Johnny Depp’s 40-second cameo in Rihanna’s fashion show eclipsed the event

Comment

Halfway into “Savage X Fenty Show Vol. 4,” the latest streamable fashion show promoting Rihanna’s lingerie line, the camera lingers on a shadowy figure leaning against a tree. As it nears the figure, who is surrounded by men dancing in sync to Outkast’s “So Fresh, So Clean,” the mysterious person is revealed to be Johnny Depp, sporting a dark robe and other garments from the Savage X Fenty menswear collection.

Depp saunters away from the tree, in the direction of another. At one point on his short journey, he moves in slow motion. His blank gaze remains trained on the camera, aside from the brief moments in which it shifts to the coordinated dancers he passes or up toward the tree he approaches and lightly hugs.

The whole thing takes up about 40 seconds in a special lasting as many minutes, but Depp’s very inclusion in “Vol. 4” set off days of outrage in the lead-up to its Wednesday release on Prime Video. The 59-year-old actor has been a polarizing presence these days, the ire toward him stemming from ex-wife Amber Heard’s allegations that he abused her throughout the course of their relationship, which ended in 2016.

In June, Depp won his high-profile defamation lawsuit against Heard over a 2018 op-ed in which she described herself as a representative of domestic abuse; he was awarded $15 million, while she received $2 million after the jury found that Depp’s lawyer Adam Waldman defamed Heard (one of three counts in her countersuit).

Depp returned to business soon after the verdict. He created a TikTok account that garnered 16.5 million followers and announced he would be releasing an album with British guitarist Jeff Beck. He booked film projects, including a biopic of the artist Modigliani that Depp is set to direct and co-produce with Al Pacino. Dior continued to stand by Depp, who has been the celebrity face of its Sauvage cologne since 2015.

Rihanna isn’t the first to support Depp publicly, and “Vol. 4” isn’t the first surprise appearance Depp has made this year — in August, he made a bizarre virtual cameo at the MTV Video Music Awards as the Moonperson, the VMAs mascot that usually appears in trophy form. But given Rihanna’s massive influence as a pop superstar and billionaire business mogul, critics of Depp have argued that she is misusing her platform. On social media, Depp’s fervent fan base interpreted his appearance in “Vol. 4” as Rihanna, a prominent survivor of domestic abuse, showing solidarity with Depp, who has alleged that Heard was abusive toward him.

Rihanna, whose business ventures Savage X Fenty and Fenty Beauty have been commended for serving diverse sets of consumers, has also received praise for the inventiveness of her Savage X Fenty shows, which have previously featured celebrities. Depp appears in “Vol. 4” alongside Hollywood stars such as Winston Duke, Taraji P. Henson and Sheryl Lee Ralph, as well as supermodels including Joan Smalls and Cara Delevingne. Representatives for Savage X Fenty have not responded to The Washington Post’s request for comment on Depp’s appearance in the show.

Earlier this year, news broke that Depp planned to appeal the $2 million verdict from Heard’s countersuit; Virginia Court of Appeals records indicate that his legal team officially filed last week.

Netflix licensing will “help fund” Johnny Depp’s next movie

Bloomberg reports a licensing deal with Netflix will provide funding for the production of Johnny Depp’s first film following the actor’s bitter defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife Amber Heard for describing herself as “a public figure representing domestic abuse” in an op-ed.

According to the report, Netflix is footing some of the bill for French actress / director Maiwenn Le Besco’s La Favorite, a period film centering on France’s King Louis XV (Depp) and Madame Jeanne Bécu du Barry (Le Besco), the king’s third mistress whose association with him ultimately led to her being guillotined during the French Revolution. Though neither Netflix nor Why Not Productions, the French studio behind the project, have announced La Favorite, the film is apparently slated for a 2023 release in French theaters and has been licensed to stream on Netflix France 15 months later.

Word of La Favorite comes at a time when Netflix has seemingly prioritized courting controversy as a matter of principle and laid off swaths of its staff as employees voiced their concerns about the company’s corporate culture. Netflix entered an agreement with the French film cinema guilds ARP, BLIC, and BLOC earlier this year and committed to investing at least 4 percent of its annual net revenue in France to the production of French and European features, including La Favorite.

According to Bloomberg, Netflix’s license only covered La Favorite in France.

Disclosure: The Verge recently produced a series with Netflix.

Update July 7th, 8:00PM ET: After this post was published, Bloomberg updated its article to report Netflix is licensing the movie in France, and while its financial support will help finance the production, Netflix is otherwise not involved. The post has been updated to reflect that.

Johnny Depp’s representative comments on rumours the actor will return to Pirates of the Caribbean series

Johnny Depp won’t be returning to Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean series, a representative for the actor has said.

On Monday (27 June), rumours circulated that Depp was poised to reprise the role of Captain Jack Sparrow after Australian news outlet PopTopic reported an alleged deal that would see the actor return to the franchise for around $300m (£245m).

“This is made up,” a representative for the actor told NBC News (via E! News).

The possibility of Depp returning to the franchise was the subject of testimony given during a defamation trial between the actor and Amber Heard, his ex-wife. The trial concluded earlier this month (June 2022).

Depp was asked: “If Disney came to you with $300m dollars and a million alpacas, nothing on this earth would get you to go back and work with Disney on a Pirates of the Caribbean film?”

“That is true,” Depp answered.

Depp has played Captain Jack Sparrow in five films, including 2017’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. Two additional Pirates films are currently in the works and many of the star’s fans would like to see him return. An online petition calling for him to reprise his role has 800,000 signatures.

Earlier this month, a jury found that Amber Heard had defamed Depp in a Washington Post op-ed from 2018 and awarded him $10m (£8m) in compensatory damages and $5m (£4m) in punitive damages. Heard was awarded $2m (£1.6m) in compensatory damages, but no punitive damages.

Heard’s lawyer has said the actor plans to appeal.
