Russia-Ukraine war at a glance: what we know on day 341 of the invasion | Russia

  • Russian shelling of residential areas in Ukraine’s southern city of Kherson left at least three people dead and ten injured, local authorities said. The Kherson regional military administration said on its Telegram channel that Russian forces targeted a hospital, school, bus station, post office, bank and residential buildings in a strike on Sunday.

  • A missile hit an apartment building in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city, killing one person and injuring three others, according to the regional governor. Oleh Synehubov said the missile struck the city centre on Sunday, and that an elderly woman’s body was pulled from the rubble. He said 15 residents of the building were evacuated immediately after the explosion, and will be provided with temporary accomodation.

  • Ukraine’s military and Russia’s Wagner private military group are both claiming to have control in the area of Blahodatne, eastern Donetsk region. “Units of Ukraine’s defence forces repelled the attacks of the occupiers in the areas of … Blahodatne … in the Donetsk region,” Ukraine’s military reported, adding its forces also repelled attacks in 13 other settlements in the Donetsk region. Wagner, designated by the US as transnational criminal organisation, said on the Telegram messaging app on Saturday that its units had taken control of Blahodatne.

  • The leader of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), Denis Pushilin, has said that pro-Russian forces are continuing to make advances in Vuhledar.

  • President Tayyip Erdoğan signalled that Turkey may agree to Finland joining Nato without Sweden, amid growing tensions with Stockholm. “We may deliver Finland a different message [on their Nato application] and Sweden would be shocked when they see our message. But Finland should not make the same mistake Sweden did,” Erdoğan said in a televised speech aired on Sunday. Sweden and Finland applied last year to join Nato and need all member countries’ approval to join. Turkey and Hungary are holding out.

  • Volodymyr Zelenskiy has stepped up his campaign to keep Russian athletes out of the 2024 Paris Games. Ukraine’s president said he had sent a letter to Emmanuel Macron, and that allowing Russia to compete would be tantamount to showing that “terror is somehow acceptable”.

  • Ukraine’s foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba added to the pressure on Monday, saying “Russia won 71 medals in Tokyo Olympics. 45 of them were won by athletes who are also members of the Central Sports Club of the Russian Army. The army that commits atrocities, kills, rapes, and loots. This is whom the ignorant IOC wants to put under white flag allowing to compete.”

  • The Kremlin said on Monday that former British prime minister Boris Johnson was lying when he said Putin had threatened him with a missile strike during a phone call in the run-up to the invasion of Ukraine. Putin’s spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, told reporters that what Johnson said was not true, or “more precisely, a lie”. Johnson, who has repeatedly been accused of dishonesty during his political career, was speaking to the BBC for a documentary, and said the Russian leader had threatened him with a missile strike that would “only take a minute”.

  • Authorities in Slovenia have apprehended two alleged Russian spies who used an agency dealing in real estate and antiques as a front for their activities, local media reported on Monday.

  • Russia’s foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said it cannot be ruled out that Poland and the Baltic states may break off diplomatic relations with the Russian Federation entirely. Describing them as states where “a frenzied Russophobic campaign has been unfolding for a long time”, he said “we are not in favour of breaking diplomatic relations. Even in the most difficult situation, it is necessary to maintain channels for dialogue, resolving issues of our fellow citizens and compatriots. If this happens, then the responsibility for this step and its consequences will fall entirely on the leadership of these states. We intend to firmly defend our national interests, and opponents must understand that their actions will have long-term consequences.”

  • Ukrainian prime minister, Denys Shmyhal, has told the Politico website that he wants the country to join the European Union within two years.

  • Vyacheslav Gladkov, the governor of the Belgorod region in Russia, has said that shelling of Bezliudovka from Ukraine had injured two people.

  • Nato secretary general Jens Stoltenberg has urged South Korea to increase military support to Ukraine, suggesting it reconsider its policy of not exporting weapons to countries in conflict.

