Croatia beats Morocco in World Cup third-place playoff match

CNN
 —

Croatia beat Morocco 2-1 in the third-place playoff on Saturday as the African side’s historic 2022 World Cup ended in defeat.

It took Croatia just seven minutes to open the scoring through a header from Joško Gvardiol, before Achraf Dari equalized two minutes later.

In an open and exciting game, Croatia retook the lead through a brilliant finish from Mislav Oršić on the stroke of half-time.

Despite its best efforts, Morocco could not find another equalizer, finishing the tournament in fourth place to cap off a memorable few weeks in Qatar where Morocco became the first African nation to reach the World Cup semifinals.

Croatia’s third-placed finish is its second at a World Cup, having finished third in 1998. In Russia four years ago Croatia was runner up.

After the game, Croatia head coach Zlatko Dalić said his team’s achievement isn’t lost on him.

“I’m proud of my team and of my country. For us, bronze is a gold medal,” Dalić told BeIN Sports, per FIFA. “We played a very tough tournament.

“Also, I want to congratulate Morocco – they played well, they did a fantastic job. Really I am proud, very happy. Maybe it wasn’t expected that Croatia would do something big again but we are a small country with big dreams and congratulations to everyone. We wanted to go back home as a winner and not a loser.”

When asked about Croatia’s talismanic captain Luka Modrić – whose future with the national team remains a question mark at 37 years of age – Dalić was full of praise, hoping he would return for the team’s Euro 2024 campaign.

“Modrić is our captain, he is our big voice and he played fantastically this tournament also. He is 37 years old but he played like a 25-year-old maximum. He is our leader and everybody follows him.”

It’s the game at the World Cup most teams often don’t want to play.

Just days after losing in the semifinals, teams must play again despite hopes of a tournament victory being dashed fresh in their minds.

But for two of this tournament’s surprise stories – Croatia and Morocco – the drive to finish with a victory was evident from minute one.

Morocco wanted to cap its historic run in style, while Croatia was looking to cement its second third-place finish in six World Cup appearances.

From the outset, defending was at a premium. Having played out a goalless draw earlier in the tournament, within the first 10 minutes at the Khalifa International Stadium both sides had found the back of the net.

First, Croatia’s star young defender, Gvardiol, put his side ahead in the seventh minute after a superbly worked free kick. The clipped ball into the area was headed backwards by Ivan Perišić for the 20-year-old to power his side ahead.

However, only two minutes later, Morocco was level, the goal coming from another free kick. After the ball was looped into the area via a deflection, Dari was the lucky beneficiary as he headed home with no Croatian marker in his vicinity.

And the game continued at a furious pace, with Croatia enjoying the majority of possession and chances.

With Morocco’s fans once again providing a fantastic atmosphere, chances came and went in pulsating fashion – Morocco striker Youssef En-Nesyri’s header from a corner drifted just wide.

But with a moment of magic, Croatia once again took the lead, this time on the stroke of half-time.

After some scrappy play on the edge of the Moroccan box, a beautifully curled finish off the post from Oršić once again had the European nation ahead.

After the break, the chances continued to flow but neither side fashioned any real goal-scoring opportunities.

On the hour mark, Andrej Kramarić was forced off through injury, with the 31-year-old in tears as he was helped off the field.

With 15 minutes left, Croatia thought it had a penalty when Gvardiol was brought down in the Morocco box after a wonderful run. However, the video assistant referee (VAR) deemed it not a foul, to the amazement of the Croatian players, despite it appearing as if Sofyan Amrabat had clipped the heels of the defender.

In the final few minutes, despite Morocco needing a goal, it was actually Croatia which looked the more likely to score, with Mateo Kovačić coming closest.

But, with almost the final kick of the game, En-Nesyri’s towering header flew just over the bar as Moroccan hopes of an equalizer slipped away.

In the end, Croatia was able to hold out for the narrow victory to match the achievement by the nation’s so-called “bronze generation” in 1998.

For Morocco, its magical few weeks in Qatar comes to an end, having captured the hearts and minds of a whole continent with its trail-blazing run to the final four of the World Cup.

