Jacob deGrom to miss Opening Day

JUPITER, Fla. — Even before the Mets uncovered details about the stress reaction in Jacob deGrom’s right shoulder, which will cost him his Opening Day start and most likely the first two months of the season, a somber mood hung over the clubhouse in Port St. Lucie. There was an edge to the room; everybody wanted to know what was wrong with deGrom.

When the results of deGrom’s MRI became public hours later, Mets officials alternated between expressing disappointment in the situation and confidence that they can move on successfully enough without him.

“Everybody has adversity,” general manager Billy Eppler said. “Everybody does. Every team, all the time. So you deal with these things. Would we have loved to have had Jake out there on Opening Day? Yeah, absolutely. But we understand that this is what teams go through. So that’s what we’ll do. We’ll manage it and move forward.”

deGrom underwent an MRI on Friday morning, a day after he alerted Mets trainers to tightness in the back of his right shoulder. That test showed a stress reaction in his scapula, which caused inflammation in the area. deGrom will refrain from throwing for up to four weeks, after which point the club will re-evaluate his progress.

While the Mets noted in a statement that deGrom could theoretically begin throwing before the four-week period expires, Eppler clarified that he will almost certainly sit out a full month. If all goes well and a follow-up MRI comes back clean, deGrom will still likely need another month to ramp up at that point. Thus, the beginning of June is a realistic best-case scenario for his return.

“He’s disappointed,” Eppler said. “We’re disappointed. Everybody’s sharing the disappointment right now. Nobody’s immune to that.”

In the short term, Max Scherzer is the obvious candidate to fill in for deGrom on Opening Day, though neither Eppler nor manager Buck Showalter would commit to that assignment. Scherzer has been dealing with a hamstring issue, a source confirmed, but it is mild enough that he’s still scheduled to throw seven innings in an intrasquad game Saturday. So long as he emerges from that outing without issue and is willing to forego the extra day of rest he would have received before his season debut, Scherzer should be fine for Opening Day. If the Mets choose to go another direction, they could manipulate their rotation to have any of their healthy starters pitch.

As for deGrom’s rotation spot, Tylor Megill, David Peterson and Trevor Williams are the primary candidates to replace him. Of that group, Megill has impressed the most this spring, catching Showalter’s eye with his size, his stuff, and his spring results: 6 2/3 shutout innings to date.

The Mets do not, according to Eppler, intend to acquire another starter from outside the organization.

“[deGrom] is really good at what he does, and we won’t have that for a period of time, but now an opportunity presents itself for somebody to step forward,” Showalter said.

No matter whom the Mets swap in for deGrom, they understand they can never truly replace a two-time Cy Young Award winner who has produced a 1.94 ERA in 91 starts since the beginning of the 2018 season. The trouble for him has simply been staying healthy. Injuries are nothing new to deGrom, who missed the entire second half of last season due to inflammation in his right elbow and forearm, and who has endured back, elbow and shoulder scares throughout the past two years. He pitched only 27 times during those seasons.

According to Showalter, deGrom felt fine during a routine game of catch Thursday until his last couple of throws. He likewise looked strong over his first two Grapefruit League starts, allowing one run in five innings with 10 strikeouts. deGrom had also made some concessions in the name of staying healthy, lifting slightly heavier weights this winter and dialing back his velocity a few ticks in spring. But the revamped workout program was unable to keep deGrom on the field.

According to Dr. James Gladstone, the chief of sports medicine at Mt. Sinai Health System, nothing is more important for stress reactions than rest.

“It’s more or less an overuse injury,” Gladstone said, describing it as bruising along the bone where the muscle attaches to it. “I think a lot of times, particularly in pitchers, it may be mechanics. Something’s off, and it causes a person to throw a little differently than they have been in the past.”

Gladstone estimated that a full recovery could take up to six weeks. The Mets hope that deGrom can heal sooner, but they won’t rush things.

“We’re going to do everything we can to support him in every which way we can,” Eppler said. “Jake’s a resilient person. With time, things heal. And so this is another situation where in some time, we’ll have him healed and we’ll get him back on the hill.”

