Report: Dolphins “not expected” to pursue Tom Brady

Getty Images

Not long ago, we pointed out that signing with the Dolphins is “definitely on the table” for soon-to-be free agent Tom Brady. The feeling may not be mutual.

More accurately, it’s not “expected” to be mutual.

Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reports that the Dolphins “are not expected” to pursue Brady, in the event he decides to play in 2023. Schefter adds, citing unnamed sources, that the Dolphins are “committed” to Tua Tagovailoa.

It’s unclear why Schefter had to roll with unnamed sources for the proposition that the Dolphins are committed to Tua. The coach and the General Manager have said so publicly. (Also, Schefter reported two weeks ago that Tua is “expected” to be the starter in 2023. Like Siena once said to Costanza, “I heard you the first time.”)

As we said in response to the pro-Tua comments from the team, actions speak louder than words. If they’re truly committed, pick up his fifth-year option. Or sign him to a long-term deal. Until one of those things happen, the commitment isn’t worth the paper it’s not printed on.

Five weeks after suffering his latest concussion, Tua still isn’t cleared to play flag football, frolf, or whatever else the NFL plans to do this week in Las Vegas in lieu of two-hand touch in full pads. That seems to be the most important news regarding Tua. How can they be truly committed to him until they know when/if he’ll be cleared to practice and play?

And while G.M. Chris Grier has pushed the idea that Tua is no more susceptible than anyone else to getting another concussion, the issue isn’t whether he’ll get another concussion. It’s whether his next concussion will be the one that keeps him from ever getting cleared again. Also, given his lack of size (relative to other quarterbacks), the question is whether he can protect himself against being thrown to the ground and having his helmet strike the turf. That’s how he suffered each of his two (or three) concussions in 2022.

Schefter’s safe harbor — “not expected” — flows from the very real possibility that the Dolphins have decided to express a clear commitment to Tua until the moment they decide to rescind said commitment. Given the extent to which the potential arrival of Deshaun Watson left Tua discombobulated throughout the first half of 2021, the Dolphins don’t want him thinking they may be moving on from him, until they affirmatively decide to move on from him.

That’s how it sometimes goes in the NFL. A team says it definitely wants a player until it no longer does. And when that happens, the team rarely gets dragged for the messages it previously spread.

Especially when the message deliberately contains just enough wiggle room, as the current message does.

And it makes sense to leave wiggle room. What happens if Brady reaches out to the Dolphins and expresses interest in playing for the Dolphins? Will they say no? They lost a first-round pick last year for lining up Brady and coach Sean Payton when both were under contract with other teams.

That’s another reason for the Dolphins to put out the word that they’re not “expected” to pursue Brady. We all know that the pursuits happen before free agency begins. Brady is already trying to throw pre-emptive dirt on the inevitable tampering tracks. The last thing the Dolphins want or need is to give up another first-round pick for talking to Brady before they’re allowed to do so.

So, sure, they’re “not expected” to pursue Brady. If/when Brady pursues them, that may be a very different story.

Raiders, Dolphins, 49ers among potential fits in 2023

I was prepared to group the Patriots with Tampa as comprehensive nonstarters for Brady’s final ride. The return of Bill O’Brien as offensive coordinator, though, ticks New England up the list. Brady knows him well from the five years BOB served in Foxborough, including the season (2011) when he ran the offense. It seems they almost met again in 2022, as the Bucs were reportedly hoping to hire O’Brien if Byron Leftwich had snagged Jacksonville’s head coaching gig. It’s a selling point.

Rob Gronkowski doesn’t see a New England return, though, with the behemoth telling Travis and Jason Kelce’s New Heights podcast: “I would 100 percent be surprised if he went back to New England, no doubt. It would be nuts, it would be a crazy story, but I just really don’t see that happening. But you never know.”

