Carolina Panthers rookie QB Matt Corral sidelined with torn ligament in foot

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Carolina Panthers rookie quarterback Matt Corral likely will miss the 2022-23 season with what coach Matt Rhule called a “significant” Lisfranc ligament tear.

“I would assume it would be a while; I would assume it would be a significant amount of time,” Rhule said Saturday. “I’m pretty sure it will be a long-term injury.”

Corral suffered the left foot injury in the Friday night preseason loss at New England.

A 2016 study in the American Journal of Sports Medicine determined NFL players with Lisfranc injuries treated without surgery missed an average of 6.2 months recovering and those who underwent surgery missed an average of 11.6 months. Rhule said Corral, his family, agent and team doctors are exploring the best option.

In terms of the starting quarterback battle between Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold, Rhule still wasn’t ready to name the winner, although multiple sources have said the job remains Mayfield’s to lose.

Rhule also wasn’t ready to say whether he would make that decision before the preseason finale Friday against Buffalo, but he did say “most, if not all, of the starters” will play against the Bills.

Almost all of the starters, including Mayfield and Darnold, were held out of the 20-10 loss to the Patriots.

Rhule said Corral’s injury won’t influence his decision on who plays against Buffalo. But he said it could influence whether the team keeps three quarterbacks as he said was the plan early in training camp.

Corral likely would have been the third quarterback, behind Mayfield and Darnold. Carolina also has former XFL star PJ Walker, who is 2-0 as a starter for the Panthers the past two years.

Walker struggled with two interceptions and a lost fumble that resulted in a touchdown against New England.

“That position takes a beating,” Rhule said. “We want to have as many good players at that position as possible and make no apologies for it. Matt was coming along.”

Corral’s injury occurred in the fourth quarter when a player stepped awkwardly on his foot. He limped off the field and did not return, leaving Gillette Stadium in a walking boot.

Rhule said deep snapper J.J. Jansen and other veterans gave up their seats in first class to give Corral more room on the flight home.

“I hate it for him,” Rhule said of Corral. “I thought he was playing well, too.”

The Panthers selected Corral in the third round out of Ole Miss. In the Friday matchup he saw his most extensive playing time in practice or preseason games as Mayfield and Darnold have gotten a majority of the snaps.

Corral, who was 1-for-9 in the preseason opener at Washington, was 9-for-15 for 58 yards against New England.

“I thought I saw a lot of really nice signs early in the game,” Rhule said. “But I know Matt’s a battler. This year’s developmental. He’s just going to have to grind, both taking care of his foot and all the things he needs to do as a quarterback.

“Hopefully, someday he’ll look back and say it was a blessing, but I hate it for him right now.”

2022 NFL preseason rookie QB roundup: Desmond Ridder, Kenny Pickett, Sam Howell shine; Matt Corral struggles

Week 1 of the preseason always brings excitement with football returning, especially as teams get their first look at the rookies on their roster. This year’s rookie quarterback class wasn’t as strong as in recent years, yet many of the young signal-callers got their first taste of NFL action this weekend.

Kenny Pickett, the lone quarterback taken in the first round this year, is battling for the starting quarterback job with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Desmond Ridder may be the starter down the line for the Atlanta Falcons, while Matt Corral and Sam Howell wait patiently with the Carolina Panthers and Washington Commanders, respectively.

Although he’s not a rookie, Trey Lance enters the season as the No. 1 quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers. Given how little Lance has played over the past two seasons (one in college and one in the NFL), let’s group Lance with the rookie signal-callers for this experiment.

Below is a roundup of how all the rookie quarterbacks fared — with a special exception given to Lance — this weekend.

Trey Lance (San Francisco 49ers, second year)

Playing just 11 snaps was enough for 49ers fans to get a glimpse of what Lance brings to the offense, as he completed 4 of 5 passes for 92 yards and a touchdown. Lance threw a perfect deep pass to Danny Gray for a 76-yard score to cap off his night, giving the 49ers a 10-7 lead when he left the field.

Lance finished with a perfect passer rating of 158.3 in his debut as the No. 1 quarterback, with the 49ers scoring on both of his possessions. The 49ers don’t have plans to play Lance next week, so this may be it for him this preseason.

Not a bad cameo appearance.

Kenny Pickett (Pittsburgh Steelers)

What an impressive performance from Pickett, who took over in the second half of his debut for the Steelers. Battling for the starting quarterback job, Pickett entered the game after Mitchell Trubisky and Mason Rudolph but finished 13 of 15 for 95 yards with two touchdowns and zero interceptions (132.6 rating).