In the interim, the Mets will cope — a process that began with their messaging following deGrom’s latest diagnosis.

“The sky is not falling,” Showalter cautioned as a group of reporters left his office. “It’s just raining.”

Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon switch late-night shows in April Fool’s Day prank

Late-night TV hosts Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel swapped talk shows and networks in an elaborate April Fool’s Day prank on Friday.

it was a confusing tale of two Jimmys for audiences after Fallon flew to Hollywood to host “Jimmy Kimmel Live” on ABC, while Kimmel sat in for Fallon on NBC’s “The Tonight Show.”

Fallon and Kimmel sat at each other’s desks and did some of each other’s recurring bits as part of the epic switcheroo, which was a complete surprise to the shocked studio audiences at 30 Rock and the El Capitan Entertainment Centre.

The Roots remained in New York to warm up the crowd for Kimmel, whose sidekick Guillermo Rodriguez stayed in Tinseltown to serve up Fallon with punchlines.

“I love being here in New York. I want to tell you about this crazy thing that happened in LA this week. So um, you know the actor Will Smith? Oh you’ve heard this story? I didn’t know if it made it east, I’ll skip it then,” Kimmel cracked.

“Are you figuring out what’s happening now? You’re noticing what day it is? Or no, maybe … April Fool’s everybody.”

In Los Angeles, Justin Timberlake came out disguised as Matt Damon, and Fallon asked him to leave an autograph.

“Jimmy Kimmel would love it if you signed something. But then I was thinking about it, Jimmy would really want something more from Matt Damon if he was on the show,” Fallon said.

“Can you tag his desk?”

Timberlake, clad in Red Sox apparel with a blond wig, obliged, spray painting “I [heart] Matt Damon on Kimmel’s desk.

In a bewildering musical gag, the Red Hot Chili Peppers appeared on both shows to mark Friday’s release of their first album in six years, playing “These Are the Ways” from the Roosevelt Hotel in LA and “Black Summer” in the 30 Rock studio.

Both programs pretape their nightly shows in front of a live studio audience.

AP PHOTOS on Day 37: Remnants of fighting left behind

By The Associated Press

April 1, 2022 GMT

On the outskirts of Kyiv, Ukrainian soldiers approach a trench used by Russian soldiers as they retake the area. One soldier embraces his wife after conducting a sweep for remnants of Russian troops after their withdrawal.

Destroyed armored vehicles from both armies lie in streets and fields. Scattered military gear covers the ground next to an abandoned Russian tank outside Kyiv. And a Ukrainian solider checks the charred remnants of a another tank in front of houses in Irpin, close to Kyiv.

Civilians also take stock of the damage more than a month into the invasion. One woman stands by a crater left by a bomb that hit her yard. A man surveys a bridge destroyed by Russian soldiers upon their retreat. Yet another gathers armloads of debris from demolished buildings.

Horsemode in Among Us is real and will last only for April Fools Day

If you ever wonder what playing Among Us is like as a horse rather than a beany crewmate, wonder no more! Innersloth has listened to fans and has created Horsemode for Among Us, and yes this is real. Horsemode is an April Fools joke, but it’s also a real mode that players can play. It is essentially normal Among Us, except you’re a horse. The mode is available right now and will last only until the end of April 1.

Innersloth further elaborates on what the Horsemode will entail on its blog. There will be a “neigh” kill sound voiced by Innersloth programmer Gary. Initially, the developers were going to use a real horse sound and only used Gary’s voice clip as a placeholder. But then they realized that Gary’s voice was better and kept it. There will also be a new kill animation for imposters that are described as being “anti-climatic.”

The Horse crewmates can only wear hats and visors; they cannot wear pants. Innersloth also writes that players should expect some janky-ness since the mode is mostly just a joke rather than a true mode that can be played all year long.

The idea of Horsemode came about from a tweet that Innersloth published in 2021. The tweet has an image of a horse crewmate and the words “what if.” It seems as if the developers at Innersloth took that as a challenge. Players who log in to Among Us at the moment will also score themselves the Ghostface costume from the Scream series, a tie in to promote the DVD and Blu-ray release of Scream (2022).

