Monterey Park, California shooting: 11 victims ranged in age from 57 to 76 years old, coroner says

CNN
 —

All 11 victims of the mass shooting at a dance studio on Lunar New Year in Monterey Park, California, were between the ages of 57 and 76, the LA County Coroner Medical Examiner’s Office said in a statement.

The victims, five men and six women, were all publicly identified on Tuesday by the coroner’s office. The female victims were named as Xiujuan Yu, 57; Hongying Jian, 62; Lilian Li, 63; Mymy Nhan, 65; Muoi Dai Ung, 67; and Diana Man Ling Tom, 70. The male victims were identified as Wen-Tau Yu, 64; Valentino Marcos Alvero, 68; Ming Wei Ma, 72; Yu-Lun Kao, 72; and Chia Ling Yau, 76.

As investigators work to determine a motive, the community faces a long road to recovery, the city’s mayor said.

“People are just in disbelief and shock, and are feeling very numb,” Mayor Henry Lo told CNN on Monday night.

The Saturday night shooting came as the city’s majority Asian community was marking the Lunar New Year, transforming one of the most auspicious days of the calendar into a tragedy.

“There is a lot of fear and anxiety out there. People are fearful of this kind of situation where our joyous Lunar New Year celebration was turned utterly upside down into tragedy and fear,” Rep. Judy Chu, who represents Monterey Park, said Monday at a candlelight vigil for the victims.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom was meeting with victims of the shooting Monday when he was pulled away to be briefed on another fatal mass shooting in Half Moon Bay – the state’s second mass shooting in three days. “Tragedy upon tragedy,” Newsom said in a tweet.

Authorities revealed new details Monday from their search of the home of the Monterey Park shooting suspect, 72-year-old Huu Can Tran, in Hemet, about 80 miles east of Monterey Park.

Detectives executed a search warrant and found “hundreds of rounds” of ammunition, a .308-caliber rifle, various electronic devices and evidence leading officials to believe he was “manufacturing homemade firearm suppressors,” Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said.

Still, as investigators probe the large cache of ammo they found, it remains unclear what motivated the Saturday night attack at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio and later at the Lai Lai Ballroom.

“Did he plan this? Was it the day of? Was it the week before?” Luna said at a news conference Monday. “We don’t know. But we intend to find out.”

Three people who knew Tran, including his ex-wife, told CNN he had once been a familiar face at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio, where he gave informal dance lessons. But it’s not clear how often he visited in recent years, if at all, and authorities are still investigating whether he knew any of the victims.

“There is certainly the appearance that this was targeted,” Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón told CNN. “Clearly, he knew where he was going, and he was familiar with both of the locations.”

Mayor Lo said Tuesday he hopes the dance hall can again become a safe place for the community.

“It was a place for people to socialize, to learn how to dance,” he said. “We want to make sure that this dance hall continues to thrive and that people feel safe that they can socialize.”

The shooting at Star Ballroom Dance Studio happened around 10:22 p.m. Saturday. The gunman fired 42 rounds of ammunition from a semi-automatic handgun at the dance hall before leaving the scene, according to Sheriff Luna.

At least one person was shot in a vehicle outside the dance studio, and police believe Tran shot that person first before he entered the dance studio and opened fire on the crowd of civilians, the sheriff said.

Monterey Park officers were at the studio within three to four minutes, arriving to a scene of “carnage” as people lay wounded and others were pouring out of the venue, Monterey Park Police Chief Scott Wiese said.

About 20 minutes after the shooting, the suspect – still armed – showed up at a second dance studio in nearby Alhambra. There, a 26-year-old civilian charged him and wrestled the gun away from him, saving countless other lives, he told CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Monday.

“I just had this rush of thought and adrenaline. I was able to come to the conclusion that I needed to do something, I needed to grab the gun. I needed to save myself and people inside,” Tsay said.

The suspect fled and Tsay called police to the site, where investigators traced the firearm to Tran, according to a law enforcement official with knowledge of the case. The weapon was described as a 9 mm semi-automatic MAC-10 pistol with an extended large-capacity magazine, according to Luna, who added the assault weapon appears to have been modified.

