American Airlines Deletes First Class on International Trips

Photo: Getty Images (Getty Images)

Flying overseas in business-class or better is one of those things — like getting the Good Seats at the game — that, once you’ve done it, it’s hard to go back to coach or the bleachers. Some luxuries, you will convince yourself, are worth paying for. According to The Wall Street Journal, one such option — first-class seats on international American Airlines flights — is soon going away. American says this decision was made, in part, to add more business-class seats, which these days, are more or less what the old first-class was anyway.

American had previously said as much last month, though WSJ reports that on an earnings call on Thursday, an American executive said plainly that the airline is making the change for the simple reason that first-class isn’t selling as well as the other good seats on the plane.

“And frankly, by removing [first-class seats], we can provide more business-class seats, which is what our customers most want or are most willing to pay for,” [said Chief Commercial Officer Vasu Raj.]

[…]

…the airline will outfit its long-haul fleet with new “Flagship Suites,” which include seats that lie flat and sliding doors for privacy, in a revamp that will increase premium seating on those planes by more than 45% by 2026.

The new suites will be included on newly delivered Boeing 787-9 planes and Airbus A321 XLRs starting in 2024. American will also retrofit its Boeing 777-300ER planes to include the new suites.

The sliding door thing seems a little unnecessary, but then again people get real weird on planes, especially on long-haul trips, and some people value their privacy more than I do. More importantly, this says that many of the business-class seats lie flat, which is the real game-changer, as deplaning overseas after hours of fitful, garbage sleep in an upright chair as opposed to restful, continuous sleep lying flat makes a night-and-day difference.

This seems, in any case, mostly an exercise in branding, as “first-class” just sounds more expensive than “business-class,” which, as the WSJ notes, has most of the same benefits anyway. Is either of them worth it for you, a poor dirtbag? That is a personal decision, though I prefer to save my nickels for my destination, and arrive in London or wherever stiff as a board, having flown coach. The times I have flown first- or business-class were paid for by someone else, which was nice of them. On one such flight, I even sat next to the actress Rooney Mara once. I’m sure she was doing something a lot cooler in France than driving a dumb luxury SUV.

PnB Rock’s Younger Brother Posts & Deletes Update, Says Family Is Having Trouble Getting His Body Home

PnB Meen promised his late brother that he’ll take care of his daughters in the same post.

PnB Rock’s death took an unexpected toll on the music industry earlier this week after the 30-year-old was shot, robbed, and killed while grabbing lunch at a Los Angeles restaurant on Monday (September 12). In the days since, we’ve seen tributes pour in from not only friends and family, but fans of the “Selfish” hitmaker as well, expressing their devastation at the talented artist being taken so soon.

The late recording artist’s little brother, PnB Meen is among those who shared in the public mourning, penning a heartbreaking message on his own Instagram feed that reads, “I don’t [know] how to begin. Ima let it go… You was the only one who believed I can do what you do. I can’t stop crying bro, why [you] ain’t have me with you?”

“I always have ya back [and] front [and] sides… Please give me the strength to do this,” he continued. “With all my soul ima carry. Stand on business, [and] get you right [while you’re] resting my brother. This is my first message to you of many.”

On Saturday (September 17), Meen provided an update on Rock’s family (though it was deleted shortly after), revealing that they’ve been having some issues trying to get their loved one’s body back home from California.

“We been having trouble getting my brother back to Philadelphia,” he wrote in the caption of his upload. “The state of Los Angeles claiming they have some type of law, going against our as Muslims. Now I have no clue when his Janazah.”

Meen described the situation as “not right” and noted that “it’s going on a week” since his older sibling was fatally shot.

“Prayers up,” he ended the post. “I got you big bro, [and] ya daughters.”

RIP PnB Rock.

Striking Distance Studios’ CEO posts, then deletes, a tweet thought by some to promote crunch culture

Striking Distance Studios’ founder Glen Schofield has deleted a tweet deemed by some to have promoted “crunch” culture in games development.

In a tweet posted earlier today, Schofield – whose team is currently working on the upcoming sci-fi horror, The Callisto Protocol – talked about working 12-15 hours a day, six-seven days a week, and working over lunch and dinner, justifying it by saying “you do it because you love it”.

8 NEW Details About The Callisto Protocol – CALLISTO PROTOCOL NEW GAMEPLAY GAMESCOM 2022.

“I only talk about the game during an event,” Schofield said in the since deleted tweet. “We [are] working six-seven days a week, nobody’s forcing us.

“Exhausted, tired, covid, but we’re working,” he continues. “Bugs, glitches, perf fixes. One last pass through audio. 12-15 hour days. This is gaming. Hard work. Lunch, dinner working. You do it cause ya luv it.”

Journalist Jason Schrierer took a screenshot of the tweet ahead of its deletion, adding:

“This, from a studio head, is crunch culture defined. Of course nobody is ‘forced’ to work insane hours. But imagine the reduced bonuses and lack of promotion opportunities if you don’t? ‘You do it because you love it’. Weaponized passion. This is why people burn out of gaming.

“Such a weird coincidence how the guy bragging about how his team works 6-7 days a week for 12-15 hours a day because they love it also happens to be the guy who controls all their salaries, titles, and current employment status,” he added in a later tweet.

In related news, David Cage recently responded to allegations of unhealthy studio culture and inappropriate behaviour at Quantic Dream, which he previously described as a “smear campaign”.

“I don’t think we had an aggressive attitude,” he said. “When you’re accused of things that go against everything you believe in, everything you’ve done in your life, it hurts. It went beyond just attacking the studio culture.
