Dave Chappelle ‘felt good’ his friends broke attacker’s arm

Dave Chappelle said he “felt good” that his friends beat up a deranged fan with a replica gun-knife who allegedly tackled him during his Hollywood Bowl show, according to leaked audio from the event’s afterparty.

“I felt good my friends broke his arm. I felt good. How bad does a n— have to be that Jon Stewart would stomp him!” Chappelle, 48, said Tuesday night in the audio obtained by TMZ from the event at the Pendry Hotel in West Hollywood.

During the frightening incident a few hours earlier, “The Closer” star yelled, “I am going to kill that mother——!” But he later told folks at the hotel that “killing that n—- would have been stupid,” according to the clip posted by TMZ.

Chapelle, who was not hurt in the incident, thanked his pals for leaving the alleged attacker, Isaiah Lee, 23, with a badly disfigured arm.

“Those are very powerful friends and I’m sharing [this night] with people I love very much,” he is heard saying.

Stewart, 59, attended Chappelle’s show at the “Netflix Is a Joke” comedy festival, but the former host of “The Daily Show” didn’t appear to actually be involved in the fracas, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Lee, an aspiring rapper who had named a song after the comedian and alluded to the attack in his lyrics, dodged felony charges in the case and was facing four misdemeanor counts, prosecutors said.

The suspect was filmed allegedly knocking the famous comedian to the floor before security was able to pounce on him.

Lee was hospitalized briefly for injuries he sustained during the incident and was later booked into jail on $30,000 bail.

Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón’s decision not to file a felony case against Lee has already triggered some criticism, including from those inside his office who are supporting a recall movement against the top prosecutor.

Dave Chappelle attacked: LA County DA won’t charge suspect with felony, refers misdemeanor case to city attorney

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — The armed man who is accused of attacking Dave Chappelle on stage at the Hollywood Bowl will not face felony charges, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office said Thursday.

Isaiah Lee, 23, was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon after tackling the comedian Tuesday night. Lee is being held on $30,000 bail. It’s unclear what motivated Lee to run onto the stage.

The county D.A.’s office referred the case to the L.A. City Attorney for possible misdemeanor charges instead. County prosecutors determined that while criminal conduct occurred “the evidence as presented did not constitute felony conduct.”

Police said Lee was armed with a replica handgun-knife when he ran onto the stage and tackled Chappelle. Witness video shows Chappelle falling back but he managed to quickly free himself as security rushed out to grab the attacker.

Exclusive footage from AIR7 HD captured the attacker on a gurney as he was being loaded into an ambulance to be taken to a hospital for unspecified injuries.

“The replica handgun, which contained a knife blade, was recovered and booked as evidence,” police said in a statement.

A spokesperson for Chappelle issued a statement Wednesday, calling the incident “unfortunate and unsettling” but saying he refuses to let it overshadow the record-breaking performance at the Hollywood Bowl.

She noted that the comedian continued with his show and worked with Jamie Foxx and Chris Rock to help calm the crowd with humor. He is cooperating with the police investigation into the incident.

Spokesperson Carla Sims’ statement reads:

“Dave Chappelle celebrated four nights of comedy and music, setting record-breaking sales for a comedian at the Hollywood Bowl. This run ties Chappelle with Monty Python for the most headlined shows by any comedian at the Hollywood Bowl, reaching 70k fans of diverse backgrounds during the first Netflix Is A Joke: The Festival, and he refuses to allow last night’s incident to overshadow the magic of this historic moment.”

“As unfortunate and unsettling as the incident was, Chappelle went on with the show. Jamie Foxx and Chris Rock helped calm the crowd with humor before Chappelle introduced the last and featured musical guests for the evening, hip-hop artists yasiin bey and Talib Kweli, a.k.a. Black Star, who performed music from their new album – the first in nearly 24 years – which was released on Luminary. Other special comedic guests last night included Earthquake, Leslie Jones, Jeff Ross, Sebastian, Jon Stewart and Michelle Wolf.”

A spokesperson for Netflix also issued a brief statement: “We care deeply about the safety of creators and we strongly defend the right of stand-up comedians to perform on stage without fear of violence.”