California has banned the use of large-capacity magazines holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition.

Less than a day later, Tran was found dead inside a white van about 30 miles away in Torrance as a SWAT team swarmed the vehicle. The sheriff said he died following a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators also recovered a Norinco 7.62 x 25 handgun registered to the suspect inside the van, Luna said.

Ballistic and forensic comparisons will need to be done on all the items recovered from the alleged shooter’s home, as authorities also look into Tran’s history.

So far, the sheriff has said the suspect had a “limited criminal history,” noting an arrest in 1990 for unlawful possession of a firearm.

Those who had met the suspect said he had a hot temper and a difficult temperament.

Ilie Bardahan, a dancer at the Lai Lai Ballroom in Alhambra, said Tran had a “very bad temperament,” adding “people say he was a little bit psycho in a sense.”

“Very sharp movement, pushing a little bit, not being satisfied with certain, I don’t know, improvements of whatever students he had,” Bardahan said.

Adam Hood said he rented an apartment from Tran and knew him for 20 years, but they had a falling out and haven’t seen each other in about 8 or 9 years. He said Tran went by the name “Andy.”

“His personality can be summed up in two words: distrust – he did not trust anyone – and hatred. He could hate people to death. He pushed it to the extreme,” Hood said. “(He hated) whoever he thought was not nice to him. There were other dance instructors he did not like at both (dance studios).”

Hood added Tran thought “the instructors were not nice to him, he thought they spoke evil of him. That was baseless. He was always unhappy with the people in the studios, always complaining about studio bosses and other instructors, not about the students. It was all in his mind.”

Rep. Judy Chu said the gunman who killed 11 on Saturday night “took them away from their families at a night that was supposed to be joyous, Lunar New Year.”

Two Taiwanese Americans were also among the victims, according to Taiwan’s de facto diplomatic representative in Los Angeles, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office.

At least one of those killed was a Chinese citizen, and one of the victims, Alvero, was a US citizen of Filipino descent, according to the countries’ consulates in Los Angeles.

Alvero’s son told CNN his father had hoped to retire in about a year to return to the Philippines, and he said his father spent his free time at the dance studio.

“He’d dance around the house,” Val Anthony Alvero said of his father. “He loved that kind of stuff.”

Nhan, known as “Mymy,” loved to dance and spent many years at the dance studio where she was killed, according to a statement from her family.

Nhan’s dance instructor, Maksym Kapitanchuk, told CNN she was a delight to have around.

“She would always smile,” Kapitanchuk said. “I don’t even think I’ve ever seen her without her smile – even through the mask I can see her eyes smiling. She was the delight of the class, of any party, any class.”

At Monday’s vigil, leaders described the shock and the loss being felt across the Monterey Park community.

“This hit too close to home,” said Chun-Yen Chen, executive director of the Asian Pacific Community Fund.

On Saturday, community members had been celebrating the Lunar New Year at the ballroom alongside dancing grandparents. “Now some of them are no longer with us,” she said.

Many leaders praised the community for coming together in the wake of the tragedy.

“We will not let this murderer defeat us,” Former Assembly member Mike Eng said at the vigil. “We will move forward with more enthusiasm and more love, because the only thing that defeats hate is love.”

Southeast tornadoes: Authorities are ‘finding more bodies,’ coroner says, a day after 35 tornadoes reportedly struck the South and left at least 7 dead

CNN
 —

At least seven people, including a child, were killed Thursday as severe storms swept across the South, where ferocious winds sent residents running for cover, blew roofs off homes and knocked out power to thousands.

Yet the death toll could rise, as authorities were “finding more bodies” Friday morning in central Alabama’s hard-hit Autauga County, Coroner Buster Barber said.

Recovery efforts will continue Friday after the storms damaged power lines, severed tree limbs and sent debris flying into streets in Alabama, Georgia and Kentucky, where at least 35 preliminary tornado reports were recorded as of Thursday evening, according to the Storm Prediction Center.

