Seth Rollins is top contender to the U.S. title; Bobby Lashley fired on Raw

WWE started this week’s episode of Monday Night Raw by crowning Alexa Bliss the new number one contender to Bianca Belair’s Raw women’s championship after her win over Bayley.

The show ended with Seth Rollins and Bobby Lashley battling it out to become the new number one contender to Austin Theory’s United States championship.

Of course, they aren’t the only sharks circling the champ. Dolph Ziggler got his time to cut a backstage promo beforehand telling Theory to “watch your back.” He won’t be going away anytime soon.

He’ll have to wait for Rollins, however, as he defeated Lashley via pinfall in a really good back-and-forth match between two of the top guys on the red brand. They once again protected Lashley in the finish, as he hit a Spear that appeared to be enough to score the pinfall but the referee had taken a bump on the outside and couldn’t get in the ring quick enough to count it. When he went for another Spear, Rollins countered it into the Pedigree to get the three count.

After the match, Lashley, enraged at how the match played out, once again attacked a referee. Adam Pearce quickly hit the scene to say his hands were going to be tied and Lashley responded by physically pushing him away.

Pearce took none too kindly to that.

“You’re fired!”

And that’s how the show ended.

WWE Raw Results (12/05) – Undisputed WWE Tag Team Titles Match, United States Title Match, Number One Contender Triple Threat Matches

The bell rings and the two lock up. Theory pushes Ali to the mat, then delivers a shoulder block. Ali delivers a right hand to Theory’s chest, but Theory knocks him to the mat and whips him into the corner. Ali hits a hurricanrana, then delivers a kick to his head that knocks him off the apron. He knocks him to the outside and follows it up with a tope suicida. Theory sends Ali face first into the ring post, then tosses him into the barricade.

Back from the break, Ali delivers several chops to Theory in the corner. He delivers a kick to his face, then hits a neckbreaker and a backstabber. He goes for a pin, but Theory kicks out. Theory delivers a back elbow before the two men teeter on the top. Ali hits a hurricanrana and a Satellite DDT, then goes for a pin but Theory kicks out. Theory delivers several kicks to Ali’s midsection while he hangs off the top rope, then delivers several right hands to his head. Dolph Ziggler appears out of nowhere and kicks Theory in the head, causing a disqualification.

Winner (and still): Austin Theory

Ali yells at Ziggler for ruining his opportunity and the two men get in one another’s face. Theory clocks Ziggler from behind, then sends Ali shoulder first into the ring post. He focuses back on Ziggler and delivers A-Town Down.

We head backstage to JBL on the phone. The Miz approaches him and asks why he wasn’t invited to his poker tournament. He says he’s more than welcome, but it’s a $50,000 buy-in. Miz says he doesn’t have the money at the moment, but he can pay him late. JBL says he needs the money now. Miz offers him his Rolex watch, but JBL tells him that it’s a fake.

Back from the break, we head back to the invitational poker game. Baron Corbin wins a hand, but he’s caught cheating by AJ Styles. Styles pushes him and the two become physical. JBL yells at them to stop because they’re ruining his game. Styles the challenges Corbin and Alpha Academy to a six man tag team match against him, Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson, and they accept. Dexter Lumis and Johnny Gargano are the only ones left at the tables, and they collect their money.

We head backstage to Cathy Kelley and Bianca Belair. Kelley asks Belair how she feels about potentially facing Bayley once again and says she’s confident because knows how she thinks. She adds she would’ve been proud to face any of the women, including Rhea Ripley. Kelley then asks who she thinks will win the second triple threat match and she says Becky Lynch, Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross are all great. She lists off what she loves about each woman, then says she’s ready for any of them because she always stays ready.

The O.C. head to the ring, followed by Alpha Academy, JBL and Baron Corbin.

Major TV network the leading contender to strike deal for LIV Golf media rights – GolfWRX

While doing an interview for the Champions Tour, golf legend Fred Couples told an interesting story about the 2009 Presidents Cup.

According to Couples, who was the captain for the 2009 American team, at the beginning of the week both the United States and International team puts a name of the player on their team who will have to sit out if one of the players on the opposing team is forced out of the match due to injury.

Greg Norman was the captain of the International team at the time, so both Couples and Norman gave the names of their chosen players to the head official Steve Carmen who put them in an envelope.

Couples and the American team went on to win the 2009, Presidents Cup, and Carmen was then tasked with bringing the envelope with the chosen player back to the team locker room after the victory.

Freddy then said to Carmen, “Why don’t you open it up in front of everyone and read the name in there?”

To everyone in the rooms surprise, the name Carmen proceeded to read was none other than Tiger Woods.

According to Couples, the room went completely silent, and everyone thought he was “[Couples] was such a clown that [Couples] put Tiger Woods’ name down as the guy who wouldn’t play on Sunday in case of an injury”.

For two years, Couples let everyone believe that he intentionally chose Tiger Woods to not play. The reality is, after the victory, Couples swapped out a different players name and replaced it with Woods’.

For weeks after the event, Tiger would text Couples saying “Dude, you got the biggest balls of anyone I’ve ever seen”.

