Titans vs. Packers score, takeaways: Derrick Henry does it all, leads Tennessee past Green Bay to stay hot

The Tennessee Titans defeated the Green Bay Packers, 27-17. The Packers fell to 4-7, while the Titans improved to 7-3.

The Titans were the first on the scoreboard on an 83-yard drive that ended with a Dontrell Hilliard touchdown reception from Ryan Tannehill. The Packers got their first points on a touchdown pass from Aaron Rodgers to Christian Watson. The extra point was blocked, leaving things at 7-6.

A Derrick Henry rushing touchdown right before halftime gave the Titans a 14-6 lead. Henry not only made an impact on the ground, but he also showed off his quarterback skills, throwing a touchdown pass to Austin Hooper.

The Packers came within three thanks to another Watson touchdown and a successful two-point conversion. Not long after, the Titans responded with Hooper’s second touchdown of the night, this time on a toss from Tannehill.

The Titans sealed the win with a defensive stop on fourth-and-short, giving them the ball back with just over two minutes remaining in the game. They ran one play before the two minute warning, a 51-yard pass to Treylon Burks that put the finishing touches on an impressive victory.

Tannehill has now won his last five starts, and the Titans have won seven of their last eight games.

Why the Titans won

The Titans were dominant throughout most of the game and did not trail once in the “Thursday Night Football” matchup. They bested the Packers in terms of total first downs, total yards, passing yards, rushing yards, yards per play and time of possession. When you come out on top in so many categories offensively, typically that means you get the win as well.

Quarterback Ryan Tannehill played a great game, going 22-of-27 with 333 yards and two touchdowns. He did have one interception, but it was not a game changer.

Derrick Henry was the other star of the game, totaling 87 yards on 28 carries with one rushing touchdown and one passing touchdown (more on that in the “Play of the Game” section). This creative offense threw the Packers defense off.

Rookie Treylon Burks led the team in receiving with 111 yards on seven catches, including a 51-yarder to officially seal the victory. Robert Woods was also efficient through the air, amassing 69 yards on six receptions.

Why the Packers lost

The Packers were playing from behind the entire game and could never do enough to catch up with a Titans team that is only getting better as the season continues. The Titans came out looking more comfortable and more prepared than the home team.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers went 24 of 39 with 227 yards and two touchdowns, but it was the missed wide-open receivers that were the most puzzling and detrimental. The Titans do not present the most difficult secondary to play against in the league, but the Packers made it look really good with their offensive struggles. Rodgers’ longest pass was a 28-yard toss to Randall Cobb.

The defense was unable to contain Tannehill, and even when it picked him off, the offense was unable to capitalize.

Turning point

The Titans’ second touchdown, a four-yard rush from Henry, extended their lead before the half and gave them momentum as they went into the third quarter. The defense then held the Packers to a field goal to open the second half. It is always a win to hold Rodgers to three points when he is marching down the field, even in a year during which the Packers are not playing up to their usual standard.

Play of the game

Henry is a remarkable running back, but it turns out he is a decent quarterback as well. On second-and-goal, Henry got the ball, and it looked like he would do what he is best at: punch it into the end zone. However, the offense had a trick play up its sleeve. Henry threw the ball to Austin Hooper for the TD to extend the Titans lead. After the game, Henry complimented Hooper on the catch and noted that the play was thanks to head coach Mike Vrabel and the offensive staff.

What’s next

The Titans will host the Cincinnati Bengals next week, who are 5-4 heading into the weekend. The Bengals are hopeful that wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase can make his return in Week 12 against Tennessee. Chase has been sidelined with a hip injury.

The Packers head to Philadelphia to face the Philadelphia Eagles. Philly just lost its first game of the season, falling to the Washington Commanders in Week 10. That puts them at 8-1 heading into the weekend and in first place in the NFC, owning the tiebreaker over the 8-1 Minnesota Vikings.

Derrick Favors Headed To Rockets In Multi-Player Swap

9:15PM: The Rockets intend to waive newly-acquired wing Ty Jerome, according to Jonathan Feigen of The Houston Chronicle. Feigen adds that Derrick Favors and Theo Maledon are considered the most likely among these new additions to the team to stick on its 15-man standard roster when the regular season commences.