I see another obstacle. Brady returning to the Patriots could be shaped as Bill Belichick waving the white flag. The quarterback left town and won a Super Bowl while his old coach fumbled through three underwhelming campaigns. There’s something poetically perfect about one more run, but it would require everyone to shove their egos aside. Unlikely.

Dolphins coach – Thought we had 1st before delay flag on 4th-and-1

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Miami Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel offered an explanation for a critical delay of game penalty his team incurred on its final offensive possession in a 34-31 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

Facing fourth-and-1 from their own 48-yard line with 2:28 remaining in the game, the Dolphins failed to get a play off in time and were flagged for delay of game. The penalty pushed them back to fourth-and-6, and they were unable to convert on a Skylar Thompson pass attempt to tight end Mike Gesicki.

McDaniel said afterward it was communicated to him that the Dolphins had picked up a first down on the prior play, and he didn’t immediately have a fourth-down play ready.

“There was some communication that we’d gotten first down,” he said. “So then we were deploying a group of players for the first-and-10 call. Then it was articulated that no, it was fourth down … I had gotten conflicted information that it was a first down; I don’t really know exactly who it was from. It’s probably the first time all year that that had happened. You try to do your best. As it was, I thought we had a fourth-and-6 opportunity we were unable to come up with.

“You just have to adjust to any variables out there, and I thought we had a chance at fourth-and-6, as well.”

The Dolphins entered Sunday’s contest 14-point underdogs but held a one-score lead midway through the third quarter. The Bills answered with 14 straight points to take a 10-point lead with two minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Miami cut its deficit to three points after a Jeff Wilson Jr. touchdown run with 11 minutes left in the game and got the ball back with four minutes remaining with an opportunity to tie it or take the lead.

Thompson completed a 14-yard pass to Jaylen Waddle on second-and-15 to bring up third-and-1, but Salvon Ahmed’s rushing attempt did not result in a first down. McDaniel said he believes someone on his headset communicated to him that Ahmed had converted, however, and the coach said he called a play to reflect that before realizing the actual down and distance.

The Dolphins did not have any timeouts remaining and could not stop the clock after the Bills took over on downs.

Sunday’s contest was the Dolphins’ first playoff appearance since the 2016 season. The five-year playoff drought marked the third-longest in franchise history.

Bills vs. Dolphins score: Live updates, stats, highlights, analysis as AFC East rivals clash in wild-card game

The Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills have one half of their Super Wild Card Weekend matchup in the books. At the break, Josh Allen’s club finds itself ahead, 20-17, but this AFC East showdown may be a bit closer than those may have expected.

Both of these teams were a little tight to start as the Bills turned the ball over on downs on their opening possession and the Dolphins went three-and-out, but Buffalo quickly settled in after that and went on a 17-0 run. Allen completed a 52-yard pass to Stefon Diggs that would set up a 6-yard touchdown reception by Dawson Knox to start the scoring on the day, and a 12-yard run by James Cook on the following possession complemented a Dean Marlowe interception off rookie Skylar Thompson midway through the first quarter.

However, after that run by Buffalo, the Dolphins put together a 17-0 run of their own to tie the game right before the half. The bulk of those points came courtesy of two interceptions that Miami was able to force off Josh Allen. After a ball bounced off Cole Beasley and landed into the arms of Jevon Holland, Thompson was able to connect with Mike Gesicki for a touchdown that helped tie the game along with a Tyreek Hill two-point conversion.

As we’ve seen with this Bills offense before, however, you can’t leave it any time. After Miami tied the game with 33 second left in the half, Buffalo marched 54 yards down the field and retook the lead, thanks to a Tyler Bass field goal.

Can the Dolphins rally in the second half and pull off the biggest upset of the weekend or will the Bills hang on to advance to the divisional round? We’re about to find out. As this game continues to unfold, be sure to check out our live blog of Sunday’s matchup. Below, you’ll find instant analysis and real-time highlights of all the best plays.