Couples said that for two years “he took a lot of heck” for allowing everyone to think he was crazy enough to pick the greatest golfer of all time to sit out a Sunday match to potentially decide the winner of the Presidents Cup.

Top welterweight contender Vergil Ortiz Jr. stops Michael McKinson to extend KO streak

Vergil Ortiz Jr. looked across the ring on Saturday night and saw one of boxing’s bureaucratic speed bumps.

In order for Ortiz to inch closer to a crack at a legitimate boxing championship, he had to first defeat Michael McKinson, who was modestly ranked by a couple of the sport’s sanctioning bodies.

It’s going to take more than a speed bump to slow Ortiz down.

Ortiz extended his strong start to the year and won via technical decision with a ninth-round stoppage at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas. And with his 19th knockout in as many fights, Ortiz showed why he’s one of the top welterweight contenders in the world — even if he didn’t feel like he was at his best.

“The first seven rounds, I didn’t really do anything good,” Ortiz said in the postfight interview with DAZN. “I had to adjust big time. I should have listened to my corner from the beginning. But I listened and we got it done.”

Ortiz and McKinson were initially scheduled to fight in March. The fight was postponed when Ortiz was hospitalized because of rhabdomyolysis.

Saturday’s bout, just a few miles away from Ortiz’s hometown of Grand Prairie, was considered a WBA eliminator. Ortiz (19-0, 19 KOs) will certainly maintain his status as the WBO and WBA’s No. 1 contender in the 147-pound division.

But McKinson (22-1, 2 KOs) proved to be a tricky opponent. He was slippery around the outside of the ring and roughed Ortiz up on the inside as well.

Eventually, all the bodywork Ortiz’s corner asked for at the beginning of the fight manifested itself and paid dividends. In the final 30 seconds of the eighth round, Ortiz dropped the British fighter with a left hook to the body. McKinson went down in similar fashion at the beginning of the ninth round.

After he limped around the ring, his corner jumped to the top of the apron and threw in the towel.

Ortiz said his father, Vergil Ortiz Sr., yelled at him for three rounds for not following the game plan for the fight. The 24-year-old’s stubbornness eventually gave way to sound advice.

“You think you know everything, and you don’t,” Ortiz Jr. said.

A path to a title remains tricky because of the landscape within the welterweight division. Errol Spence and Terence Crawford, who was ringside Saturday, hold all four major belts and are in talks for a potential undisputed title fight. In his postfight interview with DAZN, Ortiz acknowledged securing a title shot soon will be difficult because of that impending matchup.

But when it comes to taking on anyone else, he’ll fight whomever that opponent is.

“As long as they’re involved with my path to a world title, I don’t care,” Ortiz Jr. said.

In the co-main event, Marlen Esparza successfully defended her WBA and WBC flyweight titles against Eva Guzman. Esparza controlled a high-action fight and won a unanimous decision 98-92, 98-92, 99-92.

Esparza (13-1, 1 KO) won her sixth fight in a row since her loss to current champion Seniesa Estrada in Nov. 2019. Guzman (19-2-1, 11 KOs), a mandatory challenger made her U.S. debut.”

Royals president says Whit Merrifield ‘sorry’ for saying he would have gotten vaccinated for a contender

It was a rough day for the Kansas City Royals when it was announced that 10 of their players wouldn’t be able to play in a road series against the Toronto Blue Jays because they are unvaccinated, but arguably the lowest moment came from one of the franchise’s clubhouse leaders.

Two-time All-Star Whit Merrifield was among the many players who explained their decision after the news broke, but he was the only one who implied the decision was conditional on playing for a contender:

From Anne Rogers of MLB.com:

“Right or wrong, I didn’t do it on a whim. It’s been a long thought process. Because I understand what Canada has in place right now. That’s the only reason that I would think about getting it at this point, is to go to Canada. That might change down the road. Something happens and I happen to get on a team that has a chance to go play in Canada in the postseason, maybe that changes. But as we sit here right now, I’m comfortable in my decision, my teammates support me, support the rest of the guys in here who have made that decision, and that’s that.”

Merrifield saw a predictable amount of criticism for acknowledging the 35-53 Royals’ lack of competitiveness played a role in a decision that affects his health and the health of those around him. “He is not a winning player. None of these scientists in baseball pants are,” was one comment from Sports Illustrated’s Stephanie Apstein.

Royals president of baseball operations Dayton Moore told Apstein he believed Merrifield, who is currently hitting 240/.292/.343 with five home runs, wasn’t alone in not bothering with the vaccine as long as the Royals are in the AL Central basement.

A day later, Moore discussed the situation on The Program with Soren Petro and said he was “disgusted” when he heard Merrifield’s comments, but revealed Merrifield had apologized for how he explained the decision:

“It’s very difficult at times to articulate feelings and emotions. Sometimes, it just comes out wrong. When I first heard that, I was very disappointed. Pretty disgusted, truthfully. But I also know that’s not who Whit is. And as I communicated with Whit about that, he made it very clear he was sorry for how that came out. I have to accept that and move on. I’m not going to kick him when he’s down, because I do know what Whit Merrifield has meant to our team, the great work he does in this community and I just think it was a very poor choice of words.