  • Vladimir Putin was open to contacts with Germany’s chancellor, Olaf Scholz, though no phone call was scheduled, a Kremlin spokesperson told the state Ria Novosti news agency. Scholz told the Berlin daily Tagesspiegel: “I will also speak to Putin again – because it is necessary to speak.”

  • Kyiv and its western allies are engaged in “fast-track” talks on the possibility of equipping Ukraine with long-range missiles and military aircraft, a top aide to Ukraine’s president said. Mykhailo Podolyak said Ukraine’s supporters in the west “understand how the war is developing” and the need to supply planes capable of providing cover for armoured vehicles the US and Germany have pledged.

  • US military officials are reportedly urging the Pentagon to supply F-16 jets to Ukraine so it is better able to defend itself from Russian missiles and drones.

  • Scholz reiterated on Sunday that Germany will not send fighter jets. “I can only advise against entering into a constant bidding war when it comes to weapons systems,” Scholz said in an interview with the Tagesspiegel newspaper. “If, as soon as a decision [on tanks] has been made, the next debate starts in Germany, that doesn’t come across as serious and undermines citizens’ confidence in government decisions.”

  • Ukraine has imposed sanctions against 182 Russian and Belarusian companies, and three individuals, in the latest of a series of steps to block Moscow’s and Minsk’s connections to Ukraine. The sanctioned companies chiefly engage in the transportation of goods, vehicle leasing and chemical production, according to the list published by Ukraine’s national security and defence council.

Pathaan Full Movie Collection: Pathaan early box office estimates Day 5: Shah Rukh Khan starrer breaks own record with Rs 65 crore collecton; domestic total to shoot past Rs 275 crore mark

There’s just no stopping Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Pathaan’ at the box office. The film which opened to record-breaking numbers on Wednesday, January 25 saw phenomenal growth at the domestic box office on Sunday.
According to a report on boxofficeindia.com, the early estimates of the film are reported to be around Rs 65 crore nett, but a lot depends on the collections of the night shows. Nonetheless, the film is expected to come out victorious by registering an impressive Rs 275 crore nett weekend.

The numbers recorded thus far, are just from the original Hindi format, there will be an additional Rs 8-9 crore nett collection from regional sectors.

The report also stated that hitting the Rs 275 crore milestone has been ‘unthinkable’ even for a lifetime collection of a Bollywood release. The last time a Hindi release hit the target was during the release of the Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff starrer ‘WAR’ that hit screens in 2019. Coincidently the film was helmed by the same director Siddharth Anand.

The report further adds that the smaller B and C centres, including single screens, have been registering big numbers, adding to the success of the film. While the collections coming in on Sunday are expected to be better than the opening day numbers, it remains to be seen if the film will surpass the mammoth Republic day collections of an estimated Rs 70 crore.

Meanwhile, in metros and some of the other bigger centres, the collections are expected to slow down.

“Pathaan,” starring Shah Rukh Kha in his first role in five years, settled in fifth place with $5.9 million from only 695 screens.

According to Variety, the film is smashing records at the box office in North America – the most prominent one being that the film landed the biggest opening day gross ever for a Hindi-language production on January 25. The report further stated that ‘Pathaan’ drew an estimated USD 1.86 million opening day gross across 694 locations in North America, marking the best per-theatre average for any current release.

Adani’s $2.5 billion share sale faces crucial day after rout

NEW DELHI, Jan 29 (Reuters) – Gautam Adani faces a critical day on Monday with his flagship company’s $2.5 billion share sale’s second day of bidding overshadowed by a $48 billion rout in the Indian billionaire’s stocks which was sparked by a U.S. short seller’s report.

Seven listed companies belonging to the Adani conglomerate, which is led by Asia’s richest man, saw sharp falls in their values after Hindenburg Research report last week flagged concerns about high debt levels and the use of tax havens.

Adani Group issued a detailed response late on Sunday, saying it complies with all local laws and had made necessary regulatory disclosures. It has called the report baseless and said it was considering taking action against Hindenburg.

