Texas Woman Accused in Recorded Racially-Charged Confrontation Arrested – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

A Plano woman is facing charges after investigators say she assaulted and threatened several Indian-American women in a racially charged outburst that was recorded on video Wednesday night.

Video of the interaction was recorded outside the Sixty Vines restaurant in Plano by one of the women involved and was shared online.

In that video, a woman who identified herself as a Mexican-American can be heard directing a number of racially charged statements toward the group including, “Go back to India,” and “We don’t want you here.”

The woman could also be seen physically confronting the group in the public parking lot attempting to stop them from recording video of her with their mobile phones.

As the confrontation continues in the video, one of the women dials 911 and asks for officers to hurry.

According to police, officers were called to a restaurant parking lot on the 3700 block of Dallas Parkway at about 8:15 p.m. When officers arrived, they said several women reported being assaulted by the woman who was still at the scene.

One of the women wrote on Facebook that the woman, “Came at us with hateful racial slurs…I have lived in DFW for 29 years and never have I felt so humiliated, threatened, and scared for my life.”

At about 3:50 p.m. Thursday, detectives with the Plano Police Department arrested the woman and identified her as Esmeralda Upton. Police said Upton is being charged with assault bodily injury and terroristic threat, both misdemeanors, and that she was being held on bonds totaling $10,000.

“It’s pretty shocking and disturbing,” said Urmeet Juneja, President of the India Association of North Texas.

Juneja says North Texas is home to one of the largest Indian-American communities in the United States.

“We strongly believe this is our home. We have been here a long time and this is not something that we hear everyday,” said Juneja

He says he’s grateful for the swift arrest by police.

It’s not clear if Upton has obtained an attorney and it’s not immediately clear what happened between Upton and the group before they started recording.

“We are appalled and deeply saddened by the incident that happened outside of our restaurant last night,” read a statement provided by Sixty Vines to NBC DFW. “We will not tolerate discrimination or hate of any kind. We’ve attempted to reach out to the women who dined with us to offer support.”

The investigation into the incident is ongoing and police said the department’s Crime Against Persons Unit is investigating the incident as a hate crime.

Plano police said additional charges may be forthcoming.

Scholz says top priority is avoiding NATO confrontation with Russia

  • Scholz warns Germany may be considered party to war if it sends tanks
  • Scholz could soon be forced to decide on approving exports
  • Says top priority is avoiding nuclear war
  • Does not believe banning Russian gas would end war

BERLIN, April 22 (Reuters) – NATO must avoid a direct military confrontation with Russia that could lead to a third world war, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said in an interview with Der Spiegel when asked about Germany’s failure to deliver heavy weapons to Ukraine.

Scholz is facing growing criticism at home and abroad for his government’s apparent reluctance to deliver heavy battlefield weapons, such as tanks and howitzers, to Ukraine to help it fend off Russian attacks, even as other Western allies step up shipments.

Asked in an extensive interview published on Friday why he thought delivering tanks could lead to nuclear war, he said there was no rule book that stated when Germany could be considered a party to the war in Ukraine.

“That’s why it is all the more important that we consider each step very carefully and coordinate closely with one another,” he was quoted as saying. “To avoid an escalation towards NATO is a top priority for me.

“That’s why I don’t focus on polls or let myself be irritated by shrill calls. The consequences of an error would be dramatic.”

This was a departure from his previous statements on the topic, focusing on the fact that the stocks of Germany’s own military were too depleted to send any heavy battlefield weapons while those the German industry has said it could supply could not easily be put into use.

Asked why he would not explain that his government’s reluctance was due to the threat of nuclear war, he said such “simplifications” were not helpful.

However, Scholz could soon be forced to take a clear position on whether heavy weapons can be sent directly from Germany to Ukraine. The Welt am Sonntag newspaper reported that defence contractor Rheinmetall had applied for a licence to sell 100 Marder armoured personnel carriers to Ukraine.

According to the contractor, the Marders could be delivered quickly, but all military exports have to be approved by a committee on which the chancellor sits.

Germany has in the past allowed other countries, including the Netherlands, to send heavy weapons it made to the Ukraine.

Separately, Scholz defended his decision not to immediately end German imports of Russian gas in response to the invasion of Ukraine.

“I absolutely do not see how a gas embargo would end the war. If (Russian President Vladimir) Putin were open to economic arguments, he would never have begun this crazy war,” Scholz said.

“Secondly, you act as if this was about money. But it’s about avoiding a dramatic economic crisis and the loss of millions of jobs and factories that would never again open their doors.”

Scholz said this would have considerable consequences not just for Germany but also for Europe and the future financing of the reconstruction of Ukraine.

Russia calls its invasion a “special military operation” to demilitarise and “denazify” Ukraine. Kyiv and its Western allies reject that as a false pretext for a war that has killed thousands and uprooted a quarter of Ukraine’s population.

San Francisco Giants first-base coach Antoan Richardson and San Diego Padres third-base coach Mike Shildt clear the air after confrontation

SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco Giants first-base coach Antoan Richardson and San Diego Padres third-base coach Mike Shildt hugged on the field before their game Wednesday, a day after Richardson was ejected following an incident that he said included Shildt making comments that had “undertones of racism.”

Richardson said Shildt had used an expletive and told Giants manager Gabe Kapler to control Richardson on Tuesday night. At the time, Richardson said he interpreted Shildt’s comment “as if I was to be controlled or a piece of property or enslaved.”