Croatia vs. Morocco live updates: Croatia leads in second half

The 2022 FIFA World Cup continues Saturday live on FOX with Morocco taking on Croatia at Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, Qatar in the tournament’s third-place game.

It is the penultimate match in this 2022 World Cup ahead of Sunday’s final between Argentina and France (coverage begins at 9 a.m. ET on FOX and the FOX Sports app).

Morocco had a dream run to the semifinals before falling just short of the ultimate goal, becoming the first African nation to make it that far. Croatia, meanwhile, hushed the doubters who were skeptical the team could replicate its success from 2018 and showed it can be a contender for years to come. Both teams are still approaching Saturday’s game like it is the World Cup final.

Here are the top plays!

Croatia vs. Morocco

7′: GOAL!

Croatia struck first in the opening minutes, as defender Josko Gvardiol knocked in a straight-on header to give it the early lead.

Lionel Messi’s last dance dream remains alive as Argentina overpowers Croatia to reach World Cup final

CNN
 —

Lionel Messi’s lifelong dream of guiding Argentina to World Cup glory will remain alive until the last day of Qatar 2022, as La Albiceleste outclassed a weary-looking Croatia in a 3-0 victory in Tuesday’s semifinal.

Two first-half goals, the first a Messi penalty and the second a solo effort from Julian Alvarez, put Argentina in a commanding position at the interval, a position that Croatia never looked like recovering from.

Alvarez secured the victory with Argentina’s third goal in the second half following a wonderful Messi assist, providing the South American team and its 35-year-old captain with a chance to banish the demons of the 2014 final defeat, as well as securing the country’s first World Cup title since 1986.

Messi spent parts of the game feeling his left hamstring, though you wouldn’t have guessed he was in any discomfort by the way his mazy, twisting run bamboozled Joško Gvardiol, one of this tournament’s best defenders, to create Argentina’s third goal.

Messi’s near superhuman powers are undoubtedly dwindling as he plays into the twilight of his career, but the little magician still has the ability to deliver moments of genius just when his country needs him most.

His goal against Mexico in the group stages, the assist against the Netherlands in the quarterfinals and his overall performance in Tuesday’s semfinal have provided yet more memorable moments to a nation of 45 million people that consider him to be not far from a deity.

As many as 40,000 Argentina fans are estimated to have traveled to Qatar for this World Cup, according to the Argentine embassy in Qatar, and it sounded like all of them were inside the Lusail Stadium on Tuesday night.

As the clocked ticked deeper into injury time and the victory was beyond doubt, the Argentina bench and coaching staff began to join in with the rhythmic songs and chants that were being bellowed from the stands.

After the final whistle, the Argentina’s players stood in front of the huge wall of blue and white shirts and took in the adulation of their adoring fans.

It is almost impossible to believe that this is the same team that lost 2-1 to Saudi Arabia just three weeks ago in its opening group stage match – a performance so insipid and devoid of inspiration that it left some wondering whether Argentina would even make it out of the group.

Now, against either France or Morocco, Messi will have one final chance to lift the trophy he craves the most.

In Messi and Croatia’s Luka Modrić, both captains have led their countries in losing World Cup finals and this would be the last chance for both to get their hands on football’s most coveted prize.

Neither side featured among the tournament favorites ahead of Qatar 2022, but Croatia stunned the world four years ago in reaching the final and did so once again in the previous round in Qatar, eliminating pre-tournament favorite Brazil on penalties in a display of sheer grit and determination.

Modrić, Croatia’s star player and a living legend in the small Balkan nation, is battle-hardened in the biggest matches and, alongside Mateo Kovacic and Marcelo Brozovic, has been part of arguably the best midfield in Qatar.

Argentina, similarly, has also improved as the tournament has gone on – though it was hardly able to get any worse after that stunning defeat to Saudi Arabia.

The team, which now seems to believe the script is written for Messi’s last dance to end in glory on Sunday, is almost unrecognizable from the one that took to the pitch that day.

Though Croatia started the match marginally the better of the two teams, these players had played as many minutes as were possible so far in Qatar, winning against Japan and Brazil on penalties following two energy-sapping spells of extra time.

Their tired legs seemed to show early on in the Lusail Stadium and even one mistake at this level is likely to prove costly.