8:13PM: The Thunder will send center Derrick Favors, shooting guard Ty Jerome, forward Maurice Harkless, point guard Theo Maledon and the Hawks’ 2025 second-round draft pick to the Rockets in exchange for athletic swingman David Nwaba, wing Sterling Brown, point guard Trey Burke and power forward Marquese Chriss, per Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

Woj adds that Oklahoma City will net two trade exceptions in the deal. In pure salary terms, the exchange will help the Thunder get $10MM under the league’s punitive luxury tax cap threshold. Wojnarowski notes that Favors in particular is tradable among the returning players arriving in Houston, as a solid backup big man on an expiring $10.2MM salary.

The 6’9″ Favors, 31, was a longtime key backup big man with several solid playoff-bound clubs. Last year with the Thunder, he appeared in just 39 games, averaging 5.3 PPG on 51.6% shooting, plus 4.7 RPG, across 16.7 MPG. Jerome and Maledon are both young players on rookie deals with remaining potential upside, and could benefit from their time in Houston.

On the Rockets side of the transaction, Houston is acquiring a second-round draft pick and only have to take back an additional $1MM in salary, as Woj details.

Kelly Iko of The Athletic reports (via Twitter) that the 2025 second-rounder is protected through the first ten picks of that draft’s second round. Should the selection not convey in 2025, Houston will receive the second-highest 2026 second-round draft pick among the Thunder, Mavericks and 76ers.

Given that No. 2 draft pick Chet Holmgren has been ruled out for the year with a Lisfranc injury in his right foot, and with the best player in this new trade being sent away from the team, it appears that the Thunder are prioritizing a year of youthful development, as they look to the 2023 draft lottery to build out their impressive young roster.

Oklahoma City added four rookies through the 2022 draft, including two other lottery picks beyond Holmgren. The Thunder have been in full-on rebuild mode since 2019/20, winning a total of 46 games over the last two seasons.

Houston has also been in the asset-collection and draft lottery-targeting phase of its journey since 2020. The team went 37-127 from 2020-2022. This year, the club drafted intriguing rookie power forward Jabari Smith with the third pick out of Auburn. The Rockets also made two other selections in the first round.

It appears unlikely that every player in this deal will be with their new clubs when the regular season opens. Bobby Marks of ESPN (via Twitter) notes that both teams will still have 18 guaranteed contracts on their books following this deal. Per league rules, that tally will need to reach 15 by October 17.

Jalen Brunson’s Derrick Rose connection may lead him to Knicks

Derrick Rose’s value may go beyond what he can produce on the floor for the Knicks. His presence alone could contribute to landing their priority in free agency.

The veteran guard is yet another link between the Knicks and coveted point guard Jalen Brunson, their bond tracing back to Brunson’s formative years in Illinois when Rose was the Bulls’ star point guard and Brunson had dreams of playing in the NBA one day.

“Jalen would go over to the Bulls facility and practice with the Bulls players,” Pat Ambrose, Brunson’s coach at Adlai Stevenson High School who remains close to him, told The Post in a phone interview. “That’s where he became good friends with Derrick Rose. So your story gets deep with the Knicks. Derrick saw that young Jalen was a very, very good player and Derrick was a Chicago kid, and really started to mentor Jalen basketball-wise.”

Back then, Brunson’s father, Rick, was an assistant on coach Tom Thibodeau’s staff, the same role he now has with the Knicks. It’s yet another layer, on top of Brunson’s relationship with Thibodeau, president Leon Rose and executive William Wesley — in addition to the fact Rose’s son, Sam, is Brunson’s agent — that may work in the Knicks’ favor as they look to land the talented 25-year-old who is coming off a career year.

They began to create salary cap space on Thursday to pay Brunson big money, trading out of the first round and dealing Kemba Walker to the Pistons, creating what is now $18 million of room. There is still work to be done, with Alec Burks and Nerlens Noel potentially getting moved, so the Knicks can make the former Villanova star an enticing offer. Brunson grew up in southern New Jersey before moving to Lincolnshire, Ill., for middle school and still has roots in the area, owning a home on the Jersey Shore. His mother, Sandra, is a big Giants football fan.