Dolphins QB Skylar Thompson to start wild-card game vs. Bills

MIAMI — Rookie Skylar Thompson will officially make his third career start for the Miami Dolphins during Sunday’s wild-card playoff game against the Buffalo Bills.

Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel confirmed the news during his news conference Friday, adding that veteran Teddy Bridgewater had worked tirelessly to make himself available in a backup role come Sunday.

Starter Tua Tagovailoa remains in the concussion protocol after suffering his second concussion of the season in the game against the Green Bay Packers on Dec. 25. Bridgewater dislocated the pinkie finger on his throwing hand the following week, paving the way for Thompson to start the team’s regular-season finale against the New York Jets prior to Sunday’s game against the Bills.

“Obviously, it’s a goal of mine to be a starter and be in these types of situations,” Thompson said. “You just never know what that’s going to look like exactly, and the way that things have played out this year to where I’ve had opportunity to play a little bit and have an opportunity like this this weekend, it’s crazy.

“But I’m very, very excited for it. This is what I’ve worked for for a very long time. So it’s time to soak it in, have fun with it and do the best that I can help this team win.”

The Dolphins selected Thompson in the seventh round of this year’s draft out of Kansas State. He made six appearances during the regular season, more than half of which coming as mid-game relief for an injured starter.

Miami and Buffalo split their regular-season series, each winning at home. The Dolphins ran for 188 yards against the Bills in Week 15, but running back Jeff Wilson Jr. says he doesn’t think they necessarily need to implement a run-heavy script just because of their quarterback situation.

“The way Skylar is developing and learning the plays and getting more comfortable playing the quarterback position in our offense, I feel like we don’t have to alter all of those things,” Wilson said. “We just have to play good, complementary football … the run got to help the pass, the pass got to help the run, and that’s how we win the game.”

McDaniel did not update the statuses for OT Terron Armstead or RB Raheem Mostert, neither of whom practiced Wednesday or Thursday. Their availability will likely come down to a game-time decision.

Dolphins rule Tua Tagovailoa out, prep Skylar Thompson to start at QB

MIAMI — Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has been ruled out for Sunday’s wild-card game against the Buffalo Bills, coach Mike McDaniel said Wednesday.

The third-year pro has been in the concussion protocol since Dec. 26 after suffering his second documented concussion of the season the day before in a loss to the Green Bay Packers. McDaniel said that Tagovailoa has not been cleared to resume any sort of football activities and that because of the amount of time he has already missed, McDaniel was able to rule him out.

McDaniel said the Dolphins are preparing for rookie Skylar Thompson to make his third career start Sunday; veteran Teddy Bridgewater is still working his way back from a dislocated pinkie finger on his throwing hand, and his possible availability is unclear.

The team signed nine-year veteran Mike Glennon to its practice squad last week.

There has been no established timeline for Tagovailoa’s return over the past two weeks, as McDaniel said medical professionals have advised him it’s critical that Tagovailoa focus “solely on the day he’s in.” The first-year coach declined to speculate on Tagovailoa’s playing career, saying he is focused on the quarterback “getting to full health as a human being.”

Miami drafted Thompson in the seventh round in 2022 out of Kansas State, and the 25-year-old has made six appearances this season. The Dolphins’ Week 18 victory over the New York Jets represented the first time he played an NFL game start to finish, and McDaniel called attention to the difficulty of what has been asked of the rookie.

“I’m not sure if anyone really understands the gravity of what he was able to accomplish,” McDaniel said. “He’s banking on reps that he’s doing individually after practice every single day, some scout-team reps and then everything he did in the preseason. To jump into a fully operating machine and then to do it — I’m very aware of the score, but we’re talking about no turnovers, one sack. … It was no easy test. Those who are weak would be exposed immediately.

“The way Skylar thinks, he hopes it’s the worst game he ever plays.”