The comedian was not injured in the attack and later joked with the audience about it.

Comedian Chris Rock, who performed earlier in the night, came on stage with Chappelle moments after the attack and joked: “Was that Will Smith?”

Dave Chappelle attacked: LAPD releases photos of replica handgun-knife allegedly seized from suspect at Hollywood Bowl

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Video shows the exact moment a man ran on stage and attacked comedian Dave Chappelle at the Hollywood Bowl.

The footage obtained by TMZ shows the suspect – who has since been identified as 23-year-old Isaiah Lee – running onto the stage and tackling the comedian.

According to an update issued by the Los Angeles Police Department on Wednesday, Lee was armed with a replica handgun-knife.

Police released photos of the replica, whose knife blade extends outward from underneath the gun’s barrel.

Lee was taken into custody Tuesday night.

The video shows Chappelle falling back but managed to quickly free himself as security rushed out to grab the attacker.

According to ABC News, Chappelle and the man tussled on the stage floor. Security staff surrounded and tackled the man in the rear corner of the stage.

Chappelle appeared to run toward the altercation, saying the man was being “stomped” and asked repeatedly for security to remove the man from stage.

Exclusive footage from AIR7 HD captured the attacker on a gurney as he was being loaded into an ambulance to be taken to a hospital for unspecified injuries.

Lee was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and is being held on $30,000 bail, according to LAPD booking records. It’s unclear what motivated Lee to run onto the stage.

Comedian Dave Chappelle Tackled Onstage During LA Festival Show – NBC Los Angeles

A man who police said was armed with a replica gun rushed a stage and tackled comedian Dave Chappelle as he was performing at a Los Angeles comedy festival late Tuesday.

The Los Angeles Police Department early Wednesday confirmed the attack, saying the weapon the man was carrying can eject a knife blade “when you discharge it correctly.” It is unclear if the fan made an attempt to use the weapon.

Several videos and accounts posted online showed the man climbing onto the front of the Hollywood Bowl stage and rushing toward Chappelle. At least one video showed the comedian falling to the floor, with several other people rushing to apprehend the person.

The attacker, a member of the audience at the show, was detained by the venue’s security team and later taken to the hospital with “superficial injuries,” the LAPD said. A video posted online of the alleged attacker appeared to the unidentified man on a stretcher with his elbow bent at an odd angle.

Neither Chappelle nor any officer was injured, police said.

Buzzfeed reporter Brianna Sacks also shared a video showing the man being loaded onto an ambulance. Sacks said that, before the attack, the comedian spoke about increased security around him in the wake of widespread backlash for jokes he has made about the transgender community. Some Netflix employees in the fall staged a walkout in Hollywood to protest the company’s decision to carry one of Chappelle’s comedy specials, “The Closer,” which they said included trans-phobic remarks.

A motive for the Tuesday night attack is not clear.

Chappelle on Tuesday evening was performing his act at the Hollywood Bowl amphitheater as part of the Netflix Is a Joke: The Festival, taking place from April 28 to May 8. Other acts listed in the lineup alongside Chappelle included Leslie Jones, Jon Stewart and Chris Rock — a comedian who also recently faced violence onstage when he was slapped by Will Smith at the Academy Awards in March.

Representatives for Dave Chappelle and the Hollywood Bowl could not immediately be reached for comment.

The venue said on its website that the show would be a “phone-free experience” and that attendees would be required to secure their phones inside specially designed pouches. At least one person sharing a video of the incident said they had “forgotten” a second phone in their bag.

Bob Saget’s celebrity friends and comedians arrive at his funeral in LA

A host of celebrity comedians and actors attended Bob Saget’s LA funeral on Friday including Dave Chappelle, Jimmy Kimmel, Chris Rock, Jeff Ross and John Stamos.

The service was held around 2pm at Mount Sinai memorial park in Forest Lawn Cemetery, the final resting place of many Hollywood greats.

The Jewish service was packed out with well over 100 guests of friends, family, fellow stand-up comics and co-stars of Saget’s best-known show, Full House, spilling out onto the steps of the memorial hall overlooking the Warner Brothers studios in Los Angeles.