“He’ll learn from that and we all will. It’s unfortunate, but we’ve gotta try to move on from it . Whit will get an opportunity to discuss that statement at some point in time.”

Moore confirmed that Merrifield would be made available to discuss his statement after the All-Star break. He also expressed doubt that the player broke a streak of 553 consecutive games played with a phantom toe injury days earlier to avoid public scrutiny.

The Royals officially placed their 10 players, including many key staters, on the restricted list Thursday ahead of their first game in Toronto, with the team’s Twitter account subtly scolding them in the process.

Funnily enough, the Royals then won their first game against the Blue Jays 3-1, despite featuring five Triple-A players and three Double-A players on their roster.

UFC 274 results, highlights: Charles Oliveira submits Justin Gaethje to become top contender at lightweight

Charles Oliveira may not be the UFC lightweight champion, but there is no doubting who is the best lightweight on planet. Oliveira defeated Justin Gaethje in a violent sugar rush at UFC 274 on Saturday night.

Things, as usual during this lightweight title campaign, did not look good for Oliveira early. Gaethje dropped Oliveira on two occasions in the opening round: first with a right uppercut and then with a left hook. “The Highlight” was mindful to not engage on the ground with Oliveira and welcomed him to his feet. Gaethje’s unwillingness to commit to ground-and-pound led to his eventual demise. Oliveira found his footing and responded with relentless pressure. Combination boxing, knees, flying knees and a jumping front kick. “Do Bronx” found the home a right hand that seated Gaethje. Oliveira immediately spun his web on the ground, transitioning from a rear-naked choke to armbar to triangle armbar before sinking in a rear-naked choke that forced Gaethje to tap.

UFC president Dana White was noticeably absent from the Octagon for his traditional role of strapping the UFC title around the winner’s waist. Oliveira, who was the defending UFC lightweight champion at the start of the week, was stripped of his belt after missing weight by half a pound. There were rumors circulating from multiple fighters this week that inaccurate scales given to the fighters in advance contributed to weight issues. Regardless, Oliveira is no longer the UFC lightweight champion but will compete for it in his next fight.

“Hey there is something here,” Oliveira teased during the post-fight interview with help from a translator. “This is a message to the entire division. I am problem for the entire division. Look at this team, look at me. I am the enlightened.  That is my title. It should be here.

“Hey Conor McGregor, are you coming up or are you going to run away?”

Oliveira has extended his winning streak to 11 and has finished Gaethje, Dustin Poirier, Michael Chandler, Kevin Lee and many others during that stretch. The only small blemish — if you can call it that — is a clear unanimous decision win over Tony Ferguson in December 2020.

White later confirmed that Oliveira would fight for the title in his next outing. White has no doubt that Oliveira is the uncrowned champion of the division. Unfortunately, rules are rules.

“He’s the guy,” White told reporters at the UFC 274 post-fight press conference. “He didn’t make weight. We have rules. He didn’t make the weight. The belt is vacant but I’m sure in the minds of the media and the fight fans, Oliveira is the champion. But technically, he is the number one contender now.”

Elsewhere, Carla Esparza regained the women’s strawweight title after nearly eight years away from the top of the mountain. The “Cookie Monster” outpointed Rose Namajunas on two of the three judges’ scorecards to take home the belt she first won in 2014. Plus, Michael Chandler gave fans one of the nastiest knockouts in recent memory with his front kick finish of Tony Ferguson.

CBS Sports was with you the entire way on Saturday bringing you all the results and highlights from the UFC 274 below.

UFC 274 results, highlights: Michael Chandler delivers Knockout of the Year contender over Tony Ferguson

Getty Images

For one round at UFC 274, it appeared Tony Ferguson was finally ready to get back in the win column, showcasing some of his classic speed and power in the striking game. Then, seconds into Round 2, Ferguson was struck with one of the most violent knockouts in UFC history as Michael Chandler’s foot crashed into his chin, ending the lightweight fight in an instant.

Ferguson opened up the fight with some explosive strikes, stepping in with straight punches to counter the wild attack of Chandler. The clean striking had Chandler rocked twice and forced him to explode through a double-leg takedown to put the fight on the floor and slow things down. Ferguson was aggressive off his back, throwing elbows and punches as Chandler attempted to do the same from top position. The result of the two-way ground assault was both men heading back to their corners cut and bloodied.

In the second round, Chandler wasted absolutely no time before closing the show. As Ferguson stepped in, Chandler threw a front kick that landed clean to Ferguson’s chin, sending Ferguson to the canvas unconscious.

Ferguson remained motionless for several minutes, finally regaining consciousness and sitting on a stool before being able to stand in the center of the Octagon as Chandler’s hand was raised.

The win was an important one for Chandler, who had suffered losses to Charles Oliveira and Justin Gaethje in his two previous fights.

“We didn’t even train that that much,” Chandler said of the knockout. “It just kind of happened. He’s so long and leaves his hands wide and left a lane we wanted to throw an uppercut through.”

After his victory, Chandler called out Justin Gaethje for a rematch of their thrilling war before also issuing a callout to UFC superstar Conor McGregor for a clash at welterweight.
