Report: Matthew Stafford Traded from Lions to Rams in Deal for Jared Goff, Picks | Bleacher Report

Wade Payne/Associated Press

Matthew Stafford’s 12-season career with the Detroit Lions has come to an end after the team traded the 2009 No. 1 overall pick to the Los Angeles Rams for quarterback Jared Goff, two future first-round picks and a third-round selection, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Saturday.

It’s a new era in Detroit, with general manager Brad Holmes taking over the front office and head coach Dan Campbell patrolling the sidelines.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported on Jan. 23 that Stafford and the Lions had “open and healthy discussions” following the conclusion of the 2020 season, and both sides agreed the time was right to mutually part ways.

As for Stafford, a new home where he’s better positioned to compete for a Super Bowl at this stage of his career is probably the best move as opposed to taking part in a rebuild.

The 32-year-old now heads to Los Angeles after completing 64.2 percent of his passes for 26 touchdowns, 10 interceptions and 4,084 yards last year. He’s also one year removed from amassing a career-high 8.6 yards per pass attempt.

Stafford started for the Lions from Week 1 of the 2009 season onward. Although the team hasn’t enjoyed much success outside three playoff appearances, he has fared well as the Lions quarterback, completing 62.6 percent of his passes for 282 touchdowns and 144 picks.

Moreover, the Georgia product has done an excellent job forming rapports with a rotating cast of top receivers over the past few years. A Calvin Johnson-dominated core gave way to a group led by Golden Tate and Marvin Jones Jr. before Kenny Golladay took over as the team’s clear No. 1.

Now Stafford will be throwing to Cooper Kupp, Robert Woods and a new set of pass-catchers for the Rams when he moves to L.A.

Meanwhile, Los Angeles has made a seismic change at quarterback, inserting the veteran Stafford in for Goff, whom the Rams took with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft.

Goff’s numbers had taken a tumble in recent years, with his passing yards per attempt falling from 8.4 in 2018 (the team’s NFC title year) to 7.2 in 2020.

On Jan. 29, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported, “Matthew Stafford considers the Rams a viable contender in his trade market with the Lions. While it’s unclear what the Rams can do with Jared Goff’s long-term deal on the books, they’ve explored the possibilities with Stafford.”

And now that possibility is a reality, with Stafford looking to lead the Rams back to the Super Bowl.

Chicago White Sox, Carlos Rodon reach one-year, $3 million deal, source says

Carlos Rodon will return to the Chicago White Sox after the team reached a one-year, $3 million deal with the left-hander, a source told ESPN on Saturday, confirming multiple reports.

Rodon, who was selected by the White Sox with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2014 amateur draft, became a free agent after he was not tendered a contract after the 2020 season.

He broke into the majors in 2015 and looked as if he could be a key member of the team’s rotation for years to come before he was hampered by a series of injuries.

Rodon, 28, is 29-33 with a 4.14 ERA in 97 career major league games, including 92 starts. He made four appearances last season, going 0-2 with an 8.22 ERA.

Rod Stewart, son Sean reach plea deal over Florida altercation

Rod Stewart is wrapping up his legal drama.

Stewart and his son, Sean, were accused of battering a security guard at a Florida hotel on New Year’s Day 2020 when the guard barred the rocker and his son from entering a party they weren’t allowed to attend.

The guard, Jessie Dixon, alleged that Sean pushed him while the “Maggie May” singer punched him after he found the two of them and their family at a check-in table for a private party at The Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach.

Misdemeanor battery charges were brought against the two, though they will now avoid trial thanks to the plea deal, the South Florida SunSentinel reported. The terms of the deal were not released.

ROD STEWART, SON SEAN ALLEGEDLY INVOLVED IN NEW YEAR’S EVE ALTERCATION WITH RESORT EMPLOYEE, REPORT SAYS

Dixon said that Stewart, now 76, and his group were making a scene and he placed his hand on Sean’s chest, telling him to make space during the altercation, according to the SunSentinel.

Sean then allegedly got “nose to nose” with the guard and shoved him. Next came the rock star’s alleged punch to Dixon’s “left rib cage area,” according to a police report.

The police report also stated that Sean became agitated when Dixon blocked his family from attending the event “due to Dixon’s interaction with him and his family.”

Security footage of the incident led Palm Beach officer Stephen Mancino to determine that the Stewarts were the “primary aggressors” in the incident.

Additionally, two hotel employees said that they witnessed Sean push the guard.

Dixon signed an affidavit indicating he would press charges against the rocker and his son.

MLB rumors: Mets offer Trevor Bauer multi-year deal

As the Trevor Bauer sweepstakes continue to heat up, the Mets are making a serious push to add the reigning National League Cy Young Award winner to their rotation.

The Mets have reportedly made Bauer a multi-year offer of three or four years that’s less than the record $36 million average annual value for a pitcher, according to Jon Heyman of the MLB Network. The deal includes opt outs, and there’s a belief that Bauer is seeking a much longer deal after previously vowing to sign only one-year contracts.

