Google AI Tool Creates Music from Written Descriptions

This week, Google researchers published a paper describing results from an artificial intelligence (AI) tool built to create music.

The tool, called MusicLM, is not the first AI music tool to launch. But the examples Google provides demonstrate musical creative ability based on a limited set of descriptive words.

AI shows how complex computer systems have been trained to behave in human-like ways.

Tools like ChatGPT can quickly produce, or generate, written documents that compare well with the work by humans. ChatGPT and similar systems require powerful computers to operate complex machine-learning models. The San Francisco-based company OpenAI launched ChatGPT late last year.

Developers train such systems on huge amounts of data to learn methods for recreating different forms of content. For example, computer-generated content could include written material, design elements, art or music.

ChatGPT has recently received a lot of attention for its ability to generate complex writings and other content from just a simple description in natural language.

Google’s MusicLM

Google engineers explain the MusicLM system this way:

First, a user comes up with a word or words that describe the kind of music they want the tool to create.

For example, a user could enter this short phrase into the system: “a continuous calming violin backed by a soft guitar sound.” The descriptions entered can include different music styles, instruments or other existing sounds.

Several different music examples produced by MusicLM were published online. Some of the generated music came from just one- or two-word descriptions, such as “jazz,” “rock” or “techno.” The system created other examples from more detailed descriptions containing whole sentences.

In one example, Google researchers include these instructions to MusicLM: “The main soundtrack of an arcade game. It is fast-paced and upbeat, with a catchy electric guitar riff. The music is repetitive and easy to remember, but with unexpected sounds…”

In the resulting recording, the music seems to keep very close to the description. The team said that the more detailed the description is, the better the system can attempt to produce it.

The MusicLM model operates similarly to the machine-learning systems used by ChatGPT. Such tools can produce human-like results because they are trained on huge amounts of data. Many different materials are fed into the systems to permit them to learn complex skills to create realistic works.

In addition to generating new music from written descriptions, the team said the system can also create examples based on a person’s own singing, humming, whistling or playing an instrument.

The researchers said the tool “produces high-quality music…over several minutes, while being faithful to the text conditioning signal.”

At this time, the Google team has not released the MusicLM models for public use. This differs from ChatGPT, which was made available online for users to experiment with in November.

However, Google announced it was releasing a “high-quality dataset” of more than 5,500 music-writing pairs prepared by professional musicians called MusicCaps. The researchers took that step to assist in the development of other AI music generators.

The MusicLM researchers said they believe they have designed a new tool to help anyone quickly and easily create high-quality music selections. However, the team said it also recognizes some risks linked to the machine learning process.

One of the biggest issues the researchers identified was “biases present in the training data.” A bias might be including too much of one side and not enough of the other. The researchers said this raises a question “about appropriateness for music generation for cultures underrepresented in the training data.”

The team said it plans to continue to study any system results that could be considered cultural appropriation. The goal would be to limit biases through more development and testing.

In addition, the researchers said they plan to keep improving the system to include lyrics generation, text conditioning and better voice and music quality.

SpaceX rocket creates eerie blue spiral in night sky over Hawaii

A navigation satellite launched by SpaceX left a brief spiral visible over Hawaii, according to reports.

SpaceX sent a Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) into space for the U.S. Space Force on Wednesday (Jan. 18) at 7:24 a.m. EST (1224 GMT). Shortly afterwards, the Subaru Telescope spotted a mesmerizing spiral shape overhead.

“The spiral seems to be related to the SpaceX company’s launch of a new satellite,” Subaru Telescope (opens in new tab) officials from the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan wrote in a tweet (opens in new tab). The missive also showcased an image of the spiral over their telescope atop Maunakea on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Citizen scientist and satellite tracker Scott Tilley, chiming in (opens in new tab) on the thread, said the position of the spiral was a close match for where the second stage Falcon 9 rocket was expected to be in the minutes after launch. (The first stage returned to Earth on a drone ship at sea.)

It’s far from the first time a similar glowing, circular feature was spotted after a SpaceX launch. People in locations as distant as New Zealand have seen such spirals overhead after Falcon 9 activity.

During past appearances of the spiral, space watchers have said the shape arises as the upper stage of the Falcon 9 vents unneeded fuel during its long descent into the ocean.

“The upper stage was probably spinning on its longest axis to stabilize flight orientation, hence the spiral shape,” Spaceweather.com wrote (opens in new tab) of a June 2022 launch. “Similar spirals have been seen after previous Falcon 9 launches.”

Related: What’s that in the sky? It’s a SpaceX rocket, but it sure doesn’t look like it

The Falcon 9 is known to leave behind many interesting patterns post-launch, such as “space jellyfish” in the predawn sky over Florida’s Space Coast.

Those shapes happen when gas in the rocket engine’s nozzles are at higher pressure than the atmosphere, and the gas is illuminated by sunlight, according to a past tweet (opens in new tab) from Chris Combs, a professor of aerodynamics and mechanical engineering at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

SpaceX has sent five missions to space in the first 19 days of 2023. If they keep up this pace, the company would send 96 rockets aloft by the time the year closes, but weather and technical factors can always induce delays. In 2022, SpaceX had a record-setting 61 launches, nearly doubling its 2021 record of 31 liftoffs.

Florida could lose top recruit after massive NIL deal creates controversy

The University of Florida could be close to losing a top football recruit after a $13 million NIL deal has caused some controversy.

Quarterback Jaden Rashada, an All-American from Pittsburg, Calif., is a four-star recruit who signed an NIL deal worth that massive price tag on Nov. 10 with the Gator Collective, reports The Athletic.

“I would venture to say the Gator Collective is paying more guaranteed money than any group in the country,” Eddie Rojas, a former Gators baseball player and head of the Gator Collective, said in April. “When I write a contract, I want to make sure that we actually have the money in our account.”

It doesn’t appear that Rojas’ group did have that money, as they reneged on the deal with Rashada. The Athletic states that the deal had presumptive support from one of the Gator Collective’s top boosters, Hugh Hathcock, who donated almost $13 million last year.

But on Dec. 7, Rashada received a letter from Rojas wishing to terminate their deal. While it’s unclear the exact reason why that happened, the Gators’ football program was caught by surprise as they are not allowed to know specifics of NIL deals with players.

FLORIDA QUARTERBACK DISMISSED FROM TEAM FOLLOWING CHILD PORNOGRAPHY ARREST: REPORTS

Rashada, though, is still a part of the Gators’ recruiting class for 2023, yet there’s still a catch: He hasn’t enrolled yet.

Early spring enrollment, which is usually what top recruits do to get in the building as quickly as possible to make the transition into college easier, ended on Jan. 13.

And while Rashada did indicate last week that he intends to go to Florida, the early-enrollment status still leaves him in limbo.

Harlen Rashada, Jaden’s father, told 247Sports that he and his son are “working through some things right now with Florida and hoping that they get resolved soon.”

FLORIDA PULLS SCHOLARSHIP FROM TOP QB RECRUIT AFTER VIDEO OF HIM SAYING N-WORD SURFACES

“I just think there’s a high level of trust on both ends there,” Florida head coach Billy Napier said of Rashada when the recruiting class was announced. “I’m really excited about what he’s going to bring to our team. . . . Can’t compliment Jaden enough relative to who he is as a person, as a leader, his character. Jaden is a guy who came here and fell in love with the University of Florida and really connected with a lot of people here. It was sincere.”

Rashada has reportedly been offered a lesser NIL deal than the $13 million – still in the seven-figure range – but litigation could be on the table after the Gator Collective decided to pull the deal. That could only come if he decides not to agree to a new deal.