Saget, 65, who died in his sleep of a suspected heart attack on Sunday, was transported to the cemetery in a blue Chevrolet hearse.

Kelly Rizzo, his widow, said: ‘My whole heart. Bob was my absolute everything.’

She told Page Six on Monday: ‘I am so completely shattered and in disbelief. I am so deeply touched by the outpouring of love and tribute from our friends, family, his fans and his peers.’

After gathering at his home in Brentwood, his family travelled to Mount Sinai in a fleet of three black cars driven by the Kardashian’s favored limo service, Ascot.

Following the funeral, guests drove to Jeff Franklin’s home for an evening reception.

Franklin, the creator of Full House, lives in a mansion off Benedict Canyon overlooking Beverly Hills which is currently listed for rent at $250,000 per month.

Striking photos of the 9-bath, 18-bath, 21,000 sq ft house show a stone motor court, waterfall infinity pool, blue domed turret, games room and second outdoor pool.

The property listing describes a ‘private palatial masterpiece’ with a a ’75-yard pool with 3 waterfalls, 2 jacuzzis, a 35-foot water slide, swim-up bar, and private grotto.’

Chappelle, among dozens of other celebrities, was pictured heading into the mansion to mingle with Saget’s nearest and dearest.

Valets were on hand to shuttle guests up the home’s private drive – as its underground garage accommodating 16 cars was quickly overwhelmed by the huge turnout to Saget’s funeral.

Jaguars, Range Rovers, Audis and Teslas filled the parking lot at the hilltop memorial hall, that was fit to bust with well-wishers – despite Saget’s family saying the ceremony would be small.

Saget’s Full House co-star John Stamos tweeted Friday morning: ‘Today will be the hardest day of my life.

‘God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.’

Dave Chappelle, among the guests at the funeral, lamented that he did not reply to Saget’s last text.

Videoed while performing Thursday night at the Peppermint Club in West Hollywood, he joked comedians were ‘dying like hot cakes.’

‘I didn’t see [the death of] Bob coming,’ he said.

‘Man, he just texted me and I saw the text yesterday and I never texted him back because I was just busy. It happens.

‘I’m just saying this to remind you that these moments are precious,’ he added. ‘When I come out at night, I’m not just hanging out. I’m making memories.’

After the service a convoy of scores of guests in dozens of cars followed Saget’s hearse up to the highest point in the cemetery with views down to the Warner Bros studios to the north and Hollywood to the south, where his coffin was lowered into the ground.

Saget, 65, who died in his sleep of a suspected heart attack on Sunday, was transported to the cemetery in a blue Chevrolet hearse

Saget’s cause of death will not be officially determined for at least ten weeks.

He was found on Sunday lying in his hotel room bed at the Ritz-Carlton Orlando, with one hand over his chest.

The night before he had performed a two-hour energetic stand-up set and posted a joyful message on social media.

Stand-up comic Jeff Ross attended the funeral dressed in a metallic blue suit, and accompanied by Jodie Sweetin who played Stephanie Tanner in the ABC comedy series.

Ross, who was close with Saget for over 15 years, said his death fitting albeit too soon.

‘You know he was this global superstar, TV star, but he passed away, alone in a hotel room, on the road, like a true comic,’ Ross told CNN.

‘I think that in an odd way that is sort of poetic and perfect. Even though way too soon, it’s kind of how I would want to go.’

He added that Saget’s daughters Aubrey, 34, Lara, 32, and Jennifer, 29, and his widow, Kelly Rizzo, were ‘hurting’, and described Saget’s marriage as ‘perfect’.

‘She was very well suited for him and him for her. She was a real partner to him and it’s exactly what Bob needed was somebody who could challenge him and love him at the same time. And it’s a real, beautiful love affair, you know, and it was just perfect in every way.’

Near to the Mt. Sinai hall are the crypts and graves for Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher, Hollywood golden age actress Bette Davis, singer Liberace, Stan Laurel, Nipsey Hussle, and Buster Keaton.

