Hubble Space Telescope watches galaxies’ destructive dance in new photo

These galaxies may look like they are performing a cosmic waltz, but the spirals are actually trapped in a dance of death that will someday end in a violent crash.

The Hubble Space Telescope recently captured an image of two galaxies dubbed ESO 364-65 and ESO 364-66, which are collectively known as Arp-Madore 608-333, gradually warping each other with their gravitational forces.

The telescope, which is managed by NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA), took the image while was turning around, ESA officials noted in a statement. The photo comes from a “snapshot” program designed to make use of tiny slivers of time between other observations, since Hubble needs to use every second of its observing time to the best of its ability.

Related: The best Hubble Space Telescope images of all time!

A Hubble Space Telescope image of interacting spiral galaxies. (Image credit: ESA/Hubble & NASA, Dark Energy Survey/DOE/FNAL/DECam/CTIO/NOIRLab/NSF/AURA, J. Dalcanton)

Although NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope is seeing farther into space than astronomers ever have before, Hubble is far from done. The venerable telescope, which launched in 1990, may even get new life through a proposed servicing visit, which would be the first since 2009.

The warping galaxy observations are part of an effort to identify targets that will possibly be of interest for further study. For Hubble, the initiative means snapping photos of targets carefully selected because they are visible whatever direction the telescope may be pointing.

The new image comes from Hubble’s Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS), which was a 2002 upgrade to an older camera. The camera arrived with a crew of astronauts aboard space shuttle Columbia, who had been dispatched to repair Hubble. A few years earlier, some of the telescope’s gyroscopes, which were supposed to keep it properly pointed, had broken down, leaving Hubble unable to beam back any new observations.

So what will happen when these interacting galaxies inevitably collide? They might form an elliptical galaxy, and such a merger could also switch on star formation that happens so fast it could drain the mega-galaxy of material for future stars.

There might be a monster galaxy in Arp-Madore 608-333’s future, but if this merger is anything like the Milky Way‘s impending collision with Andromeda, it probably won’t happen for billions of years.

Video Game History Foundation Calls Out Nintendo’s “Destructive” 3DS & Wii U eShop Closure

Image: Nintendo Life

Nintendo this week announced the closure of the 3DS and Wii U eShop, and well…it’s caused quite an uproar online.

So, what now that roughly 2,000 games will no longer be purchasable on the 3DS and Wii U digital storefronts? There’s seemingly not much that can be done from a consumer perspective. You either buy the digital games you want on these libraries now or run the risk of not having a “Nintendo approved” way of accessing them in the future.

It’s got to the point where the Video Game History Foundation – a nonprofit organisation dedicated to preserving, celebrating and teaching the history of games – has now published its own statement about the closure of Nintendo’s legacy digital shops.

Its statement acknowledges how it understands the “business reality” of the situation on Nintendo’s end, but notes how it leaves fans with few options moving forward if they want to access certain titles. And while not providing commercial access is considered to be “understandable”, preventing institutional work to preserve titles is “actively destructive to video game history”.

It also takes aim at Nintendo for actively funding lobbying that prevents places like libraries from being able to provide legal access to these games. Here’s the statement in full:

“While it is unfortunate that people won’t be able to purchase digital 3DS or Wii U games anymore, we understand the business reality that went into this decision. What we don’t understand is what path Nintendo expects its fans to take, should they wish to play these games in the future. As a paying member of the Entertainment Software Association, Nintendo actively funds lobbying that prevents even libraries from being able to provide legal access to these games. Not providing commercial access is understandable, but preventing institutional work to preserve these titles on top of that is actively destructive to video game history. We encourage ESA members like Nintendo to rethink their position on this issue and work with existing institutions to find a solution.”

As you can see above, towards the end Nintendo is encouraged to “rethink” its position on these issues and work with existing institutions to find a solution. This statement has already generated plenty of ‘Likes’ at the time of writing.

How are you feeling about the news Nintendo will be closing the 3DS and Wii U eShop? Leave a comment down below.

Russia says “destructive” sanctions wouldn’t hurt Putin personally

  • Kremlin: personal sanctions on Putin would not harm him
  • Russia keeps up pressure with land and sea exercises
  • Ukraine says Moscow is trying to sow panic
  • Four-way talks on east Ukraine start in Paris

MOSCOW/PARIS, Jan 26 (Reuters) – Russia warned on Wednesday that imposing sanctions on President Vladimir Putin personally would not hurt him but would be “politically destructive”, after U.S. President Joe Biden said he would consider such a move if Russia invaded Ukraine.

