Family Going to Tokyo Disney ‘Devastated’ Southwest Cancelled Flight

  • Jade Rodriguez said her family had a “surreal” trip to Japan planned for her son’s 21st birthday.
  • But after Southwest cancelled their flight from Tuscon to LAX, they missed their flight to Tokyo.
  • “Had we just been notified sooner, we would’ve driven and made it,” Rodriguez told Insider.

A family from Arizona was “in shock” and “devastated” after a last-minute Southwest flight cancellation caused them to miss their trip to Japan and left them out thousands of dollars.

Jade Rodriguez told Insider she, her husband, and their two children planned a “surreal” trip to Tokyo, Japan, because her 20-year-old said that was where he wanted to go to celebrate his 21st birthday on January 2. They were going to visit Tokyo Disney and the Pokemon Cafe in Tokyo, take a train to Kyoto and go sightseeing at historic temples.

They planned to take off from Tucson on Christmas Day for Los Angeles, where they’d catch their flight across the Pacific. They say they were notified their flight was slightly delayed but had no indication it was in serious jeopardy of not taking off at all, and were unaware of the ongoing disruptions Southwest was already experiencing.

But when they arrived at the airport in Tucson, they were met with confusion and miscommunication from the airline.

Southwest employees said were still working on assembling a crew, but told passengers they should check in their luggage anyway. “It was just a lot of miscommunication. One attendant was saying, ‘We’re not getting to LAX,’ another was saying to check in our bags,” Rodriguez said. “It was utter confusion.”

After all the conflicting information the flight was finally canceled altogether about seven hours before their American Airlines flight from Los Angeles to Tokyo was scheduled to take off. The drive from Tucson to Los Angeles was about seven and a half hours.

“Had we just been notified sooner, we would’ve driven and made it,” Rodriguez said, adding they tried everything they could to get on another flight but could not make it work.

Their flight could only be rebooked on Wednesday at the earliest, but it would be 20 hours of travel and would include covering the difference in flight cost. It would also only leave them about five days in Japan, upending their 8-day travel plan.

“We were just devastated. We’re just in shock,” Rodriguez said, adding that as of Friday they had yet to unpack all of their luggage because they were still struggling to process the situation.

Now they are trying to get as much of the trip refunded as they can, including from Southwest, American Airlines, the hotel in Japan, and Tokyo Disney, where they had already purchased tickets, among other expenses.

Rodriguez said they have received conflicting information from Southwest, with one email saying they would be getting a full refund and another saying they’d only be getting flight credits to be used in the future.

They did purchase travel insurance for the American Airlines flight to Japan and are hoping that means the full price will be covered. But Tokyo Disney, which is not owned by The Walt Disney Company, generally does not issue refunds.

Altogether, Rodriguez said they are out around $7,000.

They are still hoping to reschedule a trip for next year, depending on how much they can get refunded or rescheduled, but are unsure when they will be able to make a trip work for the whole family.

Rodriguez is a teacher, so she had this time off work, but would likely have to try to get work off in the spring because her break does not align with her son’s. Her husband, who is a retired member of the military but still teaches classes on the base, took off work for this trip and would have to try to do so again if the vacation is rescheduled.

Rodriguez said her older son is a college student who is “dedicated” to ROTC, a program that trains university students for military service, so he has limited time in which he can take a trip. He is also a big fan of Disney and Pokemon, which would’ve been the big highlights of the trip for him, so when they offered to take him somewhere else at the last minute, he just said “no.”

Rodriguez said that in the future she may consider getting travel insurance for the entire trip, rather than just the big international flights, even though they already have travel medical insurance through the military. She also said she knew some others may have had even more challenging experiences with the chaotic flight cancelations.

“I’m grateful we lived close and were with family,” she said. “But it was devastating really.”

The family was among thousands of Americans who experienced flight cancellations this week after Southwest had an operational meltdown. The airline canceled more than 2,900 flights on Monday, accounting for around half of all canceled flights across the world that day. The disruptions rippled through the travel industry, leading to rental-car shortages and higher flight prices.

When reached for comment, a spokesperson for Southwest said: “We apologize to all of our Customers who were affected by this disruption. Customers whose flights were canceled are eligible for a refund and are encouraged to submit requests for reasonable reimbursements for incidental expenses. Those will be processed on a case-by-case basis.”

The spokesperson also said impacted passengers can get assistance through a travel-disruptions portal on their site.

Tokyo Disney, which is owned by The Oriental Land Company, could not immediately be reached for comment. The Walt Disney Company, which licenses intellectual property to Tokyo Disney, did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.