Saget’s widow Kelly Rizzo, 42, was spotted outside the couple’s home Thursday ahead of the funeral. She looked somber as she stepped out to pick up her mail in a hoodie, baseball cap and sunglasses.

Numerous friends and loved ones had been seen visiting the couple’s Brentwood home throughout the week in the wake of his unexpected passing to offer their support and condolences.

On Thursday Full House co-stars Candace Cameron Bure, Dave Coulier, Andrea Barber and Jodie Sweetin reunited as they stopped by to pay their respects.

Bure, 45, who played Saget’s on-screen daughter DJ Tanner, was seen embracing her TV bestfriend Barber, 45, also known as Kimmy Gibbler, as the two gathered outside with Coulier, 62, who played Joey Gladstone.

Sweetin, 39, who played DJ’s younger sister Stephanie Tanner, was seen arriving separately with a friend.

Fellow comedian Jeffrey Ross was also seen visiting the home Thursday. Ross has spent the last couple days at the couple’s house and earlier this week revealed he had picked up Saget’s car at the LAX airport where the actor had left it before traveling to Florida.

Days earlier, the cast of the hit ABC sitcom released a collective statement paying tribute to their TV dad and longtime friend.

‘Thirty-five years ago, we came together as a TV family, but we became a real family. And now we grieve as a family,’ the statement said. ‘Bob made us laugh until we cried. Now our tears flow in sadness, but also with gratitude for all the beautiful memories of our sweet, kind, hilarious, cherished Bob.

‘He was a brother to us guys, a father to us girls and a friend to all of us. Bob, we love you dearly. We ask in Bob’s honor, hug the people you love. No one gave better hugs than Bob.’

It was signed off from, ‘John, Dave, Candace, Jodie, Lori, Andrea, Scott, Jeff, Ashley and Mary-Kate.’

Many of his fellow Full House stars also shared their own heart-wrenching tributes on social media after learning the shocking news of his death.

‘I don’t know what to say [broken-hearted emoji]. I have no words. Bob was one of the best human beings I’ve ever known in my life. I loved him so much,’ Candace Cameron Bure tweeted.

‘My heart is broken,’ said Dave Coulier. ‘I love you, Bob. Your forever brother, Dave.’

Lori Loughlin, also known as Aunt Becky, released an additional statement saying: ‘Words cannot begin to express how devastated I am. Bob was more than my friend, he was my family.’

She added: ‘I will miss his kind heart and quick wit. Thank you for a lifetime of wonderful memories and laughter. I love you Bobby.’

Saget’s unexpected death comes amid his cross-country stand-up tour, which kicked off back in September 2021. He had recently played a string of shows in Florida, including one in Orlando.

On Saturday, the night before his body was discovered, Saget sent his final tweet following a show at Jacksonville, Florida’s Ponte Vedra Concert Hall.

‘Loved tonight’s show @PV_ConcertHall in Jacksonville. Appreciative audience,’ he wrote. ‘Thanks again to @RealTimWilkins for opening. I had no idea I did a 2 hr set tonight. I’m happily addicted again to this s**t. Check BobSaget.com for my dates in 2022.’

On Monday Rizzo broke her silence in a statement shared with People saying: ‘My whole heart. Bob was my absolute everything. I am so completely shattered and in disbelief.

‘I am so deeply touched by the outpouring of love and tribute from our friends, family, his fans and his peers.’

She continued: ‘When the time is right and when this news is not as raw, I look forward to sharing more of Bob with the world.

‘Sharing how much he meant to me, all of those around him, and how much all of his fans and friends meant to him as well. Thank you for respecting my privacy at this time.’

A source previously told the outlet Monday that Rizzo was ‘in shock and processing everything’ in the wake of her spouse’s sudden passing.

An insider told People that Saget had chatted with Rizzo ‘in the early morning hours on Sunday’ and that the comic ‘was so excited coming off of a great show and he sounded really happy.’

The source noted that Saget had been ‘scheduled to fly home the next day’ and when Rizzo hadn’t heard from him, she phoned the hotel, who sent security to the room he was staying in at the Ritz-Carlton in Orlando, Florida.

