James Wan, Blumhouse, Creepy Robot Doll

Chucky may be currently terrorizing the airwaves, but another distressing toy is making her presence known: the high-tech robot creation poised to trigger all your uncanny valley fears in M3GAN. The movie’s coming in January from producers James Wan (The Conjuring) and Blumhouse (Halloween), but you can get your recurring nightmares started with today’s trailer.

M3GAN – official trailer

What if Small Wonder’s disobedient android was the whole show instead of just a special guest star? Except with sinister dance movies and violent Westworld vibes? That’s what M3GAN looks like.

Here’s the synopsis while your heart rate returns to normal: “She’s more than just a toy. She’s part of the family. M3GAN is a marvel of artificial intelligence, a life-like doll programmed to be a child’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally. Designed by brilliant toy-company roboticist Gemma (Get Out’s Allison Williams), M3GAN can listen and watch and learn as she becomes friend and teacher, playmate and protector, for the child she is bonded to. When Gemma suddenly becomes the caretaker of her orphaned 8-year-old niece, Cady (Violet McGraw, The Haunting of Hill House), Gemma’s unsure and unprepared to be a parent. Under intense pressure at work, Gemma decides to pair her M3GAN prototype with Cady in an attempt to resolve both problems—a decision that will have unimaginable consequences.”

Mistakes were made! M3GAN is directed by Gerard Johnstone (Housebound); the screenplay is by Akela Cooper (who wrote Malignant and therefore is a proven commodity when it comes to “stories that make you go aw hell no!”) based on a story by Cooper and Wan (who knows a thing or two about creepy dolls… have you met Annabelle?). It hits theaters January 13.

Astronauts fly Einstein doll to demo physicist’s ‘happiest thought’

Albert Einstein’s “happiest thought” has been proven again by four international astronauts and a small doll made in his likeness (opens in new tab).

Upon entering Earth orbit on Wednesday (Oct. 5), the crew members onboard SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft “Endurance” (opens in new tab) revealed their chosen “zero-g indicator,” a plush toy of the late theoretical physicist. Floating at the end of a tether, the doll not only confirmed that the Crew-5 astronauts were safely on their way to the International Space Station, but that one of Einstein’s ponderings was indeed true.

“A couple of years after he came up with his groundbreaking theory of special relativity, Einstein, in his mind, still had a couple of loose ends to tie up,” Crew-5 pilot Josh Cassada, a NASA astronaut, U.S. Navy captain and physicist, radioed back to SpaceX’s mission control in Hawthorne, California. “While he was sitting [at his job] in the patent office because he wasn’t famous yet — [though he] definitely should have been — Einstein had what he said was one of his happiest thoughts of his entire life … that a person in free fall could not feel his own weight.”

“That thought, along with some others that he built upon, led to the general relativity and our understanding of gravitation and the curvature of space-time,” said Cassada.

A tradition first started by Soviet-era cosmonauts and later adopted for SpaceX crewed spaceflights, zero-g indicators signal to the still strapped-into-their-seats crew members that they have entered orbit — or are in free fall around Earth — such that they experience weightlessness. Einstein had his “happiest thought” in 1907, more than 50 years before the first human launched into space.

“We’re experiencing Einstein’s happiest thought continuously, as the International Space Station has been doing for over 20 years,” said Cassada. “On Crew-5, we call this little guy our ‘free-fall indicator.’ We’re here to tell you that there’s plenty of gravity up here. In fact, that is what keeping us in orbit right now and preventing this trip on Crew Dragon from being a one-way trip.”

Crew-5’s free-fall indicator was made by The Unemployed Philosophers Guild, a specialty shop offering “thoughtful gifts for thinking people,” as part of its “Little Thinker” line of dolls (opens in new tab). The 11-inch-tall (28-cm) Albert Einstein plush, dressed in a gray sweater and black pants, features the physicist’s trademark unruly white hair.

Einstein has now joined a small but growing collection of dolls that have flown on SpaceX missions to the space station. Previous zero-g indicators have included a plush Earth globe (opens in new tab), a sequined dinosaur (opens in new tab), a toy Grogu (“Star Wars”‘ “baby Yoda (opens in new tab)“), a baby penguin (opens in new tab), a couple of turtles (opens in new tab), a stuffed dog (opens in new tab) and a monkey (opens in new tab).

