Damar Hamlin wanted to raise $2,500 to get kids toys for Christmas. After his cardiac arrest on the field, his fans donated millions.
In the weeks leading up to his sudden collapse during a game in Cincinnati on Monday night, Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin was focused on raising money to give children from his hometown toys for Christmas. Within hours of Hamlin suffering cardiac arrest and going into critical condition, his fans donated millions to the campaign.
The fundraiser was created on GoFundMe on Dec. 14 to “positively impact children who have been hardest hit by the pandemic.” Donations made to the campaign are to help with the purchasing of toys for those children, according to the site, and toys were distributed on Dec. 22 to a day care center.
He set a goal to raise $2,500 for the initiative. It’s unclear to CBS News just how much money had been raised prior to the toy distribution, but according to CBS Pittsburgh, more than $600,000 was raised by 10:30 p.m. on Monday.
GoFundMe has verified the fundraiser, tweeting that he wanted “to help kids have a magical Christmas.”
“Following his injury on the field tonight, fans across the country are showing their support for him and his family by donating to his fundraiser,” the company said.
As of Tuesday evening, it’s raised more than $5 million, with many people donating thousands over the past few hours. Several people have made single donations between $1,000 and $5,500.

The flood of donations came shortly after the 24-year-old Pennsylvania native collapsed during the first quarter of the Bills’ game against the Cincinnati Bengals. During the first quarter of the game, Hamlin tackled Bengals receiver Tee Higgins. When Hamlin got up, he appeared to take a couple of steps before suddenly collapsing onto the field, where medical professionals treated him for about 10 minutes before putting him into an ambulance. The game was postponed soon thereafter.
Hours later, the Bills put out a statement on Twitter saying Hamlin had suffered cardiac arrest.
“His heartbeat was restored on the field and he was transferred to the UC Medical Center for further testing and treatment,” the team said. “He is currently sedated and listed in critical condition.”
An update on the fundraiser page that was added on Tuesday thanked supporters for donating to Hamlin’s initiative. It also said that the GoFundMe is “the only current fund” being used by Hamlin’s family.
“This fundraiser was initially established to support a toy drive for Damar’s community, sponsored by the Chasing M’s Foundation,” the update says. “However, it has received renewed support in light of Damar’s current battle and we can’t thank all of you enough. Your generosity and compassion mean the world to us.”
FTX’s Bankman-Fried donated almost $40M this political cycle. Here’s who benefited.
Sam Bankman-Fried, the disgraced founder of the cryptocurrency exchange FTX, was a prolific political donor, pumping about $40 million this cycle alone into campaign committees and other groups, mostly aligned with Democrats, federal records show.
His contributions are under scrutiny as federal prosecutors on Tuesday alleged that Bankman-Fried had broken campaign finance laws by sourcing donations from his related crypto hedge fund, Alameda Research, and falsely reporting them as originating from other people.
His largesse to Democratic causes was surpassed over the past two years only by that of George Soros, the liberal financier. Bankman-Fried has claimed that he gave just as much to GOP causes, but through nonprofit groups not required to disclose their donors. Much of the money Bankman-Fried gave went to super PACs. These groups, which can accept unlimited individual and corporate contributions, must remain formally separate from campaigns as they run ads or sponsor other communications supporting or opposing candidates.
Federal campaign filings show he gave a combined $7 million to the two main super PACs supporting Democratic candidates for Congress in the 2022 elections. He also gave to groups focused on voter turnout and, in certain cases, shelled out millions for highly specific races.
Bankman-Fried also provided 95 percent of funds for Protect Our Future, a fledgling Democratic-aligned super PAC that supported a wide range of candidates and causes. Its leaders described it as committed to principles of effective altruism, an approach to philanthropy that seeks to make use of data to allocate money effectively, in many cases to long-term threats. Among the causes championed by candidates backed by Protect Our Future was pandemic preparedness.
Protect Our Future spent more than $10 million backing an unsuccessful candidate in the Democratic primary for an open U.S. House seat in Oregon. The candidate, Carrick Flynn, is an adherent of the effective altruism philosophy said to have guided the PAC’s giving. (He lost the primary to state lawmaker Andrea Salinas, who won the general election.)
Bankman-Fried has acknowledged in interviews over the past several weeks that the philanthropy undertaken by companies, including his own, is often designed to elicit good PR.
His desire to spread his resources broadly is evident in the number of politicians he backed: He contributed to more than 60 federal candidates, including members of both parties representing all corners of the country. Unlike his donations to super PACs, Bankman-Fried ran up against limits in these contributions. Federal law says individual donors can give up to $2,900 directly to a candidate committee for each election — which means once in the primary and again in the general, for a maximum of $5,800 per cycle.
This analysis counts contributions and refunds from and to federal political committees disclosed as given or received by Bankman-Fried in reports filed with the FEC since 2020. This excludes contributions to joint fundraising and conduit committees to avoid counting the money again when those contributions were later transferred to campaigns and parties. This does not count money disclosed as given by other FTX employees, the company itself or any money given through groups that don’t disclose their donors.

