Happy cats or soup? How one couple’s felines continue to control of their Vitamix

There’s just one problem.

They’ve been unable to open the box for nearly a month because their three cats are taking turns sitting on it.

Unusually drawn to the box, the three felines rotate 24/7, so the box is never without a cat sitting on top. In order to not disturb the cats, who rule the house according to Jessica Gerson-Neeves, they’ve decided to let the standoff play out until someone gives in.

Plus, it’s making them laugh, along with a lot of people on the internet.

Developing a strange fascination with their ongoing battle, CNN contacted Jessica to check on the current status of the couple’s three cats at in their home on Vancouver Island in British Columbia.

While we spoke, their cat Max was sitting on the box.

So why don’t they just move him and open the box?

“Because everything really is bad, bad, bad and this is something that is ridiculous and funny and very, very low stakes. Like, there’s nothing at all about this that is either bad or sad,” Jessica laughs.

She explains it all started the day the Vitamix was dropped at their doorstep. She moved it to the kitchen and placed it on the floor for what she thought would be a few seconds. That’s when Max jumped on. He looked cute so she snapped a picture.

“This definitely started out just as like, of course, we think our cats are cute because everyone who loves cats thinks their own cats are the cutest cats. So we take pictures every time they do anything,” Jessica says. “They really are taking turns and you know, everyone goes, but what about meal times? Come on meal times! Max is not — and never really has been — food motivated. The other two are very food motivated, but Max just doesn’t super care. They’ll eat, but if there’s something he’s more interested in, he will happily tend to that and not worry about food.”

When Max isn’t on the box, one of his 13-year-old brothers, George: Destroyer of Worlds (“sentient potato”) and Lando Calrissian (“the questionably sentient dust bunny,”) is.

The box doesn’t have an unusual feel or smell to it, from what Jessica can tell, it’s just a box.

“I swear I have a nose like a bloodhound and it doesn’t smell like anything to me. So if they’re smelling something, it’s gotta be real subtle,” Jessica says.

She started posting updates in an online cat group and the response was “fast and overwhelming.”

There has not been one moment the box has been free while the couple has been home, either alone or together. They even send picture proof to each other showing who’s on the box. They’ve tiptoed out of the bedroom in the middle of the night to find yes, a cat on the box, guarding it.

“We are spending so much of our days laughing at this point at the response at the comments and on each update,” Jessica says. “Because every day we post an update and I pick from the funniest or cutest pictures.”

At this point the cats are (kind of) into it, as much as cats can be.

“They obviously know that we are interested because we’re taking a lot of pictures and we’re interacting with them when they’re on the box,” Jessica says.

Jessica wrote a letter to Vitamix, thinking that they would get a kick out of what was going on too.

“I figured their social media manager would see it and pass it on to other people at the company,” she explains. “Everyone would get a kick out of it.”

The company sent the couple three empty “decoy” boxes.

They tried one, but the cats quickly realized they prefer the sturdier box with the blender inside.

“This valiant attempt was unsuccessful,” Jessica laughs. “Without internal support structure, we kind of had to figure out a way to put stuff in there. So the cats wouldn’t fall through.”

To all the people who tell them to just take the cats off the box, Jessica gets it.

“Have we tried super hard? No, because obviously we could pick up the cats and set them on the floor. Sure. They don’t weigh a lot.”

Instead, the two are trying to make share their amusement.

“This is what our household is like. Our lives involve a great deal of laughter and love. We keep ourselves going with a good sense of humor and trying to be patient. And as, as my wife says, to find joy where it lives,” Jessica says.

And so the $450 blender remains in the box. No soup. No smoothies.

“We’re absolutely inundated with people saying, oh my God, no, no, no. Don’t, don’t rush this to a conclusion. Please take your time,” Jessica says, adding “there will come a point when we will want to use our new blender.”

What will they make first?

“My wife is very excited about smoothies. I’m a big fan of soup. I’m really looking forward to some good hot soup. But I think at this point, when we finally get access to the blender, we’re both looking forward to a nice margarita, which we’ve earned.”