Earlier this week DailyMail.com revealed that Saget was found lying face-up on his bed ‘cold to the touch… His left arm was across his chest while his right arm was resting on the bed’ – a position which officers said could point to a possible heart attack.

Authorities believe Saget may have ‘suffered a heart attack or stroke’ because they found no evidence of foul play or drug use.

Cops are also investigating Saget’s revelation during a podcast recording last week that he had recently battled Covid-19 and whether the virus may have caused blood clots or another side effect that played a part in his death on Sunday.

In an appearance on ‘A Corporate Time with Tom & Dan’, Saget revealed he had recently battled Covid-19, without saying when, described it as ‘not good’ and joked about dying from the virus in an apparent bid to drum up interest in his 2022 stand-up tour.

There is not expected to be a definitive cause of death for another ten to 12 weeks, according to Orange County’s Medical Examiner’s officer.

Security officer Jody Lee Harrison entered Saget’s room, 962, on Sunday afternoon after the hotel was contacted by concerned family. He found Saget ‘unresponsive and not breathing,’ according to the police report seen by DailyMail.com.

In the 911 call audio obtained by DailyMail.com, an officer can be heard telling dispatch, ‘We have an unresponsive guest in a room. My officer is telling me there’s no pulse. Not responsive, not breathing, and no pulse.’

The report states Saget was declared deceased at 4.18pm, 11 minutes after the 911 call. The officer says he saw nothing untoward.

Saget and Rizzo, who is a food blogger and TV host, initially met through friends Katie Killean and George Shapiro in 2015.

They married in October of 2018 in Santa Monica, California at the luxury hotel Shutters on the Beach with Saget’s friend, actor Jonathan Silverman, presiding over the ceremony.

Saget’s Full House costars Stamos, Bure, Dave Coulier, Lori Loughlin, Jodie Sweetin and Andrea Barber were among those in attendance. The wedding also included a performance by Mayer of the song A Face to Call Home.

The nuptials came less than a year after they revealed they were engaged in November of 2017.

Patton Oswalt defends performing with Dave Chappelle after backlash

Patton Oswalt defended his decision to perform with embattled comedian Dave Chappelle on New Year’s Eve.

The comedian shared in a post on Instagram that he was conducting his last show of 2021 at a venue in Seattle when he got a text from fellow stand-up and friend, Chappelle. Apparently, they were performing next door to each other so Chappelle invited him to come do a drop-in set.

“Why not? I waved good-bye to this hell-year with a genius I started comedy with 34 years ago,” Oswalt wrote. “He works an arena like he’s talking to one person and charming their skin off. Anyway, I ended the year with a real friend and a deep laugh. Can’t ask for much more.”

Oswalt’s fans were conflicted over his kind words toward Chappelle given that he faces backlash over comments he made in his recent comedy special “The Closer.”

The comedian caught the ire of the LGBTQ+ community after the comedy special was released on Netflix in September. In it, Chappelle dedicates about a third of his time to discussing his past dealings with people in the transgender community getting offended by his jokes. He makes remarks such as “gender is a fact” and declares himself “team TERF,” a term standing for trans-exclusionary radical feminist, in a lengthy defense of “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling.

His comments sparked a lot of backlash, including a walkout among Netflix employees and calls for his content to be pulled from the platform.

After the attention that his New Year’s Eve post received, Oswalt shared another post on New Year’s Day addressing the situation. In his new post, he noted that he and Chappelle “100% disagree about transgender rights & representation.” However, he noted that he does not believe his friend’s views on the matter are permanent.

“I saw a friend I hadn’t seen in a long time this New Year’s Eve. We’ve known each other since we’re teens. He’s a fellow comedian, the funniest I’ve ever met,” Oswalt began his latest post. “I wanted to post a pic & an IG story about it — so I did. The friend is Dave Chappelle. Thirty four YEARS we’ve been friends.”

He added: “He’s refocused and refined ideas a lot of us took as settled about race & history & Life On Planet Earth and spun them around with a phrase or punchline. We’ve done bad & good gigs, open mikes & TV tapings.”