For 60-year-old Adani, the stock market meltdown has been a dramatic setback for a school-dropout who rose swiftly in recent years to become the world’s third richest man, before slipping to rank seventh on the Forbes list last week.

The secondary share sale by Adani Enterprises (ADEL.NS) opened for retail and institutional investors on Friday, but saw only 1% subscriptions as the company’s stock fell 11% below the minimum offer price.

Adani Group told Reuters in a statement on Saturday that the sale remains on schedule at the planned issue price, even as sources said bankers on the country’s largest secondary share sale were considering extending the timeline beyond Jan. 31, or tweaking the price due to the fall in its share price.

“It is important for the Adani Group to ensure the share sale goes through — If they stick to the price and don’t reduce it, and the stock doesn’t bounce back, nobody will be keen to apply,” said Mumbai-based market analyst, Ambareesh Baliga, who advises various family offices.

    “Monday’s trade will be critical.”

In a separate statement on Sunday, Adani Group’s chief financial officer Jugeshinder Singh said it is focused on the share sale and is confident it will sail through. He also said its anchor investors have shown faith and remain invested.

    ‘FREE FALL’

Some Adani Group stocks have surged more than 1,500% in the last three years amid aggressive expansion in businesses that include ports, power generation, airports and mining.

Adani Enterprises has set a floor price of 3,112 rupees per share and a cap of 3,276 rupees for the secondary share sale – well above their close of 2,761.45 rupees on Friday.

Arun Kejriwal, founder of Kejriwal Research & Investment, said investors were likely to wait until the last day of the share sale to see if the price band is tweaked.

“I expect that the free fall seen of Friday may abate but recovery back towards a level prior to this fall may be difficult,” he added.

Indian regulations say the share offering must receive minimum subscription of 90%, and if it does not the issuer must refund the entire amount.

Maybank Securities and Abu Dhabi Investment Authority are among investors who bid for the anchor portion of the issue.

On Saturday, index provider MSCI said it was seeking feedback from market participants on Adani and was monitoring the factors that “may impact the eligibility of those relevant securities” in MSCI indexes.

There are at least six Adani Group companies in the MSCI India Index, with a cumulative weight of 4.31%.

Russia-Ukraine war at a glance: what we know on day 340 of the invasion | World news

  • The European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen, said ahead of an EU-Ukraine summit next week that Ukraine had unconditional support from the bloc and needed to prevail against Russian attacks to defend European values. “We stand by Ukraine’s side without any ifs and buts. Ukraine is fighting for our shared values, it is fighting for the respect of international law and for the principles of democracy and that is why Ukraine has to win this war.”

  • A Russian strike killed three people in a residential district of the eastern Ukrainian city of Kostiantynivka on Saturday, the regional governor said. Fourteen other people were wounded in the attack, which also damaged four apartment buildings and a hotel. According to Ukraine’s defence ministry, Russia carried out attacks on Konstantynivka with multiple rocket launchers.

  • Russia accused the Ukrainian military of deliberately striking a hospital in a Russian-held area of eastern Ukraine on Saturday. It said a strike killed 14 people and wounded 24 patients and medical staff. The strike hit a hospital in the Russian-held settlement of Novoaidar and was carried out using a US-supplied Himars rocket launch system, the Russian defence ministry said. The claims could not be independently verified, AP reported.

  • Kyiv and its western allies are engaged in “fast-track” talks on the possibility of equipping Ukraine with long-range missiles and military aircraft, a top aide to Ukraine’s president says, AP reported. Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Volodymyr Zelenskiy, said Ukraine’s supporters in the west “understand how the war is developing” and the need to supply planes capable of providing cover for the armoured fighting vehicles that the United States and Germany have pledged.

  • Ukraine said on Friday it would take its pilots about half a year to train for combat in western fighter jets such as US F-16s, as Kyiv steps up its campaign to secure fourth-generation warplanes. Ukraine got a huge boost this week when Germany and the United States announced plans to provide heavy tanks to Kyiv, which is now hoping the west will also provide long-range missiles and fighter jets.