Russell Wilson “devastated” that Nathaniel Hackett was fired, “wish I could’ve played better”

Getty Images

Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson said today that he feels for Nathaniel Hackett, the head coach who was fired yesterday, and believes he bears some of the responsibility for Hackett losing his job.

“First of all, obviously, devastated about Coach Hackett because I think he’s an amazing man, amazing teacher, amazing father, watching him with his kids, and what he’s been able to do and how he’s taught the game for us,” Wilson said. “This season has been a season we never thought was going to happen the way it did. He was a guy who put all of his time and all of his effort into us as players, as staff members, everybody, coaches as well. I think he’s an amazing coach, one of the brighter minds I’ve been around.”

Wilson said he knows he hasn’t played as well as Hackett needed him to play.

“It’s been a crazy season, tons of injuries, tons of everything else, but the reality is I wish I could’ve played better for him,” Wilson said. “I wish I could’ve played at the standard and level that I’ve always played at and know how to play at. So what I do know is he’s resilient, he’s going to be a tremendous coach like I said, and I love him to death and everybody misses him, for sure.”

The next head coach will need to get Wilson to play a whole lot better. And if Wilson plays as badly next year as he did this year, that’s going to raise serious questions about whether the Broncos’ enormous investment was in a past-his-prime quarterback no coach can fix.

Dog Lovers Left Devastated as Resident Evil 4 Remake Rewrites History for the Worse

The Resident Evil 4 remake showing we got last week is still fresh in our minds; we got to go hands-on with the title and were spoiled afterwards with a second trailer, this time focusing on the story. And while RE4 on PS5 looks to remain faithful to the original in most things, one purported aspect has managed to get some fan’s hackles up.

As detailed by IGN, in the original game, Leon was able to free an adorable furry friend who had become stuck in a bear trap. If you chose to free the animal (and what kind of monster wouldn’t), the faithful canine would return to pay back the favour, helping out during a particularly tough boss encounter. However, things look like they might play out a little differently in the remake, as seen in the clip below:

The reason for the change is unknown; perhaps Capcom wishes to signal that they are, in fact, cursed cat-preferrers. Or, it could be some kind of misdirection, playing on players expectations. Regardless, an outpouring of grief for the poor perished pooch followed, and not a small amount of good-natured anger. Popular fan-pupper account Can You Pet the Dog perhaps encapsulated the mood best when they wrote, quite succinctly:

Why do you think the Resident Evil 4 remake chose to break with canon in this highly specific way? Is this signalling that we should gird our loins for an even darker departure than the original? Press F to pay respects in the comments section below, and hug your canine companion close, if you are blessed enough to have one.

North Dakota family is ‘devastated’ and fundraising for a lawyer after they say police killed their pet raccoon that was sought in a local rabies scare

  • Erin Christensen was arrested after she brought her pet Raccoon into a bar, according to The Bismark Tribune.

  • Authorities raided Christensen’s home and killed the Raccoon on the spot, collecting his body to test for diseases, she said.

  • The family set up a fundraiser to pay for Christensen’s legal fees and donate to a wildlife rehabilitation center.

The family of a woman in North Dakota who evaded police is raising money after she said local police shot and killed their pet raccoon in relation to a rabies scare.

Erin Christensen, 38, and her family is raising money on GoFundMe to cover legal fees after she was accused of causing a rabies scare at a local bar in Maddock, North Dakota when she brought in her family’s pet raccoon, she wrote on the fundraiser.

The family had been nursing the raccoon, named Rocky, back to health for three months, according to The Bismark Tribune.

According to the fundraiser, Christensen found the animal on the side of the road in June.

“Rocky was found approximately 3 months ago in the evening, he was lonely, scared, hungry, we decided not to engage him because maybe his mom would come to help him, the next day he was still in the same spot, so we took him in,” the family wrote on the fundraiser page.

“We were working very hard to rehabilitate him back into the wild we have bottle fed him, cared for him, he was still being bottle fed when he left and was still learning how to forage food we would place around trees and obstacles,” the family added.

On September 6, police said that Christensen brought Rocky into a local bar in Maddock during happy hour, according to the Tribune.

Cindy Smith, who was bartending at the time, said that there were about ten people in the bar, and Rocky never bit anyone in the five minutes he was inside the bar.

“I saw she was carrying something, and I asked her what it was, and she showed me, and I said, ‘You’ve got to get it out of here,'” Smith told the Tribune. “I had no idea what she was thinking.”

According to the Tribune, the incident prompted the state Health and Human Services Department to issue a warning about potential rabies exposure.