Pickett threw the game-winning touchdown pass to Tyler Vaughns with three seconds left to give Pittsburgh a 32-25 victory over Seattle. The pass went for 24 yards, as Vaughns used his yards-after-the-catch ability to find the end zone.

Perhaps Pickett moves up the depth chart next week.

Willis showed flashes in his Titans’ debut, finishing 6 for 11 for 107 yards (88.1 rating) with a rushing touchdown in his two and a half quarters of action. Also having five carries for 38 yards, Willis showcased his dual-threat ability at quarterback — but ran a bit too much for Mike Vrabel’s liking.

The Tennessee head coach took Willis out of the game midway through a drive in the third quarter because he wanted his quarterback to throw the ball.

“He needs to try to throw the ball when guys are open,” Vrabel said. “Be more decisive, so we’ll evaluate that and see if there is a timing issue or what’s going on. I wanted to get him out there and see how he responded. He did okay. There were some good plays. Obviously, some plays that we will have to look at the timing on the release and if we are making the right decisions.”

Desmond Ridder (Atlanta Falcons)

Ridder arguably had the top performance of all the rookie quarterbacks in Week 1, even though the third-round pick from Cincinnati won’t be winning the starting job in Atlanta. He made a great first impression, finishing 10 of 22 for 103 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions (89.8 rating) while also leading the Falcons with six carries for 59 yards.

In addition to his strong play, Ridder threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Jared Bernhardt on fourth-and-9 with 1:30 remaining to give the Falcons a 27-23 victory over the Detroit Lions. Perhaps head coach Arthur Smith might have something to think about with his starting quarterback in the coming weeks if Ridder keeps up his strong play.

Howell had an impressive debut for Washington, finishing 9 of 16 for 145 yards (86.7 rating) while also rushing for two touchdowns (three carries for 19 yards). He juked a few defenders on his 17-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter and also scored on a 1-yard run to put Washington up a point with 2:26 to play.

Howell is listed as the No. 3 quarterback behind Carson Wentz and Taylor Heinicke, but the fifth-round pick showed flashes why he was considered a top-10 pick a year ago at this time.

The third-round pick from Mississippi went 1 of 9 for 11 yards for Carolina, yet led the Panthers on the scoring drive that resulted in Zane Gonzalez’s 45-yard field goal in the final minute. Corral is the No. 3 quarterback behind Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold as the pair battle for a starting job.

No matter how the play-calling duties were split, Zappe had an impressive showing for the Patriots in his debut. His 20-yard touchdown pass to Lil’Jordan Humphrey gave New England a 21-20 lead in the fourth quarter against the New York Giants — serving as the highlight of a 19 for 32 showing.

Zappe entered the game midway through the second quarter and threw for 205 yards with a touchdown and an interception (75.6 rating). The Patriots scored two touchdowns on his eight possessions.

An undrafted free agent signing with the Ravens, Brown entered the game in the second half of Baltimore’s 23-10 victory over Tennessee. Brown finished 10 of 15 for 117 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions (90.1 rating), leading the Ravens to field goals on all three of his possessions.

With Lamar Jackson not playing the preseason opener, Brown relieved Tyler Huntley to open the second half. He’s battling for the No. 3 quarterback job with Brett Hundley.

An undrafted free agent, the former Washington State quarterback went 7 of 10 for 54 yards and a touchdown in the fourth quarter for the Cardinals. Guarantano also had four carries for 10 yards in the win.

Guarantano played the second half and led the Cardinals on two touchdown drives. He’s the fourth quarterback on Arizona’s depth chart.

A undrafted free agent rookie for the Bengals, Plitt led Cincinnati on an impressive 11-play, 94-yard drive in his lone series late in the fourth quarter. He capped the drive with a 25-yard touchdown pass to Kendric Pryor, finishing the night 6 of 6 for 76 yards with a perfect passer rating of 158.3.

Plitt is currently the fourth-string quarterback on the Bengals depth chart, but may have played his way into consideration for the No. 3 job.

The seventh-round draft pick from Iowa State finished 3 of 6 for 36 yards and a touchdown (106.6 rating) in his lone series for the 49ers. With Jimmy Garoppolo on the trading block, Purdy has an opportunity to make the roster as the No. 3 quarterback — which was what he was listed as in Week 1 of the preseason.