  • North Korea on Saturday denounced US pledges of battle tanks, claiming Washington was “further crossing the red line” to win hegemony by proxy war, Reuters quoted state media KCNA reporting. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s sister, Kim Yo-jong, made the remarks in a statement, saying that North Korea will “stand in the same trench” as Russia against the United States.

  • Russia’s deputy foreign minister, Sergei Ryabkov, will hold a meeting with Lynne Tracy, the new US ambassador to Moscow, early next week, the RIA news agency reported.

  • Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Saturday redoubled his efforts to stop Russian athletes participating the 2024 Olympics, saying they would try to justify the war against Ukraine if allowed to compete. Zelenskiy said on Friday that Ukraine would launch an international campaign to keep Russia out of the summer games, which will be held in Paris. Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said on Friday that any attempt to squeeze Moscow out of international sport because of what it calls its special military operation in Ukraine was “doomed to fail”.

Redditors go wild when man asks if it’s wrong to use treadmill in building’s gym for four hours a day

A Reddit user from New York was assured by others online that while his gym habits were unusual, he was not being rude to anyone else for using a treadmill in his apartment building’s gym for four hours a day.

More than 2,000 people responded to his query on Reddit — and he shared thoughts with Fox News Digital about the issue as well.

“AITA for using the treadmill at my building gym for 4 hours?” asked Reddit user “Pr1mrose” in a Jan. 27 post on the subreddit known as “Am I the A*****e” (AITA).

“I use the treadmill for 4 hours a day (light jog, it’s not like I’m Usain Bolting for that long) from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m.,” the man explained.

ADDITIONAL EXERCISE POTENTIALLY LINKED TO LONGER LIFESPANS AND LOWER DEATH RATES: STUDY

“During this time, the gym is almost empty from 6-7:45 a.m. and again from 8:30-10 a.m.,” he wrote.

The user explained that his building has a small gym for residents — with four treadmills, three bikes and three stair/elliptical machines, plus an area for weight training. The gym is open daily until 10 p.m., he said.

A Reddit user asked others to weigh in on a question: Was he wrong to spend four hours a day on a treadmill in the gym in his apartment building?
    (iStock)

All four treadmills are rarely occupied at once, said Pr1mrose — adding that it was “perhaps 15 minutes every other day.”

He also wrote, “I did a test today and for the entire four hours there was at least one treadmill free, and I was alone for over three hours of the run. There are plenty of days [when] capacity isn’t hit at all, and the days on which it is, it’s a very limited time slot.”

The man was told that the new rule “comes from management.”

The building’s management, however, has decided that there should be a 45-minute maximum use period for the cardio machines — and sent out an email to all residents of the building.

NEW YORK POLAR PLUNGE GROUP DIVES INTO ‘LIFE-CHANGING’ COLD WATER THERAPY: ‘NEVER FELT BETTER’

“I am 99% sure it’s aimed at me, as this morning about three hours in, a lady (I believe the building manager’s assistant) informed” him of the rule, he wrote — “tapping me on the shoulder.”

At the time, the other three treadmills were empty — and Pr1mrose was told that the rule “comes from management.”

A Reddit user noted that all four treadmills in his building’s gym are rarely occupied during his workouts — and that most of the time, he’s alone.

A doorman later came and told him that there was a 45-minute limit on the cardio machines.

Pr1mrose wrote that this rule was not printed anywhere in the gym and that it had not been the previous policy.

“I really don’t understand, but, Reddit, am I missing something and am I in fact the a*****e?” the user asked others.

MORE THAN 75 PERCENT OF AMERICANS AREN’T GETTING ENOUGH EXERCISE, ACCORDING TO CDC STANDARDS

On the AITA subreddit, Redditors can reply to posts saying that the poster is “NTA” (“Not the A*****e), “YTA” (“You’re the A*****e”), “NAH” (“No A*****e Here”) or “ESH” (“Everyone Sucks Here”).

“I can’t get past the jogging 4 hours a day. Are you OK?”

Users can “upvote” responses they think are helpful and “downvote” ones that are not.