New Bucs coach Todd Bowles wins day by admitting he ‘blew it’

TAMPA — To triumph at the news conference, he first had to admit defeat. In that sense, Todd Bowles nailed it, with candor and conciseness.

“I blew it,” the new Bucs head coach said Thursday.

Know this about 58-year-old Todd Robert Bowles: While different in myriad ways from predecessor Bruce Arians, both share the blunt gene. It’s a trait generally appreciated by a fan base, a refreshing alternative to rehearsed rhetoric.

Which is why the married dad of three boys likely won points his first day on the job by readily acknowledging the failure of the Bucs’ final defensive play of the 2021 season, in the NFC division playoff.

Instead of dancing around or dodging the question of why he called for a Cover-Zero, all-out blitz of Matthew Stafford — resulting in the Rams quarterback finding NFL Offensive Player of the Year Cooper Kupp isolated downfield for a 44-yard completion — this former NFL safety safety tackled it helmet first.

“We were trying to win,” said Bowles, whose strategy resulted in Matt Gay kicking a 30-yard field goal as time expired to lift Los Angeles to a 30-27 triumph.

“I will never apologize for trying to win. If I didn’t call zone and (Stafford) got the play off, you’ll say I should’ve blitzed. ‘We blitz all the time, how come we didn’t blitz?’ That’s part of football, that’s coaching. You have to learn to make peace and live with it.”

In a way, Bowles’ introduction as the franchise’s 13th head coach — and its fourth Black head coach — simply perpetuated the most surreal offseason in team history. Less than 24 hours before, he remained the convenient scapegoat for one of the most excruciating losses this town had experienced.

On Thursday, he still was processing the fact that he had been afforded a rare second act as an NFL head coach, with a five-year contract to boot.

“A lot of people had to be in agreement for this to happen. It’s not a one-man show,” Bowles said of the succession plan allowing Arians to pass the torch to the New Jersey native he has known since 1983, when Arians first coached him at Temple.

“I feel very humble, I feel very honored, I feel very excited. I’m ready to go and we’ll try to get this thing rolling.”

If nothing else, Bowles will roll his own way.

Unlike Arians, who made ‘Win or lose, we booze’ a half-serious mantra on his watch, Bowles doesn’t drink or do cigars. And whereas Arians’ practice reprimands were laced with profanities, Bowles is more likely to point out player deficiencies with dry sarcasm.

“I think if I tried to put on a kangol hat and came in here and grew my goatee (both Arians trademarks), you guys would look at me like I’m crazy,” Bowles said. “‘Look at this clown, he’s mini-Bruce.’ I can’t do that, and I’m not going to. I’m not going to try.”

Similarly, Arians didn’t orchestrate this succession plan — which Bowles didn’t learn about until Monday — to replace himself with a clone. To the contrary, he knew Bowles’ own unique style, combined with his football intuition and the lessons he learned in his first head coaching gig with the Jets from 2015-2018 (when he went 24-40), gave him every chance to succeed.

The Bucs’ offseason developments, namely Tom Brady’s un-retirement and the subsequent re-signing of several key free agents, optimized those chances.

“He’s been probably the brightest guy I’ve ever coached,” Arians said. “And I think he, as a player-coach, (offensive coordinator) Byron (Leftwich) as a player-coach, they just had it. You knew they had it.”

By all accounts, that ‘it’ factor is endearing.

“He’s a phenomenal person, great family man, talks about his family all the time,” general manager Jason Licht said.

“He’s a mentor to a lot of people in this building. Not just the players, but other coaches, staff members. You often find people in his office, just him offering advice on how to just be a better person.”

Because he now must answer for the Bucs offense and monitor it in practice, Bowles said defensive line coach Kacy Rodgers and outside linebackers coach Larry Foote will serve as co-coordinators, though Bowles still will call things on Sundays.

And while he won’t disrupt the dynamic fostered by Leftwich and Tom Brady, he’ll interject where he sees fit, thank you very much.

“I’m the head coach,” Bowles said. “I get to do whatever I want.”

The blunt gene at work.

