FBI says it has ‘credible information of a broad threat’ to synagogues in New Jersey

CNN
 —

The FBI in Newark, New Jersey, said Thursday afternoon it has received “credible information of a broad threat to synagogues” in the state, according to a tweet from the office.

“We ask at this time that you take all security precautions to protect your community and facility. We will share more information as soon as we can. Stay alert. In case of emergency call police,” the post said.

In a second tweet, the agency said it was taking a “proactive measure” with that warning, while “investigative processes are carried out.”

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said he is in touch with the FBI, the state’s Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness and the state attorney general.

“We are closely monitoring the situation and are working with local law enforcement to ensure that all houses of worship are protected,” Murphy wrote on Twitter.

Over the past few years, the US has seen a rise in antisemitic incidents, with 941 incidents in 2015 jumping to 2,717 tracked in 2021 by the Anti-Defamation League. On Thursday, the ADL said it was working with the FBI to address the credible threat and advised synagogues and Jewish organizations to “remain calm and in heightened state of alert.”

Just over four years ago, a gunman stormed into a synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and killed 11 people in the deadliest attack on Jewish people on US soil.

The FBI’s warning on Thursday comes amid continued reports across the country of anti-Jewish bigotry, including multiple antisemitic messages that appeared in public spaces in Jacksonville, Florida, over the weekend, and a group of demonstrators who hung banners over a Los Angeles freeway earlier in October showing support for antisemitic comments that were made by Kanye West. Photos also showed the group with their arms raised in what appeared to be the Nazi salute. Los Angeles officials condemned the incident.

West previously made a series of antisemitic outbursts, notably on October 8, when he tweeted he was “going death con 3 [sic] On JEWISH PEOPLE,” and also that, “You guys have toyed with me and tried to black ball anyone whoever opposes your agenda,” without specifying what group he was addressing, according to the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine records pulled by CNN.

His tweet was removed and Twitter locked his account. In an interview conducted after the controversial tweet, West told Piers Morgan that he was sorry for the people that he hurt but said he didn’t regret making the remark.

CNN has reached out to the FBI for more information on their tweet.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

Unlike Kyle Rittenhouse, Travis McMichael ‘didn’t come off as credible,’ experts say

Travis McMichael sealed his fate when he took the stand in his own defense in the murder trial related to the death of Ahmaud Arbery, a 25-year-old Black man who was chased down and killed by three white men in what prosecutors called a “modern-day lynching,” legal experts said.

A nearly all-white jury convicted McMichael of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, false imprisonment and criminal attempt to commit a felony. His father, Gregory McMichael, and their neighbor William “Roddie” Bryan were acquitted of the top charge and convicted of others, including felony murder.

The defendants had argued self-defense, as well as acting within their rights under Georgia’s citizen’s arrest law, which was legal at the time but changed after the shooting.

Once self-defense was claimed, the burden fell on prosecutors to disprove the defense’s argument beyond a reasonable doubt.

But Travis McMichael “really didn’t come off as credible,” criminal defense attorney Bernarda Villalona said on NBC News.

“From Travis McMichael’s own mouth, he knew Ahmaud Arbery was not armed; he knew Ahmaud Arbery didn’t threaten him; he knew Ahmaud Arbery didn’t have anything in his pants,” she said. “The only threat here was two pickup trucks chasing an unarmed African American male.”

Wednesday’s verdict came just five days after the acquittal of Kyle Rittenhouse, who was accused of shooting three men, two of them fatally, during protests last year in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Rittenhouse’s defense attorneys argued that their client was the one facing danger after being threatened with a skateboard and chased down the street during his encounters with the men.

That argument and Rittenhouse’s own testimony, plus a grainy video played in the courtroom showing chaos in the streets, appeared to support his claim of self-defense.

That wasn’t the case during the trial over Arbery’s killing.

“Travis McMichael was a horrible witness,” said former federal prosecutor Glenn Kirschner, a legal analyst for NBC News and MSNBC. “Rarely have I seen a defendant who’s put on the stand by his defense team really perform so poorly.”

On the stand last week, Travis McMichael shared his version of what happened on Feb. 23, 2020, when the McMichaels and Bryan chased Arbery in their trucks after they spotted him in their neighborhood outside Brunswick, Georgia.

Travis McMichael shot Arbery with a shotgun at close range. Bryan filmed the fatal encounter on his cellphone. Video evidence appeared to support the prosecution’s narrative that it was Arbery, not the defendants, who was running for his life and then fought back in his final moments.

“While we can celebrate that justice was done here, if there hadn’t been a video, these men probably would have gotten away with it,” said former federal prosecutor Cynthia Alksne, a legal analyst for MSNBC. “I don’t think without this video we’d have a conviction.”

Travis McMichael said that on the day of the shooting, he was trying to get his young son to take a nap when his father came into the house “in an almost frantic state” and said the person they believed was responsible for crimes in the neighborhood had just run by.

Travis McMichael said he grabbed his shotgun and got into the driver’s side of his truck. Gregory McMichael was in the passenger seat. The two men drove in the direction they believed Arbery had run and eventually caught up with him.

