3 dead after ‘random’ shooting at Yakima convenience store; Suspect dies of apparent suicide

A suspect believed to have been involved in a triple deadly shooting at a convenience store in Yakima has died of apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds, according to police.

Before the suspect took his own life, officers were called to a Circle K store around 3:30 a.m. for reports that a man had shot several people near 18th Street and Nob Hill Boulevard.

When police arrived at the scene, they found three people dead inside the Circle K store– two men and a woman. Police did not immediately release additional details about the victims.

Yakima Police Chief Matt Murray said there was an apparent second shooting across the street at the ARCO/AMPM convenience store, however, it turns out that the suspect shot his own car windows out because he locked himself out of the vehicle

The suspect drove away from the scene and was identified as 21-year-old Jarid Haddock, who is a Yakima County resident.

Murray said police have security video from the store and eyewitnesses have provided information.

“It appears to be a random situation,” Murray said. “There was no apparent conflict between the parties. The male just walked in and started shooting.”

A SWAT call went out around 2:16 p.m. and a home was surrounded– police believed the suspect was inside, but he was not.

The suspect borrowed a woman’s phone near the Target in Yakima and called his mother, telling her “several incriminating statements, like ‘I killed those people,’” Murray said during a press conference.

The suspect also told the woman he was going to kill himself.

The woman was able to get her phone back and distance herself from the suspect. She then called 911 and relayed what the suspect told her and told his mother on the phone.

Police said the suspect left and wound up near the Pizza Hut, which was diagonal from the Target. Officers arrived to that scene and heard gunshots.

When they followed the gunshots, they saw the man they believed to have been involved in the Circle K murders with apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

Medics attempted to save the man but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect had a large amount of ammunition and weapons on him when officers found him on the ground, Murray said. Murray said he wasn’t sure how much ammo he had on him, but it was “more than a normal person would carry.”

Murray said police do not yet know of a motive, if there was one. He also said they may never know, since Haddock died.

An autopsy will be done to confirm the identity of the man, but police firmly believe it was Haddock.

Riverside County deputy dies after shooting in Lake Elsinore

A deputy in Riverside County is dead after being shot Friday.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call in the 18500 block of Hilldale Lane in Lake Elsinore. The deputy, later identified as 30-year-old Darnell Calhoun, was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

One person was placed in custody after the shooting, RSO said.

According to Sheriff Chad Bianco, Calhoun responded to a child custody call around 4:20 p.m. After Calhoun arrived at the scene, a shootout ensued, ultimately killing the deputy.

Officials did not say what exactly led to the shooting.

Bianco said Calhoun joined the department on February 2022 after serving with the San Diego Police Department. Bianco said Calhoun was a husband, a son and was going to be a father.

“There is not one person with one negative to say about him,” Bianco said of Calhoun. “He was the most good, wholesome man you could ever imagine.”

Bryan Kohberger makes tasteless joke in Pennsylvania prison, report

MOSCOW, IDAHO – JANUARY 05: Bryan Kohberger is led away at the end of a hearing in Latah County District Court on January 5, 2023, in Moscow, Idaho. Kohberger has been arrested for the murders of four University of Idaho students in November 2022. (P

Idaho murder suspect Bryan Kohberger made a tasteless joke while locked up in a Pennsylvania prison for five days, according to a new report.

A source inside the Monroe County Correctional Facility told NewsNation that the accused mass murderer was asked why he killed four college students in Moscow, Idaho. “I didn’t do anything,” he allegedly shot back.

When the 28-year-old Ph.D. student was asked why he had been in Moscow – an eight-mile drive from his apartment in Pullman, Washington – he allegedly retorted, “The shopping is better in Idaho.”

Kohberger spent five days locked up at the Stroudsburg prison after his arrest Friday at his parents’ home in Albrightsville, Pennsylvania, on charges he knifed Kaylee Goncalves, Ethan Chapin, Madison Mogen and Xana Kernodle to death on Nov. 13 in a rented home near campus.

Kohberger was outfitted with a suicide vest and housed in a cell with a glass door that offered little privacy, according to the report.

Another inmate allegedly threatened Kohberger, who had been studying criminology at Washington State University.

“F— you, I’m going to kill you,” seethed the unnamed inmate as he allegedly flashed Kohberger his middle finger, NewsNation reported.

The source added that Kohberger’s request for vegan meals at the facility was granted. He dined on peanut butter and jelly, apple sauce, vegetables, beans, rice, cereal and maybe some potatoes, according to the news site.