Pope Francis Calls Couples Who Choose Pets Over Children Selfish

Earlier this week, Pope Francis straight-up shamed me and my childfree, pet-owning kind.

“Today…we see a form of selfishness,” the Pope told a general audience at the Vatican. “We see that some people do not want to have a child.”

“Many, many couples do not have children because they do not want to, or they have just one, but they have two dogs, two cats…Yes, dogs and cats take the place of children,” he continued. “This denial of fatherhood or motherhood diminishes us, it takes away our humanity. And in this way civilization becomes aged and without humanity…and our homeland suffers, as it does not have children.” This isn’t the first time the Pope’s said nonsense like this. In 2014, he claimed that couples who get pets, travel the world, and remain childless by choice end up alone, “with the bitterness of loneliness.”

But hold on—the Pope is childless, too. So how are we selfish by refusing to do the very thing he ain’t even doing himself?

As a 44-year-old woman who’s never wanted kids, I can’t tell you how hard it’s been to not have them. I’m not just talking about condoms, IUDs, and birth control pills. I’m talking about living in a society that constantly shames and pressures women into motherhood while simultaneously worshipping and shitting on mothers. Besides simply not wanting kids—which should be reason enough for not having them—I constantly have to explain why I’m not willing to risk becoming a maternal mortality statistic or losing a majority of my income after giving birth. I’m also not psyched about the possibility of having to house adult children forever because the economy sucks so bad. Yes, I have a supportive, emotionally intelligent partner (and a dog) but my husband doesn’t want any kids either, and that’s our prerogative. Besides, it’s not a stretch to say that many childless women who are coupled with straight men might as well be mothers. Sure, they’re not technically rearing kids—just, you know, a man-child.

Growing up with my dad taught me that weaponized incompetence is one of the most manipulative and effective tactics men use to exploit women for labor. He would brag about the perfect bed-making skills he learned in the Navy, yet feign ignorance when the time came to fold a damn sheet or do any basic house chore. Today, wives have taken to social media to complain about their grown-ass male partners who also act like they don’t know how to wash clothes or the dishes.

A 2019 global report found that a whopping 85% of men said they’d do anything to be involved in caring for their new child, and yet found that men rely way more on their female partners for knowledge and information on parenting than vice versa. And lest I remind you that women in the United States reportedly spend two hours more each day cleaning, cooking, taking care of children and doing other unpaid work than men. Men clearly have this fantasy about fatherhood and being the head of the household, but fantasy does not a father make.

In 2019, I wrote an article explaining how men are emotional golddiggers. The older women I spoke with whose children had become adults revealed they were secretly waiting for their husbands to kick the bucket so they could go live their best lives with their lady friends, Golden Girls-style. They were over being unpaid therapists, cheerleaders, life coaches, porn stars, best friends, entertainers, maids, and mommies to adult babies. Raising kids is way harder than it should be, especially in the U.S. where mothers receive little to no help from the government or their employers, but women are also getting sick and tired of raising men. Yet, women are more likely to stay with a lazy, entitled husband if there are kids involved.

So the Pope is actually right, in a way. It is risky for hetero couples to not have kids, specifically for the men. Who’s gonna take care of all these straight dudes if women don’t want them anymore?

Pope Scolds Couples Who Choose Pets Over Kids

Agostino Paravicini Bagliani, the author of “Il Bestiario del Papa” (The Pope’s Bestiary), said that for many centuries popes had used animals, like the dove, “to create and confirm the authority and sovereignty” of the papacy, a reinforcement of its power. It was unclear, however, exactly how many popes had domestic pets, he noted; the most famous is Pope Pius II, who lived during the Renaissance and wrote about his dog, Musetta.

Other Renaissance popes also had pets, notably Paul II, who had a monkey; Sixtus IV, who had an eagle; and Leo X, who had a menagerie of exotic animals, including lions, leopards and bears, Mr. Paravicini Bagliani said.