On Wednesday, the two men chatted on the field and shook hands before addressing the media regarding the exchange. They embraced after speaking to reporters.

“I don’t believe he’s a racist,” said Richardson, who is Black. “I think, though, to the important point, he’s recognizing that some of his words, our words, are powerful and they’re impactful. And we just want to bring awareness to a situation that I think is important for our community.”

Shildt, who is white, acknowledged that he used inappropriate language and said he appreciated Richardson saying he was not a racist.

“I’m grateful for Antoan clearing that up,” Shildt said. “Clearly misinterpreted, and I think he knows this, my value as a human is to love people. That’s exactly what I represent. So I appreciate him clearing that up for myself and my family.

“I don’t know Antoan’s heritage. I can’t walk in his shoes. I can only have empathy and love, which I do have, and I’ve always had in my life,” he said.

Richardson told reporters Tuesday night that his ejection stemmed from an incident that began when Shildt approached the San Francisco dugout.

Richardson said he asked Shildt what he needed. The Giants coach said Shildt used an expletive and told Kapler to “control” Richardson. “At that point in time, I went up to the top step and said, ‘Excuse me,’ because I couldn’t believe what I heard” and got ejected, Richardson said after Tuesday’s game.

Shildt said Wednesday that Padres players and coaches had been upset the Giants’ Steven Duggar stole second base in the second inning with San Francisco leading 10-1. When Shildt went to coach third base in the top of the third, he and Richardson exchanged words.

“There’s some emotions running high. We looked at each other and then I looked in the dugout to find a couple guys that, they really don’t need to be named, but guys I’ve had relationships with since they were younger or I managed before,” Shildt said.

“I was looking for some support to try to defuse the situation. I couldn’t find them, and then we had words exchanged. I’m not going to get into who started it. We’re past that point. … And I could have handled it differently with my verbiage,” he said.

Shildt said he thinks something positive will come of the controversy.

“The reality is we handled this tough solution publicly as men, with solution in our heart without any animosity. And I think it’s a great example of how people can communicate together regardless of backgrounds or colors or situation,” he said.

After Richardson was ejected, Giants assistant coach Alyssa Nakken took over his spot at first base. Nakken made history as the first woman to coach on the field in a Major League Baseball regular-season game.

The Giants won 13-2.

Houston Rockets’ Kevin Porter Jr. leaves arena after halftime confrontation

Houston Rockets point guard Kevin Porter Jr. lost his temper during a heated halftime discussion and didn’t return to the court, leaving the Toyota Center during the second half of Saturday’s 124-111 loss to the Denver Nuggets, sources told ESPN.

Porter became upset after assistant coach John Lucas challenged him, revisiting an issue that led to Porter losing his composure on the bench during the first half, sources said.

The Rockets, who trailed 77-55 at halftime of their seventh consecutive loss, did not return to the court until moments before the third quarter began.

“We had a spirited debate,” Rockets head coach Stephen Silas said during his postgame media availability. “I have certain demands of this team as far as playing hard. … I wasn’t satisfied with the effort.”

The Rockets announced during the second half that Porter was questionable to return due to his left thigh being evaluated. Porter has been bothered for weeks by a left thigh contusion, causing him to miss several games, but that was not the issue that led to his absence after halftime, according to sources.

Silas did not mention Porter specifically during his postgame comments.

Center/power forward Christian Wood, the Rockets’ leading scorer this season, did not start Saturday night due to breaking a team rule, Silas said. Wood played eight scoreless minutes in the first half, during which Houston was outscored by 17 points, and did not play in the second half.

“Coach’s decision,” Silas said of Wood sitting out the second half.

A source said that potential discipline, if any, for Porter has yet to be determined.

The Cleveland Cavaliers traded Porter to the Rockets last January for a top-55-protected second-round pick after deciding to move on from their former first-round pick due to off-court issues, which led to Porter being inactive for the beginning of the 2020-21 season. The Cavaliers announced their intention to trade or release Porter, the No. 30 overall pick in the 2019 draft, after he had an outburst regarding the moving of his locker to a different section of the locker room in mid-January.

Houston sent Porter to its G League affiliate to ease his transition to the Rockets, who moved him from wing to point guard. Porter, 21, has had some success in Houston, averaging 15.0 points and 6.1 assists per game over the last two seasons.

China tensions: Taiwan does not seek military confrontation but will defend its freedom, President says

Taiwan, claimed by China as its own territory, reported close to 150 Chinese air force aircraft flew into its air defense zone over a four-day period beginning October 1, though those missions have since ended.

Taiwan has complained for more than a year of such activities, which it views as “grey zone warfare,” designed to wear out Taiwan’s armed forces and test their ability to respond.

“Taiwan does not seek military confrontation,” Tsai told a security forum in Taipei. “It hopes for a peaceful, stable, predictable and mutually beneficial coexistence with its neighbors. But Taiwan will also do whatever it takes to defend its freedom and democratic way of life.”

China says it is acting to protect its security and sovereignty, and has blamed the United States — Taiwan’s most important international backer and arms supplier — for the latest tensions.

Tsai said Taiwan will work with other countries in the region to ensure stability.

“Taiwan is fully committed to collaborating with regional players to prevent armed conflict in the East China, South China Seas and in the Taiwan Strait,” she added.

Taiwan has been seeking the support of other democracies as the stand-off with China worsens, and is this week hosting four French senators and former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, though he is visiting in a personal capacity.