“My way is not rocket science. It’s like every other coach: You coach hard, you understand players, you try to put them in the best position to play football,” he added.

“So I’m not trying to change the program, but you try to say you’ve got to be yourself. You try to imitate somebody else, it doesn’t go well.”

Asteroid 2007 FF1 LIVE – ‘April Fool’s Day’ space rock to make close approach with Earth THIS WEEK, Nasa says

ANOTHER asteroid will make a “close approach” this week and is being watched by space enthusiasts.

Asteroid 2007 FF1 is expected to make a close and safe encounter with our planet on April 1, according to space trackers, but is still considered “potentially hazardous.”

Any object that comes within 4.65 million miles of us is considered “potentially hazardous” by cautious space organizations, and the April Fool’s asteroid will pass within 4.6million miles of our planet.

Meanwhile, Asteroid 2013 BO76 hurtled past Earth on Thursday, March 24, at a staggering 30,000 miles per hour, according to Nasa trackers.

At up to 450 meters across, it’s roughly the same size as the Empire State Building and fortunately, the speedy object missed our planet by some distance.

It was estimated to fly by at a safe distance of around 3.1million miles, according to data on Nasa’s Near-Earth Object database.

  • What is a meteorite?

If a meteoroid enters the Earth’s atmosphere, it begins to vaporize and becomes a meteor.

On Earth, it’ll look like a streak of light in the sky, because the rock is burning up, and it may look like a fireball or “shooting star.”

If a meteoroid doesn’t vaporize completely and survives the trip through Earth’s atmosphere, however, it can land on Earth and becomes a meteorite.

  • Difference between asteroids, meteors, and comets, part three

Like asteroids, a comet orbits the Sun.

However, rather than being made mostly of rock, a comet contains lots of ice and gas, which can result in amazing tails forming behind them as a result of the ice and dust vaporizing.

“They range from a few miles to tens of miles wide, but as they orbit closer to the Sun, they heat up and spew gases and dust into a glowing head that can be larger than a planet,” Nasa reported.

  • Difference between asteroids, meteors, and comets, continued

When two asteroids hit each other, the small chunks that break off are called meteoroids.

“Meteoroids are objects in space that range in size from dust grains to small asteroids. Think of them as ‘space rocks,’” Nasa reported.

  • Difference between asteroids, meteors, and comets

An asteroid is a small rocky body that orbits the Sun.

They are “rocky, airless remnants left over from the early formation of our solar system about 4.6 billion years ago,” Nasa reveals.

Most are found in the asteroid belt (between Mars and Jupiter).

But they can be found anywhere, including in a path that can impact Earth.

  • Asteroid mystery solved, continued

Currently, the theory is that Ryugu originated from debris left by the collision of two larger asteroids, but that doesn’t explain why the asteroid is so high in organic content, Newsweek noted.

New findings published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters suggest Ryugu is, in fact, the remains of a dead or extinguished comet.

The new theory involves the comet losing its ice content in a way that could have ended up with it having the “unique characteristics” it does.

Lead author Miura told Newsweek: “Depending on whether Ryugu was originally an asteroid or a comet, it experienced a very different environment.”

“Asteroids formed in warm regions relatively close to the sun. On the other hand, comets formed in a cooler environment away from the sun.”

“To assume off the top of one’s head that Ryugu was originally an asteroid is to overlook the possibility that Ryugu may have been in a cold environment.”

  • Asteroid mystery solved?

Researchers may have “solved mysteries surrounding the origins of the spinning top-shaped asteroid Ryugu,” Newsweek reported.

In fact, it may actually be the remnants of a dead comet.

Space mission Hayabusa2 returned samples and images from the space rock Asteroid 162173, also known as Ryugu, in 2020.

It is classified as a potentially hazardous asteroid by NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Objects Studies.

Data from that mission showed that the asteroid has a “spinning top shape,” and that it is “a loose pile of gravitationally bound rubble” with plentiful organic material.

  • What is an exoplanet?

Exoplanets are planets outside of our Solar System. Thousands have been discovered since the 1980s.