The Einstein doll, together with Cassada, Crew-5 commander and first Native American woman in space Nicole Mann, Japanese astronaut Koichi Wakata and Anna Kikina, Russia’s only active female cosmonaut, are scheduled to arrive at the space station on Thursday evening.

“A little bit like life, we live in the same world, we live in the same universe,” said Cassada. “Sometimes we experience it in a very different way from our neighbors. If we can all keep that in mind, we can all continue to do absolutely amazing things and do it together.”

SpaceX’s flight controllers thanked Cassada for sharing his sentiments, as well as the meaning behind the Crew-5 “stowaway.”

“My crewmates are just happy that we didn’t break out a dry erase board and get into more detail,” replied Cassada with a smile.

Shaun the sheep doll flying on NASA’s Artemis 1 moon mission

A popular stop-motion sheep is about to go from Mossy Bottom Farm to the moon.

Shaun, the title character from the animated television series “Shaun the Sheep,” has been assigned a space on NASA’s Artemis 1 mission, targeted for launch later this month. The unusually clever Shropshire lamb — in plush doll form — will fly well beyond the moon on NASA’s uncrewed Orion spacecraft prior to returning to Earth in a little over a month’s time.

Shaun’s inclusion in the Artemis 1 Official Flight Kit (opens in new tab) was arranged by the European Space Agency (ESA), which built the power-providing service module for the mission.

“This is an exciting time for Shaun and for us at ESA,” David Parker, director for human and robotic exploration at ESA, said in a statement (opens in new tab) released on Tuesday (Aug. 2). “We’re woolly very happy that he’s been selected for the mission and we understand that, although it might be a small step for a human, it’s a giant leap for lambkind.”

Related: NASA’s Artemis 1 moon mission: Live updates

ESA worked with Aardman, the animation studio behind the stop-motion sheep, to arrange for Shaun’s real-life space adventure.

“Aardman is excited to be joining ESA in making history by launching the first ‘sheep’ into space,” said Lucy Wendover, marketing director at Aardman. “As one of the first astronauts to fly on an Artemis mission (opens in new tab), Shaun is leading the way in lunar exploration, a great honor for our woolly adventurer!”

“2022 marks the 15th anniversary of Shaun’s first TV series, so what better way to celebrate than by traveling farther than any sheep has gone before,” she added.

A spinoff of another Aaarman production, “Wallace & Gromit,” Shaun (the sheep) first appeared in the 1995 short film “A Close Shave.” The TV series debuted in 2007 and has since been seen in 180 countries. Two feature length films followed, including 2019’s “A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon,” in which Shaun meets a visitor from outer space.

“Although it might be a small step for a human, it’s a giant leap for lambkind,” said ESA’s David Parker of Shaun the sheep’s upcoming space trip. (Image credit: European Space Agency)

To prepare for that movie, Shaun (again, as a plush doll) flew with an ESA team on a parabolic aircraft flight that recreated the weightless conditions similar to those experienced in space.

“[The flight] offered insight into the rigorous training that all astronauts undertake to prepare for spaceflight, which he will now experience for real,” ESA described in the release announcing Shaun’s flight on the Artemis 1 mission.

Shaun has now undergone even more “training,” traveling to various facilities in Europe and the U.S. to “see” different aspects of the moon mission in preparation. His journey was documented and will be presented in a series of ESA blog posts (opens in new tab) leading up to the launch.

Artemis 1 will mark the first integrated test of Orion and the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, leading the way to crewed flights to the moon. Under the Artemis program, NASA aims to land the first woman and first person of color on the lunar surface as it establishes a sustainable presence on the moon.

Shaun is not the only pop culture figure launching on board the inaugural Artemis flight. Four LEGO minifigures (opens in new tab) are also included in the OFK, and a one-of-a-kind Snoopy doll (opens in new tab) based on the comic strip beagle is flying as the mission’s zero-gravity indicator.