At least six people died in Alabama’s Autauga County, Barber had said Thursday. In Georgia’s Butts County, a 5-year-old was killed when a tree fell on top of a car, the county’s coroner Lacey Prue told CNN affiliate WSB.

In Selma, Alabama – known for its role in the civil rights movement and home to about 17,000 people – a huge tornado left behind widespread destruction. At a tax office, Deborah Brown and others had to rush to safety after seeing what looked like a tornado rolling down the street, she said.

“We could have been gone, y’all,” Brown said in a Facebook video. “We had to run for cover. We had to go run and jump in the closet.”

The tornado that struck Selma likely was on the ground for at least 50 miles and caused damage to seven counties, National Weather Service Meteorologist Gerald Satterwhite said. It probably was an EF-2 or EF-3 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, he said, meaning the twister packed wind gusts of least 111 mph.

In adjacent Autauga County, at least two tornado reports were made.

Thursday’s severe storms left about 45,000 homes and businesses still in the dark Friday morning across Georgia and Alabama, according to tracking site PowerOutage.us.

The storms marked the latest bout of severe weather to turn deadly in the US as experts point to the human-induced climate crisis as a cause for such extreme events. Millions in California are reeling from weeks of flooding rain that has killed at least 18 people and left thousands without power.

Rescue and cleanup operations are due to resume Friday as what’s left of the storms moves by late afternoon through the Florida Peninsula, leaving cooler, sunny weather across the region.

Selma Mayor James Perkins Jr. asked residents to conserve water as their treatment facilities are affected by the power outages.

“We’ve got to layer up and get ready,” Perkins said as temperatures in the area began to fall, with overnight lows over the next several days to dip below freezing.

Governors in Alabama and Georgia both declared states of emergency in stricken areas to help with rescue and cleanup efforts.

“We always keep in mind that while weather events are intriguing from a scientific perspective, they can result in deep and lasting impacts to people. Our thoughts are with those impacted by today’s severe weather,” the National Weather Service in Birmingham said in a tweet.

“My prayers are with their loved ones and communities,” Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey said in a tweet. “We are far too familiar with devastating weather, but our people are resilient. We will get through it and be stronger for it.”

In addition to destruction caused by tornadoes and powerful storms, damaging winds spun across the region from Mississippi to Virginia.

Across the South and the central US, more than 160 damaging wind reports were recorded in Mississippi, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia. Nineteen severe hail reports were recorded in Kentucky, Ohio, Alabama, West Virginia, Mississippi, Tennessee and Georgia.

In northeast Mississippi, several buildings lay flattened or severely damaged in Monroe County after a storm passed through Thursday morning, video tweeted by the state’s emergency management agency shows. No injuries were reported there, the agency said.

Tornado damage in Alabama’s Dallas County – home to Selma – spanned the length of the county, coroner William Alan Dailey said in a video conference.

Krishun Moore’s house in Selma was torn up when a storm sent her and her mother to shelter in their bathroom, she said. “All we heard was wind and the whole house was shaking,” Moore told CNN, adding no one was injured.

Priscilla Lewis, who shared photos of the damage in Selma with CNN, said the damage made it nearly impossible to leave the downtown area Thursday. No deaths were reported in Dallas County as of Thursday, but some residents suffered injuries.

“This is a disaster area. Power lines are down and trees are down – this is really dangerous,” Dallas County Probate Judge Jimmy Nunn said during a news conference.

In neighboring Autauga County, at least 20 homes were either damaged or destroyed, according to Gary Weaver, the deputy director of the county’s emergency management agency.

Damage survey teams will be in the field over the next several days across the area, the National Weather Service in Birmingham said.

Due to the storms’ extensive impact on some roads in Georgia, some students had been unable to leave four middle schools south of Atlanta, according to their school system Thursday night.