After defending his longtime friendship with Chappelle, Oswalt tried to put the controversy he is facing in context and explained why he won’t cancel him from his life.

“We also 100% disagree about transgender rights & representation. I support trans peoples’ rights — ANYONE’S rights — to live safely in the world as their fullest selves. For all the things he’s helped ME evolve on, I’ll always disagree with where he stands NOW on transgender issues,” he wrote. “But I also don’t believe a seeker like him is done evolving, learning. You know someone that long, see the struggles and changes, it’s impossible to cut them off.”

The 52-year-old stand-up performer went on to discuss cancel culture in general, revealing that he’s cut friends out of his life with whom he couldn’t agree. Now, he wonders if that negative reception only made them dig their heels in more and double down on bad decisions.

“I’m an LGBTQ ally. I’m a loyal friend. There’s friction in those traits that I need to reconcile myself, and not let cause feels of betrayal in ANYONE else. And I’m sorry, truly sorry, that I didn’t consider the hurt this would cause,” he concluded. “Or the DEPTH of that hurt. I’ve been messaging a lot on IG today, and the back and forth has really helped guide me in the writing of this.”

Despite the backlash that Chappelle received, particularly from Netflix employees, the streaming platform announced in December that he will take part in a new 11-day stand-up comedy festival titled “Netflix Is A Joke: The Festival,” in Los Angeles featuring over 130 artists.

Patton Oswalt reacts to backlash over meet-up with ‘canceled’ Dave Chappelle

Patton Oswalt addressed backlash he received after meeting up with controversial comic Dave Chappelle on New Year’s Eve.

The 52-year-old stand-up comedian had shared several snaps with Chappelle, 48, in Seattle, Washington and called him a ‘genius’ and ‘real friend’ which ruffled some feathers.

Responding to the criticism over both the post and the friendship, Oswalt explained that though they ‘100% disagree on transgender rights’ it was ‘impossible’ to cut off a friend of 34-years despite their differing beliefs.

Ruffling feathers: Patton Oswalt, 52, addressed backlash he received after meeting up with controversial comic Dave Chappelle, 48, on New Year’s Eve where he called him a ‘genius’ and ‘real friend’

Patton’s initial post showed several photos of he and Dave. He explained that as both were in town to cap off 2021 with stand-up sets — which happened to be next door to each other — he received a text from Chappelle to come by and do a guest set to which he thought ‘Why not?’

‘I waved good-bye to this hell-year with a genius I started comedy with 34 years ago,’ he continued to say. ‘He works an arena like he’s talking to one person and charming their skin off. Anyway, I ended the year with a real friend and a deep laugh. Can’t ask for much more.’

Many were outraged on account of Chappelle’s transphobic statements in his Netflix special, The Closer, which caused Oswalt to share a self-reflection style follow-up while explaining himself on January 1.

In a lengthy caption he apologized for any hurt the post may have caused and maintained that though he and Dave wholeheartedly disagree on transgender issues, he still defends the friendship as well.

‘Thirty four YEARS we’ve been friends. He’s refocused and refined ideas a lot of us took as settled about race & history & Life On Planet Earth and spun them around with a phrase or punchline. Surprise set: In his post Patton explained that as both were in town to cap off 2021 with stand-up sets — which happened to be next door to each other — he received a text from Chappelle to come by and do a guest set to which he thought ‘Why not?’

Oswalt continued to speak about the challenges of reconciling his desire to be a ‘loyal friend’ to Chappelle and retaining friendships with people who hold different beliefs while also being an ‘LGBTQ ally.’

‘Also, I’ve been carrying a LOT of guilt about friends I’ve cut off, who had views with which I couldn’t agree, or changed in ways I couldn’t live with. Sometimes I wonder — did I and others cutting them off make them dig their heels in deeper, fuel their ignorance with a nitro-boost of resentment and spite?

Patton continued to say that he had been messaging with many on Instagram after the backlash, and confessed: ‘I (naively) deleted a lot of posts in the comment thread — critical ones from LGBTQ writers AND shit-posts by TERF/anti-trans orcs looking for clicks & giggles.’