In addition to being possible locations of extraterrestrial life, they provide opportunities to better understand the evolution of the universe.

According to Nasa’s exoplanet database, of the ten exoplanets found this year, six are larger than Jupiter.

  • TESS prediction

A paper published online last month predicted the number of exoplanets that TESS will find over the course of its seven-year mission.

According to scientists, the agency’s exoplanet-hunting spacecraft will uncover upwards of 12,000 exoplanets by 2024.

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology made their calculations using data collected by the $287million spacecraft to date.

  • What TESS has found so far

So far, TESS has found nearly 5,000 worlds of all shapes and sizes, including gas giants, Neptune-like ice worlds, and so-called Super-Earths.

A Super-Earth has a mass higher than our planet’s below those of the ice giants Uranus and Neptune.

  • The search for alien life

Launched four years ago, the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) is a space telescope designed to search for undiscovered worlds.

It’s searching an area of sky 400 times larger than that covered by the Kepler mission, in a bid to find candidates that could host alien life.

  • How far was Asteroid 138971 from Earth?

It shot past us on March 4 from an estimated distance of 3million miles away.

In comparison, the Moon is only about 238,900 miles from us.

A few million miles may sound pretty far away but it’s actually quite close in terms of space.

  • What is Asteroid 138971?

Asteroid 138971 (2001 CB21) was said to be up to 4,265 feet wide.

That made it almost three times as big as the Empire State Building.

The Empire State Building stands at around 1,453 feet tall so would pale in comparison to Asteroid 138971 (2001 CB21).

Nasa had put the asteroid on its “Earth Close Approaches” list.

  • Asteroid-pulverizing system, part three

The professor’s PI System is being designed to rocket up to a close asteroid and penetrate it with rods if necessary. Those rods would contain explosives that could be set off and tear the asteroid apart before it hit Earth.

Lubin would like the asteroid chunks to be less than 33 feet in diameter, should such an explosion need to occur.

Those space rocks should then form a cloud of debris that could still hit the Earth, but the hope is that a lot of it would break up in Earth’s atmosphere instead.

The effectiveness of the PI System would depend on things like asteroid size and how close it is to Earth at the time of the “pulverizing.”

Lubin says his system could even orbit Earth one day and be ready for any surprise doomsday asteroids that have the potential to come our way.

  • Asteroid-pulverizing system, continued

Prof Lubin thinks it would be our best chance of protecting Earth from a devastating asteroid collision.

According to Universe Today, the professor previously presented his defense system at the 2021 Planetary Defence Conference and his idea got spotted by Nasa.

He’s now a Phase One awardee in the Nasa Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) program.

Lubin previously observed: “So far, humanity has been spared large-scale catastrophe as was visited upon our previous tenants, but counting upon being ‘lucky’ is a poor strategy in the longer term.”

We don’t want to go the way of the dinosaurs, after all.

  • Asteroid-pulverizing system

Professor Philip Lubin from the University of California Santa Barbara is making something he calls the PI-Terminal Defense for Humanity.

The PI part stands for “Pulverize It”.

A simple explanation of the system is that a rocket with lots of explosive rods would approach a large incoming asteroid and smash it into tiny pieces.

Those small rocky pieces would then rain down on Earth and hopefully burn up in the atmosphere.

  • When is the next major asteroid close encounter?

Another major asteroid is expected to closely pass Earth on May 15, according to Newsweek.

CNEOS data shows that asteroid 2012 UX68 will be about 654,000 miles away from Earth, which is about 2.7 times farther away than the moon.

The asteroid will have a maximum estimated diameter of around 300 feet.

  • 2023 asteroid turns out to be safe

The finding of a potentially deadly asteroid earlier this year sent scientists on an emotional roller coaster.

Astronomers at Arizona’s Mount Lemmon Observatory detected a 70-meter-wide asteroid on January 6, 2022.

Based on their early observations, this object looked to have a chance of colliding with Earth on its next visit, on July 4, 2023.

Because any ambiguities in an asteroid’s orbit are greatest in the hours following its discovery, astronomers from a variety of observatories hurried to perform follow-up observations.