Most of the Reddit users who replied to the post said they believed Pr1mrose was “NTA.”

There is now a 45-minute limit on cardio machine use in the gym of one apartment building — a hot topic of discussion on Reddit.
    (iStock)

“NTA,” wrote Reddit user “Thediciplematt” in the highest upvoted comment.

“If it was the only one? Sure, but there are four and I doubt anybody else is running for hours,” the person wrote.

“Thediciplematt” also suggested that Pr1mrose switch treadmills every 45 minutes — and “tell them you’re maliciously compliant.”

RUNNING 1 MILE A DAY IS GAINING POPULARITY ONLINE: HOW IT CAN IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH

Another user suggested Pr1mrose take a break if the other three treadmills become occupied after 45 minutes of his run.

“Four hours is a long time for a workout … not sure that’s healthy behavior …”

“NTA but if the other three are taken and you’ve been on for more than 45 minutes, you should free yours up,” wrote Reddit user “Pepper-90210.”

Others expressed concern for Pr1mrose’s health.

“I’m sorry, I can’t get past the jogging 4 hours a day. Are you OK?” wrote Reddit user “itsamezario.”

The Reddit user said that his exercise habit is “not a compulsion — it’s a hobby I very much enjoy.”
    (iStock)

“Why are you using [the treadmill] for such a long time? Four hours is a long time for a workout and I’m not sure that’s quite healthy behavior,” said Reddit user “Financial-Bottle-872.”

10-MINUTE RUN BENEFITS MOOD, BRAIN FUNCTION: STUDY

In follow-up posts, Pr1mrose explained that he is a former heavy drinker and that he uses the time on the treadmill to listen to podcasts and music — and to “have some time to myself and reflect on my life.”

He added that his exercise habit is “not a compulsion — it’s a hobby I very much enjoy.”

The Reddit user defended his exercise routine, saying he uses his four hours a day on the treadmill for self-reflection and listening to podcasts.
    (Getty)

He also noted that he normally runs outside — but as he lives in New York City, he does not want to run in the cold or risk slipping on ice.

“I fully agree and accept that in the very rare occasions all four treadmills are taken, I will step off in case people are coming by, seeing them all in use, and leaving,” he wrote.

“I have no issue with that — my issue is more I am being told to stop even when I am the only person there.”

“For now I intend to do my normal routine tomorrow morning and will see if I am confronted again.”

Pr1mrose said he would write an email to his apartment management to ask why this policy was put in place.

“I am not trying to be confrontational, I just literally do not understand the rule,” he said.

“I am not claiming to be above it, but I don’t think it’s asking a lot to be told ‘why’ when I have lived here [for] over a year and used the gym in this way all that time — and am not preventing anyone else from using it.”

Pr1mrose told Fox News Digital in an online response to a question that he was surprised by how many responses his post received — and that he has not yet heard directly from management.

Russia-Ukraine war at a glance: what we know on day 339 of the invasion | Ukraine

  • A new barrage of Russian shelling has killed at least 10 Ukrainian civilians and wounded 20 others in a day, the office of Ukraine’s president has said. Regional officials said towns and villages in the east and in the south that are within reach of the Russian artillery suffered most. Six people died in the Donetsk region, two in Kherson and two in the Kharkiv region, the officials said.

  • A day earlier, Russian-fired missiles and self-propelled drones were reported to have hit deeper into Ukrainian territory, killing at least 11 people.

  • Ukrainian troops were locked in “fierce” fighting with Russian forces on Friday for control of the town of Vugledar, south-west of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine. Both sides claimed success in the small administrative centre, a short distance from the strategic prize of the village of Pavlivka, Agence France-Presse reported. “Soon, Vugledar may become a new, very important success for us,” Denis Pushilin, the Moscow-appointed leader of the Donetsk region, was quoted as saying by Russian news agencies. But Kyiv said the town remained contested.

  • Volodymyr Zelenskiy has described the situation on the frontline as “extremely acute”, particularly in the eastern Donetsk region, where Russia is stepping up its offensive. The Ukrainian president reported major battles for Vuhledar and Bakhmut, to the north-east. Local Ukrainian officials reported heavy shelling in the north, north-east and east.