‘I wanted a “nice comment thread” about the pic with my friend. Ugh. So easy to think someone ELSE needs growth and miss the need in yourself. Gonna keep trying.’

Chappelle had famously found himself on the receiving end of cancel culture after he said in a segment of his Netflix special that a trans woman’s genitalia is ‘not quite what it is,’ and called gender ‘a fact.’

He additionally declared himself ‘team TERF’ (trans-exclusionary radical feminist)’ and defended Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling who has been accused of being transphobic.

Following outrage he had remained unapologetic about the special and declared ‘I said what I said.’

There had been calls for Netflix to remove the special but an executive from the streaming giant said that the statements didn’t cross ‘the line on hate’ and declared they were not going to pull it from the platform, which later caused a walkout at Netflix from LGBTQ+ members and allies.

Dave Chappelle Says Hannah Gadsby Is ‘Not Funny.’ The Laughter At Her Show Taping Suggests Otherwise

As Dave Chappelle moves into his third week of defending his Netflix special, The Closer, in which he rehashed the same old anti-trans bigotry he’s been peddling for years, the comedian has both earned an ally in Fox News and begun offering terms for peace accords the “transgender community” didn’t ask for.

In response to the suspensions of trans Netflix staff who daren’t chuckle at his little screed, Chappelle has, via Instagram, “jokingly” offered to meet with those who have lost their livelihoods for publicly finding him unfunny and asserted that comedian Hannah Gadsby is in fact the one who’s not funny.

Per Deadline:

“And if you want to meet with me, I am more than willing to, but I have some conditions,” the currently touring Chappelle says onstage, saying he has not actually been invited to speak with “transgender employees of Netflix.” He says over laughter: “First of all, you cannot come if you have not watched my special from beginning to end. You must come to a place of my choosing at a time of my choosing, and thirdly, you must admit that Hannah Gadsby is not funny.”

Chappelle continues to believe that he is some sort of martyr to the culture wars, complaining recently that his name is no longer enough to get his forthcoming documentary into film festivals, despite Rolling Stone’s questions about the veracity of that statement. Even his joke at the expense of those who are currently facing non-ironic unemployment attempts to position Chappelle as the aggrieved party in the conflict between his words versus many other human beings’ lived experience.

Perhaps hoping for headlines like the one I have reluctantly typed above, Chappelle has also dragged Hannah Gadsby into this, likely because she had the audacity to ask to be left out of this when a Netflix executive used her name to point out that the streaming service presents both sides of the argument. The two sides, of course, are people who think that trans people deserve respect and those who wonder if offering that respect isn’t just some ploy to silence aging Gen X comedians clinging to the heyday of their cultural relevancy by using cruelty as an impetus to feign outrage at the response to that cruelty.

In the middle of this battle of wanting attention versus requesting human decency, I must offer a bit of clarifying information that I’m sure will be of great importance to those following this situation: I was at the Netflix taping of Gadsby’s Douglas, and I not only saw people laughing, but I also laughed myself. As far as I know, no audience members paid to do so; in fact, I actually exchanged American currency for the opportunity. As for the rest of the audience, I cannot say whether they were laughing because they found Gadsby humorous, but I can say with absolutely certainty that I, many times, was compelled to mirth for no reason beyond the hilarious ways in which Gadsby framed her observations.

However, in the interest of journalistic integrity, I have contacted the gentleman I attended the show with (who wishes to be called Dimitry because that is his name) and asked him, on record, for his observational evidence of Gadsby’s funniness. A transcript of the interview, conducted via text, is included below:

Jezebel: Did you, in fact, see Hannah Gadsby perform a comedy routine called Douglas at the Theater in the ACE Hotel, Los Angeles, California? And if so, did you laugh while Gadsby spoke?

Dimitry: I absolutely did. Not only did I laugh, but I laughed so hard I might have peed a little. Like nothing gross, a respectful dribble befitting such a stellar comedic performance.

Let the record show that two witnesses have now come forward to question the validity of Chappelle’s second demand, and let the pee admission serve as proof of the sincerity of their good faith attempt to simply make sure the truth is known.