Biden said on Tuesday that personal sanctions on Putin, though a rare step, could be considered as part of a concerted drive by Washington and its allies to convince Moscow that any new aggression against Ukraine would bring swift and massive costs.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said U.S. congressmen and senators discussing personal sanctions against Russia’s top leaders were ignorant of the fact they were legally barred from holding assets, property and bank accounts abroad.

Individual sanctions against Putin would be “not painful (but) politically destructive”, said Peskov, who has previously said they would amount to a severing of diplomatic relations.

As officials began four-nation talks in Paris, Russia held new military drills on land and sea and moved more paratroopers and fighter jets to Belarus, north of Ukraine, for what it describes as joint exercises there next month.

Ukraine said Russia, which has gathered tens of thousands of troops near its border but denied it plans to invade, was trying to sow panic. Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said Moscow had not yet massed sufficient forces for a large-scale offensive, but that did not mean it could not do so later.

Nearly eight years after Russia seized Crimea and backed separatist fighters in Donbass in eastern Ukraine, the former Soviet republic has become the flashpoint in potentially the most dangerous East-West confrontation since the Cold War.

Russia says the crisis is being driven by NATO and U.S. actions, and is demanding security guarantees from the West, including a promise by NATO never to admit Ukraine. Moscow sees Ukraine as a buffer between Russia and NATO countries.

The United States has spent weeks trying to build agreement with European partners on a strong sanctions package if Russia attacks. But the task is complicated by Europe’s dependence on Russian energy and the fact that sanctions would hurt its own businesses too.

Italian business leaders, including power giant Enel , UniCredit bank (CRDI.MI) and top insurer Generali (GASI.MI), went ahead with a video conference with Putin on Wednesday despite a call from their government not to take part.

“I would like to underscore that we consider Italy as one of the leading economic partners,” Putin said, hailing cooperation with Italian companies and banks on major energy projects.

The EU relies on Russia for around a third of its gas supplies. Any interruptions to its Russian imports would exacerbate an existing energy crisis caused by shortages.

The United States has been talking to major energy-producing countries and companies around the world over a potential diversion of supplies to Europe if Russia invades Ukraine.

‘NORMANDY’ TALKS

In Paris, officials from France, Germany, Russia and Ukraine began talks on the simmering Donbass war in which some 15,000 people have been killed since 2014.

Andriy Yermak, chief of staff to Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, called the talks “a strong signal towards achieving peace in eastern Ukraine”.

But he said major ceasefire violations were taking place, and ruled out the prospect of speaking directly to the separatists.

In Russia’s parliament, Andrey Turchak, a senior member of the ruling United Russia party, said Moscow should support the separatist regions with certain types of weapons.

Russia denies being a party to the Donbass conflict but senior Ukrainian sources say they estimate it has 2,000 military personnel there, supporting about 35,000 separatists.

The four-way “Normandy format” talks, which have not been held for more than six months, are seen by the European powers as vital to remaining relevant in the broader dialogue with Moscow while the United States and NATO hold separate crisis negotiations.

French officials said they hoped that some progress could be made that would help wider efforts to reduce tensions.

A French presidential official said the aim was to set a date for talks on humanitarian measures and prisoner releases that would then lead to negotiations on the future of the Donbass region. However, he said the reality was that the Paris talks would serve to determine if Russia was serious.

“Either President Putin will seek maximum tension with us… or he assesses that in this great period of volatility, it’s useful to use this format to reduce tensions.”

Interfax news agency quoted the Russian defence ministry as saying a paratrooper unit had been deployed to Belarus on Wednesday, a day after moving in artillery forces and marines ahead of joint exercises next month.

It said Russia was also moving Su-35 fighter jets to Belarus for the “Allied Resolve” exercises.

The buildup of Russian forces in Belarus, a close Russian ally and former Soviet republic north of Ukraine, creates a new front for a possible attack.

RIA news agency said more than 20 Russian vessels had embarked on exercises in the Black Sea, south of Ukraine.

In the Vatican, Pope Francis led prayers for peace in Ukraine, referring to its “suffering people” and saying he hoped that wounds, fears and divisions could be overcome.

Colorado fire: Up to 1,000 homes burned to ground as inferno declared most destructive ever

Homes engulfed in flames and winds blow wildfire across Colorado

Up to 1,000 homes have been burned in what is being called the most destructive blaze in Colorado’s history.