“Rocky never left my arms when I visited the Maddock Bar, so who was at risk of rabies or other diseases?” Christensen stated on GoFundMe.

Christensen was arrested on Wednesday after the Benson County Sheriff’s Office and the North Dakota Game and Fish Department executed a search warrant, according to the Tribune.

Scott Winkelman, the Division Chief of Game and Fish Enforcement, told the Tribune that Christensen tried to evade authorities.

The Benson County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately return Insider’s request for comment on Sunday.

According to the family’s statement on GoFundMe, the authorities promised them that they would quarantine Rocky and let him go as long as he did not show any signs of rabies.

According to the Tribune, authorities raided Christensen’s home in search of Rocky and killed the Raccoon on the spot, taking his carcass to test for diseases.

“The police brought a battering ram to break down the front door of the house where Rocky was being housed at the time of his death,” Christensen said on the GoFundMe. “The amount of manpower used to find and kill Rocky, with simultaneous raids on three different residences, is impressive. A shock-and-awe campaign.”

Rocky tested negative for rabies, according to the statement on GoFundMe.

Christensen was arrested on charges of giving false information to law enforcement and tampering with evidence. She was also given a Game and Fish violation of unlawfully possessing a furbearer, according to the Tribune.

The charges are misdemeanors that together would carry a maximum punishment of several years in jail and fines totaling $7,500, the outlet reported. Christensen is currently free on a $1,500 bond, the Tribune said.

“The impact to my family is that my children are confused and traumatized because of the excessive force that was used during the acquisition of this animal,” Christensen stated on GoFundMe. “This erodes the trust that they have in local law enforcement agencies. My children are devastated and inconsolable.”

The family is raising money on GoFundMe to not only pay for Christensen’s legal fees but also to donate a majority of the money to wildlife rehabilitation centers in memory of Rocky.

“Rocky was just a few months old, he was the sweetest, most loving little boy ever who everyone loved, there was never a dull moment being around him, he was so dang smart and always happy,” she said on the GoFundMe.

Nick Kyrgios ‘devastated’ after quarterfinal defeat to Karen Khachanov as he destroys two rackets on court

And, as he crashed out in a five-set epic to Russia’s Karen Khachanov in the quarterfinals, Kyrgios’ frustration at such an opportunity slipping away simmered over: he smashed two rackets on the floor, buckling their frames beyond use.

Khachanov, meanwhile, stood on the opposite side of the net with his arms aloft, celebrating his 7-5 4-6 7-5 6-7(3) 6-4 victory.

“I honestly feel like sh*t,” Kyrgios told reporters. “I feel like I’ve let so many people down. These four tournaments [the grand slams] are the only ones that ever are going to matter. It’s just like you’ve got to start it all again. I have to wait till Australian Open. It’s just devastating. Like, it’s heartbreaking. Not just for me, but for everyone that I know that wants me to win.”

The first set flashed past in 35 minutes, dominated by both players’ big serves until a couple of errors in Kyrgios’ final service game gave Khachanov the break and the set.

An enforced break followed as the Australian took a medical timeout for treatment on his left knee before he rallied to level the match in the second set.

“Obviously I’ve been playing a lot of tennis the last couple months … I just split-stepped and just tweaked it a little bit,” he later said about his knee. “Ended up feeling fine. I got some Deep Heat on it. Everyone is carrying a bit of a niggle right now.”

Kyrgios’ momentum seemed to spill over into the third set as he engineered two break points in Khachanov’s opening service game, then another two at 4-4. He failed to convert any of these opportunities, however, and it was Khachanov who seized his chance to break at 6-5 and retake the lead.

Frustrated by losing this set, Kyrgios smashed a bottle of water during the changeover and received a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct.

The 27-year-old has already been fined $18,500 for four separate offenses at this year’s US Open, including spitting, swearing and smashing his racket, according to Reuters.

Although Kyrgios forced a fifth set, Khachanov broke in the opening game, saved break points in his next two service games and closed out the match to advance to the semifinals of a grand slam for the first time. He will now face Casper Ruud on Friday for a place in the US Open final.

“I’m super happy, super proud that I could finish the match, I could take it,” Khachanov said. “Serving for the match [is] never easy. Yeah, just super happy to do this step forward to make my first semifinal.”

It also marked the end of Kyrgios’ most successful year in grand slams following his run to the Wimbledon final in July.

“That’s all people remember at a grand slam, whether you win or you lose. I think pretty much every other tournament during the year is a waste of time really. You should just run up and show up at a grand slam, that’s what you’re remembered by.”