By Friday morning, more than two dozen students were reunited with their families, Griffin-Spalding County School System said in a social media post, after being required to shelter on school grounds because storm debris had blocked access to roadways.

Spalding County, where the school district is located, declared a state of emergency Thursday due to a reported tornado in the community, officials said on Facebook, urging residents to shelter in place. Parts of the state were under a tornado watch Thursday night.

“When you start getting onto the roads, there’s going to be no way to get to where you’re going,” said T.J. Imberger, Spalding County public works director.

The Griffin-Spalding School District will be closed Friday as the area recovers from the severe storms.

‘General Hospital’ star Jack Wagner’s son Harrison official cause of death revealed: coroner

Harrison Wagner, whose father, Jack Wagner, was known for his role on “General Hospital,” died from “fentanyl and alprazolam intoxication,” according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner.

His death in June was listed as an “accident” in the coroner’s report. Xanax is a common brand name for alprazolam.

Earlier this year, Wagner and ex-wife Kristina founded The Harrison Wagner Scholarship Fund to honor their late son by helping others who struggle with addiction.

The former “General Hospital” co-stars described their son as “a bright, exuberant young man whose smile lit up any room he was in.”

“He has left behind many men and family members who loved him deeply,” a statement on the fund’s website says.

JACK AND KRISTINA WAGNER SET UP SCHOLARSHIP IN SON’S NAME TO HELP PEOPLE STRUGGLING WITH ADDICTION

“We are heartbroken that he ultimately lost his battle with addiction and we hope that Harrison’s memory will live on through this scholarship and will help other young men get help for their addiction that would not otherwise be able to afford it.”

On Dec. 1, Kristina shared a somber post dedicated to her son on what would have been Harrison’s 28th birthday.

“Sometimes I feel like a pinned butterfly. There’s no second chance. There’s no see-him-again. There’s no nothing. He’s not coming back. It’s final. But life goes on,” she wrote. “How do I spend the rest of my own without Harrison in it? What does it mean to be ‘all right’ after the death of your child, your blood? The pain will never go away.

“Today is Harrison’s birthdate. I had the privilege to know him for 27 incredible years. Harrison was larger than life, but beneath his commanding presence was vulnerability and compassion. He understood his own defects and worked hard to turn them around, to strengthen his positive attributes. He was a good listener and stood up for others when they couldn’t speak for themselves. He is missed. Happy Birthday, Harrison. To all bereaved parents: May you find peace. Let’s stick around and see what’s in store for our extraordinary lives.”

Harrison was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:14 a.m. in the 11200 block of Chandler Boulevard in the San Fernando Valley suburb of North Hollywood on June 6. His initial cause of death was currently listed as “deferred.”

Jack Wagner and Kristina Wagner were married for 13 years.

The coroner’s office told Fox News Digital: “Deferred means that after an autopsy, a cause of death has not been determined and the medical examiner is requesting more investigation into the death, including additional studies. Once the tests/studies come back, the doctor evaluates the case again and makes the cause of death determination.”

Jack and Kristina were married for 13 years before their divorce was finalized in 2006. They also have a son named Peter, and Jack has a daughter, Kerry, from another relationship.

Following Jack’s divorce, he was in a longtime romance with Heather Locklear beginning in 2007.

The couple, who worked together on “Melrose Place” in the ’90s, became engaged in 2011 but called off their nuptials only three months later. She was previously married to Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora.

Takeoff shooting – latest: Migos rapper’s coroner report reveals new death details as Offset pays tribute

Migos: Takeoff’s final Instagram story before fatal shooting

Takeoff, a member of rap trio Migos, was shot dead in Houston, Texas on Tuesday (1 November).

The rapper – full name Kirshnik Khari Ball – was 28 years old.

Police officers were called at approximately 2.34am local time (7.34am GMT) about a shooting outside of 810 Billiards and Bowling Alley in downtown Houston, where a private party of around 40 people was taking place.

Takeoff and his Migos bandmate Quavo were both in attendance. Quavo – real name Quavious Keyate Marshall – was not injured in the altercation. The third Migos member, Offset, was not present.