  • Ukraine’s army claims to have killed 109 Russian soldiers and wounded another 188 in one day during fighting around Vuhledar. Serhii Cherevatyi, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian armed forces’ eastern operational command, said the death toll was recorded on Thursday, adding: “Fierce fighting is ongoing. The enemy is indeed trying to achieve an intermediate success there, but thanks to the efforts of our defenders, they are unsuccessful.”

  • Poland will send an additional 60 tanks to Ukraine on top of the 14 German-made Leopard 2 tanks it has already pledged, the Polish prime minister, Mateusz Morawiecki, has told CTV News.

  • A total of 321 heavy tanks have been promised to Ukraine by several countries, Ukraine’s ambassador to France said on Friday. Vadym Omelchenko told French TV station BFM that “delivery terms vary for each case and we need this help as soon as possible”, while not specifying the number of tanks per country.

  • Belgium announced an additional €93.6m ($104.7m/£84.5m) package in military aid for Ukraine in what the Belgian prime minister, Alexander De Croo, said was – including previous spending – the largest of its kind Belgium had ever given another country.

  • Ukraine says it is setting up drone assault companies within its armed forces that will be equipped with Starlink satellite communications, as it presses ahead with an idea to build up an “army of drones”, Reuters reported. Commander-in-chief Valeriy Zaluzhnyi signed off on the creation of the units in a project that would involve several ministries and agencies, the general staff said.

  • Ten regions of Ukraine are instituting emergency power outages due to a power shortage in the network after Thursday’s Russian attacks, Ukraine’s state broadcaster has reported. Repairs to damaged facilities are continuing.

  • The Kremlin claims Joe Biden has the key to end the conflict in Ukraine by directing Kyiv to settle but has not been willing to use it. “The key to the Kyiv regime is largely in the hands of Washington,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Friday. “Now we see that the current White House leader … does not want to use this key. On the contrary, he chooses the path of further pumping weapons into Ukraine.” Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova accused Washington of engaging in a “hybrid war” against Moscow.

  • The European Union wants swift accountability for “horrific” crimes in Ukraine, EU justice ministers have said while meeting in Stockholm. But the member states differ over how to bring prosecutions, seek evidence or fund war damage repairs. .

  • Hungary will veto any European Union sanctions against Russia affecting nuclear energy, the prime minister, Viktor Orbán, told state radio on Friday.

  • Russia is violating the “fundamental principles of child protection” in wartime by giving Ukrainian children Russian passports and putting them up for adoption, the head of the UN’s refugee agency, Filippo Grandi, has said.

The film has added Rs 70 crore nett to its total on second day, in the Hindi language. The grown of ‘Pathaan’ has been historic and the craze for the film is resulting in huge footfalls in theatres. Two day total business of ‘Pathaan’ now stands at Rs 125 crore nett, reports boxofficeindia. The film has matched up to the score of the dubbed versions of ‘KGF 2’ and ‘Bahubali – The Conclusion’ in two days. In South, ‘Pathaan’ earned Rs 1.22 crore nett from the Kerala circuit while Nizam / Andhra and Mysore markets have also contributed positively to the total.
Ahead of its release, ‘Pathaan’ had landed in massive controversy over its song ‘Besharam Rang’, with several protesting against Deepika’s saffron bikini. Praising the actress for her swift dance moves in the song, SRK had said, “You need someone of the stature of Deepika to be able to pull off a song sequence like Besharam Rang and then you know, to be able to do action, where she takes a guy and pulls him right over herself and beats him, she’s tough enough to do that too. That kind of a combination could have only been achieved with someone like Deepika. It’s quite a layered character for an action film heroine so to say.”

Directed by Siddharth Anand, ‘Pathaan’ features John Abraham as the antagonist, with Deepika and SRK teaming up as spy agents. Salman Khan’s cameo in the film as Tiger is also being lauded massively by fans.