That proved to be the case for Croatia as, surprisingly, Modrić of all people gave the ball away in midfield and Gvardiol failed to track Alvarez, leaving Dominik Livakovic – twice Croatia’s shootout in Qatar – exposed one-on-one against the Manchester City forward.

Alvarez poked the ball around Livakovic, whose outstretched leg brought the striker down and Messi made no mistake in converting the resulting penalty, smashing it high into the top corner.

That was Messi’s 11th World Cup goal, taking him past Gabriel Batistuta as Argentina’s all-time leading goalscorer in World Cup finals.

The match quickly looked as though it was getting away from Croatia as Alvarez made it 2-0 just five minutes later.

Borna Sosa’s poor cross into the box sparked an Argentina counterattack, with Alvarez running three-quarters of the length of the pitch and, after two fortuitous ricochets in the box, buried the ball past Livakovic.

Only a stunning reflex save from Livakovic prevented the score getting any worse for Croatia before half time, but it would take something extra special, even for a team that is used to conjuring footballing miracles, to come back from this one.

However, Croatia offered little going forward in the second half, a combination of weary attacking play and stout Argentine defending, and its stay of execution lasted until the 70th minute.

Messi picked up the ball deep and ran Gvardiol ragged, before finding Alvarez inside the box to send the Argentina fans inside the Lusail Stadium into raptures.

Argentina, written off by many as inferior to other World Cup contenders, wasn’t supposed to make it to the final match in Qatar, but a determined and single-minded Messi has helped ensure that it has.

Messi leads rout of Croatia as Argentina reach World Cup final

Argentina beat Croatia 3-0 to reach the World Cup final as Lionel Messi worked his magic to move one win away from winning the trophy he covets most.

The world (aside from one of France or Morocco) wants Messi to win this World Cup.

FULL MATCH REPLAY

Messi scored the opener from the penalty spot, then Julian Alvarez scored a superb second and Messi then mesmerized us all to set up Alvarez to seal his double and Argentina’s spot in the final.

Croatia actually had the better chances before Argentina took the lead in the first half and the South American champs never looked back as they have now reached two of the last three World Cup finals.

[ LIVE: World Cup 2022 schedule, how to watch, scores, hub

They will play either France or Morocco in the final on Sunday, while Croatia will play the loser of the other semifinal in the third-place game on Saturday.

Messi and Alvarez the perfect double act

Messi glides between the lines and Alvarez stretches them. Together, they are a deadly duo and they ripped Croatia apart. Argentina had the perfect game plan as they sat back, soaked up pressure and then when the won it back in midfield with a secondary press (led by the excellent Enzo Fernandez, Leandro Paredes and Alexis Mac Allister) they played direct in devastating fashion. Messi is Messi but for so long he hasn’t really had another player up top who can take the pressure off him and provide space for him to be at his best. He now has that in Alvarez as his pace and relentless pressing opens up so many opportunities for Messi. The balance of this Argentine side is spot on and they can cause a shaky France defense so many problems, if it is Les Bleus they face in the final. Whoever they face, it seems pretty impossible to stop Messi and Alvarez in this kind of form.

Stars of the show

Lionel Messi: Who else!? Had magic whenever Argentina needed it and he is feeling it. The best World Cup of his esteemed career. So far.

Julian Alvarez: Scored two goals and won the penalty kick. His pace in-behind gave Croatia so many problems. Works so well alongside Messi.

Luka Modric: What more can he do? The little genius was so silky on the ball, as always, and helped Croatia control the game until the opening goal. The veteran may not play at another World Cup but he delivered another superb display, and so did Mateo Kovacic who will now try his best to take over from Modric.

Key storylines, players to watch closely

Obviously everyone will be watching Lionel Messi closely as his ridiculous assist against the Netherlands showcased his otherworldly talents. Others have been standing tall for Argentina too, especially Enzo Fernandez, Rodrigo de Paul and Alexis Mac Allister in midfield. At the back the likes of Lisandro Martinez, Cristian Romero and Nicolas Otamendi have had strong tournaments, while Marcos Acuna and Gonzalo Montiel will miss this game through suspension.