An argument emerged, reportedly after a game of dice, and shots were fired, leading many people to flee the scene in panic.

Takeoff was pronounced dead at the scene. At the time, police did not name the victim but identified him as a Black man in his 20s. It was Takeoff’s representatives who first confirmed his death, with the police confirmation following shortly after.

His death has been mourned by industry figures and fans, with tributes for the late rapper pouring in on social media.

Celebrities including James Corden, Drake, SZA, Outkast, and Khloé Kardashian have shared posts remembering the rapper.

As of yet, no suspects have been arrested with Houston police chief Troy Finner calling on witnesses to “step up” with information about the shooting.

The police, as well as fans of the rapper, have urged others to remove graphic videos of the incident that have been circulating online.

Where is Quavo following fellow Migos rapper Takeoff’s death?

Following the news of Takeoff’s tragic death, worried fans have been wondering about the status of his fellow The Migos bandmate and uncle Quavo, who was present during the fatal incident.

According to Houston police, Quavo, who was present at the time of the incident, and Takeoff were at a private party prior to the fatal shooting.

In a following update, police tweeted: “Two other victims taken in private vehicles to hospitals.”

During a later press conference on Tuesday (1 November), the police chief said that a 23-year-old male and 24-year-old female brought themselves to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after the incident.

The news seemingly verifies that 31-year-old Quavo was not among those injured, however, his status remains unknown.

Elijah McClain’s death caused by complications from ketamine injection following restraint, coroner says in amended autopsy report

CNN
 —

The autopsy report for Elijah McClain, an unarmed Black man who died while in police custody in Colorado three years ago, has been changed to update the cause of death from “undetermined” to “complications of ketamine administration following forcible restraint,” Adams County Chief Coroner Monica Broncucia-Jordan said Friday.

In August 2019, McClain, a 23-year-old massage therapist, was walking home from a store when he was apprehended by Aurora police officers responding to a “suspicious person” call. Police said McClain had resisted and he was placed into a carotid hold.

Paramedics diagnosed McClain with “excited delirium” and administered the powerful sedative ketamine. He suffered a heart attack on the way to the hospital. Three days later, he was declared brain dead.

The original autopsy report listed the cause of McClain’s death as “undetermined.”

The coroner’s office received body camera footage, witness statements and additional records that were part of a grand jury investigation and not available before the autopsy was performed, pathologist Dr. Stephen Cina wrote in the amended autopsy report.

Man tranquilized during police stop calls for ban on practice

“Simply put, this dosage of ketamine was too much for this individual and it resulted in an overdose, even though the blood ketamine level was consistent with a ‘therapeutic’ concentration,” CIna wrote. “I believe that Mr. McClain would most likely be alive but for the administration of ketamine.”

Cina, who was assisted at the autopsy by Broncucia-Jordan, wrote that based on his training and experience, he still believes the manner of death is “Undetermined.”

“I acknowledge that other reasonable forensic pathologists who have trained in other places may have their philosophy regarding deaths in custody and that they may consider the manner of death in this type of case to be either HOMICIDE or ACCIDENT,” the pathologist added.

CIna could not determine whether the carotid hold contributed to McClain’s death, he added.

But “I have seen no evidence that injuries inflicted by the police contributed to death,” he wrote.

The amended autopsy report was signed in July 2021. It was released Friday after a Denver District Court judge approved the coroner’s emergency motion.

McClain’s death days after his interactions with police brought renewed scrutiny of the use of carotid holds and ketamine during law enforcement stops. His case gained renewed attention during Black Lives Matter protests in the wake of the police killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.

Last year a grand jury indicted three police officers and two paramedics involved in the McClain case. They face charges of manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide and other charges.

In 2021, the city settled a civil rights lawsuit with the McClain family for $15 million, and the Aurora police and fire departments agreed to a consent decree to address a pattern of racial bias found by a state investigation.