Crum finished 6 of 11 for 18 yards (60.0 rating), entering the game midway through the third quarter for Kansas City. The former Kent State quarterback was an undrafted free agent signing by the Chiefs, yet is a long shot to make the roster right now as the No. 4 quarterback.

Coan finished 1 of 5 for 0 yards in mop-up duty for Indianapolis. The undrafted free agent from Wisconsin and Notre Dame is the fourth quarterback on the depth chart, behind Sam Ehlinger for the No. 3 job.

Thompson played the full game for the Dolphins, finishing 20 of 28 for 218 yards and a touchdown in the 26-24 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The seventh-round pick hit Lynn Bowden on a 22-yard pass in the second quarter for the score.

The No. 3 quarterback got a good look in the preseason opener.

Crews in New Mexico, Arizona scramble to corral wildfires

Firefighters in New Mexico’s Rocky Mountain foothills are excavating new firebreaks and clearing brush to keep a massive wildfire from destroying more homes and pine forests

LAS VEGAS, N.M. — Firefighters in northern New Mexico worked Monday in rugged terrain ahead of a massive wildfire, feverishly trying to position crews to clear brush and stop the monster blaze from burning more homes in the Rocky Mountain foothills.

The wildfire has charred 308 square miles (798 square kilometers) of tinder-dry ponderosa forests, making it the largest blaze burning in the U.S. during what has been an early start to the fire season. Thousands of people have been evacuated.

Much of the Southwest has been in the grips of drought for decades and warmer temperatures have combined with spring winds to make for dangerous fire conditions.

Crews in Arizona were dealing with strong winds Monday as they battled a fire near the U.S.-Mexico border that forced several dozen people from their homes.

And another wildfire in northern New Mexico near the federal government’s key facilities for nuclear research prompted Los Alamos National Laboratory and others in the area to begin preparing for evacuations, though officials stressed there was no immediate threat to the lab.

The fire has burned nearly 64 square miles (165 square kilometers).

Officials said some medically fragile residents and large animals already have been moved out of the area to lessen the traffic congestion should evacuations be ordered. They anticipated residents would have at least a day or two notice before being required to leave.

“If the fire gets its fifth gear, it will be here sooner than we want it to be,” said incident commander Rich Harvey. “We’re doing everything we can to check it.”

Strong, gusty winds continued to blow across the region after fanning the fires for weeks and often grounding essential aircraft used to drop water or fire retardant ahead of the flames, complicating efforts to contain them. Wind will continue to be a factor this week, along with low humidity, but to varying degrees depending on the day.

Fire officials predicted part of the main New Mexico fire would push north into rugged terrain that is difficult for firefighters to access.

“This isn’t a surprise to us. All the models showed this probably was going to happen,” said fire operations section chief Todd Abel, adding that crews have spent days working to protect ranch homes scattered thorough the area.

Nearly 1,700 firefighters were battling the blaze burning northeast of Santa Fe that was almost 50% contained. It has destroyed nearly 300 structures, including homes, commercial buildings and barns.

The region’s largest population center — Las Vegas, New Mexico, home to 13,000 people — remained largely safe from the flames after some area residents were allowed to return over the weekend. Schools were expected to return to in-person classes on Tuesday.

First-round prospect Matt Corral carted off after leg injury in Sugar Bowl

Getty Images

Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral, a first-round prospect in the 2022 NFL draft, limped off the field and was carted to the locker room after taking a hit to his leg in the Sugar Bowl tonight.

There was no immediate word on the severity of Corral’s injury, but it once again raises the question of whether players who are going to be drafted in April should play in bowl games in December and January.

The debate about players sitting out bowl games intensified just this morning, when Kirk Herbstreit asserted on ESPN that players skipping bowl games are showing that they don’t love football as much as the players of old. (Herbstreit made no such assertion about coaches who leave their teams before their bowl games to take higher-paying jobs.)

Many top draft prospects have decided not to play in their bowl games in recent years, and NFL teams don’t seem to hold that against them. NFL talent evaluators recognize that players sometimes have to look out for their own interests, and protect themselves from injuries in glorified exhibition games. Corral’s injury is another reminder of what players are risking when they agree to play in bowls.

Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral posts farewell message, appears headed to NFL

Getty Images

Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral will play his final home game Saturday. Although he never mentions entering the NFL draft, Corral posted a lengthy farewell message to Rebel Nation.

He called the game against Vanderbilt “my final game at The Vaught.”

