Luka Doncic destroys Knicks in unprecedented fashion: Seven numbers to know from Mavs star’s historic night

USATSI

Luka Doncic put on one of the greatest performances in NBA history on Tuesday night, tallying a stat line that’s impossible to believe even as I sit here and write it: 60 points, 21 rebounds and 10 assists in the Mavericks’ absolutely wild 126-121 overtime victory over the Knicks.

This marks the first 60-point, 20-rebound triple-double in NBA history, and just the second 60-point triple-double of any kind, joining James Harden’s 60-11-10 line from a 2018. Here are seven numbers to know from Luka’s unprecedented night:

  1. First 60-point, 20-rebound, 10-assist game all-time
  2. Second 60-point triple-double all-time (James Harden, 60-11-10)
  3. First 60-point, 20-rebound game since Shaq in 2000
  4. NBA’s first 60-point game this season
  5. Mavericks single-game scoring record
  6. Doncic career high (points and rebounds)
  7. Doncic’s 56.3 Game Score sixth best since 1983-84

That last number is per our CBS Sports research department. Game Score reflects the full box score in identifying the best single-game performances. Here are the only five that have topped Doncic’s 56.3 since 1883-84:

  1. Michael Jordan (64.6): 69 pts, 23-37 FG, 18 Reb, 6 Ast, 4 Stl
  2. Kobe Bryant (63.5): 81 pts, 28-46 FG, 18-20 FG, 3 Stl
  3. Karl Malone (60.2): 61 pts, 21-26 FG, 19-23 FT, 18 Reb
  4. David Thompson (57.0): 73 pts, 28-38 FG, 17-20 FT, 7 Reb
  5. James Harden (56.6): 60 pts, 10 Reb, 11 Ast, 17-18 FT, 4 Stl
  6. Luka Doncic (56.3): 60 pts, 21 Reb, 10 Ast, 21-31 FG, 16-22 FT

Wilt Chamberlain’s numbers are supposed to be mythical. Doncic is out here topping them. The most points Wilt ever scored in a game in which he also tallied 20 rebounds was 53.

I mean this was just crazy how easy Luka made this look. There is no way that a Mavericks victory should have been possible. They were down by nine with 33 seconds to play. With 4.2 seconds remaining and Dallas trailing by two, Luka missed a free throw on purpose, wound up winning the tip-drill rebound, and scored to tie the game.

Another number for your consideration: 13,884. That’s the number of games in which a team led by at least nine points with 35 or fewer seconds remaining coming into Tuesday. Want to know how many of those teams lost the game? Zero. Not one. Sorry, Knicks fans.

“I’m tired as hell,” Doncic said in his postgame interview. He should be. It’s not often that we can say something like this, but we may never see another game like this in our lifetime. That includes everyone reading this. Everyone on the planet, in fact. Regardless of age. I know records are made to be broken and all, but a 60-point, 20-rebound triple-double could feasibly stand forever.

Is this showing enough to move Doncic to the front of a crowded early MVP race? It’s hard to argue against it. On a night when Joel Embiid dropped 48 and 10, Doncic made that line look downright childish in drawing basically even with Embiid as the league’s top scorer (33.7 to 33.6). But this goes beyond the numbers. A night like this hits on a gut level. Doncic is the most mesmerizing player we have in today’s game. He took our breath away yet again on Tuesday.

Fire in Brooklyn Today Destroys NYPD Evidence Warehouse in Red Hook – NBC New York

An untold amount of “biological evidence” linked to New York City crimes dating back decades was destroyed or damaged in a raging inferno that devoured an NYPD warehouse off the Brooklyn waterfront Tuesday, authorities say.

The fire, which broke out around 10:40 a.m. at the Erie Basin Auto Pound in Red Hook, a sprawling warehouse on Columbia Street, left a half-dozen first responders and two civilians hurt — and sent up towering black smoke plumes so thick some confused New Yorkers thought the blaze had started in Manhattan.

It escalated to three alarms within about 30 minutes, and roughly 150 fire department members were at the scene through early afternoon.

It wasn’t immediately clear what sparked the blaze, and the investigation could take some time. Firefighters were forced to withdraw from the interior early because of the intense flames and combustible material, as well as the threat of collapse. One section of the warehouse, which may have had hundreds of e-bikes in it, did fall, officials said.

A total of eight people — three firefighters, three EMS members and two civilians — were hurt in the fire, but all are expected to be OK, FDNY Chief of Department John Hodgens said.

There was no estimated cost of the damage early. It wasn’t clear how many vehicles were in the lot at the time the fire broke out, but there appeared to be dozens of cars, trucks and motorcycles, along with ATVs, parked on the pier area.