He also cited a famous photograph of Pius XII with a goldfinch perched on his finger.

Pius VI kept a dog, Diana, at the summer papal residence in Castel Gandolfo.

Francis, too, has demonstrated that he respects and cares for animals.

In his 2015 encyclical on the environment, “Laudato Si’,” or “Praise Be to You. On Care for Our Common Home,” for example, he repeatedly pointed to interconnectedness of humans and all creatures.

“Because all creatures are connected, each must be cherished with love and respect, for all of us as living creatures are dependent on one another,” Francis wrote.

And during his papacy, he’s petted a number of animals, mostly dogs.

On Wednesday, Francis said the world was experiencing “an age of notorious orphanhood” that could be countered, in part, by caring for children, either through adoption or naturally. “It is riskier not to have them,” Francis said. “Think about this, please.”

One animal rights group said it wasn’t an either/or situation.

“It is strange to think that the pope considers love in our lives to be limited in quantity, and that giving it to someone takes it away from others,” said Massimo Comparotto, the president of the Italian branch of the International Organization for the Protection of Animals.

“Perhaps the pontiff is unaware of the enormous sacrifices that volunteers endure” to help save animals, he said in a statement. “Anyone who thinks that life is sacred loves life beyond species,” he said.

Chinese-American Couple’s Record $125 Million Donation To New York Museum

In return, the newly renovated space will bear their names, the museum said.

New York, United States:

A Chinese-American couple has donated a record $125 million to New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art to renovate the space that houses its collection of modern and contemporary art, the institution said Tuesday.

The donation by Oscar Tang and his wife Agnes Hsu-Tang is the largest capital gift the Met — one of New York City’s biggest tourist attractions — has ever received in its 151-year history.

In return, the newly renovated space will bear their names, the museum said.

The injection of funds will allow the museum to carry out a long-postponed project offering a multidisciplinary “re-envisioning” of 80,000 square feet (7,400 square meters) of galleries and public space that house its collection of modern and contemporary art.

“The Modern Wing will encompass a full renovation of the current modern and contemporary galleries, which The Met has been seeking to renovate for more than a decade,” the museum said.

“With this remarkable gift, Oscar and Agnes are enabling The Met to realize its ambitious mission for future generations,” said Daniel Weiss, president of the iconic museum located next to Central Park.

Tang, an 83-year-old retired financier who has acted as a trustee for the museum for three decades, has financed previous exhibitions, art acquisitions, room extensions and other expenses over the years.

He has also donated works of art, including 20 Chinese paintings from the 11th to 18th centuries and the 10th century Song dynasty masterpiece “Riverbank,” the museum said.

Couple’s ongoing detention likely means Turkish intel still fishing for Israeli info

Turkey’s arrest and detention of an Israeli tourist couple last week, and its insistence on treating them as supposed spies, would appear to run counter to the direction of the country’s foreign policy over the past year.

Having spent most of the last decade picking fights with regional rivals like Greece and Egypt — and, of course, Israel — Ankara has found itself increasingly isolated of late, with Joe Biden, a personal adversary of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, now in the White House.

As he did with Europe and Egypt, once it was clear Biden was going to be the next United States president, Erdogan decided he’d better change his tune toward Israel.

“Our heart desires that we can move our relations with them to a better point,” the Turkish leader said in December. Reports have since emerged that Turkey could return its ambassador to Tel Aviv.

In July, Erdogan congratulated Isaac Herzog on being sworn into his new role as Israel’s president, and noted the importance of relations between the two countries for the sake of regional stability. A spokesman for Erdogan’s AKP party said that in the wake of the call, a “framework emerged” to improve ties between Ankara and Jerusalem.

And yet, Turkey is now holding two Israeli bus drivers, couple Mordy and Natali Oknin, on suspicion of espionage, for photographing Erdogan’s palace in Istanbul last week.