Horrifying aerial footage shows the devastating impact of the fast-moving wildfire fanned by powerful winds that ripped through towns near Boulder,Colorado, on Thursday, prompting the evacuation of about 30,000 residents.

As the fires raged, startling video, filmed from a plane flying above the state, shows the towns of Superior and Louisville engulfed in flames at multiple locations.

Officials have declared the fire the most devastating ever to impact the state.

Governor Jared Polis declared a state of emergency, allowing the state to deploy emergency funds and resources including Colorado National Guard.

The wind gusts of 110 miles per hour had pushed fire at an astonishing speed, burning across 6,000 acres and destroying more than 500 homes — possibly as many as 1,000. Some owners watched on door-cams as fire approached their homes.

“This fire is, frankly, a force of nature,” said Mr Polis. “For those who have lost everything that they’ve had, know that we will be there for you to help rebuild your lives.”

The grass fire is believed to have been ignited by sparks from power lines and transformers toppled by high winds of Colorado’s drought-parched Front Range, according to Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle.

The Boulder Office of Emergency Management has urged residents not to return to their homes.

Thousands displaced as wild grass fire destroys hundreds of homes

Two northern Colorado cities on Thursday were ordered to evacuate as the wildfires fueled by 110-mph winds burned down hundreds of homes.

Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle said in a press briefing that an entire subdivision of 370 homes in Superior had been burned, along with an additional 210 homes in the city’s old town neighborhood.

A hotel and shopping center were also destroyed. Evacuation orders were first issued in the town of Superior and then in the adjacent municipality of Louisville, which has a combined resident population of 31,000.

Firefighting conditions expected to improve as winds decrease

According to the National Weather Service, firefighting conditions were expected to improve overnight as winds decrease late on Thursday.

The reduced speed would enable the firefighters to get ahead of the flames and for water-dropping helicopters and airplane tankers to be deployed against the blaze.

The agency however, extended the high-speed warning through 8 pm local time. Snow expected on Friday could help douse the blaze, reported USA Today quoting a National Weather Service meteorologist.

What caused the wildfire in Colorado

The wildfire is believed to have been started by downed power lines, along with a combination of wind gusts over 100 miles per hour and widespread drought, according to Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle.

Daniel Swain, a meteorolgist at the University of California, tweeted that it was “genuinely hard to believe” these fires were happening in December, which is usually a quieter time for blazes.

“But take a record warm & dry fall, only 1 inch of snow so far this season, & add an extreme (100mph ) downslope windstorm…and extremely fast moving/dangerous fires are the result.”

Farewell, Pirs; ISS module decommissioned, set for destructive reentry

After nearly 20 years in orbit serving as a docking port and airlock for the Russian segment of the International Space Station (ISS), the Pirs module — also called Stykovochny Otsek 1, or Docking Compartment 1 (DC-1) — will become the first habitable element of the station to be decommissioned and permanently removed from the orbital complex.

Under the plan, Pirs will be undocked from the nadir port of the Zvezda service module at 06:56 EDT / 10:56 UTC on Monday, July 26 ahead of a fiery destruction in Earth’s atmosphere at 10:51 EDT / 14:51 UTC later that day.

Pirs’ time at the ISS comes to a close after the successful launch of the Nauka multipurpose laboratory module which, after some initial issues post-launch, is on its way to a docking on Thursday, July 29.

Pirs – the more-permanent-than-planned temporary docking compartment

Pirs, meaning “pier,” traces its origins back to the Mir-2 space station — which was itself a Soviet project that’s design began in 1976.  Mir-2’s long and troubled history would eventually find it in the early 1990s where major design changes to launch its various modules via the Buran space shuttle were underway.

Following the collapse of the Soviet Union in December 1991, Mir-2 emerged the following year  as a four-module station — including a Docking Module, which would become Pirs.  In 1993, Mir-2 officially merged with the long-delayed NASA/European/Japanese/Canadian space station Freedom project to become the building blocks of the International Space Station.

At the time of the ISS’s inception, Pirs was meant to be a temporary addition to solve an immediate issue of a lack of docking locations on the Russian side.  The main nadir and zenith ports on the Zvezda service module were designed for the larger, main modules Russia originally planned.

They were not meant for Soyuz and Progress dockings, significantly limiting and complicating resupply and crew mission scheduling.  Pirs would help alleviate that issue by adding a third Soyuz/Progress docking port by attaching itself to Zvezda’s nadir port.