“I’m sure Leon Rose will play up all those ties,” Ambrose said. “I would not be surprised [if he wound up with the Knicks]. … The positive thing for the Knicks is he chose to go back home one time [for college] and there was success. Maybe he chooses to go back home again.”

The coach later added: “He likes Dallas, I know he likes Dallas. But he’s a [New] Jersey/New York guy.”

Brunson’s priority remains to be seen. In picking a college, he opted for Villanova over Michigan State and Illinois for multiple reasons, according to Ambrose. As his coach said, Brunson liked the idea of returning to the northeast and joining a winning program. It didn’t bother him that as a McDonald’s All-American he initially would take a backseat to Ryan Arcidiacono and not have the ball in his hands from the jump, as he would’ve at other schools. That unselfishness could work against the Knicks, since they will be selling the two-time national champion on the opportunity for a bigger role.

The Mavericks, meanwhile, are in a far better spot as a franchise after reaching the Western Conference Finals with Brunson playing a major role, albeit as Luka Doncic’s wingman.

“Being the man I wouldn’t say would be a top thing for him,” Ambrose said. “Putting the ball in his hands, any NBA player wants that, but he wants to win. I know winning is important to him and I know that something he really prides himself on is causing wins and making wins. That’s always his focus.”

There obviously remains a lot of uncertainty a week before the start of the free agency period. The Knicks still need to clear more cap space. Though Ambrose said he wouldn’t be surprised if Brunson winds up a Knicks, his former star player also enjoys playing for the Mavericks, who can offer him five years compared to the Knicks’ four. In Dallas, the former second-round pick has developed into a strong NBA player and is coming off a long playoff run in which he was somewhat of a breakout star, averaging 21.6 points per game.

It is also unclear how much money the Mavericks are willing to pay to keep Brunson, if they would go the extra yard like the Knicks appear primed to do.

“Not so much that money talks, but how much more money?” Ambrose wondered. “If Dallas slightly insults him with a low ball offer and New York shows it really, really wants him, it could change things.

“He’s also a young man that knows that he can help build a winner, he can work on that, and the future in the NBA can be pretty fleeting, whether it be an injury or drafts and things like that. He obviously knows Tom Thibodeau real well and knows that guy knows how to build winners.”

The Knicks have reportedly added a second player on an Exhibit 10 contract in forward Garrison Brooks. The 6-foot-9 Brooks spent this past year at Mississippi State, where he averaged 10.4 points, 6.6 rebounds and shot 34.2 percent from 3-point range. He previously attended North Carolina.

Thursday night, the Knicks signed guard Jean Montero to an Exhibit 10 deal. The 6-foot-2 Montero comes from the new high school league, Overtime Elite, that pays players. An Exhibit 10 contract includes an invite to training camp and summer league.

Celtics injury updates: Al Horford and Marcus Smart cleared to play, Derrick White out for Game 2

Getty Images

The Boston Celtics lost Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals to the Miami Heat in large part because they were without two key starters: Marcus Smart and Al Horford. They’ll be getting both of those guys back for Game 2 on Thursday night, as Horford and Smart are available to play, Ime Udoka announced prior to the opening tip.

Horford had been in the league’s health and safety protocols but registered multiple negative tests over the last 24 hours while Smart had been nursing a sprained foot but did enough prior to the game for the team’s medical staff to feel comfortable clearing him to play.

While the Celtics will benefit from getting Horford and Smart back in the lineup, they will be without guard Derrick White for Game 2, as he is away from the team to be there as his wife gives birth to their child.

Smart is super important to the Celtics, as he is the glue that helps keep Boston’s defense together, and though he doesn’t put up monster numbers on offense, his passing is a critical component of their attack on that end of the floor. He helps keep the ball moving if Boston gets too stagnant, and does a great job of putting his teammates in a position to get a good look. His 39.4 percent mark from 3-point range was also an additional weapon the Celtics used against the Bucks.

In Game 6 against Milwaukee, Smart put up 21 points, seven rebounds and five assists, while being a pest defensively to help extend the series for the Celtics. He followed that up with an 11-point, 10-assist, seven-rebound performance in Game 7, and finished the game a plus-18.

Game 2 will be crucial for Boston, as they don’t want to fall behind 0-2 in the series, so getting these two key pieces back should only help the Celtics’ cause.