No part of the Turkish claims seems likely. Israel has far more sophisticated ways of attaining photographs of landmark buildings — which doesn’t seem like an especially pressing intelligence priority — than sending two Israeli citizens to openly take pictures in front of them, while speaking Hebrew and posting details of their trip on social media.

Even if Turkish authorities were initially suspicious, the fact that they didn’t release the couple — or at least expel them from the country — after an initial interrogation points to this episode being a piece of a larger puzzle.

“The incident contradicts Turkey’s on-and-off overtures to Israel since mid-2020, which were met positively — yet also with skepticism — on the Israeli side,” said Selin Nasi, London Representative of the Ankara Policy Center.

Searching for a bargaining chip

The arrest could have been orchestrated by elements in Turkey’s security establishment that are trying to make it harder for Erdogan to repair ties with Israel.

But the most compelling explanation for Turkey’s behavior ties the detention to an incident in October in which Turkey claimed it had arrested 15 Mossad agents — none of them Israelis — in the country.

“It seems that in exchange for the release of the 15, Turkey demanded something,” posited Hay Eytan Cohen Yanarocak, a Turkey scholar at the Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security. “And Israel apparently ignored them, apparently said, ‘What do we care? They’re not Israelis. We don’t know them.’”

In order to increase the pressure on Israel to cough up what Turkish intelligence was after, according to this perspective, Ankara found a Jewish Israeli couple to arrest, figuring they would make for more valuable bargaining chips.

Photos of 15 men alleged to be Mossad agents, published by the Turkish Sabah daily on October 25, 2021. (Screenshot)

One analyst who spoke on the condition of anonymity said that although no one can say for sure, Turkey’s MIT state intelligence organization may well have wanted the Mossad to share certain information.

Though the exact nature of that intelligence is not about to be shared with the public, it is clear that a breach between the two intelligence agencies would be a new low for bilateral relations.

In his December remarks hoping for improved ties, Erdogan even stressed that the intelligence relationship between the sides had never ceased, despite the political bad blood.

Nasi agreed with this assessment.

“Intelligence sharing between Turkey and Israel has more or less continued for decades, even when the diplomatic ties had seemingly hit rock bottom,” she said. “When assessed in line with the Turkish authorities’ arrest of 15 men last month who allegedly worked for Israel’s Mossad agency, there seems to be a serious crack in the intelligence cooperation which should be read as a further erosion of mutual trust.”

Amid this new crisis in relations that has seen what appears to be an innocent couple used as pawns, there have been a few signs of hope. For instance, the Oknins’ lawyer met them in prison, and Israeli diplomats spent significant time with the couple on Tuesday.

But there is one aspect of the developing story that is perhaps most encouraging, according to Cohen. The story has largely remained out of Turkey’s print newspapers, with the publications keeping coverage limited to their online editions.

This gives Turkey more flexibility in cutting a deal with Israel, Cohen argued. “In Turkey, the print media has a larger effect on the masses. When it isn’t in print media and doesn’t become a public issue, decision-makers have the luxury of making non-populist decisions.”

Moreover, he added, what is being written in non-Islamist media is relatively moderate.

The overall thrust of Turkey’s current foreign policy is to mend bridges with regional powers, and that remains the case. Though it seems to want something from Israel, it does not want to torpedo any chance of improved ties.

“Turkey has more to gain and benefit from burying the hatchet and normalizing her relations with the countries in the region, including Israel,” Nasi stated.

Kris Jenner weighs in on Kourtney Kardashian, Travis Barker PDA

Kris Jenner has some thoughts about her daughter Kourtney Kardashian’s PDA with Travis Barker.

The momager appeared on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” Friday and said the newly engaged couple‘s parade of kissing and sex-like imagery in front of the whole world has left her feeling uncomfortable.

“Well, you feel like you’re, you know, they’re the only two people in the room, and we almost don’t know what to do with ourselves,” Jenner, 65, shared. “Like, I’m looking for a closet to hide in and somewhere to go, so.