Many in the crypto space have accused mainstream media of intentionally trying to water down the actions of FTX CEO Sam “SBF” Bankman-Fried, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who is on a self-proclaimed mission to position Twitter as “the most accurate source of information.”
While the world still overcomes the shock of FTX’s collapse and the realization that SBF had been misappropriating users’ funds and engaging in shady investment practices via its sister trading firm, Will Manidis, CEO of ScienceIO — a healthcare data platform — tweeted that SBF made one of the “highest ROI trades of all time” by donating $40 million to the right politicians, who he claims have allowed him to get away with stealing over $10 billion.

Musk responded to the tweet, alleging that the amount of money SBF actually donated to Democratic candidates was over $1 billion, which would be way more than the publicly disclosed amount of $40 million. SBF previously admitted to making “dark” donations to the Republican Party. Musk asked:
“His actual support of Dem elections is probably over $1B. The money went somewhere, so where did it go?”
Meanwhile, United States House Financial Services Committee Chair Maxine Waters, a Democrat, and ranking member Patrick McHenry, a Republican, have requested that SBF appear in an investigative hearing scheduled for Dec. 13.

This latest round of backlash against SBF comes shortly after he gave interviews during The New York Times‘ DealBook Summit and to Good Morning America.
During his so-called “apology tour,” SBF has been portraying himself as a victim and even received a round of applause at the end of his DealBook Summit appearance. According to Twitter user and developer Naomi, “Watching SBF’s interview is kind of like watching Casey Anthony’s documentary. They’re so mechanical, they’re so inauthentic in their delivery. If you feel any emotion, at all, it slows people down. The way it is expressed is a separate subjective matter.”

Tesla CEO and Twitter chief Elon Musk says that former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF) probably donated over $1 billion to support the Democratic Party, which would be a much larger sum than the number publicly disclosed. Many people slammed Musk for making accusations without providing proof. “This statement is so unbelievably irresponsible,” one commented.
Elon Musk Believes SBF Donated Over $1B to Democratic Party
Tesla CEO and Twitter chief Elon Musk believes that Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF), co-founder and former CEO of the collapsed cryptocurrency exchange FTX, donated much more than the publicly disclosed amount to support the Democratic Party in elections.
Bankman-Fried was the second largest donor to the Democratic Party, after billionaire George Soros, in the 2021-2022 election cycle. According to Opensecrets, he donated $39,884,256 to Democrats before FTX imploded and had to file for bankruptcy. An estimated one million customers and investors lost billions of dollars in the exchange collapse. FTX is currently being investigated for mishandling customer funds.
Musk’s statement was in response to a comment on Twitter stating that Bankman-Fried donating $40 million to avoid jail after stealing over $10 billion is one of the highest Return on Investment (ROI) trades of all time. Musk claimed that the $40 billion is just the publicly disclosed number, noting that Bankman-Fried’s actual election support of the Democratic Party is “probably” over $1 billion. “The money went somewhere, so where did it go?” the Tesla boss tweeted.
While his donations to the Democratic Party were public knowledge, Bankman-Fried claimed in an interview that he also donated a similar amount to the Republican Party. However, he said all his Republican donations were “dark.”
At the time of writing, Musk’s tweet has garnered over 4,500 comments and has been liked over 124,000 times. While some people agreed with the Tesla chief, many were shocked at Musk’s accusations, demanding that the billionaire provide proof to support his statement.
“This is literally misinformation,” one exclaimed. Another wrote: “[Musk] baselessly implying SBF broke federal election contribution laws.” A third opined: “Serious accusations by Elon Musk about POTUS accepting stolen funds to run for president.” Some people reminded Musk that Bankman-Fried already explained that he donated the same amount to Republicans. Twitter user Justin Higgins warned:
This statement is so unbelievably irresponsible. Musk has now made Twitter an explicitly anti-Democratic Party company. No sensible, corporation that wants solid relations with both parties on Capitol Hill will advertise on Twitter. I can’t see how Twitter ad $ returns…
Others simply questioned why SBF is not in jail yet. “We just all can do white-collar crimes and pay people off?” one asked. Many people emphasized that they want politicians to return “stolen” funds they received from the former FTX chief executive.