NYPD officials said the vehicles included some historic ones as well as e-bikes, though a full inventory needed to be conducted to determine what was in the warehouse at the time of the fire. Biological evidence from past crimes, including burglaries and shootings — some of it going back 20 or 30 years — was kept at the location, the NYPD said.

Sandy property evidence was there as well. Rape kits, however, were not stored at that facility. Police plan to do a full accounting of the contents to determine if anything can be salvaged, and the extent of the overall damage, but the deep-seated volume of the fire, the building structure and limited access are problematic, officials say.

Chopper 4 was over the multi-alarm fire.

The FDNY appeared to be using boats as part of its firefighting effort during the worst of the fire — and top fire department officials say drones will be used in the coming days to identify any hard-to-see hotspots.

The city’s Office of Emergency Management advised people in the area close their windows to limit smoke exposure. Traffic delays mounted in the area through the morning.

Chopper 4 was over the scene through some of the most ferocious fire, hovering over a row of dirt bikes at one point as a nearby pickup truck burst into fire. The lot appears to be the same one where NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell and Mayor Eric Adams crushed illegal dirt bikes as part of a crackdown this summer.

Erie Basin is one of several lots the NYPD uses to store vehicles that have been seized for reasons other than parking violations. Those might include the arrest of the vehicle owner, investigative purposes or legal reasons, the city says.

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) New York branch responded to assist.

Notre Dame vs. Clemson score: Irish defense destroys No. 4 Tigers in signature win for Marcus Freeman

Notre Dame delivered a crushing blow to No. 4 Clemson by upsetting the Tigers 35-14 in a banner victory for first-year coach Marcus Freeman. The Fighting Irish used a suffocating defense and elite special teams to frustrate Clemson, limiting the visitors to just 281 yards of total offense and holding the Tigers without a touchdown until the fourth quarter when the game was essentially out of reach.

The Fighting Irish’s offense faced struggles of its own, but Logan Diggs and Audric Estime both surpassed 100 yards on the ground as Notre Dame imposed its will in key situations while averaging 5.6 yards per rush. Initially, however, it was a punt blocked by Jordan Botelho that Prince Kollie returned for a touchdown in the first quarter that gave the home team an early edge.

The defense took over from there as Clemson quarterback DJ Uiagalelei struggled to jumpstart the Tigers offensively. Eventually, he was replaced by five-start true freshman Cade Klubnik late in the third quarter but to no avail. Klubnik’s second pass was intercepted, leading to an Estime touchdown that made it 21-0 with 14:37 remaining.

Marcus Freeman’s signature victory

After embarrassing home losses to Marshall and Stanford earlier in the season, Freeman needed a signature win. This one certainly qualifies. Clemson has consistently been among the sport’s top programs for the past decade, and the Tigers came into the week as one of just six undefeated teams in the sport.

His recruiting work has been stellar; the Fighting Irish currently own the No. 3-ranked class in the 2023 cycle, per 247Sports. But in his first season as a head coach, Freeman needed some on-field accolades to pair with his work on the recruiting trail. He’s got them now, and the Fighting Irish may not be done yet. They figure to be heavy favorites the next two weeks against Navy and Boston College before a big season finale at No. 9 USC. Depending on where the Trojans are in the national landscape at that point, Notre Dame could have yet another chance to play the spoiler role on the national stage.

Clemson CFP implications

The loss does not altogether eliminate Clemson from CFP contention, but it does make the Tigers’ path to the playoff more challenging. With a win over a well-regarded North Carolina team in the ACC Championship Game, Clemson could still make the CFP field as a one-loss team, according CBS Sports expert Jerry Palm. But they may need to win that game convincingly over the No. 17 Tar Heels, who improved to 8-1 with a 31-28 win over Virginia on Saturday.

Clemson still has three must-win regular season games ahead as well, though the Tigers should be heavy favorites in all three contests. Up first is Louisville next week, followed by Miami and South Carolina to close the season. All three are home games.

Clemson quarterback situation

Clemson’s quarterback situation remains unsettled, as evidenced by the fact that coach Dabo Swinney turned to Klubnik for a spark in the second half yet again. But unlike in a 27-21 win over Syracuse two weeks ago, the move backfired. Swinney quickly pulled Klubnik and put Uiagalelei back in the game after Klubnik’s first pass was intercepted.

Where Swinney goes from here will be fascinating to see. Though Uiagalelei has obviously improved since last season, the Tigers do not inspire fear in opponents offensively and Klubnik appears to be the program’s quarterback of the future. With Clemson’s CFP hopes on shaky footing, Swinney’s insistence on sticking with Uiagalelei figures to be tested again in the season’s remaining weeks.