At Caesars Sportsbook, the point spread on the game moved from Bills -9 to -12.5 immediately after Tagovailoa was ruled out and was continuing to climb Wednesday afternoon. The line, which opened at Buffalo -11 but dipped down to -9 early in the week, was as high as -13 Wednesday afternoon, while the over/under total dropped from 46.5 to 43.5 on the Tagovailoa news.

Pro Bowl left tackle Terron Armstead has missed the team’s past two games, and McDaniel said that the veteran is “progressing” but that it’s still too early to determine whether he will play this Sunday.

ESPN’s David Purdum contributed to this report.

2023 NFL Playoff Picture: Seahawks and Dolphins sneak in, Packers out after upset loss to cap wild Week 18

The final week of the NFL regular season always gives us a lot of drama, and this year was no different.

The Packers had a chance to clinch the NFL’s final playoff spot with a Sunday night win over the Lions, but Detroit was able to pull off a monstrous 20-16 upset that means Aaron Rodgers and the Packers will now be sitting at home this postseason.

With the Lions win, the seventh-seed in the NFC ended up going to the Seahawks, who kept their playoffs hopes alive earlier in the afternoon with one of the wildest wins of the day. With just three minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Seahawks were trailing 16-13 and on the brink of elimination from the playoffs, but they managed to force overtime where Jason Myers hit a game-winning field goal from 32 yards away to give Seattle a 19-16 win.

In the early slate of games, the Dolphins were the biggest winner after they were able to sneak into the playoffs by stealing the seventh seed in the AFC away from the Patriots.

To get in the postseason, the Dolphins needed a win over the Jets and a loss by New England, which was playing the Bills. The Dolphins had their hands full with the Jets, but they were able to come away with an 11-6 win after Jason Sanders hit a 50-yard field goal with just 18 seconds left to play (Miami also got a safety on the final play, which pushed it to 11 points). The victory over the Jets marked the first time since 2003 that Miami was able to win a game without scoring a touchdown.

The Dolphins officially punched their ticket to the postseason after the Bills beat the Patriots 35-23, a victory that came thanks in large part to two kickoff return touchdowns by Nyheim Hines. The win by Buffalo means that a neutral-site AFC Championship is still in play, and that will happen if the Bills and Chiefs end up meeting in the AFC title game.

One thing that won’t be happening is a coin flip to determine where the Bengals and Ravens will be playing in the wild-card round. Although those two teams will be playing next week, the game will officially be in Cincinnati, thanks to the Bengals’ 27-16 win over Baltimore.

With that in mind, here’s a look at the playoff standings.

AFC playoff standings

ELIMINATED

Steelers (9-8): The Steelers picked up a win in Week 18, but to make the playoffs, they needed the Dolphins to lose to the Jets and that didn’t happen. The only upside here for Mike Tomlin is that his streak of consecutive seasons finishing above .500 will increase to 16 straight.
Patriots (8-9): All the Patriots had to do to get in the playoffs was beat Buffalo on Sunday, but they couldn’t get that done, which means they’ll be sitting at home for the postseason.
Titans (7-10): The Titans could have gotten into the playoffs with a win over Jacksonville, but they were officially eliminated on Saturday night after losing to the Jaguars.

NFC playoff standings

ELIMINATED

Lions (9-8): To stay in playoff contention, the Lions needed the Rams to beat the Seahawks, but that didn’t happen, which means the Lions have no path to the postseason. However, the Lions did get a small consolation prize by knocking the Packers out of the playoffs with a win on Sunday night. The victory means the Lions will now finish with a winning record for the first time since 2017.

Packers (8-9): All the Packers had to do to get in the playoffs was beat the Lions on Sunday night, but they didn’t get the job done. The Lions stunned the Packers 20-16, and now, Green Bay will be spending the postseason at home.