“If you are the first aggressor, then you really have an uphill battle convincing a jury that you have a right to take the life of another,” Kirschner said. “Travis McMichael was the first aggressor, the third aggressor, the fourth aggressor, and, ultimately, these three men anointed themselves judge, jury and executioner of a young man who was doing nothing but running in a part of town that apparently offended the McMichaels and Mr. Bryan.”

Travis McMichael’s testimony was a “train wreck for him,” Kirschner added. “He should have been convicted.”

UK warns of highly credible terror threat at Kabul airport

LONDON — Officials from the U.K. have warned of a “highly credible” threat of an attack at Kabul airport by Islamic State militants.

It comes as a massive evacuation effort enters its final stages, with countries scrambling to get people out of Taliban-controlled Afghanistan ahead of an Aug. 31 deadline set by President Joe Biden.

Some European countries have already begun to halt flights from Hamid Karzai International Airport.

The U.S. and other Western countries involved in the evacuation have urged people to stay away from the airport amid growing concerns about possible terrorist activity.

The U.K.’s Armed Forces Minister James Heappey told Sky News Thursday that an “imminent, lethal attack” could be about to take place at Kabul airport.

“Intelligence over the course of the week has got ever more certain around the highly credible, imminent, lethal attack on the airport or the handling centers being used by western forces,” Heappey told Sky News.

The U.K.’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, meanwhile, issued new guidance to warn of “an ongoing and high threat of terrorist attack.” It urged people not to travel to the airport and move away to a safe location to await further advice.

Late Wednesday, the U.S. embassy in Kabul urged U.S. citizens in Afghanistan to avoid traveling to the capital city’s airport, citing an unspecified security threat outside the gates.

“Because of security threats outside the gates of Kabul airport, we are advising U.S. citizens to avoid traveling to the airport and to avoid airport gates at this time unless you receive individual instructions from a U.S. government representative to do so,” the security alert said.

“U.S. citizens who are at the Abbey Gate, East Gate, or North Gate now should leave immediately,” it added.

The U.S. embassy in Kabul advised Americans to be aware of their surroundings at all times, follow the instructions of local authorities, have a contingency plan for emergencies and monitor local media and the State Department for developments.

Evacuations enter final stage

The U.S. administration has not shared the total number of Americans and Afghan nationals that it is aiming to evacuate before troops depart at the end of the month.

NATO allies and members of the president’s own party have pushed for an extension of the withdrawal deadline, expressing doubt that the coalition can evacuate all the Afghans who are eligible to leave in such a short time frame.

However, Biden on Tuesday reiterated to leaders of the G-7, NATO, United Nations and European Union that the United States will withdraw its military from Afghanistan by the end of the month.

Denmark said its last flight out of the Afghan capital left on Thursday, with Defense Minister Trine Bramsen reportedly warning: “It is no longer safe to fly in or out of Kabul.”

The Dutch government also expects to carry out its last evacuation flight on Thursday due to the deteriorating security situation, Reuters reported. It described the decision as a “painful moment” because people who are eligible for evacuation to the country will now be left behind.

French Prime Minister Jean Castex told French radio RTL on Thursday that the country would no longer be able to evacuate people from Friday evening onward as a result of the American withdrawal.

Pennsylvania Republican: Election audit happening without ‘credible evidence of fraud’

Republican Pennsylvania state Sen. Dan Laughlin on Thursday came out against the GOP-backed audit of the 2020 election results in his state, becoming the party’s first statewide-elected official to do so.

Speaking to Reuters, Laughlin said that the efforts to investigate President BidenJoe BidenBriahna Joy Gray: White House thinks extending student loan pause is a ‘bad look’ Biden to meet with 11 Democratic lawmakers on DACA: report Former New York state Senate candidate charged in riot MORE‘s November victory in Pennsylvania are being made “absent credible evidence of fraud” and will not change the outcome.

“The current attempt to discredit the 2020 election results runs headlong into an unmistakable truth,” Laughlin said. “Donald TrumpDonald TrumpFormer New York state Senate candidate charged in riot Trump called acting attorney general almost daily to push election voter fraud claim: report GOP senator clashes with radio caller who wants identity of cop who shot Babbitt MORE lost Pennsylvania because Donald Trump received fewer votes.”

Last week, voting machines in Pennsylvania’s Fulton County were decertified following an election audit. Acting Pennsylvania Secretary of the Commonwealth Veronica Degraffenreid said in a letter that the audit itself, conducted by software company Wake TSI, had compromised the machines, adding that the process was “not transparent or bipartisan.”

The voting machines were handed over to Wake TSI following a request from state Sen. Doug Mastriano (R), a staunch ally of Trump’s who has pushed conspiracy theories regarding the 2020 election. Mastriano arranged buses to attend the Washington “Stop the Steal” rally on Jan. 6 that preceded the deadly Capitol insurrection.

As Reuters notes, Laughlin’s remarks place him directly against Mastriano, who was argued in favor of a “forensic” audit modeled after the one currently taking place in Arizona’s Maricopa County. Both Laughlin and Mastriano are eyeing a run for Pennsylvania governor.

Laughlin told Reuters that efforts to “rummage through already counted ballots while employing statistical tricks” in an attempt to find fraud would only negatively impact his party and aid Democrats in fundraising. The state senator pointed out that Republicans generally fared well in Pennsylvania, winning state treasurer and auditor general for the first time in decades.

“That’s not a sign of a stolen election,” Laughlin said.