Croatia have the talented, and experienced, trio of Modric, Mateo Kovacic and Marcelo Brozovic holding down midfield, while youngster Josko Gvardiol has been sensational at center back and so has Borna Sosa at left back. The star in their penalty kick wins against Japan and Brazil has been goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic and Croatia will need more heroics from him if they’re going to upset Argentina.

Brazil vs. Croatia, Argentina vs. Netherlands

Brazil and Croatia kicked off the 2022 World Cup quarterfinals in style with a cagey penalty shootout win for the Europeans.

The Brazilians were knocking on the door all game but it took a late goal from Neymar in the 106th minute to break the 0-0 deadlock. Croatia’s Bruno Petkovic leveled things in extra time with a brilliant strike to send it to penalty kicks. In the shootout, it was all Croatia as the team didn’t miss and Dominik Livakovic was once again a monster in goal.

The Croatians advance to face the winner of Argentina and Netherlands.

2 p.m. ET Friday, Fox

The Dutch could easily give Argentina some problems, especially down the flanks. Cody Gakpo could work the Argentina defense and the three-man central defense for the Netherlands won’t give Lionel Messi much space to operate. Argentina at +125 feels like solid value though, but it’s worth pointing out how much oddsmakers aren’t confident in a bunch of goals. Under 2.5 is at -190.

Croatia joins Europe’s free-travel zone, Romania and Bulgaria barred

BRUSSELS/BREGANA BORDER CROSSING BETWEEN CROATIA AND SLOVENIA, Dec 8 (Reuters) – Croatia got the green light on Thursday to join Europe’s open travel zone, but Bulgaria and Romania were kept out because of opposition led by Austria over concerns about unauthorised immigration.

From 2023, people will not have to stop for border checks as they pass between Croatia and the rest of the so-called Schengen area – the world’s largest free-travel area seen as one of the main achievements of European integration.

It will “shorten the journey and the wait, thank God,” driver Nenad Benic said as he queued to cross the Bregana border point from Croatia into Slovenia on Thursday.

Romanian Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca said he was disappointed and would apply to enter the zone again. “We regret and honestly do not understand the inflexible position taken by Austria,” he said.

Bulgaria would also try again, its foreign minister said.

Croatia got the go-ahead to become the zone’s 27th member after tense talks between the bloc’s interior ministers in Brussels.

“To the citizens of Croatia: welcome, congratulations!,” European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson, said.

“To the citizens of Romania and Bulgaria – you deserve to be full members of Schengen, to have access to the free movement… I share the disappointment with the citizens of Bulgaria and Romania.”

Austrian Interior Minister Gerhard Karner said he had opposed Romania and Bulgaria because of security concerns.

“It is wrong that a system that does not work properly in many places would get expanded at this point,” he said.

Austria, he added, had recorded 100,000 illegal border crossings so far this year, including 75,000 people who had not been previously registered in other Schengen countries as they should have been.

Accession needs unanimous backing from all members – 22 EU nations as well as Lichtenstein, Iceland, Norway and Switzerland.

The Netherlands also opposed granting access to Bulgaria, citing concerns over corruption and migration.

Immigration has been a hot button issue in Europe since 2015 when more than a million people arrived across the Mediterranean Sea, mostly on smugglers’ boats, prompting the EU to tighten its borders and asylum laws.

U.N. data shows some 145,000 people have made the sea crossing this year while more than 1,800 perished trying to reach Europe’s shores, numbers way lower than in 2015.

But the EU’s border police Frontex said last month that 281,000 irregular entries had been recorded throughout the bloc in the first 10 months of 2022, up 77% from a year before and the highest since 2016.

With the Western Balkans route currently the most active, and the EU welcoming several million Ukrainians fleeing Russia’s war, worries about immigration have returned to the fore.

Belgium knocked out of World Cup after goalless draw with Croatia

Belgium was knocked out of the 2022 World Cup on Thursday after a goalless draw with Croatia left it third in Group F.

In what was a frustrating evening for the Red Devils, both Romelu Lukaku and Yannick Carrasco spurned good opportunities to score the goal which would have sent Belgium through.

As it was, the No. 2 ranked team in the world failed to make the breakthrough at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, meaning it won’t be featuring in the knockout phase of the tournament.

