The Fighting Game Community reacts to the massive list of changes coming to Street Fighter 5’s Definitive Update

The Fighting Game community is on the verge of receiving what may be Street Fighter 5’s largest re-balancing update in the game’s six-year history, and we already know what’s going to be included thanks to the patch notes that dropped last night.

Now that the playerbase has had a chance to digest what the SF5’s Definitive Update has in store for everyone, there’s a wide range of reactions floating around from those happy seeing the buffs / nerfs incoming to others who believe a handful of the cast got away with murder.

The apparent trend of M. Bison continuing to receive improvements despite already being powerful continues with Mouz|Problem X obviously being all about it while others like PG|Punk are wondering how he keeps flying under the radar.

While there’s a lot of agreement that Alex seems much improved now, there’s much more debate if Luke is actually better of than he was at the end of Season 5 or if his changes do amount to overall nerfs to the newcomer that’s already proved himself to be quite strong already.

You can check out the full range of update reactions from a dozen or so SF5 pros and FGC heads including EQNX|Brian F,

All Street Fighter 5 balance changes we’ve spotted in the definitive update so far

Saint Patrick’s Day contained an unexpected surprise, as Capcom announced that a balance update is coming to Street Fighter 5: Champion Edition along with a number of other bells and whistles to improve the current game. The patch is set to drop on March 29, 2022, or about a week and a half from now.

The changes in the video Capcom showed go by really quickly, but we did our best to compile the alterations we saw in our most recent episode of Talk and Block. We do a character-by-character breakdown of every fighter shown, trying to determine which changes were made to each fighter ahead of the official balance update patch notes.

We cover the changes showcased for Ryu, Ed, Alex, Poison, Akuma, Gill, Ibuki, Rose, Urien, Menat, Juri, Falke, Ken, Kage, M. Bison, Sakura and Guile, 17 fighters out of the 45 cast members available in the game.

These updates are subject to change, and Street Fighter 5: Champion Edition’s current frame data was used to build out this analysis. However, it’s possible the frame data has been tweaked in unexpected ways, so not everything may match up with the patch we receive in the next 11 days.

Considering this is being labeled as the “Definitive update” for the game, we assume this will be the last major update coming to Street Fighter 5. Alas, we may see some minor balance changes surface in the summer or fall time though, as Capcom will often do some smaller updates after they drop a big patch.

Street Fighter 5 is definitely nearing the end of it’s lifespan, with Street Fighter 6 currently announced — and an expected Q1 2023 release date, we’re likely less than a year away from having the successor to SF5 in our hands.

Check out the breakdown below, and feel free to use the time stamps to skip around to the characters who interest you.

Street Fighter 5’s ‘Definitive Update’ with major balance adjustments to release March 29

It’s been announced that Street Fighter 5’s “Definitive Update” will be releasing on March 29, a week from next Tuesday. According to Street Fighter 5 Season 5’s roadmap, this upcoming update is slated to contain the game’s final batch of major balance changes.

Capcom has released a trailer that showcases a sneak peak at what will be changing in the upcoming patch. The trailer spans for about three and a half minutes, so there’s actually quite a bit of information to unpack from the showcase.

According to Capcom, this update will contain major balance changes, a cel shading filter, a pixel filter, new tracksuit colors and Cap-Jams remixes in-game. This will evidently be quite a meaty update.

Based on what’s shown in the trailer, a lot of characters are having their combo routes expanded on significantly. For example, buffs were shown for Ryu in two separate parts of the clip.

In one scene, it’s shown that Ryu will be able to dash forward a lot sooner after an fireball while V-Trigger 1 is active. It will now be possible to combo into an EX dragon punch even at mid screen.

Another part of the video showcased how Ryu’s V-Skill 2 has been improved. If Ryu is able to successfully counter an opponent with his V-Skill 2, he’ll be able to cause a wall bounce. Combined with a cancel into one of his V-Triggers, Ryu can tack on a lot of additional damage.

For other characters, certain moves that did not have EX variations now have them. Menat’s Soul Spark now has an EX version that will cause her crystal ball to stay in position. This means that Menat can activate an EX Soul Spark multiple times during a juggle.

Ibuki’s Kasumigake, her command dash and command jump special, has also gained an EX variant. When used, the EX Kasumigake will behave mostly like the heavy version (the command jump), but it will also hit opponents on the way up.

Based on what’s shown in the trailer, it feels like the average power level for the characters will be rising by quite a bit when the update rolls out. Even the top tiers seem to be getting access to extended combo routes.

As for the cel shading and pixel filters, it’s noted in the trailer that these features are for offline only. These features will not be accessible in online modes.

Check out everything that will be releasing on March 29, 2022 in the clip below:

GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition remains cursed, physical releases delayed

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy — The Definitive edition can’t quite catch a break. Despite this week’s rollout of a title update that fixes tons of bugs that marred the not-so-definitive rerelease, the news isn’t all rosy. The latest setback is a delay for the physical versions of the trilogy, with Xbox and PlayStation versions pushed back 10 days to Dec. 17, and the Nintendo Switch version coming in “early 2022,” per Rockstar Games’ Twitter account.

Released digitally in early November, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy — The Definitive Edition launched in a disastrous state that produced plenty of fodder for online mockery as the supposed remasters of the classic Grand Theft Auto trilogy — Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas — were instead subjected to all manner of visual and performance-related bugs.

Rockstar Games has since apologized for the launch, stating that it would release updates until the games “reach the level of quality they deserve to be.” The good news is, that process seems to have started.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition Reportedly Contains ‘Hot Coffee’ Code, Unlicensed Songs

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition reportedly contains not only files for unlicensed music and full game scripts with developer notes, but it also appears to contain files related to the infamous sex mini-game “hot coffee.”

As reported by VGC, these files very well may be the reason Rockstar removed the PC version of the game from its Rockstar Games Launcher. Around the trilogy’s release, the Rockstar Games Launcher was offline and wouldn’t allow anyone to play games they own through Rockstar’s service. Luckily, the launcher has been restored, but the Trilogy remains off the store.

Regarding the files in question, dataminers found what they have described as a “holy grail” of files, including most of the music that was removed from Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas due to expired licenses. The music files are still apparently in the game, they are just not in the rotation of music being played.

Also discovered was an uncompiled version of the main.scm file, which “contains all the game scripts for GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas, including cut and missing content, as well as notes from Rockstar North staff from that era.”

As for the “Hot Coffee” files, these were said to be present in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – Definitive Edition, they just weren’t active. For those who may not remember, San Andreas allows players to have sex with various girlfriends. The scene itself wasn’t very graphic, but a mini-game that was not meant to be in the final game was uncovered in 2005 that let players enter the girl’s bedroom and control Carl’s actions during sex.

This got Rockstar in a ton of trouble and caused San Andreas to be pulled from certain region’s shelves until the mod was removed. Rockstar was also hit with a lawsuit for failing to disclose the game’s sexual content. In 2009, GTA’s company Take-Two would settle the lawsuit for over $20 million.

Alongside these issues, many users have reported a range of other problems with Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, including quality concerns, Switch issues, missing elements, and more.

GTA: The Trilogy Definitive Edition removed from sale due to “unintentionally included” files

Yesterday, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition disappeared from sale on PC less than 24 hours after launch. At the same time, the Rockstar Games launcher also fell offline – the only place the PC version was available.

Now, the launcher is back, but the Definitive Edition remains unavaiable to buy or play while Rockstar “remove files unintentionally included in these versions.”