LA County coroner rules Anne Heche’s death an accident

Heche’s car crashed into a Los Angeles home and erupted into flames on August 5. After the accident, Heche experienced a “severe anoxic brain injury,” depriving her brain of oxygen, among other critical injuries following the crash, her family and friends said in a statement to CNN.

She died Sunday, according to a representative for her family.

The coroner cited inhalation and thermal injuries as the cause of death. Other “significant conditions” in her death included a “sternal fracture due to blunt trauma,” according to the report posted online.

Heche’s body has since been released from the coroner’s office, the report says.

CNN has reached out to Heche’s representatives for comment.

Coroner confirms Walking Dead star Moses J Moseley shot himself dead

Nearly two months after Walking Dead actor Moses J Moseley was found dead in suburban Atlanta, a coroner has confirmed that he shot himself in the head, but his manner of death could not be determined.

The 31-year-old Moseley, who who appeared on the Walking Dead from 2012 to 2015 playing the armless and jawless Mike, a pet zombie, was discovered unresponsive in his car on January 26 in Stockbridge with a gun in his lap.

Moseley’s family have raised questions about the circumstances of his death, suggesting that he was the victim of a kidnapping and murder, which was then covered up and made to look like a suicide.

A coroner has confirmed that The Walking Dead actor Moses J Moseley (left) shot himself in the head in January, but his manner of death was undetermined. The 31-year-old played Mike the pet zombie on the his AMC show (right)

Moseley’s death certificate, obtained by TMZ, states that his manner of death, such as accident, suicide or homicide, ‘could not be determined’

Moseley was found in the Hudson Bridge area of Stockbridge, a city on the outskirts of Atlanta, on January 26

According to a death certificate, which was obtained by TMZ, a coroner has concluded that Moseley ‘shot self with intent unknown.’

Moseley’s immediate cause of death was found to be ‘gunshot wound to head,’ but his manner of death, such as accident, suicide or homicide, ‘could not be determined’ based on the results of his autopsy.

was found dead in his car late last month in Stockbridge, Georgia, a city on the outskirts of Atlanta, with a bullet to the head and a gun on his lap.

The celebrity news site reported that despite the coroner’s findings, Moseley’s relatives are still unconvinced that he took his own life.

Moseley’s sister, Teerea Kimbro, shared with TMZ that the family received this month a touching letter of condolences from President Joe Biden and the First Lady.

Police suspected suicide, but Moseley’s family members suggested that he may have been kidnapped and murdered

Moseley appeared on the Walking Dead from 2012 to 2015, playing the armless and jawless Mike the pet zombie

The letter, written on a White House stationary and dated March 8, reads: ‘Jill and I are sending you are heartfelt condolences on the passing of your beloved Moses. I know there are few words I can share that will ease the pain of losing a loved one. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

‘Though the grieving process never quite ends, I promise you the day will come when the memory of Moses will bring a smile to your lips before I brings a tear to your eye. My prayer for you is that this day comes sooner rather than later.’

Family members reported Moseley missing on January 26, three days after last hearing from him.

A short time later, the car security company OnStar tracked the actor to a parking lot in Stockbridge, where he was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Police suspected that Moseley took his own life, but his sister said the actor loved life and that he would never kill himself.

AMC mourned Moseley’s death in a tweet in late January

Other family members raised the possibility that he may have been kidnapped and murdered, based on the location of blood splatter, the way the bullet entered his eye but did not exit his skull, as well as his loose grip on the gun.

In a chilling coincidence, the actor had just wrapped a movie in which he played a man who died in a tragic accident. His sister said that he was happy with where his career was heading, and that they had big plans for the future.

‘During the preliminary investigation, the potential of the death being a suicide was considered while not ruling out any other possibilities,’ Captain Randy Lee of the Stockbridge Police Department previously told TMZ.

‘As investigators progressed their investigation and more evidence was processed, reviewed and analyzed, other possibilities have presented themselves including accidental.’

Moseley’s professional credits date back to 2009, according to IMDb. He appeared in the films Joyful Noise, starring Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton, and The Internship, starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson.