Patriots vs. Dolphins score: Live updates, game stats, highlights, analysis for Week 17 game

Sunday’s matchup in Foxboro between the Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots, a de-facto a playoff game, is underway. The host Patriots control their own destiny to make the postseason for the second straight year, but they need to win out. A loss to the Dolphins in Week 17 would officially eliminate them from playoff contention. Meanwhile, Miami, the AFC’s seventh seed, can clinch their conference’s final wild card slot with a win and a New York Jets loss at the Seattle Seahawks.

However, Sunday will not feature a showdown between former Alabama Crimson Tide first round picks, Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and Patriots quarterback Mac Jones. Tagovailoa is now out indefinitely after suffering at least his second concussion of the 2022 NFL season.  Nine-year veteran Teddy Bridgewater will start  in his place, and he last played in relief of Skylar Thompson in the Dolphins’ 24-16 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 6. Miami is 0-2 in games Tagovailoa has missed this season. However, New England has been fading of late, losing four of their last five contests.

Will the 24-year-old Jones be able to outduel the 30-year-old Bridgewater in this must-win AFC East contest?  As the game unfolds, be sure to stay locked in to our live blog of Sunday’s game. Below, you’ll find real-time highlights of all the best plays and expert analysis.

Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa in concussion protocol again

Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is in concussion protocol, coach Mike McDaniel said Monday. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Tagovailoa played every offensive snap in Sunday’s 26-20 loss to the Packers.
  • McDaniel said that Tagovailoa displayed symptoms and was placed in the protocol Monday.
  • Tagovailoa was previously in concussion protocol after suffering a head injury against the Bengals earlier this season. The circumstances surrounding that incident prompted the NFL to make adjustments to its concussion protocol.

Backstory

Tagovailoa was taken off the field on a stretcher in Week 4 after being slammed hard to the turf by Bengals defensive lineman Josh Tupou. He sustained head and neck injuries and was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation.

The quarterback had been evaluated for an apparent head injury in the first half of the previous game but was allowed to come back in the second half. The NFL launched an investigation into the Dolphins’ handling of Tagovailoa’s Week 3 evaluation and ultimately adjusted the league’s protocol.

After being placed in the protocol earlier this season, Tagovailoa missed two games.

In the first half against the Packers on Sunday, Tagovailoa was 9-for-12 for 229 yards, one touchdown and zero interceptions. In the second half, he was 7-of-13 for 81 yards, zero touchdowns and three interceptions.

The Dolphins, 8-7, are second in the AFC East.

Tua makes right call entering concussion protocol

McDaniel told reporters that Tagovailoa met with doctors today and told them he had symptoms of a concussion. The last time he went through the protocol, it prompted the NFL to make a change to better protect players. But this time, Tagovailoa’s situation is much more representative of how players have to be their own advocates.

No one noticed Tagovailoa receive any questionable hits on Sunday. Not the concussion spotters, not the unaffiliated neurotrauma consultants, and not his coaches or teammates. There is no foolproof way to prevent players from continuing to play through concussions because they often might not notice their symptoms until the game is over. As for the Dolphins’ playoff hopes, Teddy Bridgewater is a more than capable backup, but when backup quarterbacks have had to play this season, Miami has lost all three games. Without Tagovailoa, the Dolphins don’t pose much of a postseason threat. — Kahler

Evaluating the Dolphins’ playoff chances

After adjusting for the uncertainty of Tagovailoa’s status for the rest of the regular season and possibly the postseason, the Dolphins’ playoff projections fall 5.0%. These projections give him a 10% chance of playing in Week 17, and a 50% playing in any game after that. — Mock

Who steps up in Tua’s absence?

Teddy Bridgewater is a serviceable backup and the weapons on the Miami offense should make things easier for him. He’s been a little careless with the ball this season — three interceptions in 58 attempts — but he hasn’t started and finished a game yet this season.

Starter repetitions in practice should give him enough familiarity with his targets to keep his turnovers down and keep the Dolphins more than likely to grab a wild card spot in the AFC playoffs. — Mock
