Marvel Sequel Will Be His Last

Drax’s final ride comes in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Ten years ago, when James Gunn cast former professional wrestler Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, some were skeptical. Sure, this dude was a charismatic wrestler, but could he act? Oh, how that has changed, now that Bautista’s breakout Marvel Studios role has propelled him into a diverse, impressive acting career. Though the character is a fan favorite, the actor reveals that he never wanted Drax to be his signature role and that he’ll officially be leaving it behind this May when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 his theaters.

“I’m so grateful for Drax. I love him,” Bautista told GQ magazine. “But there’s a relief [that it’s over]. It wasn’t all pleasant. It was hard playing that role. The makeup process was beating me down. And I just don’t know if I want Drax to be my legacy—it’s a silly performance, and I want to do more dramatic stuff.”

So, there are a few things to unpack here and we’ll start with what we know. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 writer/director James Gunn confirmed on his Instagram Stories that, yes, the upcoming film will be the final time Bautista plays Drax. Does that mean Drax will be recast (which Bautista himself said he’s cool with)? Does he die? Does he just go off and leave the Guardians? Those answers will come in a few months. But, for now, we at least know where these feelings are coming from.

As for Bautista’s relief at leaving it behind, you almost understand that too. While Drax is a big, boisterous character, matching Bautista’s physical stature, those aren’t the types of characters he’s most interested in playing. For example, in the GQ profile, he talks about just wanting to work more and more with director Denis Villeneuve, who cast Bautista in small roles in both Blade Runner 2049 and Dune (though the role is significantly expanded in this year’s Dune: Part Two). “If I could be a number one [on the callsheet] with Denis, I would do it for fucking free,” the actor said. “I think that’s how I could find out how good I could be. He brings out the best in me. He sees me in a different light, sees the performer that I want to be. That might be how I solve the puzzle.”

He’s also worked with the likes of Sam Mendes, Zack Snyder, Rian Johnson, and, later this year, M. Night Shyamalan. He’s not afraid to take a smaller role, as long as it means working with someone great. And while Gunn is certainly great, after three full films, a Holiday Special, and several other Marvel cameos, you understand how a performer like that is ready to leave it behind and try something new.

What do you think happens to Drax in Guardians 3? Let us know below.

Knives Out 2 is Expected to Release in Late 2022

Image: Lionsgate

Back in 2019, Rian Johnson released Knives Out, a pretty good murder mystery starring Daniel Craig as the charmingly strange detective Benoit Blanc and a murder’s row of suspects, including Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, and the late Christopher Plummer in one of his final roles. Johnson’s film went on to become a smash critical and box office hit at $311.4 million. With his Star Wars tenure in seemingly in production purgatory for the forseeable future, Johnson had time to craft a new case for Benoit to solve. Now, the anticipated sequel—the first of two, remember— finally has a release window.

Variety broke the news on Friday, claiming that Knives Out 2 is expected to land towards the end of 2022 both on Netflix and in theaters. Before its release, release, it’s believed the film will appear during the end of year festival circuit, though which ones are currently unclear. Considering the first one was nominated for several awards, including Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars and Best Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes, it makes sense that Netflix would try to push the sequel in the hopes it’ll net some awards. (Netflix will certainly make an effort this year, hence films like Don’t Look Up and Tick, Tick…Boom!)

Details on Knives Out 2 have been extremely quiet. All that’s known is that Craig is back as Blanc (maybe not his accent, though?), and Johnson’s been assembling a pretty stacked cast for the Southern detective to investigate and form a rapport with. The cast currently includes heavy hitters such as Jessica Henwick, Kathryn Hahn, Ethan Hawke, Dave Bautista, and Janelle Monae. Production on the film began in June and wrapped back in September.

With a late 2022 window now revealed, here’s hoping that we get some more info, and a trailer, on Knives Out 2 soon.

Dave Bautista adopts abused Florida puppy, offers 5K to find culprit

Actor and former pro wrestler Dave Bautista has decided to adopt a three-month-old dog who was horribly abused after the puppy’s tragic story melted his heart.

The ex-WWE star, known for his role as Drax the Destroyer in the “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise, had heard about the neglected pup, named Sage, from the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, which shared her wrenching story online this month, in a post that quickly went viral.

Sage was spotted eating garbage by a good Samaritan who rushed her to the Florida animal organization, according to the post. The pooch underwent surgery to remove a metal chain that was embedded into her neck, along with skin issues and overgrown nails. Despite being in “immense pain” workers said she was wagging her tail while vets examined her.

Dave Bautista revealed he adopted the neglected puppy in a viral Instagram post.

Bautista — a known dog lover —  decided to get involved tough-guy-style, personally offering $5,000 in cash to anyone who could provide information that could get Sage’s “piece of sh-t” abusers arrested, he wrote in an Instagram post last week to his 3.6 million followers. The Humane Society also offered to pay $1,500.

“ATTN Tampa Bay: I will personally hand $5000 cash to the person who gives information leading to the arrest and conviction of the sick piece of sh-t responsible for this,” the 52-year-old Marvel star wrote in the post. “If you know anything please contact @humanesocietytampabay or @safek9.”

Support quickly grew, with actor Mickey Rourke pledging $1,000 for information and a Tampa Bay law firm also confirmed it would match Bautista’s $5,000, Bautista said in a video, adding he was disappointed that there were apparently no “solid leads” yet on the sicko.

Bautista said he decided to welcome the adorable pooch, re-named Penny, into his family and his two adopted pit bulls.

“The puppy you know as Sage today became Penny Bautista,” he announced in the post. “I’d like to introduce you to the newest member of my family… she is now a Bautista, and she will never be abused again in her life.”

Penny is a three-month-old puppy who Bautista vowed “will never be abused again in her life.”

The Humane Society of Tampa Bay also announced its excitement for the newest furry member of the Bautista family.

“We are so excited for Sage! She went from eating trash in a cemetery with a chain embedded around her neck to starting an AMAZING new life with Dave and 2 new Pitty siblings,” the organization posted.

Bautista, who also stars in the “Dune” film, told local reporters he believes that animal abusers are “evil.”

“To me, there’s nothing more innocent and pure than a puppy,” Bautista said at the Humane Society on Thursday, WTSP reported.

“For someone who can abuse a puppy has got to be the lowest form of human being, pure evil, for someone who can abuse an animal like that. It makes me sick to my stomach.”

Trailer FrenzyA special place to find the newest trailers for movies and TV shows you’re craving.

Yes, in recent years director Zack Snyder has become synonymous with the comic book heroes of DC. But let’s not forget where he got his start: with zombies—and with muscle-bound men brutalizing each other in slow motion. And after several years in the world of comics, Snyder is going back to those not-so-humble beginnings.

We’re talking zombies. We’re talking action. We’re talking Army of the Dead, Snyder’s latest film which will be released on Netflix May 21. The film stars Guardians of the Galaxy’s Dave Bautista, as one of a group of mercenaries who swoop into Las Vegas to rob a casino. Sounds dangerous enough, it’s but even more so since it’s happening during a zombie apocalypse where Las Vegas has already been lost. Here’s the first trailer for Army of the Dead.

We’ll have much more on the trailer later this week. For now, tell us what you think in the comments below.