Luckily, the asteroid was ruled not to be a threat.

  • London Eye-sized

Science Times noted that the asteroid passing Earth last Thursday was “approximately three times larger than the London Eye.”

  • Relatable distance

On Twitter, IFL Science shared a hilarious comparison in regards to the size of the asteroid that passed Earth on March 24.

“An asteroid is on course to pass Earth today at a mere distance of 3,180,000 miles!” the tweet read.

“This chunk of space rock measures in at a whopping 850ft diameter – or in terms we can all understand, 2,237 ferrets.”

  • Types of asteroids: M-types

The M-type asteroids (nickel-iron) are made of metal. The compositional variations between asteroids are linked to how distant they originated from the Sun.

After they formed and partially melted, some endured tremendous temperatures, with iron sinking to the center and driving basaltic (volcanic) lava to the surface.

  • Types of asteroids: S-types

S-type (stony) asteroids are made up of nickel-iron silicate minerals.

  • Types of asteroids: C-Type

C-Type (chondrite) are the most common asteroids. They are most likely made up of clay and silicate rocks and have a black look. They are among the solar system’s oldest ancient things.

  • April Fool’s Day

Space experts have said that a “potentially hazardous” asteroid is set to approach the Earth on Friday, April 1.

Astronomers say the closest that the Apollo-class asteroid could get is about 4.6million miles away.

  • St Patrick’s Day asteroids, continued

A 78 foot asteroid called 2022 EU3 was the last close approach asteroid to shoot past Earth on St Patrick’s Day.

Asteroid 2022 EU3 came within 3.4 million miles of Earth.

The other two asteroids to make the St Paddy’s Day list were called 2022 EM6 and 2022 EU6.

They’re said to be about 200 feet and 183 feet large, respectively.

  • St Patrick’s Day asteroids

Before Asteroid 2013 BO76 flew by, Nasa was watching five close approach asteroids around St Patrick’s Day.

All of the asteroids made their close approaches to Earth that morning.

Asteroid 2019 PH1 was the largest at 203 feet wide.

The closest approach came from a slightly smaller space rock called 2022 EL6.

Biden considering releasing 1 million barrels per day from strategic reserves

A plan being considered involves releasing around 1 million barrels per day from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve for the coming months, a person familiar with the deliberations says.

The announcement could come as soon as Thursday, when Biden is scheduled to deliver remarks from the White House on gas prices.

Biden earlier in the month announced a coordinated release of oil from the reserves in conjunction with other nations. He also released around 60 million barrels in November, which he said at the time was the largest release from the reserve in US history.
Tapping the reserve — the stockpile of 600 million barrels of crude oil stored in underground salt caverns in Louisiana and Texas — generally has only a limited effect on gas prices because of how much oil can be released at a time, but would act as a political sign that Biden is continuing to confront the problem.
Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the US price of regular gasoline spiked, hitting a record high of $4.33 a gallon earlier in March.

In remarks earlier this month, Biden sought to put the onus for the rising prices on Russia’s President: “Make no mistake: The current spike in gas prices is largely the fault of Vladimir Putin.”

Governors across the US have been attempting to curb gas prices at the state level.
Last week, California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom rolled out a $9 billion proposal to hand out $400 debit cards to drivers in the state to help soften the impact of the highest gas prices in the country. In Georgia, Republican Gov. Brian Kemp — who is facing one of the toughest reelection races in the country — signed a bill that will give $250 to $500 tax refunds to Georgians — a move several of his rivals blasted as election-year politicking. And as Democratic Gov. Janet Mills faces a competitive reelection campaign in Maine, she has proposed some of the most generous relief to qualified taxpayers in her state — in the form of $850 checks — to cushion the blow of inflation and gas prices.

At a private zoo in the village, workers and soldiers attempt to evacuate the surviving animals, wrangling ostriches and carrying a stressed pony to a truck. They were forced to halt when shelling resumed between Russian and Ukrainian forces in the area.

On Wednesday, Russian forces bombarded areas around Kyiv just hours after pledging to scale back operations to promote trust between the two sides, Ukrainian authorities said.