Thousands rally for ‘Invasion Day’ protests on Australia Day holiday

SYDNEY, Jan 26 (Reuters) – Thousands of Australians marked the country’s national day celebrations on Thursday with rallies in support of Indigenous people, many of whom describe the anniversary of the day a British fleet sailed into Sydney Harbour as “Invasion Day”.

In Sydney, the capital of New South Wales – Australia’s most populous state – social media showed a large crowd gathered at an “Invasion Day” rally in the central business district, where some people carried Aboriginal flags and an Indigenous smoking ceremony took place.

Similar protests took place in other Australian state capitals, including in South Australia’s Adelaide where around 2,000 people attended, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

Speaking at a flag-raising and citizenship ceremony in Australia’s capital, Canberra, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese honoured the nation’s Indigenous people, who have occupied the land for at least 65,000 years.

“Let us all recognise the unique privilege that we have to share this continent with the world’s oldest continuous culture,” Albanese said.

While it was a “difficult day” for Indigenous Australians, there were no plans to change the holiday’s date, he said.

An annual poll by market research company Roy Morgan released this week showed nearly two-thirds of Australians say Jan. 26 should be considered “Australia Day”, largely unchanged from a year ago. The rest believe it should be “Invasion Day”.

Amid the debate, some companies have adopted flexibility around observance of the holiday. Australia’s largest telecoms company, Telstra Corp Ltd (TLS.AX), this year gave its staff the option to work on Jan. 26 and take another day off instead.

“For many First Nations peoples, Australia Day … marks a turning point that saw lives lost, culture devalued, and connections between people and places destroyed,” Telstra chief executive officer Vicki Brady wrote on LinkedIn.

Many of Australia’s 880,000 or so Indigenous people out of a population of 25 million lag behind others on economic and social indicators in what the government calls “entrenched inequality”.

This year’s holiday comes as Albanese’s centre-left Labor Party government plans a referendum on recognising Indigenous people in the constitution, and requiring consultation with them on decisions that affect their lives.

The government plans to introduce legislation in March to set up the referendum that will take place later this year, as the Indigenous voice shapes as a key federal political issue.

The constitution, which came into effect in January 1901 and can’t be amended without a referendum, does not refer to the country’s Indigenous people.

One of the people at Sydney’s protest, Abi George, said it was not a happy day for all Australians, especially Indigenous people.

“Nobody’s got the right to celebrate genocide,” she said.

Another protester, Vivian Macjohn, said the rally against the national day was a show of support for Indigenous people.

“I think it’s important that we show up and we mourn with them and stand in solidarity,” she said.

“Right before the release, Steam blocked our game page at the request of a private individual, because of the name ‘The Day Before,’” the companies said in a join statement. “As you know, our game was announced in January 2021. According to the companies, while a lengthy gameplay video was planned for release later this month, they will first have to sort out this trademark issue. In a separate tweet, Fntastic said, “For the gameplay video, we will consult with lawyers first, and then we can publish it.”

The Day Before is also planned for release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series at a later date.

    Dear fans!

Right before the release, Steam blocked our game page at the request of a private individual, because of the name “The Day Before.”

As you know, our game was announced in January 2021. At the time of the announcement, “The Day Before” game trademark was available.

After the announcement of the game, the above mentioned individual filled out an application before us to register the game trademark “The Day Before” in the United States: https://uspto.report/TM/79314174

    What’s next?

Previously, we were not aware of the existence of claims. We found out about this only on January 19, 2023, when we received a complaint from him and a request to contact him.

Now we find out all the circumstances of the incident and we will definitely solve everything.

We previously planned to post a lengthy gameplay video later this month, but we’ll have to sort this issue out first. We will post a video as soon as possible.

As a result, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the launch to November 10, 2023. We understand this may disappoint many of our fans, however we want to ensure we release the best possible game.

Our 100 percent focus remains on the game itself and how to deliver you the best game possible.

Thank you and we hope for your support.

    Sincerely,
    MyTona and Fntastic
