing a lawsuit against the new operators.

The disagreement centers on a legal ruling in spring 2021 in which brothers Ferdo and Omer Grgurev managed to secure full ownership of the location, but were barred from operating a Delmonico’s restaurant or any other restaurant within one mile until March 2023.

Yet, the Grgurevs have stated that they also have still the right to still operate the restaurant under the Delmonico’s name.

In the meantime, Dennis Turcinovic and Joseph Licul, who are involved in another restaurant, are now claiming to be the new owners of the property as of January 1, 2023, and are not involved in any ongoing lawsuit with the previous owners.

Delmonico’s was among eateries and bars across the country that were forced to close during the coronavirus lockdown. They have never reopened

A representative for Turcinovic told Eater how he and Licul signed a new 15-year lease with Time Equities and deny any claims that might suggest they are not the legitimate owners.

They have announced plans to remove any website that suggests otherwise and are planning to launch new websites if the issue is not resolved.

But the Grgurev brothers state it is they who have the right to operate the restaurant under the Delmonico’s name with others barred from operating any Delmonico’s or another restaurant within one mile until March of this year.

In April 2022, the landlord, Time Equities, attempted to evict the restaurant, under the Grgurev family’s management, for alleged non-payment of almost $300,000 in rent and fees.

The Grgurev family denied the eviction claim and stated it was related to the landlord’s delay in repairing water damage in the building from Hurricane Ida in 2021.

By December 2022, the lease expired and the landlord did not renew it, Time Equities then signed the deal with Turcinovic and Licul, Grgurev’s former partners.

Michelle Grgurev, the daughter of Omer Grgurev, now says her family believes the landlord intentionally allowed the lease to expire so that it could be reissued to new tenants.

Russian missile that hit Dnipro apartment block was “no doubt” a Kh-22 missile, says Ukrainian Air Force Command

The Russian missile that hit an apartment block in Dnipro on Saturday was “no doubt” a Kh-22 missile, the Air Force Command of the Ukranian Armed forces said Sunday on its Facebook page.

“[A] Radar detected the approximate launch site, altitude, and flight speed. There is no doubt that it was an X-22 [Kh-22] missile,” it said.

“The Armed Forces of Ukraine lack the firepower capabilities for shooting down this type of missile. Since the beginning of Russia’s military aggression, more than 210 missiles of this type have been launched at the territory of Ukraine. None of them have been shot down by our air defense systems,” the post added.

Yurii Ihnat, spokesman for the Ukrainian air force, said the Kh-22 “was fired from a Tu-22M3 long-range bomber, launched from the area near Kursk and the Sea of Azov.”

“There were a total of five launches of these missiles,” Ihnat said.

Speaking of Saturday’s attack, Ihnat said: “They hit with such a missile a densely populated city with people, women, children. There is no explanation and justification for this terrorist act.”

Originally designed as an anti-ship missile, the Kh-22 is an older and less accurate weapon than most modern missiles. But Western analysts say it is only accurate to a radius of about 500 meters (about 1,600 feet).

CNN reported last June that it was also a Kh-22 that hit a shopping center in Kremenchuk in central Ukraine.

The Russian Defense Ministry said the target in June was a facility that repaired military vehicles, which was several hundred meters from the shopping center. At least 18 people were killed in that attack.

The death toll from the Russian missile strike on an apartment block in Dnipro rose to 20 on Sunday, the day after missiles and explosions were heard across the country.

At least 73 people were wounded in the attack on the nine-story apartment building, including four who are in critical condition, Valentyn Reznichenko, the head of the Dnipropetrovsk regional military administration said.
