India bans wheat exports as heat wave hurts crop, domestic prices soar

MUMBAI, May 14 (Reuters) – India banned wheat exports on Saturday, just days after saying it was targeting record shipments this year, as a scorching heat wave curtailed output and domestic prices soared to an all-time high.
The government said it would still allow exports backed by already issued letters of credit and to countries that request supplies “to meet their food security needs”.
Global buyers were banking on supplies from the world’s second-biggest wheat producer after exports from the Black Sea region plunged following Russia’s Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine. Before the ban, India had aimed to ship a record 10 million tonnes this year. read more

Although it is not one of the world’s top wheat exporters, India’s ban could drive global prices to new peaks given already tight supply, hitting poor consumers in Asia and Africa particularly hard.
“The ban is shocking,” a Mumbai-based dealer with a global trading firm said. “We were expecting curbs on exports after two to three months, but it seems like the inflation numbers changed the government’s mind.”

Wheat prices in India have risen to record highs, in some spot markets hitting 25,000 rupees ($320) per tonne, well above the government’s minimum support price of 20,150 rupees.
Rising fuel, labour, transportation and packaging costs are also boosting the price of wheat flour in India.
“It was not wheat alone. The rise in overall prices raised concerns about inflation and that’s why the government had to ban wheat exports,” said a senior government official who asked not to be named as discussions about export curbs were private.
“For us, it’s abundance of caution,” he said.
SMALLER CROP
India just this week outlined its record export target for the fiscal year that started on April 1, saying it would send trade delegations to countries such as Morocco, Tunisia, Indonesia and the Philippines to explore ways to boost shipments.
In February the government forecast production of 111.32 million tonnes, the sixth straight record crop, but it cut the forecast to 105 million tonnes in May. read more
A spike in temperatures in mid-March means the crop could instead be around 100 million tonnes or even lower, said a New Delhi-based dealer with a global trading firm.
“The government’s procurement has fallen more than 50%. Spot markets are getting far lower supplies than last year. All these things are indicating lower crop,” the dealer said.
Cashing in on a rally in global wheat prices after Russia invaded Ukraine, India exported a record 7 million tonnes of wheat in the fiscal year to March, up more than 250% from the previous year.
“The rise in wheat price was rather moderate, and Indian prices are still substantially lower than global prices,” said Rajesh Paharia Jain, a New Delhi-based trader.
“In fact, wheat prices in some parts of the country had jumped to the current level even last year, so the move to ban export is nothing but a knee-jerk reaction.”
Despite a drop in production and government purchases by the state-run Food Corporation of India (FCI), India could have shipped at least 10 million tonnes of wheat this fiscal year, Jain said.
The FCI has so far bought a little over 19 million tonnes of wheat from domestic farmers, against last year’s total purchases of a record 43.34 million tonnes. The FCI buys grain from local farmers to run a food welfare programme for the poor.
Unlike previous years, farmers have preferred to sell wheat to private traders, who offered better prices than the government’s fixed rate.
In April, India exported a record 1.4 million tonnes of wheat and deals were already signed to export around 1.5 million tonnes in May. read more

Orange crop is set to be the smallest since WWII, sending OJ prices surging
That has sent orange juice prices higher during the pandemic, and they will probably continue to climb: Frozen orange juice futures have surged more than 50% during the pandemic, and they rose to a two-year high last week — soaring 5% alone Thursday.
“You have your classical supply-demand mismatch,” said Shawn Hackett, president of Hackett Financial Advisors, which specializes in agricultural commodities analysis. Because of that, consumers should expect “much higher prices at the supermarket.”
The anticipated spike in orange juice prices comes as consumers are already facing inflation across multiple sectors. The US consumer price index rose 7% over the past year before seasonal adjustments, the steepest climb in prices since June 1982, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported last week.
Over the past year, food consumed at home was 6.5% more expensive while prices at restaurants rose 6%. Fruit juice and nonalcoholic drink prices have already spiked 5.7% this year, and orange juice futures are up.
Supply shrinks
Last week, the USDA said it expects Florida to produce 44.5 million boxes of oranges this year, an unusually small harvest. That would be the smallest since the 1944-45 season when 42.23 million boxes were produced, a Florida statistician with the USDA told CNN Business.
“The Florida citrus crop is going to be one of the smallest crops since the 1940s,” said Judith Ganes, president of J Ganes Consulting, which offers commodities analysis to the food and agriculture industry. “It’s going to be even smaller than the production that occurred several years ago … when Hurricane Irma blew through Florida,” she said.
Florida’s orange crops, which are responsible for most of the country’s orange juice, have been dwindling for years, she noted. One culprit is an insidious citrus disease, referred to as citrus greening, which leads to smaller oranges and less fruit per tree.
“The disappointment of another decline in the forecast is hard to overstate,” Shelley Rossetter, assistant director of global marketing at the Florida Department of Citrus, said in a statement. She added that Florida citrus growers are focused on “seeking new solutions to citrus greening.”
Smaller oranges yield less juice, explained Ganes. That means processors, who already have to pay more because of the diminished supply of oranges, also have to buy more oranges to make the same amount of juice that comes from healthy fruit. That, in turn, means higher costs for consumers.
At the same time, international growers are dealing with their own set of shortages.
“Brazil had a historic drought last year that significantly hurt the orange crop that’s used to produce the orange juice,” said Hackett. “They’re not going to have exportable supplies at the [typical] level.”
And as supply contracts worldwide, orange juice is having a pandemic-fueled renaissance.
Demand grows
Prior to the pandemic, “US demand for orange juice had been down for 20 years straight,” said Hackett.
That’s partially because consumers’ changing ideas of health have made fruit juice, which is relatively high in sugar and calories, unfashionable. It’s also because over the years, many American stopped regularly eating breakfast at home, opting instead for an on-the-go meal.
But during the pandemic, many have once again started eating breakfast at home, and some have put orange juice back on the menu.
Because of that, US sales of 100% non-concentrated juices jumped from $5 to $5.5 billion in 2020, and remained mostly at that level in 2021, according to data from Euromonitor International.
“We’re still dealing with demand today that’s well above what it was in 2019, before the pandemic hit,” Hackett said. “So we have this renewed demand at a time that are available supplies are way, way down.”

‘Scott is going crazy,’ an insider told the publication. ‘He’s going to go off the deep end. It’s really bad. It’s about to get dark.’
A source also told Us Weekly that the model and socialite feels out of touch with the Kardashians as his ex continues to move on.
‘The Kardashians adore Scott and tell him he’s part of the family no matter what, but he feels very distant and feels like an outcast more than ever,’ the source said.
On Thursday, Scott shared a photo of his sons Reign, six, and Mason, 11, as they cuddled up with blankets on a sofa at home.