“Thank you Ole Miss, and my brothers and I look forward to finishing this journey with Rebel Pride,” Corral wrote.

The move is not surprising.

Although he had an extra year of eligibility due to COVID-19 pandemic, Corral is projected to be a top draft choice next spring.

He is completing 66.7 percent of his passes with 17 touchdowns and two interceptions. He also has rushed for 10 touchdowns. Only nine players in the Power Five are responsible for more touchdowns than Corral.

Corral has the fourth-best odds to win the Heisman behind Alabama quarterback Bryce Young, Ohio State quarterback CJ Stroud and Michigan State running back Kenneth Walker III.

2022 NFL Draft: QB Matt Corral says farewell to Ole Miss, signaling draft intentions

Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral eliminated any lingering doubt about his football future on Friday night. The star junior published a farewell note ahead of the No. 12 Rebels’ final home game of the season against Vanderbilt. In the message, Corral wrote that the “the love on this team was and is unmatched” while making it clear he intends for this season to be his last as a college player as he declares for the 2022 NFL Draft.

Despite being in his fourth season at Ole Miss, Corral could technically play up to two more seasons of college football since he took a redshirt as a freshman in 2018 and last year did not count against his eligibility. But as the No. 10 overall player and No. 1 quarterback in CBS Sports’ 2022 NFL Draft Prospect Rankings, he has little room to improve his professional stock.

Corral has thrown for 17 touchdowns and just 2 interceptions through 10 games, and he’s completed 66.6% of his passes for an Ole Miss team that can improve to 9-2 with a win over the Commodores. He’s also accumulated 523 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns on the ground, despite playing through an injury for much of the season’s second half.

Second-year Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin helped transform Corral from a shaky redshirt freshman in 2019 into one of the SEC’s top quarterbacks in 2020. This season, Corral took another huge step forward by cutting out the interception issues that plagued him at times in 2020. Kiffin responded to Corral’s farewell letter by saying “forever and always like my own!!”

NFL future: QB1?

Corral has the potential to be the program’s first top-10 draft pick since Eli Manning went No. 1 overall in the 2004 NFL Draft. In the most recent mock drafts updated by three different CBS Sports experts, Corral was the first QB selected at No. 9 overall to Washington all three times. It would be a sensible choice for Washington considering current starter Taylor Heinicke is only under contract through the 2022 season.

“Count Washington among the teams searching for a long-term answer at quarterback next spring. Corral expects to be among the first taken in the 2022 NFL Draft,” NFL Draft writer Josh Edwards wrote.

Ole Miss’ QB future

It’s no secret the Rebels are among the many schools in hot pursuit of five-star class of 2023 quarterback Arch Manning, the grandson of program legend Archie Manning and Eli’s nephew.

But there’s certainly no guarantee the younger Manning will pick the Rebels, and even if he does, they will still need a quarterback for the 2022 season. Kiffin has a few options, including current backups Luke Altmyer and Kinkead Dent. Altmyer is a former four-star prospect from the class of 2021, and Dent is a former three-star prospect from Flowood, Mississippi, from the class of 2019.

But the two have thrown a combined 13 career passes. If Kiffin wanted to go with a more experienced option, he could try to shoehorn John Rhys Plumlee into the position. Plulmee has transitioned to slot receiver this season after beginning his college career at quarterback and completing 79-of-150 passes in 2019 under the previous coaching staff.

Plumlee is more of a dual-threat quarterback known less for his arm strength and more for his running, and he could be better utilized at receiver. The Rebels currently do not have any quarterbacks committed from the Class of 2022, but could be an attractive transfer destination for quarterbacks who have taken note of Corral’s development in Kiffin’s system.

Corral’s legacy

The Ole Miss athletic department has waged a Heisman campaign for Corral, and though it seems like a long shot, the season has doubtlessly etched Corral into program lore. He is one of just two players in the country to have thrown for at least 15 touchdowns while also running for 10 or more this season. Entering the Vanderbilt game, Corral also ranks in the top 20 nationally for passing yards per game, total offense per game, yards per attempt and passing efficiency.

Considering the key role he played in helping Ole Miss emerge from consecutive losing seasons in 2018 and 2019, Corral’s legacy at Ole Miss is secure. He guided the team to a .500 record in an SEC-only regular season last year and is leading the team through a memorable season in 2021.

The former four-star prospect from southern California was the perfect first quarterback for Kiffin at Ole Miss, and the tandem helped resurrect the program to a place of national relevance sooner than most anticipated.