Heyman also reports that the Dodgers have a similar interest in Bauer, though they’re eyeing a shorter-term deal. It could come down to the Mets and Dodgers as the final two teams pursuing Bauer, particularly now that the Angels appear to be out of the running. The relationship between Bauer and Angels pitching coach Mickey Callaway—who coached Bauer in Cleveland—has reportedly “eroded beyond repair,” according to Maria Torres of the Los Angeles Times.

Check out the rest of Sunday’s MLB rumors below:

  • The Cubs have signed right-handed pitcher Kohl Stewart to a one-year, $700,000 contract. Stewart, the No. 4 overall pick from the 2013 draft, has a 4.79 career ERA in 62 innings. (Bob Nightengale, USA Today)

The Twins have reached an agreement with shortstop Andrelton Simmons on a one-year deal worth $10.5 million, a source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand on Tuesday night. The club has not confirmed the move.

Simmons will take over the Twins’ full-time shortstop job, while incumbent Jorge Polanco will move to a utility role. Simmons was also reportedly the Phillies’ top target after they agreed to a deal with catcher J.T. Realmuto earlier on Tuesday.

Simmons, 31, ranks among the best defensive shortstops in recent history. He owns four Rawlings Gold Glove Awards and also took home the Platinum Glove Award (given to the best overall defender in each league) with the Braves in 2013. The Curaçao native was the Braves’ second-round pick in the 2010 MLB Draft and spent his first four Major League seasons in Atlanta before he was traded to the Angels after the ’15 season. Simmons earned his third and fourth career Gold Gloves with Los Angeles, and he finished as high as eighth in American League MVP Award voting in 2017.

Simmons has taken a step back at the plate since then, slashing .271/.318/.362 since the start of the 2019 season. He is a career .269/.317/.369 hitter with a 91 OPS+ over nine big league seasons. But Simmons does bring elite contact ability to the Twins’ powerful lineup, ranking within MLB’s top 10 percent of qualified players in both whiff rate and strikeout rate in each of the last two campaigns.

Kevin Hart Closes Deal for ‘Borderlands’ Movie

Eli Roth is directing the Borderlands movie, which also has Cate Blanchett set to star as legendary thief Lilith. Emmy-winning Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin penned the script.

“I’m thrilled to be working with Kevin,” said Roth in a statement. “Borderlands is a different kind of role for him, and we are excited to thrill audiences with a side of Kevin they’ve never seen before. He’s going to be an amazing Roland.”

Added Nathan Kahane, President of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group: “Kevin has been behind some of the world’s biggest blockbusters, and our source material is inspired by one of the world’s best-selling video games. We love the way our filmmaking team has adapted this story and we couldn’t be in better creative hands.”

The Borderlands video game launched in 2009 to acclaim, with Gearbox Software and publisher 2K debuting Borderlands 3 in September 2019. The series has sold more than 66 million units.

Avi Arad and Ari Arad are producing Borderlands via their Arad Productions banner. Erik Feig is producing through Picturstart.  The executive producers are Randy Pitchford, executive producer of the Borderlands video game franchise and founder of the Gearbox Entertainment Company, and Strauss Zelnick, chairman and CEO of Take-Two Interactive.

Hart last appeared on the big screen in 2019’s Jumanji: The Next Level, and has a number of projects in the pipeline, including the action-comedy Man from Toronto, which he has wrapped opposite Woody Harrelson and Kaley Cuoco. He has also wrapped on Fatherhood, which follows a man whose wife dies shortly after childbirth. In November, Hart and Netflix launched his latest comedy special, No F**s Given, and earlier this month, he inked a rich film and first-look deal with the streaming service.

Hart is repped by UTA.

Boris Johnson urges new trade deal in first call with President Biden

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson urged President Biden to strike a new trade deal with the UK in a phone call on Saturday, marking the first official discussion between the two world leaders since Biden was sworn in.

Johnson “reiterated his intention to resolve existing trade issues as soon as possible” and discussed “the benefits of a potential free trade deal” with Biden, according to a statement from Downing Street reported by the Associated Press.

Johnson, a one-time Trump ally who distanced himself from the former president during his final term, also congratulated Biden on rejoining the Paris climate agreement and World Health Organization, two reversals of moves made by Trump.

“Great to speak to President @JoeBiden this evening,” Johnson tweeted Saturday.

“I look forward to deepening the longstanding alliance between our two countries as we drive a green and sustainable recovery from COVID-19.”

The Biden administration has stated in recent weeks that it is not ready to commit to any new trade deals.

“President Biden has been clear that he will not sign any new free trade agreements before the U.S. makes major investments in American workers and our infrastructure,” Treasury secretary nominee Janet Yellen said earlier this week.

The call with Johnson was at least Biden’s third with a foreign leader since taking office on Wednesday; the president spoke with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Friday.
