Benzema, Putellas win Ballon d’Or awards for best players in the world

  • Real Madrid’s Frenchman Benzema voted best men’s player
  • Barca’s Spain midfielder Putellas picks up women’s award
  • pep Guardiola’s Manchester City chosen as Best Club

PARIS, Oct 17 (Reuters) – Real Madrid’s France forward Karim Benzema won the 2022 Ballon d’Or award for the best men’s player in the world on Monday, while Barcelona’s Spain midfielder Alexia Putellas won the women’s award for a second time.

Benzema, who played a pivotal role in Real’s run to the Champions League title last season, is the first French player to win the trophy since Zinedine Zidane in 1998 and the fifth after Raymond Kopa, Michel Platini and Jean-Pierre Papin.

“This prize in front of me makes me really proud. When I was small, it was a childhood dream, I never gave up… Anything is possible,” Benzema said on stage at the ceremony.

“There was a difficult period when I wasn’t in the French team but I never gave up. I’m really proud of my journey here. It wasn’t easy, it was a difficult time for my family as well.”

Benzema beat Poland’s Robert Lewandowski, Sadio Mane of Senegal and Belgium’s Kevin De Bruyne after Argentina’s Lionel Messi won the award for a record seventh time last year.

Benzema had a stellar season with Real, scoring 44 goals in 46 games in all competitions as he helped guide them to a LaLiga and Champions League double. His 15 goals in the Champions League guided Real to a record-extending 14th title.

Real made remarkable comebacks from losing positions in the last-16, quarter-finals and semi-finals against Paris St Germain, Chelsea and Manchester City respectively — with Benzema scoring in each of the second legs.

The highlight of their European campaign was the 3-1 win in the second leg against PSG when the Spanish club were 2-0 down on aggregate, with Benzema grabbing a 17-minute hat-trick in the second half to stun the Ligue 1 side.

PUTELLAS WINS AGAIN

Spanish international Putellas won the women’s Ballon d’Or for a second straight year, beating England’s European Championship winner Beth Mead and Australia’s Sam Kerr.

Putellas, who was also named FIFA Best Women’s Player earlier this year, was top scorer in the Champions League last season with 11 goals and scored 18 in the Primera Division.

The 28-year-old missed the Euros for Spain, however, after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury on the eve of the tournament in England.

Real’s Thibaut Courtois won the Lev Yashin award for the best goalkeeper last season, with the towering shot stopper making nine saves in the final to keep a clean sheet against Liverpool in a 1-0 victory in Paris.

However, the teams in the Champions League final lost out on the Best Club award, which went to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City who won a fourth Premier League title in five years.

Barca’s 18-year-old midfielder Gavi picked up the Kopa Trophy for the best under-21 player, while Bayern Munich forward Sadio Mane won the inaugural Socrates award, with the Senegal international recognised for his humanitarian efforts.

Lewandowski did not go home empty handed either as he picked up the Gerd Muller Trophy for the best striker after scoring 50 goals in all competitions for Bayern last season.

Alexia Putellas wins Women’s Ballon d’Or again

The 2022 Ballon d’Or award ceremony is finally here, with the long-awaited award of the prestigious prize upon us for yet another season, but with a twist. This will be the first time that the award is given out based on the merits of the last season of football, as opposed to the last calendar year. The Ballon d’Or award ceremony will get underway at 19:30 BST, at Theatre du Chatelet in Paris.

Fittingly, being in the French capital, Karim Benzema is the strong favourite although he faces competition from the likes of Robert Lewandowski and Kylian Mbappe also in the mix. It will be the first time since 2005 that seven-time winner Leo Messi is not one of the candidates, while Cristiano Ronaldo is among the list but is not considered to have a chance of winning it.

The nominees parade on the red carpet at the 2022 Ballon d’Or gala

The stars are already gathering inside the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris after making their way through the red carpet. The likes of Kevin de Bruyne and Sadio Mane are present, as is the favourite Karim Benzema.

All the spotlights are on Karim Benzema. There are many, very many, who believe that the Real Madrid player will be the winner of the Ballon d’Or at this Monday’s gala.

If so, he would become the fifth Frenchman to win it after Kopa, Platini, Papin and Zidane. The last Frenchman to win it was the latter in 1998.

Star Of Palme d’Or Winner ‘Triangle Of Sadness’ – Deadline

Charlbi Dean, the South African model and actor who stars in the Palme d’Or-winning Triangle of Sadness and recurred on the CW’s Black Lightning, died Monday in New York City of an unexpected sudden illness. She was 32.

Deadline has confirmed her passing.

Until her co-starring role opposite Harris Dickinson and Woody Harrelson in the celebrated Ruben Östlund film, Dean was best known for playing Syonide, a recurring character she played for two seasons on The CW’s DC Comics-based series Black Lightning.

Other credits include the films Spud (2010), Death Race 3: Inferno (2013), Blood in the Water (2016), Don’t Sleep (2017) and Porthole (2018).

Triangle of Sadness is an official selection of the 2022 Toronto Film Festival and has been selected for the 2022 New York Film Festival. It’s set for an Oct. 7 theatrical release in the U.S.

In the film, Dean plays model Yaya, one of the guests invited aboard a superyacht that becomes the setting for chaotic developments.

Dean signed with UTA last January and was also repped by Silver Lining Entertainment.