Following the successful launches of the Zarya control module and the Zvezda service module, Pirs was launched on September 14, 2001 at 23:34:55 UTC atop a Soyuz-U booster from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

After being placed in an initial parking orbit, a modified Progress power and propulsion section attached to the base of Pirs deployed its solar arrays and began maneuvering the module up to the ISS’s orbital altitude following a two-day rendezvous profile.

Pirs successfully performed an automated docking to Zvezda nadir at 01:05 UTC on September 17, 2001.  The Progress power and propulsion module was disconnected from Pirs on September 26, clearing the passive Soyuz/Progress docking port.

At the time of its arrival, the original plan called for Pirs be removed and replaced in 2006 with the Universal Docking Module, a much larger and multifunctional component of the ISS.

Chronically underfunded, the Universal Docking Module was cancelled, as was one of two research modules to be attached to it.  In 2004, the decision was made to alter Zarya’s backup, FGB-2, into the now-launched Nauka multipurpose laboratory module with the addition of the Prichal docking node.

The plan to remove Pirs to make room for the new module was transferred to Nauka’s design.

After Pirs’ arrival at the station, three spacewalks were performed by the three-person Expedition 3 crew to finalize electrical and data connections between Pirs and Zvezda.  Two additional Strela cranes were also delivered for the module via Space Shuttles Discovery and Atlantis on the STS-96 and STS-101 missions, respectively.

Pirs itself is 4.91 meters long, 2.55 meters in diameter, has an internal habitable volume of 13 cubic meters, a mass of 3,580 kg, and was designed to allow docked Progress spacecraft to transfer fuel to Zarya’s and/or Zvezda’s propulsion systems.

The first spacecraft to dock with Pirs was the Soyuz TM-33 crewed vehicle, which relocated from the Zarya nadir port over to Pirs nadir on April 20, 2002.  Physical docking took place at 09:37 UTC that day.

The first spacewalk from Pirs took place on October 8, 2001 (as part of the module’s outfitting).  All told, Pirs supported 52 spacewalks from the Russian segment of the ISS, with its last coming on May 29, 2019.

location of the Pirs module. (Credit: WikiCommons, users Penyulap and Craigboy)

From its original five year service life, Pirs has dutifully served the ISS program for just under 20 years in orbit.

Removing part of the ISS

A series of two spacewalks in November 2020 and June 2021 to begin the process of disconnecting Pirs from the ISS saw cosmonauts reroute cables and data lines, move Strela cranes, and temporarily stow items from the module that needed to stay on exterior platforms.

On Saturday, July 24, Russian crewmembers Oleg Novitsky and Peter Dubrov closed and locked the hatches of Pirs and the Zvezda nadir ports, performing subsequent leak checks to ensure a good seal ahead of physical separation of the module.

On Monday morning, July 26, at 06:53 EDT / 10:53 UTC, commands will be sent to physically remove the bolts that mated Pirs to Zvezda 20 years ago.  This three minute, automated process will culminate at 06:56 EDT / 10:56 UTC with physical separation of the Pirs module from Zvezda.

That moment will mark the first time a module of the International Space Station is permanently removed from the complex.

At the moment of separation, springs will push the Pirs/Progress MS-16 vehicle away from the station.  Progress MS-16 docked with Pirs on February 17, 2021 at 06:27 UTC as part of a resupply mission with an added twist: Progress MS-16 would never undock from Pirs if all went well with Nauka’s launch.

Instead, Progress MS-16 is tasked with maneuvering Pirs away from the ISS and performing the deorbit burn to destroy both crafts in the atmosphere.

After the springs push Pirs/Progress MS-16 away from the ISS, Progress will wait 10 seconds before activating attitude control and will wait until three minutes after physical separation to perform the separation burn.

This eight second maneuver will impart a 0.42 m/s velocity change and begin moving the duo more quickly away from the ISS.

Three hours after undocking, at 10:01:22 EDT / 14:01:22 UTC, the deorbit burn will begin, slowing Pirs/Progress MS-16 by 120 m/s and altering the shape of the orbit so that it reenters the atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean.  This burn will end at 10:18:59 EDT / 14:18:59 UTC.

Atmospheric reentry will occur at 10:42:30 EDT / 14:42:30 UTC, with the expected surviving pieces of Pirs and Progress falling harmlessly into the Pacific Ocean at approximately 10:51 EDT / 14:51 UTC.