“But they’re, you know, they’re in that stage, and it’s really, really special, and I’m so excited. He was really cute.”

PDA aside, Jenner gushed about the Poosh founder accepting the Blink-182 rocker’s grandiose proposal earlier this month, saying they’re “really made for each other.”

“They’re the cutest couple,” she said.

Kris Jenner admitted she’s not a fan of Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker’s PDA.

Jenner also revealed that Barker, 45, planned the Montecito, Calif., proposal all by himself and had asked her for Kourtney’s hand in marriage.

“He’s a sweetheart, and they’re so happy,” she said. “They can’t wait.”

This will be the former “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” star’s first marriage, although she shares three children with ex Scott Disick: sons Mason, 11, and Reign, 6, and daughter Penelope, 9.

It will be Barker’s third marriage; he was previously married to Melissa Kennedy from 2001 to 2002 and Shanna Moakler from 2004 to 2008. He shares two children with Moakler: son Landon, 18, and daughter Alabama, 15.

The hot-and-heavy couple have flaunted their love around the world.

While Moakler’s internet behavior made it appear that she was distraught over the engagement news, it turned out she was focusing on a relationship of her own. Page Six broke the news on Thursday that the former Playboy model, 46, and on-again, off-again boyfriend Matthew Rondeau are back together.

“Shanna and I have truly found what we needed more of and what was missing just to focus on the fun in life with one another and not letting anyone or anything take that away from us,” Rondeau, 29, told us.

Gavin Newsom signs bill to return seized beachfront land to Black couple’s descendants

California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a landmark bill on Thursday that will allow Los Angeles County to return beachfront land seized from two former Black owners in the 1920s to their descendants.

The new law is considered a win for reparations advocates.

“As governor of California, let me do what apparently Manhattan Beach is unwilling to do, and I want to apologize to the Bruce family for the injustice that was done to them a century ago,” the governor said on the land in Manhattan Beach, according to The Associated Press. “I say that as a proud Californian, but also mindful that we always haven’t had a proud past.”

Newsom said the move could be “catalytic,” allowing land to be returned to others who lost it through racism.

Willa and Charles Bruce’s great-great-grandson and other descendants joined Newsom at the signing.

“There are other families waiting for this very day, to have their land returned to them,” cousin Patricia Bruce told the AP.

County Supervisor Janice Hahn, who led a government push to transfer the land, said the heirs would almost certainly be millionaires now if the property had not been taken.

VIRGINIA’S LOUDOUN COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS VOTES TO LAUNCH STUDY CONSIDERING REPARATIONS

“The law was used to steal this property 100 years ago, and the law today will give it back,” Hahn said.

Willa and Charles Bruce bought the two parcels of land in Los Angeles County’s Manhattan Beach in 1912 and ran a resort that catered to Black people.

The Bruces and other Black families faced harassment from racist White neighbors and in 1924 the city condemned the Black-owned lots and seized them through eminent domain, claiming the need for a public park – now Bruce’s Beach Park – but it was left vacant for years.

The couple sued for racial discrimination and eventually received $14,500 but never got their land back, according to The Los Angeles Times.

In 1948, Manhattan Beach gave the Bruces’ land to the state and in 1995, the state gave it to Los Angeles County, which was not legally allowed to give it back to the Bruces. The new law changes that.

The proposal was unanimously approved by state lawmakers earlier this month.

The effort to return the land started last summer during the anti-racism protest movement and after a petition demanding reparations at the beach circulated, the Los Angeles Daily News reported.

The bill “represents economic and historic justice,” state Sen. Steven Bradford told the Daily News, “and is a model of what reparations can truly look like.”

The county, meanwhile, has outlined steps needed to move forward with the transfer, including assessing the value of the parcels and trying to find a means to lessen the tax burden on the heirs.

The county also needs to vet the legal heirs of the Bruces and possibly find a new site for the lifeguard training headquarters. One option would have the heirs lease the land back to the county for continued use.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