The source described Kohberger as “creepy” and said he got a shower every day, but he had to wear a suicide smock in his cell.

Kohberger waived extradition Tuesday in the Monroe County Courthouse and was flown to Pullman, Washington, the next day in a Pennsylvania State Police Pilatus PC-12 single-engine turbo-prop plane, flight records show.

He’s due to go before a judge Thursday morning in Latah County Court to face four charges of first-degree murder and one count of felony burglary.

The probable cause affidavit outlining the details of the alleged knife-wielding rampage against the four University of Idaho students will be released Thursday, officials said.

Moscow police have not disclosed a motive or recovered the fixed-blade knife they believe Kohberger used in the horrific attack.

Athena Strand found dead after being kidnapped by FedEx driver: Wise County sheriff

The search for a missing Wise County little girl has come to a terrible end.

Wise County Sheriff Lane Akin confirmed that 7-year-old Athena Strand’s body was found Friday afternoon in Boyd, Texas. It’s about six miles from the Cottondale Fire Department.

Akin says a tip led them to a FedEx driver, who is believed to have abducted Athena from her home Wednesday night. The driver confessed to kidnapping her. Athena likely died an hour after her disappearance, the sheriff said.

Authorities say the driver, 31-year-old Tanner Lynn Horner of Lake Worth, was an independent contractor. He is being held in the Wise County Jail and is charged with capital murder and aggravated kidnapping. He is being held on a $1.5 million bond.

Athena’s biological mother showed up to Friday’s news conference. She didn’t want to talk on camera but said she is desperate to have her daughter home.

FOX 4’s Macy Jenkins was speaking to neighbors Friday afternoon off County Road 4599 when they were approached by law enforcement and told to move back immediately, but her body was not found there.

Sheriff Akin says information from interviews initially led them to that area. But it turns out that was incorrect as her body was recovered elsewhere.

Acting FBI Agent In Charge Jim Dwyer says it was digital evidence that led them to the FedEx driver, but he would not specify.

Sheriff Akin says Athena’s case has personally been one of the most challenging he’s faced.

“It’s one of the most difficult investigations I have been involved in because it’s a child,” he said. “It just hits you in your heart.”

Earlier Friday night in Lake Worth, Fort Worth police set up roadblocks on Somerville Place Road. Akin says that is where the suspect lives. They would not elaborate on whether or not any evidence

Athena got off of her school bus on Wednesday at 4:15 p.m.

Athena’s stepmother called 911 at 6:40 p.m. to report her missing from her home in Paradise. She told investigators there was an argument and later the girl was not in her room. The sheriff says she waited an hour to tell authorities because she went looking for the girl first.

A large group of law enforcement officers, more than 300 volunteers, dog teams, helicopters and thermal imaging technology participated in the search.

“We were able to cover vast amounts of area and talk to tons of people more quickly than we would have without them,” said Wise County Chief Deputy Craig Johnson.

Akin says the girl’s stepmother was the only adult home at the time of her disappearance. The father was on his way to South Texas for a deer hunting trip when he was told what happened.

The Wise County Sheriff’s Office says both of the girl’s parents and the stepmother have cooperated throughout the process. Akin said he did not recall any previous calls to the home.

Athena’s mother, Maitlyn Gandy, lives in southern Oklahoma. She told FOX 4 that she does have sole custody of her daughter but allowed her to spend the fall semester in Texas with her father and stepmother.

“We talked to both sides: the mother and the father and the stepmother. They have been very cooperative,” Akin said.

Athena’s mother drove down from Oklahoma and was seen talking to investigators at the search site.

Athena’s cause of death has not been determined. Her body is being taken to the medical examiner’s office.

2 adults, 3 children found dead inside Phoenix home

A family of five was found dead inside a north Phoenix home Wednesday morning, police confirmed, and it’s being investigated as a homicide.

Phoenix Fire hazmat crews responded to a home near 7th Avenue and Northern because of a reported “hazardous situation” and a possible unresponsive person just after 8 a.m. on Nov. 16.

Two adults and 3 kids were found dead inside with obvious signs of trauma, says Phoenix Police Sgt. Melissa Soliz, adding that a suspect isn’t believed to be on the loose.

It’s not clear what led up to the family being killed.

Southwest Gas turned off the gas to the house as a precaution and later said that crews did find a presence of gas, which made it a bit difficult for first responders to investigate the scene right away.

Numerous ambulances and police vehicles were outside the home, but no other details about the situation were confirmed.

No names were released.

The investigation is continuing throughout the day.