Born on February 5, 1990 in Cape Town, Dean got her start in the 2010 South African boarding-school comedy Spud, starring John Cleese and Troye Sivan from writer-director Donovan Marsh. She reprised her role for the 2013 sequel and went on to appear in the 2010s films Blood in the Water, Don’t Sleep, An Interview with God and Porthole.

After guesting on a 2017 episode of CBS’ Sherlock Holmes drama Elementary, she was cast in the CW’s Black Lightning as Syonide, an orphan-turned-assassin who was trained by Tobias Whale (Marvin “Krondon” Jones III). Dean appeared in nine episodes of the series’ first two seasons, form the 2018 pilot to the first episodes of Season 2.

As a mode, she covered the South African editions of GQ and Elle in December 2008 and July 2010, respectively.

Additional information of her death and survivors was not immediately available.

Lionel Messi – Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema deserves to win Ballon d’Or

Real Madrid and France striker Karim Benzema deserves to win the Ballon d’Or this year after helping to guide his team to the Champions League title, said seven-times winner of the prestigious award Lionel Messi on Monday.

Benzema had the best season of his 13-year career at Real, scoring 44 goals with 15 assists in all competitions as they won a LaLiga-Champions League double.

– Ogden: Courtois inspires Madrid to glory by denying Liverpool
– Olley: Liverpool’s UCL final loss will test mental toughness

The 34-year-old topped the scoring charts in both competitions and netted hat tricks against Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea in the knockout stages to secure Real’s progress.

“There are no doubts; it’s very clear that Benzema had a spectacular year and ended up victorious in the Champions League,” Messi said on Argentine television.

“He was fundamental in all the matches from the round of 16 onwards. I think there is no doubt this year.”

The Ballon d’Or award for the best football player in the world will be presented on Oct. 17, with the nominees set to be revealed on Aug. 12.

The trophy will now be awarded on the basis of a regular season from August to July rather than a calendar year.

Real Madrid’s 1-0 win over Liverpool gave them their 14th European Cup triumph — twice as many as the next most successful team, AC Milan.

Benzema’s hat trick in the second leg eliminated PSG 3-2 on aggregate in the last 16, yet again preventing the French club from winning Europe’s elite club competition for the first time.

“The Real Madrid game killed us, me and everyone in the dressing room. We had a lot of hope. It makes me want to win again,” Messi added.

“But the best team doesn’t always win the Champions League. I don’t take credit away from Real Madrid; they weren’t the best in this competition and yet they beat everyone.”

Cannes Winners List: Palme d’Or in 2022 Goes to…

Full list: All the winners from the 75th Cannes Film Festival in one place.

Ruben Östlund won his second Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, for “Triangle of Sadness,” a satire of influencer culture and beauty’s ability to open doors that inspired uproarious laughter — and disgust. The Swedish director, who previously won the Palme for art-world sendup “The Square,” urged the audience to let out “a primal scream of happiness” following his acceptance of the award, which officially closed out the nearly two-week long event in Cannes, the 75th edition of the festival.

See the full winners list below.

Among the more eye-catching winners for cinephiles, Claire Denis won her first award from Cannes, with only the second film she’d ever had in Competition: “Stars at Noon” starring Margaret Qualley, who she said during her speech she’d discovered at Cannes when watching Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” three years ago. She shared the Grand Prix with “Close” by Lukas Dhont.

Best Director went to Park Chan-wook for “Decision to Leave,” which had been considered a top contender for the Palme in its own right.

Ties were all the rage at Cannes this year as the jury headed by Vincent Lindon, which also included Rebecca Hall, Deepika Padukone, Asghar Farhadi, Ladj Ly, Joachim Trier, and Jeff Nichols, ended up giving the Jury Prize ex aequo as well: to both “Eo” and “Le Otto Montagne.”

Cinephile favorite Song Kang Ho won Best Actor for Hirokazu Kore-eda’s “Broker,” while Zar Amir Ebrahimi won Best Actress for “Holy Spider.”

Forest Whitaker received an honorary Palme d’Or to kick off the festivities, and “Top Gun: Maverick” star Tom Cruise was also given an honorary Palme d’Or as part of a festival-spanning celebration of his career. And “The Worst Ones” and “Joyland” were the big winners in the Un Certain Regard competition. But that was the easy part.

When it came to the Main Competition, jurors had their work cut out for them. This year’s competition lineup included new work from legendary filmmakers (David Cronenberg and Denis), Cannes favorites (Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, Arnaud Desplechin), and exciting new voices (Dhont). Several past Palme d’Or recipients are competing, with some filmmakers even being two-time winners seeking a third trophy. But anything can happen on the final Saturday of Cannes, and since there can only be one Palme d’Or winner, it’s safe to expect the unexpected.

Cannes awards are notoriously polarizing (the 1999 Palme d’Or was still being re-litigated this week), and Vincent Lindon’s jury will likely have plenty to answer for at their press conference immediately following the ceremony.

Palme d’Or: “Triangle of Sadness” by Ruben Östlund

Grand Prix: “Close” by Lukas Dhont and “Stars at Noon” by Claire Denis

Special Prize for Cannes’ 75th anniversary: Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardennes, “Tori and Lokita”

Jury Prize: “Eo” and “Le Otto Montagne”

Best Actress: Zar Amir Ebrahimi, “Holy Spider”

Best Actor: Song Kang Ho, “Broker”

Best Director: Park Chan-wook, “Decision to Leave”

Best Screenplay: “Boy from Heaven”

Camera d’Or: “War Pony,” directed by Gina Gammell and Riley Keough