In August 2012, he appeared in character on the cover of Entertainment Weekly alongside actress Danai Gurira.

Coroner IDs girl killed by police in Los Angeles shooting

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The coroner’s office has identified the 14-year-old girl who was fatally shot by Los Angeles police Thursday when officers fired on an assault suspect and a bullet went through the wall and struck the girl as she was in a clothing store dressing room.

Police also fatally shot the suspect Thursday morning at a Burlington store in the North Hollywood area of the San Fernando Valley, police said.

The Los Angeles County coroner identified the girl as Valentina Orellana-Peralta. The suspect’s name has not yet been released.

LAPD officers have shot at least 37 people — 17 of them fatally — in 2021 after another police shooting occurred on Friday, according to the Los Angeles Times. Those figures mark a dramatic rise in cases where officers shot or killed people in either of the last two years — 27 people were shot and 7 of them killed by LA police in all of 2020. In 2019, officers shot 26 people, killing 12.

In the last week, LA officers have killed four people — including two men in separate incidents on Saturday, the newspaper reported.

On Thursday, witnesses in North Hollywood told KCBS-TV that the man began acting erratically, threatening to throw items from the upper floor, and he attacked a woman with a bicycle lock shortly before noon as the store was crowded with holiday shoppers.

Officers answered a report of an assault and others of shots being fired, police said. Investigators have not found a gun at the scene.

The suspect was shot and died at the store but one of the bullets went through drywall behind the man and killed the girl, who was in a changing room with her mother, police said.

Officers found the teenager dead after seeing a hole in “a solid wall that you can’t see behind,” LAPD Assistant Chief Dominic Choi said.

Investigators didn’t immediately know whether she was in the dressing room before the violence began or ran in there to hide, he said.

“This chaotic incident resulting in the death of an innocent child is tragic and devastating for everyone involved,” Police Chief Michel Moore said in a statement late Thursday night. “I am profoundly sorry for the loss of this young girl’s life and I know there are no words that can relieve the unimaginable pain for the family.”

Moore promised a “thorough, complete and transparent investigation” into the shooting and said a critical incident video that will include 911 calls, body camera and other video will be released by Monday.

The woman who was attacked is not being identified.

Investigators were trying to determine whether the assault was random or targeted. Choi said they don’t believe the teenager was related to the person who was attacked.

Police found a heavy metal cable lock near the suspect, Choi said.

The California Department of Justice was investigating the shooting, Attorney General Rob Bonta said.

News reports showed a woman with a bloodied face, who appeared to be the assault victim, being placed in an ambulance.

The victim was taken to the hospital with moderate to serious injuries, Fire Department spokesperson Nicholas Prange said. Choi said she had wounds to her head, arms and face.

On Friday morning, the Times reported that the Burlington store remained closed even though it was supposed to open at 7 a.m.

Multiple signs posted in Spanish and English that read “closed until further notice!!!” greeted would-be shoppers as others left flowers and a flickering candle in a memorial for the teen outside the store.

Edwin Arroyo, supervisor of Nancy’s Cleaning Services, told the Times he discovered blood smeared on a wall in the dressing room, as well as on a cream-colored dress left on a hanger.

“It was a horrible scene,” Arroyo, a father of daughters ages 12 and 18, told the newspaper. “I don’t know how many gunshots there were, but there was a lot of blood everywhere.”

The shooting recalled a July 21, 2018, confrontation in which LAPD officers accidentally shot and killed a woman at a Trader Joe’s market. Officers got into a gunfight with a man who authorities say shot his grandmother and girlfriend before leading police on a chase that ended when he crashed his car outside the market.

A police bullet killed Melyda Corado, 27, the assistant store manager, as she ran toward the store’s entrance after hearing the car crash.

The suspect, Gene Evin Atkins, took employees and shoppers hostage for three hours before surrendering, authorities said.

Atkins has pleaded not guilty to the killing.

Prosecutors found two police officers acted lawfully when they returned Atkins’ gunfire.