Morocco – which won its game against Canada on Thursday 2-1 – and Croatia qualified from the group, finishing first and second respectively.

For Belgium, it is another disappointing end to an international tournament and the Royal Belgian Football Association announced shortly afterward that manager Roberto Martínez had stepped down from his role as national team coach.

In his post-match interview, Martínez said that Belgium can go home with its “heads held high.”

“It’s not easy to win games in the World Cup. We weren’t ourselves in first game, we had a deserved defeat in the second game,” Martínez told the BBC.

“Today, we were ready, we created opportunities and, today, there is no regrets. We’re out, but we can leave with our heads held high.”

It was meant to be the last dance for the so-called ‘golden generation’ of Belgium.

With many of its squad approaching or in their mid-30s – including Dries Mertens, Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld – the World Cup in Qatar was seen by many as a final opportunity to get over the hump and win an international football title.

But although the squad was packed full of top-level players, the age profile of the team led some to believe that Belgium’s window had passed.

In fact, Belgium’s star midfielder Kevin De Bruyne said in an interview with the Guardian that his side had “no chance” to win the title because the players are “too old.”

And, needing a win in its final Group F game against Croatia to advance, Belgium’s weaknesses were clear to see in a slow-paced first half.

The team had a lot of possession without ever really breaking down an organized Croatia while also looking vulnerable on the break.

The biggest talking point of the half came midway through when Croatia thought it had a penalty – 2018 Ballon d’Or winner Luka Modrić had even placed the ball on the spot – only for referee Anthony Taylor to eventually rule out the spot kick for offside after a video assistant referee (VAR) review.

After the break and following the introduction of Lukaku, Belgium increased the tempo as it pressed for a vital goal – the Inter Milan striker heading straight into the arms of Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livaković.

Seconds later though, it was Croatia who had a good chance; Mateo Kovačić’s curled effort tipped away by Thibaut Courtois.

Despite Belgium being the team needing all three points, it was Croatia who ramped up the pressure. Courtois, playing in his 100th game for Belgium, had to be at his best to deny both Modrić and Marcelo Brozović.

Belgium nearly got the all-important breakthrough on the hour mark when Carrasco was denied by heroic block from a defender before Lukaku hit the post when he likely should have scored.

ust minutes later, Lukaku missed another glorious opportunity as he headed over from close range – the ball looked to have gone out moments before De Bruyne crossed it so the effort likely would have been ruled out.

As time ticked away, Belgium had two massive opportunities to rescue a victory.

In added time, Lukaku – with the goal at his mercy – could not sort his feet out and his weak effort was eventually gathered by the goalkeeper near the goal line.

And in the final few seconds, when it looked like Belgium would have one final chance, a superb recovery tackle from 20-year-old Joško Gvardiol saved the day for the Croatians.

It huffed and puffed, but Belgium could not find the vital goal. Afterwards, Martínez was asked about if this marks the end for the country’s ‘golden generation’ and the Spaniard was philosophical.

“You see Youri Tielemans and other young players – the ‘golden generation’ is doing something that is bringing the next generation on,” he said. “It’s not what names are on the pitch, the legacy can be left in many ways.”

Martínez added when asked if the result was a disappointment: “We wanted to get through but I’m sure the other national teams wanted to get through and that’s the tournament.

“In the previous World Cup, we won three games in the group stage, we wanted to go all the way.”

Japan vs. Costa Rica, Belgium vs. Morocco, Germany vs. Spain, Croatia vs. Canada

Is Germany looking at a must-win game over Spain on Sunday?

One of the best games of the group stage got even more enticing after Germany lost to Japan to open the tournament. And it’s entirely plausible that Germany could be eliminated from World Cup contention with a loss to the Spaniards.

Can Germany get a result? Its World Cup hopes will likely depend on it. Here’s what you need to know to bet Sunday’s games.

Spain vs. Germany

2 p.m. ET Sunday, FS1

If Japan wins or ties Costa Rica earlier in the day, Germany will be out of the World Cup with a loss. We’re a little surprised the over is at -145 and the under is at +100. We think this could be an especially cagey affair given the attacking talent on both teams. Our bold bet of the weekend is a parlay of the tie at +250 with the under at +100 if you can find a sports book that will offer that.
